Have always been a big fan of Ming but it was a disappointing experience this time around. I drove 1 hr with my family to Ming on July 31st for early dinner. The drinks menu we reviewed was not updated (did not show any cocktails) and the waiter gave us a new menu and left us for another 20 minutes without attending. The vegetables on the spring roll tasted like they were rotten and the chicken drumsticks were undercooked. The noodles and rice were decent but the duck was too chewy and bland. We were charge $12 for a drink which barely had any alcohol. We were alsocharged a 20% flat service fee for this abomination. Needless to say this was a underwhelming experience from once what was a good place..not coming back. read more

Been going to MING for my Indo-Chinese fix for years now and this place still rocks. They have managed to maintain their service and quality of food.Ming reminds me of Chinese food in South Asia, and is by far the best Indo-Chinese Restaurant around. Just remind them to make your food spicy, the way Indo-Chinese should be eaten. No matter the weather I always start with the Chicken Coriander Soup (spicy). Some of our favorites are the Chili Duck, Lobster in Black Pepper Sauce, Chili Garlic Rice and the Hakka Noodles. This past weekend I tried the Okra in Szechwan Sauce- really good vegetarian choice. If you like spicy food then this the place to get your fix. The service is always great. The ambiance is nice, there is also a little private area for a big group. Take the NJ Transit and go eat at Ming in Edison! Ming serves fiery, Szechuan and Hunan cuisine the way it is enjoyed in India or Pakistan. There are any number of great dishes - from Chilli chicken to Chicken Manchurian, Spicy soups, all at a great value. Our group of five friends dined for $170 and we stuffed ourselves. I've introduced a few of my Asian American friends to Ming and they've all been impressed with the interpretation of chinese cuisine. Be mindful of the fact that there are big crowds waiting every single night. So, even if you have reservations, it might take you a wait of 45 minutes before you are eventually seated at your table. Ming intends to be a high-end Indo-Chinese restaurant, and the prices definitely justify this aim. However, the food is mediocre (at best), and service is atrocious. We went to Ming early in the evening (to beat out the dinner time rush), The appetizers were extremely small in quantity, which prompted us to order more. During the second round of orders, our waiter demanded that we order our entrées as well, as we had limited time to eat (he claimed that each reservation gives you 1.5 - 2 hrs of time to eat at the restaurant.) Appalled, I asked for the manager, but the waiter ignored the request and refused to come to our table for the rest of the night. The service for the rest of the night was extremely slow (which contradicted the earlier two hour time limit we were given). The food was passable, for normal indo-chinese fair, but the taste does not justify the exorbitantly priced food, and horrible service. There are several options for indo-chinese cuisine in New Jersey. Ming's only competitive advantage lie in the fact that they were first to offer this style of food in New Jersey. Their current menu is tired, old, and lacks any real innovation. Great spot for Indo-Chinese. The veg dishes were much better than the non veg ones. Loved the Cauliflower Manchurian, Chilli Paneer and the fried rice. Also sampled some of the prawns in garlic sauce it was well done. The service was impatient and they seemed unable to cope with our large party of a dozen or so people. Was an eternity before we got any water on our table or got our glasses replenished. The servers didn't seem concerned about checking in from time to time. Minus 0.5 stars for decor, it seems kind of tacky, w/ a bathroom that looks like an afterthought (though it is spacious). I haven't spent too much time in Edison, but from the looks of all the places on the side of the road, the area needs some nicer restaurants. I went to a dinner with my wife on our first anniversary and was having a lot of high expectations. For starters, I ordered steamed dumplings, which were okay. I had better dumplings in India, at a much lesser price. They were not as hot as I would have expected. For main course, we ordered Hakka noodles and veg manchurian. Both the dishes were okay. If we are in NJ (about twice a year), dinner is usually at Ming. "Indian"Chinese (if there is something called that!) outside of India on the East Coast, Ming is The very best. For those transplanted from Kolkata, this is as close as it gets to "tangra chinese khabar), or Jimmy's in old Park Street. Tangra is a section in Kolkata which has a high concentration of Chinese immigrants, who in the 70's and 80's had these small family style eat-ins. Today, it is a sprawling area with tons of "chinese" restaurants that serve up these hot and spicy chinese cuisine. At Ming, start out with the Coriander soup to totally open up the sinuses. Carry on to the Fried shrimp with garlic and fresh chili,drums of heaven and for vegetarians, the cauliflower manchurian. The wide selection of the main courses are excellent, some highlights being the lamb in schezwan sauce, chicken manchurian, and the chili paneer. The Ming Fried rice, chili garlic noodles and American Chopsuey are some of the rice/noodles to accompany the main dishes. We finish it off with the Lychee icecream! BTW, Ming now serves alcoholic beverages, so its no longer a BYO (disappointed). But, they are very reasonably priced. We have been going to Ming for over 10 years. Ming is an Indian restaurant which specializes in Chinese food. That's very tantalizing and all, except I don't want to have to sell a kidney to eat there. It's