Maybe we visited on an off weekend??? Budget cuts?? but the quality of indo-chinese food we've known to love for over the past 7 years just wasn't the same as our previous visits. The kimchi was doused in watered down duck sauce and the tom yum hot pot arrived lukewarm with very little bamboo. The vegetable manchurian was slightly dry, the spring rolls were somewhat crispy, and the vegetable schezuan was very oily. All of them tasted okay, but not as great as we remembered them to be. Also, our service was abysmal but we weren't upset by it because we knew how busy it would be on a Saturday night, and our server didn't mess up the order at any point. They've expanded their wine selection though, so that's definitely some brownie points. I got the resiling which was delicious, and my friend got the cab sav which she claimed tasted "fresh." Honestly, however, I absolutely see us coming back here again. It's a great change in scenery for the palette, regardless of quality, and that definitely counts for something. There is very little indo-chinese food in NJ that stands out, and Ming will always be that pioneer that did it right early on. I'll also add that we didn't get the chili paneer this time around, but every other time we've visited it has been UNREAL. The room and service are nice. Better than what you'd expect in the area, but nothing special on the larger-scale. The food is very tasty. A really nice blend of Indian and Chinese, with more of a Chinese bent. I'm really writing a review about the Chilli Chicken Hakka Style. Hands down the best chilli chicken I've ever had. I travel here just for this dish. Now that it's on the lunch menu, it's a real bargain. Try it. You'll love it. My sister-in-law loves to go to Ming every time they visit us in NJ - because there is nothing similar to it in Maryland. Other than those few times a year - I don't really make it out to Ming. Indo-chinese food in India is amazing - and this is the closest thing to it you can get in the US. One thing that stands out about Ming is the flavor and the spice. I can handle hot/spicy - but some of these dishes really sting. The kim-chi is a great "free" appetizer (don't be ashamed to ask for more) and the soups are delicious (Hot & Sour and Corn Soup) but make sure to share it. The sweet lassi is a great drink (they probably bring it over from Moghul next door). For such a nice place though - I would hope they'd be able to get a liquor license. If you want alcohol/beer/wine - make sure to BYO. We've ordered at least 10 different dishes on the menu - and I can't think of any that we haven't liked. Thai Shrimp Curry, Fish in Garlic, Chili Shrimp, Chili Chicken (awesome), Chicken Hongkong (just ok), Chicken Manchurian (stands out), Chicken Hakka Style (just ok). Why not 5 stars you ask? Ming's is owned and run by the Mehtanis who are also known for Moghul Restaurant in Edison and Morris Town. Ming serves Szechuan and Hunan cuisine made for the taste of people who enjoy Indian food. As some other reviewers have mentioned here, there is always a wait. The management only takes reservations before 8 PM and after that it's on first-come first-serve. Even if one has a reservation, one should be prepared to wait atleast 10 mins before being seated. Several requests to the management to accept reservation beyond 8 PM have been brushed off... perhaps the management realizes that they have a winner at hand and enjoy making people wait 45 mins to 2 hours to get a table. The food is great, but as you probably figured, the wait a big negative in my opinion. Try their sweet corn soups, drums of heaven (chicken drumsticks) and bamboo rice. Most chicken and seafood dishes are well made. Serving sizes are adequate. read more

