    Seafood tofu soup
    Craig T.

Today my sister and brother in law decided to try Mini Garden Orient Cuisine . Located on Beretania next door to Illi I'll pizza. Small parking lot next door also limited street parking right in front of restaurant. I always passed by Mini Garden and I always thought they only open for dinner because during the day it looks closed. Although they open for lunch at 11am it was great my hairdresser actually recommended this restaurant because her co- worker is part owner and she said it was good . Do I had to try it overall it was ok service was great and friendly I mentioned I know her co- worker and the owner actually made us a complimentary bowl of soup . She mentioned it was a seafood, tofu soup it was quite delicious. I also ordered Peking duck and buns, shrimp canton, string beans w/minced pork, and beef chow fun. I would say the Peking duck was different most places they put the skin only with hoisin and green onions over here they put the duck inside the buns. My favorite was their string beans and pork it had a little kick to it . Their beef chow fun was ok along with their shrimp canton . If I'm in the area I would probably support them again . This time I would try other dishes . Looks like they specialize in vegetarians dishes as well looks yummy. Support local

Mini Garden Oriental Cuisine took Over the original restaurant which was named Mini Garden. Had lunch with my wife and brother-in-law. Thru the conversation between our server and my brother in law, I learned that our server was part owner of the restaurant and that she is also a friend of my brother-in-law's Hair Stylist. We ordered four dishes. To our surprise she gave use a complimentary bowl of Tofu Soup. The four dishes we shared were, Beef Chow Funn, Minced Pork with beans, Shrimp Canton, and Peking Duck with buns. The soup was the standout dish. Very friendly and good service. The interior of the restaurant is open and inviting. Although the menu differs from the previous Mini Garden. You should give them a try. Enjoy

Mini Garden Orient Cuisine ( a mouthful to say ) is a Cantonese / Mandarin style restaurant and long staple of the McCully neighborhood. But I can't say that I've dined here or had takeout. Ordered via dining site, Grindz to Go...given an estimate of 1130 for later that day...and it was ready. Takeaway of Peking ( is this an antiquated term ) Duck. The half-duck portion comes with buns - bao - and is a good portion. Good and for the price of $30, worth another visit. One the menu this is listed as one of their popular dishes. Extensive menu with a decent vegetarian section. Almost every Chinese restaurant has an extensive menu and that always makes a bit skittish. Service was very cordial. Parking adjacent to the building it shares with Tane Vegan Izakaya and Ho'ili'ili Market, the old ili'ili cash & carry. Signs delineate where one can park.

Had lunch with my favorite person my brother and of course my husband. Living in town we're always passing by on beretania st to go home and see this Chinese restaurant. Didn't know about the parking on the side of the restaurant and pizza place I thought was only street parking. Well we had lunch over there and was very good. We had string beans and mince pork a little spicy for me had a kick , shrimp canton, beef chow fun, and Peking duck with buns. Since my brother was refer to try this restaurant by he's hair stylist he said lets try them. And we did. We even had complementary soup from the part owner was good. It was tofu seafood soup. We'll try other items in the future.

Today I got to try their Sweet & Sour Spare Rib and it was good. I was offered to choose with or without rice, which I chose with rice at the same price. The server was helpful and friendly.

Chose to come here after passing it for so many years. Was looking for a quick bite and I was in the area. This was the place for me at the moment. Decided on beef chow fun, crispy chicken and salt and pepper fried tofu. The ambiance was ready to get busy for there were reservations for the UH graduation and I was glad I came early! There are many tables so that wasn't a problem. Food didn't take too long and the dishes came out one by one. The chow fun was good and tasty. The tofu was so so and needed more flavor (in MY opinion) and the chicken I expected extremely crunchy skin and juicy chicken but the skin wasn't very well seen and the chicken was rather on the dry side. I could have ordered the wrong things and I know they were busy so maybe the kitchen wasn't up to par that day. It's ok, I'll return and try other items. Everyone was cheerful and kind so I didn't mind my lunch. The price wasn't too harsh but I will have to return.

I have been here about 5 times and since I wasn't familiar with the menu options, I would see what others were eating and ask for recommendations. The food is excellent! Very tasty and cooked to perfection. The veggies were crunchy just as I prefer. Serving size was descent for the price. The staff were very helpful and the restaurant was clean. They even give complementary dessert. I always come here when I am in the area. Dine in and take out. I tend to order about 3-4 entrees with lots of leftovers to take home. Support local businesses, folks. Good Chinese cuisine at this establishment.

