I love Mint Masala! I just moved here from San Francisco, and this (luckily) was the first Indian restaurant I tried ! I love their dosas, saag paneer and pakoras - yum!! The chicken tikka masala is also stellar, as is their gulab jaman (perfect for those, like me, with a sweet tooth). The staff is super friendly and nice and the restaurant has a great vibe. Mint Masala has good food. The only thing that they need to really work on is cleaner water that they present to you after you sit. My girlfriend and I noticed stuff floating in the ice water. As a rule of thumb, always ask for a glass of hot water, and place the utensils in there until your meal arrives. Secondly, customer service is below average here. I dont know what it will take for restaurants to understand that you retain customers by how welcoming and nice you are to them (customers). When we were departing, I observed one of the employees looking at my girlfriend sorta weird. Just for that I wont be eating there again. Best of luck to that business. read more

And they have a vast range of Indian delicacies. I ended up having Palak Paneer, while my friend tasted a Butter Chicken Platter. We both enjoyed our meals, and it was indeed an excellent experience. This is only for dosa. When will I learn to never order dosas in a North Indian restaurant? I was craving Thiru'S dosa (ny dosa) in Washington Square Park. Even withdrew cash to get it but the line was long and I had a meeting to go to so abandoned my spot on the line and headed down to mint masala for a masala dosai. Know why the line is so long at Thiru's? Because it is really good. Here, the edges in the dosas were burnt to a crisp. Sambar was so so. The masala stuffing itself was not bad but the chutney was the worst. Coconut chutney gets sour only when it is old. Toss that crap away. I would like to give them another try because of the great location and efficient service but will probably try a North Indian dish. read more

I've taken many friends and family members here for the food, and I even had my first date here with my boyfriend of a few years. I only have the best things to say about Mint Masala--the Masala dosa is one of my favorites!! So far all my friends and family have loved the food The waiters and manager are very nice and helpful, and the customer service is great. There was only one time when they delayed my order for pickup, and the waiter gave me a mango lassi as a courtesy for waiting a little longer! This is my first time trying Indian food and I am impressed the chicken tikkia Marsala was amazing and went wonderfully with the garlic naan. Came here on a Sunday night and the wait was less than five minutes but it got packed really fast after we got seated so I guess I went at a good timing. The shrimp thing I got was not as good as the tikkia Marsala. One pot is actually more than enough food for two people, we ordered two pots and couldn't finish so word of advice to future patrons of two just get the tikkia marsala get the naan and you are all set! read more

Mirch Masala is my go to Indian food place in the city. Although it is a little bit pricey, the food is amazing and the portions are huge. The first time I came, I had to wait about ten minutes but the wait was worth it. It gets pretty busy during dinner time but very empty during off peak hours. Typically if I go with one friend we would be full after one curry with rice and a naan. My personal favorite is the fish Bombay and garlic naan. Have you ever had a Masala Dosa? I love getting them from the Vegan NY Dosa Man's Cart in Washington Square Park but when that's not an option, this is the place I go to get my craving met. Their Masala Dosa (a HUGE paper-thin chickpea and lentil crepe) is stuffed with potatoes, peas and spices but it's not "spicy". What it IS is delicious, beautiful to behold and filling. They serve it with a small bowl of Sambar (a spicy Indian soup with vegetables and mustard seeds). Now, when I come in, they see me and say: "Masala Dosa!" I also appreciate it when they play Indian music CD's because that's what helps make this tiny spot completely transporting. P.S. Came here with a group of 4, and like the unadventurous, uncultured people we are, all ordered the exact same thing: Chicken Tikka Masala (and sides of naan!) The Chicken Tikka Masala was very generous in portion size; gladly ate it all though, as it was delicious. The overall combination of the fragrant rice, the savory chicken, and the naan was wonderful, and I didn't waste any bit of it! In terms of authenticity, I can't really attest to how much this place will remind you of your mom's cooking, but if you are craving that American-Indian concept, then Mirch Masala is a perfect restaurant for you! I have a new theory. If you want to decrease your consumption of an unhealthy food you are craving, then eat a mediocre blah version of it. I realized this after eating dosa here recently. I had eaten here a few times before--the only reason I chose this restaurant is because they make dosa. I would eat here, it would be whatever and then I would not feel the need to have dosa for awhile. Then I started going to Ahmisa, which is like 2 blocks away, and their dosa is sooo good. As a result, I would want to eat dosa all the time. The dosa at Mint Masala isn't terrible, but it's pretty eh. Like it's slightly over cooked/mildly burnt, the sambar is too salty, the chutney in the Mysore masala dosa was not so spicy and had a weird tangy taste and looked like ketchup. Basically, this restaurant is not a vegetarian restaurant and the dosa tastes like it. Learn from me and don't order dosa from Indian restaurants that serve meat. Unless you are trying to develop a mild food aversion. read more