Some of the best chindian food ever!! I visit Ming every couple of months when I randomly have a craving for it. The food is consistently good! Favorite appetizer - drums of heaven...chicken wings cooked with herbs, chili and peppers. Actually wait....it's the crispy lotus root with honey and crushed chili. It's amazing! In terms of main dishes, that's a little tougher to decide what's best because it's all so good! Though I usually order a side of fried rice and hakka style noodles. We always loved the food at the restaurant. However just ordered catering trays. Biggest mistake was requesting it by noon. It seemed like they cooked it or gave some left overs coz the chilli chicken was like rubber, the noodles smelt stale and the fish was soggy. Was really disappointed as it was for my sons birthday. predominantly Indian-Chinese food , which seems to be more or less Chinese food with Indian spices or maybe in some cases the opposite, a great combination in my book! they also have other Asian fusion dishes on the menu. This is fine dining, the service is great. Manchurian cauliflower consisting of cauliflower fried with Chinese spices, was very tasty and although fried not greasy. The lamb with black bean sauce consisted of a generous serving of strips of lamb with stirf fried veggies in a quite spicy chile based sauce that tasted more Indian than Chinese to my uneducated tongue (I have never been to either country), but in any case it was delicious. The Kulfi Falooda dessert was the apex of the meal, some sort of Indian baked milk pistachio ice cream like concoction , it was exquisite. The wine and beer list is pretty standard stuff, a few mid-range California whites and reds. They have Kingfisher beer, the version brewed in New York state rather than Bangalore, I have heard the Indian version is better. They don't have Taj Mahal, that would be a nice addition, as would adding some more wine variety such as some high quality, low cost wines such as Chilean or Portuguese wines to the wine list, or perhaps some Chinese style beverages such as plum wine.. Clientele looks primarily Indian or Indian-American, not surprising in this part of Edison. Overall a great dinner and I hope to return and further explore the menu. I guess you can call it Indian Fusion or something but basically it's an Indian interpretation of Chinese food. This style of cuisine is very popular in India. In any case, this restaurant does a great job of making dishes in the same style as you'd find in India. They're very tasty and more spicy than traditional chinese food. Try the lotus appetizer thing, definitely something you've never had before. The papaya salad was good. The fish dishes were excellent too with lots of flavor, spice and tender fish. The vegetarian dishes were well done too. The last time I went, they still didn't have a liquor license so it was BYOB. No corkage fees. I usually avoid this place on major holidays, mainly because the restaurant can't seem to handle the rush. Funny enough on mothers day, the same holds true, however, Ganesh (our server) made the experience a lot better. Ganesh was professional, quick, and personable; even while the remaining restaurant staff ran around stressed like a chicken with its head cut off. My husband had wanted t try this place out for quite a while, and finally a few months ago before he moved for work, we had a chance to stop by and try it out later in the evening on a Saturday. Ming shares a doorway with a different restaurant, which, when we went at least, was completely packed. Ming itself was busy enough but not to the extent of the other restaurant. That said, it took a very long time for us to get served food. The place was packed with Indian families and I know this place has been around for a long time, but I wasn't so impressed with the food. In my opinion, for Indo-Chinese, the restaurant Spice Rack in Franklin Park has far superior food and ingredient quality. The meat in the dishes was overly gristly and kind of gross. The papaya salad was okay but it sort of reminded me of something you'd get at a PF Chang's. I just wasn't that impressed by this restaurant. There was nothing particularly bad about it but nothing that made me want to go back. Oh, and I felt it was far more expensive than it should have been for the quality of the food. read more

There is no better place for Indochinese food than Ming. Their shredded lamb and their fried lotus is phenomenal. The flavors seem to nearly leap up from the plate. To this day, I have not had better hot and sour soup anywhere. Their fried rice is light and fluffy and pairs well with any Manchurian or curry dish you order. This is also an excellent place if you're vegetarian! The roasted cauliflower and chili paneer are delicious! You can also get vegetarian options of the Hakka noodles or the Schezuan noodles etc. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and could be a great place for a dinner party or a business lunch with colleagues. The standard for the food has not wavered. The effort that they put into the dishes, is realized once you take that first bite. I know I'll always come back to Ming for a taste of food that reminds me of five star hotels and restaurants in Mumbai where I used to first enjoy this type of food. I would say this is the best Indian Chinese on east coast. They are upscale and have full far. The service is very professional. The servers are attentive. The food was good. Ming is a mainstay in my household for mid-range sit down dining. My favorite dish is gobi manchurian and hakka noodle. My husband loves loves loves the drums of heaven and the cumin lamb. I recommend going to the restaurant over ordering take-out. Ming's food is better hot out of the kitchen. Service is always good there. The only disappointment from my most recent trip is that they seem to have stopped serving salty lime sodas. Ming was one of the few on Oak Tree Rd. that did it without nimbu pani masala. read more

I've been eating Indian food for 25 years, but this was my first experience of Indian-Chinese, and it was excellent! The menu is very vegetarian-friendly, and dishes are far spicier than their Chinese counterparts. Soups are spicy, appetizers interesting, and there are a wide variety of entrees. I've always been too full to try desert! The resturant is attractive, service is OK, and although the food is very good Ming is expensive (plan on $40 per person, without drinks), unless you go during a lunch special which they have in the week, but not at weekends. read more

