My boyfriend and I got BAD food poisoning from the food here. The shrimp crepes were bland and rancid - it's like they cooked with spoiled shrimp. The har gow was also terrible and rotten-tasting. Absolutely some of the worst food, dim sum or not, I have ever had. I started with the pork bao buns. I thought these were halfway decent. The pork was a bit tough and the bun was falling apart. I've had better bao buns pretty much anywhere else. But at least they were edible. Couldn't say the rest of the food was. The shrimp shu mai was disgusting. The shrimp were so tough it cracked when I bit into it and the taste made my stomach turn. Smelled of mildew was was sickeningly sweet. I threw it away. The egg tarts were just as bad. Filling was horrible and the crust tasted of burnt oil. Thrown away. I had the shrimp pea tip dumplings last and they were also bad. One smelled halfway decent and the other two absolutely reeked of fish. Smelled like it had gone off. Also thrown away. The restaurant is gorgeous, with beautiful modern decor! I did not think the food would be authentic, but it was and delicious! The service was so fast, and they really helped explain the menu. I really like the dim sum and entrees here, But they are over priced compared to Chinatown MingHin. I have a hard time paying for $8.50 dim sum dishes and $20 entrees. My dim sum tab for 2 people with couple glasses of wine is usually around $150. read more

This isn't the place to go if you're just craving cheap, solid dim sum. The decor is nice and matches this part of town. Before tip, we paid about $50 for two people while ordering 6 dishes and feeling quite full. No tea charge/sitting fee either, which was nice. (And at this price, you'd hope you get the tea for free...) We had to ask for Jasmine tea, but it really hit the spot. It's strange that you order on an iPad and then they take the iPad away. Service was good, but brusque (and brisk). Hearing the workers speak in Cantonese reminded me of home. First, I'm shocked their egg tarts aren't mentioned more often in reviews. Maybe because we came early we got an amazing batch? Otherwise, people are really missing out, and I don't particularly consider myself an egg tart fan. Egg tart trio ($6.95): Fantastic, possibly one of the most unique options I've seen at a dim sum restaurant. Is this a secret Chicago thing or something? The trio comes with the default egg custard, mango pudding/custard, and matcha custard. I've never had mango pudding or matcha as egg tart flavors and these were amazing. The tarts were flaky, the fillings were soft and not overcooked, and the flavor was subtly delicious. Ha cheung fun/shrimp rice rolls ($7.75): The shrimp in these were very soft and chewy. Well steamed and they hit the spot. Not the best on the menu, but worth an order if you're craving some. Ha gow/shrimp dumplings ($7.75): I can't believe I'm saying this but there was too much shrimp in these. They were certainly worth the price, but the ratio was way off. These were practically exploding with shrimp. Char siu sou/BBQ pork turnovers ($6.95): Not sure why these smelled so strongly of vinegar before taking a bite, but the flavor was spot-on savory and the flakiness was fantastic. Chinese-Cantonese restaurant dotted all around Chicago that also serves dim sum. We came in as a party of 2 with no reservation in a Wednesday afternoon and we're quickly seated. This review is only scoped to their dim sum menu (as that was really our only goal). We got about 10 different plates, definitely way too much for 2 people but we're out of town and the menu looked so delicious. Their har gow, shui mai, har cheung and fung zhao are excellent. The dan tat and cha siu sou were also notable. Their sucking pig and rice porridge wasn't that great and I don't recommend. Service is super fast and all the waitstaff is friendly, give you a big pot of tea when they sit you down, and refill automatically in true Chinese dim sum fashion. They give you a little tablet to make your dim sum orders and it comes out in a reasonable time. The dim sum menu isn't a 'full' menu if you're an experienced goer for yum cha, but still good to get your fix in. tldr; come here for dim sum, it's not the 'full' experience but certainly will satisfy your fix. read more

My friend really wanted some Cantonese/Hong Kong style food so we had dinner in this restaurant. Some dishes, like the shumai, shrimp dumplings with chive and the greens were very authentic and delicious. My favorite was the greens and shrimp crepe (shrimp was tender and fresh and the crepe was soft and silky), while my friend liked the baked egg yolk bun very much. Other dishes, such as the pan fried pork bun, was disappointing. It seemed that they used frozen meat, and the bun shell was tasted wet and bland. Plus, it was extremely oily. The restaurant was pretty big and well-decorated. There was plenty of people dining in as well, even if it was Monday. I seem to always gravitate towards dim sum whenever I'm travelling and so when I saw MingHin was near the hotel I was staying at, I bookmarked it. MingHin is conveniently located if you're staying in the Magnificent Mile area and so I made my way here for my first official meal in Chi-town. I asked for a table for one and upon entering, I was surprised with the beautifully high ceilings and upscale decor. Once I was seated they gave me a tablet to browse all the menu items. Boujee-ist dim sum place I've been to, but I wasn't complaining! It was lovely. I ordered the siu mai (my go to dim sum order), steamed egg yolk paste bun, and the pan fried corn and pork cake. Once my order came, I knew my eyes were hungrier than my stomach. Haha. It was a lot for one person! The siu mai was moist and deliciously flavorful. The texture was perfect! The egg yolk bun was also tasty and served as my