It is a bit interesting that I am picking a Chinese restaurant to do my review on, but because I was hungry at the time, I had to find a place to quickly eat lunch at. I guess it led me to Golden Duck. I haven't heard all too much about this place, but the look of the inside of the restaurant made it feel inviting upon first glance. I ordered their Lemon Chicken plate, and it's not bad. The chicken was nice and crispy, and the sauce really made it tasty. I only ate some of it, but did have a good amount of it leftover for tomorrow. Overall though, it wasn't too bad for a first-time visit. Maybe next time, I should consider getting the lunch special or one of the beef/pork dishes. There's a lot to choose from...and they most certainly give you a decent amount of food if you're going there for lunch. 9/10 experience for me. Not bad. Service is fast. Very old school. Casual, come as you are place. My dad used to take me when they were on McCully Street small kid time. Even Tin tin chop suey by Wo Fat in Chinatown for kup dae jook( rice soup) which no longer exists. Roast duck wun tun mein is my favorite here. Hubs likes their stewed or steamed duck noodle. Not on the menu but they make my order, SO good. The soup comforts you like a warm hug. Always busy, lots of take out too. Our siblings got together to discuss our brother's passing and what transpired with plans. We had time to catch up with each other, really connecting. Steamed fish, black mushroom and Choi sum,Shrimp Fried Rice, chow mein, garlic Chinese broccoli, beef broccoli, pork and string beans, minute chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and fried shrimp. Among our favorites here are the Peking Duck w/ Buns and Ong Choy w/ Garlic. Perhaps differently from others, we use the ong choy instead of the included green onions as a garnish for the buns and duck. Last Thanksgiving was the first time we ordered their Whole Roasted Turkey. We liked it so much that we did it again this year. I had ordered the turkey for pick up at opening time. A few others who had pre-ordered were there before me, and several others arrived after I did. We invited a guest for Thanksgiving lunch, and the three of us enjoyed the turkey with the included gravy. It could be that the taste was even better this year. For dessert, we had Whole Foods pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream. We all enjoyed this special lunch and the time together to reconnect. The iconic Golden Duck Chinese Restaurant was opened in 1946 at McCully and So King sts by Bung Ghin Leong and wife Alice Young. The Leongs sold the restaurant to Eddie Lam in 1947 (who also owned Red Rooster Chop Suey at Piikoi and Young sts.) and operated it well into the 1960's and 1970's before he died in 1975. The restaurant moved into the former Bakery Kapiolani site where it stands now in Makiki at King and Piikoi sts. Its new owner at that time was Pat Arakaki (who later owned Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant), who then sold the restaurant to Aaron Fang, who currently operates it today. Golden Duck initially served authentic Hong-Kong style Cantonese cuisine and has since adapted it to local tastes and is considered an old-school Chinese restaurant. As many of these old-school Chinese restaurants have disappeared due to the owners retiring, Golden Duck continues to serve old-time dishes, such as stewed duck noodle in soup, roast duck wor mein, and stuffed duck that other restaurants do not have. Golden Duck's menu offerings are extensive and include: appetizers, soup, sizzling platters, seafood, casseroles, pork/beef, chop suey, poultry, daily specials and plates, eggs, vegetarian, rice soup, rice, noodles in soup, and noodles. Some of our favorites include: * (Anything) over cake noodles. Lots of variety, including minute chicken, chicken with black mushrooms and snow peas, chicken with veggies, seafood with veggies, roast duck, oyster sauce chicken. The cake noodles are egg noodles that are light in color, boiled, then pan fried into crispy thick squares, and drenched in savory thick gravy with stir-fried veggies and meats. The crispy edges add a nice texture to the dish. I've had various toppings to the cake noodles with veggies fresh, crunchy and vibrant in color; and all are delicious! A note, however, re the minute chicken over cake noodles, which is Monday's special. The minute chicken in this special is bone-in chicken pieces only. As I prefer boneless chicken, I would need to order this from the regular menu for a few dollars more. * Peking duck in bun. The quality of this dish is exceptionally delicious, and is of the same caliber as offered by other Chinese restaurants. The steamed bun is filled with green onion slices, hoi sin sauce, and crispy duck skin, with the remainder of the boned-in duck served separately. * Stewed duck noodle in soup. An old-school favorite that has slowly disappeared from local restaurants. A quarter of a duck is served with noodles, won bok, and black mushrooms in a soup broth. The duck meat flavor seeps into the broth, giving it a flavorful taste to this filling noodle dish. While I have yet to try the lunch or dinner plates, they are very popular, and you can sub certain items for others. Portions for all dishes are generous, prices are reasonable, and most of the menu offerings are delicious, although a few items may need additional ingredients and spices to enhance their flavors. When our son recently visited from Toronto, he requested to eat at Golden Duck. Not sure why, but my guess is that he missed his favorites from this restaurant while growing up here. Long-time staff employees are friendly and willing to make subtle changes to your orders. They are efficient, bringing you the necessary plates and utensils, refilling your water glasses, promptly serving your orders, and processing your payments. The restaurant always seems to be busy with locals, many of whom are multi-generational, who have visited the restaurant over many