Yesterday marked the 2nd time I went to Ming. My first time there: The rice (chicken fried rice of some sort), was horrible. It smelled old and there were crunch pieces of rice. The chili chicken was good, but weird squishy, and the mango lassi was good. Our server was horrible and came once to take our order, and once to give us the bill. Overall, I hated it and didn't want to go back ever. I've had Hakka cuisine from many different places, and this was by far the worst. My 2nd time: Very good! This time we went with Hakka noodles with chicken, shredded lamb of some sort, chicken Manchurian, and chili chicken. This time around, everything on our table was fantastic, especially the lamb. I'm still a little turned off by the texture of the chicken in the noodles and entree dishes, but the taste was good. Our server, Ganesh, could not have been any more hospitable. He did a great job serving us and got our order down perfectly :) (Thank you Ganesh!) Overall, I'm glad I gave Ming a 2nd chance. I think their concept is great and it's a nice place for a date night. I will come back again for round 3 and hope to see them improve. I would make the following recommendations: 1. Continue improving servers attentiveness and make sure they're training on fine dining etiquette. Your customers don't have to be extra fancy, but having the servers following high class protocol will evoke good behavior from the customers :). 2. Possibly make the chicken (in the entrees section) crispier. It's a very soft chewy texture. 3. Add in a couple more dry options with the chicken entrees, since many of the dishes are all very saucy. 4. Include a complimentary dish of white rice when a lamb, chicken, or veggie entree is ordered. This is a very common practice, and I think the customers will be happy to see this. 5. Use fresh ingredients (don't cook with the cheap stuff, us customers will notice when you do). 6. Offer some more drinks! We'd love to see some lychee cocktails :) read more

We had a pleasant experience at Ming. We shared multiple dishes including Crispy Lotus Root; Drums of Paradise, Shrimp Curry, Veg Manchurian, and Chop Suey. While the Chop Suey and Drums of Paradise weren't my favorites, I thoroughly enjoyed the curry and lotus root. Everything was well plated and satisfying. I especially liked the lotus root and would have gladly eaten a bunch; it featured the perfect contrasts of sweet/spicy/crispy/soft. The service was well done also; curteous and attentive. My complaints would have to be more price and facility oriented. We found our bill a bit heavy for the portions/quality we received. Additionally, I feel the restrooms could use a little sprucing up. Overall, we had a nice time, but I'm not sure we would consider a return. read more

Service was great, presentation was not up to the standard & food was ok. We arrived at 8 pm and the restaurant was super quiet. We were seated and our drink order was taken straight away and arrived perfectly. The appetizers were great - we got the hot and sour soup and the drumsticks - amazing flavors. For the main course we ordered the chili garlic noodles and a veg entree. The presentation of the noodles was ugly as if we are snacking at home at 4 am when we don't care how the food looks like. Also it seemed to me that the entrees was just microwaved. We got the Gajar Halwa for desert from next door as they own that too and that was great. read more

What an extremely enjoyable evening, thanks to the entire staff at Ming but especially our main server, Thapa! We were a party of 5 with very mixed palettes, spice levels and Meat vs. Vegetarian. They rose to this challenge brilliantly! Crispy Lotus Root appetizer was exactly that! Sweet and Spicy with a nice bit of heat. Thapa also recommended a Lamb appetizer and Spring rolls. Everything was fresh, hot and wonderful. OHHHH, and the Pineapple Martini with Cracked Black Pepper...YUM!!! Thapa helped us with the entrees after asking all the pertinent questions of Allergies, Spice levels (hot, medium, mild), Vegetable, and Meat preference. So now you have to excuse me because when the food arrived I was drooling over it so much that I'm not exactly sure what everything was BUT I can say there was a Spicy Chicken dish, a non-spicy Vegetarian vegetable dish, a non-spicy Vegetarian noodle dish, a Medium spiced Lamb (not on the menu but made just for us thank you Thapa), and a Medium spiced Chicken dish, Jasmin Rice AND Coconut Rice. The Coconut Rice I would have been happy to eat as dessert! OH AND DESSERTS!! So of course when you're eating such good food you don't stop until you're feeling quite satisfied but still need that little bit of something sweet.....LAVA CAKE with Vanilla Ice Cream and (the isn't what it's called but I can't remember so I'm describing) Date Crepes with Vanilla Ice Cream. It's actually a crepe like wrap filled with (s)mashed dates cut into triangles. So simple and yet SO good and perfect after a big spicy meal. SERVICE....this restaurant fills up quickly and stays busy all through the night so you might think that service would be "spotty". YOU WOULD BE WRONG!! There were so many servers taking care of every table that no one was ever in need of attention. Water glasses stays full! Plates cleared (after being asked if it was OK to do so!!!), leftovers packed and delivered, dessert menus, coffee, and we were never made to feel rushed! We will definitely be returning! read more

Especially Ganesh was very helpful as we were there to place an order for catering for my sister's graduation and Mother's Day celebrations.