that ridiculously priced. I have no idea who they think they are catering to or where they think they are located, but Oak Tree Road in Edison is not what I would call posh. So stop hiking up the prices and pretending. The food was food though. It is the kind of Chinese food you would get in India. So, I guess they hit the mark on that. This is Chinese food with Indian spices and I love the result! All of the chili dishes; the fish in oyster sauce, black bean dishes and the Thai shrimp are excellent. So is the service and the atmosphere is very nice--good space between tables; comfortable chairs. BUT--when lamb and seafood dishes are $18-23, it is annoying to spend $6 more for white rice (large enough for 3- people, but still...). Portions are generous. Food: Spicy coriander soup - a little too sour for my taste. Fish with Chili Sauce - The fish was probably my favorite. The spice of that dish was just right. Vegetables with hot black bean sauce - tasty and has lots of extra sauce, felt like enough sauce for triple the portion of vegetables. Chicken with bamboo and mushrooms - I didn't notice many mushrooms or bamboo in the dish. Good but my least favorite. With only two people, we had plenty of leftovers. I noticed only Indian people at this restaurant - interpret this as you wish. The reason for 3 stars rather than 4 or even 5 is the service. The service was really slow, especially to get our food. We waited maybe 40 min to receive our food. The waiters didn't check on us to see how we liked everything or what not. I had difficulty locking and unlocking the bathroom stall door because there was a screw sticking out in the way. Overall, the food was good even if the speed/service wasn't but also on the pricey side. I came because I had a $50 gift card. With it, it was totally worth it. Food quality has gone down and the prices have gone up :( We spent $110 for dinner with no alcohol. $15 minimum for dinner! Summary: Good food, good ambiance, great service! Jiffy lunch is by and far the best value for the money that you can get here. For around 40$, we had three people fully fed (soups, entrees, noodles/rice), including a generous tip as well, for the fantastic service. Even on a packed friday lunchtime crowd (psst: there's a reason it's packed), the food was relatively quick, the service was great, and drinks were always quick to be filled/replaced. Get the vegetable manchurian and/or the chilly paneer, with white rice and hakka noodles. You can be the biggest meatatarian in the world - you're still gonna love this one. Another nice touch is the marinated kimchi that they serve to open the meal. Mix it with a tad bit of soy sauce, and you're golden. All in all, a must visit. Dinner is great too, but if I were paying the regular (non-jiffy) prices, I'd rather go to Ming II (Morristown) for the better ambiance and slightly better food. So I have to preface this review by saying that East Asian meets South Asian cuisine is probably one of my top five favorites, and considering it is not as readily available this review might be a little biased. Regardless though Ming is pretty good! I've been here a 3-4 times and every time it has been a pleasant experience. What prompted this review is my most recent visit, 12/6/12. The services was great. Our waiter was so kind and he noticed that the soup was a little too spicy for our taste so he checked back many times when the entrees came out to make sure the level of spice was okay. He even offered to remake our order if it wasn't. Turns out, that wasn't necessary. The chili paneer was great. The chili chicken and black pepper fish were also delicious. Now, why am I not giving it five stars? I understand that they are a nicer restaurant and what not but I still find the prices a little over the top and the fact that they charge extra for white rice -- is just annoying. My favorite recommendations - Appetizers/soups - Corrainder soup, Drums of heaven and Lotus Root Main Course - Egg Fried rice, Chilli Chicken, Black pepper shrimp, Tilapia or Chicken hakka style Desserts - Lychee ice-cream and Casatta (b) Service is impeccable (ask for Agnello the manager and Prajyot the lead if you need to impress your guests) (c) Decor is ok. I have been coming to Ming forever. I love their food and service is not bad. Their Okra, Cilli Paneer, All of their soups are very good. If you come for lunch even better. Maybe we visited on an off weekend??? Budget cuts?? but the quality of indo-chinese food we've known to love for over the past 7 years just wasn't the same as our previous visits. The kimchi was doused in watered down duck sauce and the tom yum hot pot arrived lukewarm with very little bamboo. The vegetable manchurian was slightly dry, the spring rolls were somewhat crispy, and the vegetable schezuan was very oily. All of them tasted okay, but not as great as we remembered them to be. Also, our service was abysmal but we weren't upset by it because we knew how busy it would be on a Saturday night, and our server didn't mess up the order at any point. They've expanded their wine selection though, so that's definitely some brownie points. I got the resiling which was delicious, and my friend got the cab sav which she claimed tasted "fresh." Honestly, however, I absolutely see us coming back here again. It's a great change in scenery for the palette, regardless of quality, and that definitely counts for something. There is very little indo-chinese food in NJ that stands out, and Ming will always be that pioneer that did it right early on. I'll also add that we didn't get the chili paneer this time around, but every other time we've visited it has been UNREAL. Not sure if the quality pattern applies here as well, but rest assured no one else seems to think so - fingers crossed. read more