years. The L-shaped dining area is spacious, with the front area consisting of round tables for groups and booths in the back. The restaurant is clean and bright, although one of the booths near the cashier is used for take-outs with empty boxes packed for takeout usage. The area has some Chinese décor and a display of rubber duckies, as a reflection to its restaurant name. There is an area of Chinese dried seeds, candies, shrimp chips, and snacks from Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery. Note that the Fang family not only owns Golden Duck Restaurant, but also Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery, where the snacks come from. They also own New Mui Kwai Chinese Restaurant in Kailua and Kaneohe, as well as the Crack Seed Center in Kaimuki. Hours of operation are daily from 10:30a to 9:00p. He was also understanding when we added additional items to our order. Also called monk's food, this is a dish that is normally made around Chinese new years. If you order take-out make sure you spell your name and know your order. The original owner Pat, used to be a neighbor of my father's and she has owned several different Chinese restaurant. The food has always been so Ono! Since she has last owned it, it's been taken over by the current owners who have kept up making ono tasting food at Golden Duck! My go to if I'm eating inside or evening doing a take out order is always their lunch plate. I order Mines with plain rice instead of fried. They do charge extra if you want to sub out the white rice for fried rice, but I'm not sure how much more is added to the cost. I love their plate lunch because there is a variety of 3 different dishes and some crispy gau gee. On top of the rice. I love to have variety when I eat Chinese food. I often also order a side egg fu yung as well. I've never been disappointed by their food and will continue to go back for many more years. For the most part, it's as clean as the eyes can see. We stopped by Golden Duck for a casual dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the flavors. The roast duck wor mein was a mixed bag -- the noodles were just fine, but the duck itself? Generous portions, tender, and full of that rich roasted flavor. We also tried the roast duck and chicken on rice, and now I get why it's a fan favorite. The duck was juicy and flavorful, and the chicken had that classic soy glaze and was surprisingly moist. Perfect over rice. These are daily specials. The vibe inside, though? Kind of strange. One booth is used for takeout orders and random storage, which throws off the look a bit. And it was quiet. Like, awkwardly quiet. No music, no background noise -- just forks clinking and the sound of my own thoughts echoing in my head. Some light background music would go a long way here. That said, the staff was super friendly -- they made conversation, checked in on us, and seemed genuinely happy we were there. I noticed most Chinese restaurants do also sell homemade shrimp chips along with rice cake as well . This particular restaurant has all kinds of seeds , almond cookies , also tea cookies. As I have done many times in the past, I placed an order to this restaurant via Uber eats just this evening. The order included cold ginger chicken, I specifically requested that the ginger/green onion sauce be kept SEPARATE from each other because I've consumed the same dish elsewhere in which the 2 components were combined, which made me violently ill. As I do not plan to immediately consume the order now, I am forced to do so now, the potential for food poisoning is too much of a risk. If this restaurant cannot follow simple order requests, then they should not be in business. I am seriously entertaining contacting the State's Department of Health to report this. read more

It was cooked decently and wasn't too salty. It just lacked a bit of flavor. The gau gee was a nice size but the meat didn't have too much flavor to it. The walnut shrimp was decent, the minute chicken cake noodle was super soggy. Usually the edges are nice a crispy but these were not. The beef chow fun was good and the beef was tender. This is one of local favorite eating places, however, their dishes are always salty but has a lot of flavors. During holidays and festivals dishes didn't cook well enough you can still eat the raw vegetables, recently ate there two out of three dishes that has veggies are raw. So next time I will think again before going there during holidays and festivals, of cause service is limited when it is so crowded with table come after tables. Perused through the rack of Chinese seeds, cookies, gau, lucky candy and shrimp chips while I waited. Order received piping hot. Everything tasted so good. Good things come to those who wait. Today's order consisted of Chicken Fried Rice, Sweet Sour Pork and Honey Walnut Shrimp. The fried rice is not overly seasoned, but it's not salty, either. (I should have ordered the one w the hamyee.) The shrimp were huge. Great coating and sauced, but I would have liked the mayo sauce to have coated the walnuts as well. A bit dry without it. The ss pork, no green peppers, was good with a light coating and nice ss sauce. Not fatty pieces. Very meaty. Ordered minute chicken cake noodle, beef with bitter melon and 2xs beef vegetable stir-fry for take out. ETA stated was 15 mins. In general Chinese food is usually fast. I'm sure our food was ready, however we arrived later, Like 30 mins later to pick it up. Owner of the restaurant was very rude and not welcoming. He said we "took too long to come get our food." He didn't even say thank you, or enjoy your meal or anything. He threw a fit when I asked for a receipt. And didn't even give me an itemized one. Total for 3 items came out to over $100 ! I know inflation is bad, but that's really over priced for 4 dishes. And the amount of food given was so skimped. We also asked for no additional MSG, since my mother is allergic, but the food tasted like it had way more than the normal Amount!