Stopped in for a quick snack before a movie. The pakoras were delicious (vegan and gluten free), also enjoyed the samosas although I've never had it with peanuts inside before. At least I don't think so, hhmm. They also have Taj Mahal which is very good Indian beer. This is our second time eating at Mint Masala while visiting NYC and both times we've been very pleased with the excellent food and friendly service. We stopped in for a quick bite and shared a Masala Dosa & each had a beer (we were doing a food crawl). The dough of the dosa had a very satisfying crispy exterior and chewy interior. The potato filling was delicious and substantial. The sauces served with it were very good--the sambar had a several veggies in it (cauliflower, eggplant, carrots, onions...) and the green sauce had a coconut milk base with cilantro. Now we just have to figure out how to make this at home since our home city, Knoxville, isn't exactly the dosa capital of the world. Our bill was right around $20 all told--an excellent value for the quality and quantity of food (the beers were $4 each). read more

I will go out of my way to get this Indian food! I usually post photos with my reviews but when the dishes come out at this restaurant... I have no self-control. My favorites include: - Chicken Tikka Masala: It's creamy and tomato-y and very delicious. The chicken is succulent and juicy, while the sauce is flavorful. - Lamb Vindaloo: The lamb is tender and so tasty. This dish is very spicy and compliments well with basmati rice. - Paneer Saag: Cheese cubes with spinach. What more can I say? Delicious! - Garlic Naan: Light and fluffy and has the perfect amount of garlic. - Maska Cheese Masala Dosa: lightly seasoned potatoes that are covered in cheese and wrapped in a crepe. Had dinner here with a friend (hi Joe!). To start, we had the Mulligatawny soup, which is just so fun to say. Then for dinner, I had the grilled chicken dosa. The restaurant staff gave us complimentary dates and mango lassi to break our fasts, they did not start serve the food until sunset came in, and they were very attentive to us throughout the meal. Mirch Masala is nothin schmancy but is plenty delicious! Lam VIndaloo has a nice kick but wasn't esophagus damaging at all. The Dal Makhni was a WONDERFUL vegetarian option and so tasty. And what's indian food without some delicious bread? The Paratha and the Rosemary Naan were both incredible. This was one of these places that you start getting sad once you start running out of food. Go. Order. Be DELIGHTED. Then be sad when the food runs out. Then order more food. ProTip: The bathroom is through/off of the kitchen but is VERY clean and then you get to give props to the chefs! Service overall is terrific! read more

This review is for the dosas, YUM! I tend to avoid Indian restaurants, my background being South Asian, I'd rather have home-cooked Indian/Pakistani food any day. My husband and I were out for a walk and dying of hunger, but couldn't decide what to eat. When we saw dosas listed on their awning, we decided to give it a go, not expecting much. I ordered the Mysore dosa and my husband ordered the spicy Mysore dosa. While mine was very good, my husband's was deeelicious. The Mysore is a little crispier than a normal dosa, made with rice flour I believe, and was smeared top to bottom with a spicy red paste. While it was VERY spicy (honestly, probably a little too much so for regular folks), my husband plowed through, sniffling and wiping tears through every bite because it was just that good. When the orders first arrived it looked like SO MUCH FOOD, and it was, but we finished almost all of it, waddling out afterwards. We'll definitely be back, and I'll be ordering the spicy Mysore dosa, albeit with the request to add a little less of the spicy paste. Oh and this place is halal, woo hoo! This small restaurant is my most favorite Indian restaurant in NYC... Why? 1. Quality of preparations, you can tell the ingredients are fresh, the masalas are house made rather than bulk premade. It comes out in the flavors of the dishes. 2. Kindness, the waitress (younger with brow piercing) is so sweet and kind. She's patient with even the most pickiest order. 3. I think I've met two managers here, one was very kind and excited about the patrons. The other, when the chicken tikka masala was off, I asked "is it the same chef tonight?" Very sternly replied "yes. Same chef." But didn't bother to find out further details. It was disappointing because I brought a friend visitin from Colombia and her first exposure to chicken tikka masala wasn't very good :/ Food I've had Naan-5 stars. The best. Perfectly made, excellent dough. Kashmiri Nan- Meh. I've had better. The balance of the fruits, nuts, and sweetness was just a bit off. Chicken tikka masala- hit or miss Lime soda-if you don't like chaat masala, don't get this! Paratha rolls- I'd say they're as good as Kati roll but cheaper! Win! Tomato fennel soup- simple and tasty, couldn't taste much fennel. It's like a slightly spiced puréed tomato soup. Not creamy at all. Malai tikka- amazing, very tender and tasty. 5 stars, slight spice. So good. Good for those who like things on the milder end. Saffron Chicken Tikka- a bit like malai tikka just with an additional flavor of saffron layered on top. Chicken Zafrani- Nice mild creamy sauce chicken. Their chicken is always so tender and succulent regardless of the preparation! This dish was akin to a chicken korma. I don't think ordering from Yelp's third party works very well. I tried it before, but the order wasn't found easily so I waited a bit. Another time I got take out, it was sent to the wrong person, so I had to wait longer for the delivery guy to return with my food. Good thing I was planning on rewarming it anyway.