Impromptu dinner... My indecisiveness makes for it a crazy decision making and what better place than Chinese cuisine as they have incredible menu choices for my belly to inform my thoughts for the night. With a decent size parking lot right beside the building makes it easy especially during the rush hour as street parking isn't allowed also making it safe to access the restaurant. Walking in I was surprised how spacious it was and with the old school style setting a lady came and took my order was nice and polite. What interest me is that they have a Vegetarian menu section for allergies like mine does make it comforting to know though there's no meat whatsoever which doesn't bother me and using mushroom stock actually sounds yummy and with so much to choose from I decided on the "Mushroom Fantasy Chow Fun" which is a dry type of noodle dish it didn't have the "star" notation categorizing it vegetarian she assured me there isn't any seafood in this dish. Food came out nice and fast I was surprised how little mushroom it had, using shiitake is great as it's my favorite type of mushroom it also had sprouts and some broccoli for the $13.95 price it wasn't much of a fantasy or mushrooms but it really was tasty and light not all covered in heavy seasoning which I do really love and would actually like to try other vegetarian dishes as well. Thank you!

I came here a weekend ago w a large group of about 7 tables w 9-10 people per table. I think we took up almost the entire restaurant. The food was great, we all had Bittermelon Fu Yung, Oysters with ginger and green onion, Scallop with Tofu and black bean sauce, Chinese broccoli (gai lan) with lup cheong, Deep fried whole flounder, Beef with sour cabbage, Crispy seafood noodles, Almond Pudding with Strawberry sauce. Everyone enjoyed the food. Sadly they only had one waitress for the entire restaurant! But wow she did a great job at serving all 7 of our tables of almost 70 people. There is a small parking lot shared w a few other eating places so come early for a parking.

Unfortunately, it was one of the biggest disappointments of my vacation. The Singapore crab completely missed the mark. Instead of the rich, savory, slightly sweet and spicy flavor I was expecting, it tasted like it was covered in plain tomato sauce with very little seasoning. There was no depth or authentic flavor at all. The salted egg yolk wings were just as disappointing. They were incredibly bland and lacked the rich, buttery, savory salted egg flavor that makes this dish so popular. I honestly don't understand why these are recommended as signature dishes. I came in with high expectations based on the reviews, but left wondering why anyone would recommend such bland, overly saucy food. There are far better places to experience authentic Singapore-style flavors. Worst meal of our trip.

The first thing I saw when I walked in was the owner making dumplings by hand. That immediately gave me the feeling I was in the right place. Growing up I watched my own Mom make our version of dumplings, so seeing that kind of care and craftsmanship felt familiar. The owner was warm and very welcoming, and as each dish was completed she brought it out fresh from the kitchen, which gave me a chance to taste the food while it was still steaming. It was hot, but I could not stop myself from sampling it :) Everything I ordered was delicious and clearly made fresh. I'll be honest though, watching the dumplings being prepared right in front of me was a real highlight. I'm sure that some of you out there can relate to this. I also had the chance to meet owner's mother and another gentleman who I believe may have been family, which added to the welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is small, but it did not feel rushed. We had a good time talking story while the food was being prepared. It was a challenge for me to drive home with all that food in the back of my car. I was tempted to pull over and just indulge, but I remembered that I had to share it lol My summary? Good food, genuine hospitality, and a great first impression. I will definitely be back.

I have a feeling it's for the convenience from Waikīkī and the fact it's on the second floor. My gonggong always enjoys eating at Chinese restaurant that are on higher floors because it symbolized its more high class, high status, more luxury, etc. Many well known restaurants are like that in Guangzhou, and Hawai'i had many restaurants like that, such as Wo Fat, Empress, China House, Royal Garden, Lau Yee Chai in the Waikīkī Shopping Plaza, and maybe Hee Hong and Panda Cuisine. The food feels like it's prepared with less and less care and only care about just getting it out as soon as possible. The Lobsters - one with black bean sauce, other with green onion and ginger - were small and one note. It ate like the lobster was flash fried to temp, played, and then sauce/toppings were added on top. The lobster ate dry, especially the green onion one. Black bean sauce was bland too, but at least had some flavor. The Sweet Sour Fish was prepared exactly the same as the lobster. Deep fried the fish, plated, sauce on top. The 10-15 seconds of tossing it in a wok must be too hard. Sauce was too tart and lacked the sweet and savory for balance. Chinese Broccoli with Garlic sauce was bland and almost had zero garlic flavor. Braised Tofu with Mushroom and Snow Peas were okay. Decent oyster sauce flavor. Doesn't seem it was mixed around that much. The Jellyfish ate and tasted like the premade, packaged variety with just the salty one note flavor. Is it me, or is an order of soup getting smaller and smaller while the price is higher and higher? Seems like whether a table of 4 or a table of 6, the soup will always yield one small bowl per person. The Fish Maw and Crab Meat soup was disappointing. Bland. Don't feel any effort was put into this soup. Overall, the food wasn't awful. It just isn't as good as other places. Speed and less care are obvious in its taste and presentation. It doesn't feel authentic. It doesn't feel elevated. Basement level food served on the 2nd level. This place gets too loud when it's busy, and it's difficult to communicate with servers and your own dining companions. Sad there aren't many of these style Chinese Restaurants now, and no one wants to open them.