dessert. Now, the pan fried corn and pork cake - I ordered it because it sounded interesting and I wanted to try something new, but it just wasn't my favorite. I'm thinking it was probably the beans or whatever green veggie that was inside of it. The flavors were odd to me and didn't sit well on my palate - hence the 4 stars. I've only been to the MingHin location in Chinatown, so being able to easily walk to this location right near Michigan Ave after some time shopping was great! The set up and ambiance of this place is significantly fancier feeling than the one in Chinatown, and the service also matched it as well! Everything we ordered was delicious too. When you are craving dim sim in the city there is MingHin on Ohio St in Chicago. They serve most of the typical dim sum selection but they don't have the carts that go around the place. Just place the order and a server will come and bring it to you. Ordered some chicken feet, red bean jelly, salted fish fried rice, meatballs, crispy pork, and pineapple buns. Very modern, bright, and a wide variety of dishes to choose from. We started to order and the dishes came out, one by one. Everything from basic shrimp dumplings to fried rice and Peking duck. All flavorful and, most importantly, as expected. We wanted Chinese food and we got it, nothing fancy or different. Since my friend moved to Cleveland, she was having major Asian food withdrawals and she really wanted to get dim sum for breakfast. Luckily for us MingHin happened to be across the street from our hotel. On the night prior we saw how crowded the restaurant was, so we figured we should get there at opening to avoid any wait. Even coming at opening the space was half filled and by the time we were leaving there was a crazy wait. Service was pretty minimal. Feel free to waive them down as needed. The interior was definitely upscale. They let you order from a tablet, instead of the dimsum carts coming around. The food took a long time to come out and the order that they were ready was really far apart. We shared the following dishes: Shrimp Har Gow ($7.75) - Big shrimp and thin exterior but I would be impressed if the har gow wasn't busted open. Even worst was when I tried to pick it up the exterior rice flour layer was stuck and the shrimp fell out. Poor execution. Pork and Shrimp Siu Mai ($6.95) - Generously came in an order of five compared to other places where there is a serving of four. Super juicy and tasty. Shrimp Crepe/Rolls ($7.75) - Big shrimp, good rice flour crepe exterior. Unlike other dim sum places they did not cut it down the middle, which made it slightly more difficult to eat and share. Chicken Feet ($6.95) - This is the first time I see a restaurant cut the feet in half. The sauce on this chicken feet was really weak and missing that Chinese five spice. I'm not impressed. Salty Fish and Chicken Fried Rice ($11.95) - I had a few bites to try it but I wasn't impressed. Nothing something I would care to order again. I also wanted the thousand year egg congee but they were out on the day of our visit. I think the fried rice is priced well but all of the other items are a bit overpriced. I get that this place was meant to be an elevated Chinese restaurant experience but the good isn't good enough to my standards for these prices. I'm giving this such a rating because despite 2/3 of my dishes being bland, I enjoyed everything else here. I appreciate the attentiveness of the servers and speed of food delivery, the size portions of the dishes, and the clean, spacious restaurant. I visited on a late Saturday afternoon, at a time where it wasn't busy but not at all dead. You're offered complimentary hot green tea (tasted as expected), and order from a tablet and a server confirms the order to send it to the kitchen. I ordered egg drop soup, crab rangoon, and chicken fried rice. They do not offer wonton chips for the soup, but do have an alternative that is lighter, but serves the same purpose of adding a bit of texture to the soup, a la crackers. Even with adding that, the soup was pretty bland. Unfortunately, I found the chicken fried rice to be the same, even though the portion size was enough to be sharable. A tad more soy sauce if salt would have helped tremendously; however, it did taste pretty fresh and didn't skip out on the chicken. I enjoyed the crab rangoon, as the cream cheese filling tasted more savory than sweet. Despite all of that, I'd visit again and try some new dishes. The best dim sum I've ever had. All the dim sum was fresh and hot. Did I totally eat the steamer paper and not notice because it was so tasty? Yep! We came on a Tuesday around noon and it wasn't busy. There is lots of space with a beautiful interior and bar. The service was exceptional and we never had to wait for a refill for water or tea. The crispy pork belly is served at room temperature and extremely unctuous still. Many times you expect the heat to help melt the fat, but this has been expertly cooked so all the collagen has broken down into gelatin. Wow. The buns and bao's were all fresh, steaming hot, and plush. Everyone says "it was like eating clouds" but this was one of the few times where I truly believed it. The filling is quite generous and flavorful whether it's the bbq to the shumai. We preferred the shrimp crepe over the beef crepe. I did appreciate the sauce is on the bottom of the plate and not drizzled over. Many spots drizzle soy sauce ahead of time making the rice noodles far too salty. This was great. The beef had a tangy flavor I wasn't a huge fan of, but I was assured it was a very traditional flavor by my gf. The shrimp is very high quality and has good shrimp flavor. The desserts being warm was a big surprise. I'm so used to room temperature egg tarts that I've forgotten what it's like to eat one that's still warm and lightly crispy.