First off, no wait bc it was close to 1:30. Everything came out piping hot and fresh Out of all the dim sum places on the island, and I've tried them all, this is my new favorite Siu Mai 5/5 was my DD favorite Beef Ball had good flavor and texture Fried Pork Dumpling (ham siu gok) had water chestnut in it which was a first for me. But it worked! Egg tart 5/5 had a great crust and the bite with the filling was actually really good Ngl Pan fried Chives and Shrimp dumpling was tasty Definitely be back when I am back in town We also came here for dinner a few nights later. Note: they don't serve dim sum during dinner. There wasn't many seafood selection let alone fresh seafood. Clams were even out. Fresh Ong Choy and bbq pork was the highlights. Definitely more of a dim sum restaurant

I was recently invited to attend a dinner for my part time job where I wasn't really keen to…read morepartake but was heavily persuaded to join them at King Restaurant & Bar (KRB) where I gave in. What a blessing that was as I was impressed with the food quality and attention to detail. There were many star dishes that impressed me and luckily had the honor to pack up the leftovers which I ended up sharing with family. They raved over the food from KRB, so I suggested we come here for dinner. To play it safe I called ahead and made a reservation for a round table as I tend to order an array of different dishes. To our surprise, KRB wasn't busy that weekday evening with both private dining rooms occupied and only one other table of 4 during our arrival. I asked the family what they wanted to eat and because they are big eaters who also enjoy leftovers, our initial food order consisted of 9 different dishes that included doubling up both noodle orders. Overall, our meal was above average with family favorites of tofu casserole that was so delicious that I ended up getting another one. The seafood crispy noodles were also phenomenal as it was executed well with great texture contrast and finesse in flavors. Personally I enjoyed the free range chicken with ginger onion sauce and the sautéed lamb with leeks. We also appreciated the complimentary dessert of chilled coconut milk tapioca. Service was above average as the staff were attentive to our needs and exchanged plates halfway during our dinner. The only setback for me was the ambiance as it was semi dark and dingy. The interior could use an upgrade. Recent returned visits to KRB is truly deserving of 5-stars from me. The food exceeded my expectations where it was worthy to drag my family here and have concluded KRB is deserving to be included in our rotation of restaurants to patronize.

Personally the oysters were quite soft and not what I expected. It was a bit disorienting to bite into it. Place is relatively big and is chinese style with the spinning table.

The staff do their jobs and take customer complaints seriously and asked to verify that a dog two tables down from the complaining customer is a service animal. (Even though the dog didn't do anything) That's all they can do under the ADA, they can only ask two questions to the dog owner. The customers who complained ended up leaving the restaurant without ordering anything and wrote a 1 star review here. As a witness the staff did the right thing and acted professionally.

Food (4 stars) + Steamed egg cream buns or custard baos were delicious and a kid favorite. (3 for $7.50) + Shrimp fried rice was just what we needed--comforting, hot, and a break from resort food. + The Peking duck had a generous portion of meat and buns. (Half duck $42) - The duck skin lacked crispiness, and you'll want to add more skin into each bun for balance. ~ Xiao long bao and siu mai were standard--not bad, not amazing. Service/Ambiance (3.5 - 4 stars) + Clean, bright, and feels like you've stepped into a late '90s/early 2000s classic. Big round tables--perfect for family meals. ~ Typical Chinese restaurant service--efficient but not overly attentive. You might have to flag them down. All in all, a solid 4-star experience for a tasty, slightly nostalgic Chinese feast in Honolulu!
