Was pleasantly surprised at this location. You could call myself somewhat of a sushi snob, and did not expect good quality fish at a place in Vancouver, but the couple times I have come here it has really met my expectations! I came during lunch time both times (with several years apart for each visit) and it is exactly what I expected. They offer pretty good lunch specials, which a couple of people ordered - a teriyaki bento box, both of which they really enjoyed. My other friends ordered a few different rolls to try, which I had a bite of each, both really good. I ordered the Mio Sushi Chirashi, which reminded me a lot of Korean chirashi due to the kochujang and made me wonder if the place was owned by Koreans. It was very tasty, the fish was fresh, and the bowl was very filling. I always tend to get the traditional chirashi if they offer it at any sushi place as a way to judge the quality of the fish, and just the varied flavors restaurants do it (seasoned rice, more vinegary in the sushi, with sesames, etc.) and what kinds of fish they use. I also find it's a good price to value... and I felt the price to value was good here, I think it was about $13.95 which seemed reasonable if you're looking for good sushi in the area. So if you're in Vancouver and you're feeling like some sushi, I would definitely recommend dropping by here. read more

Originally thought this place was amazing but other the last 3 times I've ordered, it hasn't been a great experience. On top of that, they stop answering your calls at 9:30 so they can leave at 9:45 when they say it closes at 10pm. If they want to leave early, they should update their hours. I would have gone to another local sushi place that's actually open. To place one order I've had to call 10 times just to get ahold of someone. This place needs some new people. I called to place an order for pick-up...some nigiri, a bento and their Japanese Chirashi, but had the shellfish (2 shrimps) substituted with extra Hamachi instead. The girl on the phone, who was polite, said it was a 2 for 2 swap for $1extra. Picked up my food, later stopped at a red light, & took a bite out of what was suppose to be my Hamachi only to find myself chewing on what felt and tasted like watery Albacore. There were 3 pieces of that, but no Hamachi. Although I was running late to get across town, I immediately turned around. I ran back inside. Chirashi in hand, pointing to the Albacore, I asked the head sushi chef, "Is this Hamachi(Yellowtail) or is this Albacore?". He looked at it and responded, "It's Hamachi." Then the hostess walked up to join us. I asked her, "Wasn't I suppose to get 2 extra pieces [of Hamachi] to substitute the 2pc shrimp? To which she replied, "No, you got 1 piece, but I didn't charge you for it." Unfortunately I never did get said Hamachi. The Tamago was also missing. The sushi chef, probably assuming that this customer would not know the difference, scammed me for cheaper fish instead. And lied to my face about it when I drove back to question it. Arrived across town, realizing I was right & disgusted at what just happened. I've served sushi and have been eating raw fish for 30+years. These two are not difficult to differentiate. (see attached pictures) YELLOWTAIL(Hamachi): Delicate, rich, oily, buttery, sweet, distinct two-toned contrast of bright white to it's red-pink streak, obvious abundance of white marbled fat. Almost as rich as Toro (fatty tuna). ALBACORE(Shiro Maguro): Light, bland (Mio's was watery), gradient pale peach to brown-red, firmer marbling, cheaper fish. Not abundant nor traditionally served in Japan, as it reminds the sushi chefs of "old tuna". Often seared with spices & sauces to liven it up. Or packed in cans at the grocery store. The Uni they served was the lowest grade possible, "Select California" aka grade C, used for soup, pastes, etc. It was brown-orange, had an ocean smell/taste (not a good thing), and slimey, falling apart to liquid form. For comparison, the top 2 grades of Uni (grades A and B) is bright yellow, firmer, and sweet with no fishiness, used for sushi. Talk about a HORRIBLE first impression. Low quality raw seafood, thin slices, missing food, bland and watery, not smooth and flavorful. The head sushi chef lied & scammed me. Makes you wonder how often he does this and what other short cuts or malpractices happen there. I've had better cuts of fish from conveyer belts around town. read more

Most Mio sushi in the Portland area are good. This one has horrible service. Took over a half hour for a waitress to give us water and a menu. The next time I called in the order 15min prior, they said it would take 15-20 minutes. After arriving it took another half hour and they missed part of my order. The panda hadn't had sushi of any sort in a while, so it was a pretty good change of pace. It's a bright and clean interior. The glass display cases are filled with fresh seafood, ready for making sushi on the spot. The menu is pretty expansive and probably would take me about 50 visits to get through everything. I got the three-choice bento ($12.95). Picking from the list, I got miso salmon, spicy chicken, and a California roll. It also comes with miso soup, rice, and choice of either gyoza or tofu. Miso soup was very good. Strips of seaweed in it. Healthy panda. Of all the items in the bento, the salmon was the big winner. Awesome sweetness from the miso, lovely smoky flavor, perfectly cooked overall. The chicken seemed more like a small stir fry of chicken and veggies. Barely any heat, and I'd guess any meat eater could enjoy it. The California roll hit the spot and got the panda a little fluffier as the day wore on. A nice amount of food for the price paid. NOT GF FRIENDLY......See update. This place is awesome! Great service, clean location, and excellent food. Lots of gluten free options. When I mentioned I was gluten free and very sensitive, our server was very accomodating and explained what substitutions they could make for the items I wanted, and she brought out the GF soy sauce right away. For the amount of food and the quality, I felt the prices were very reasonable. Best Sushi I had in a long time. By the way: the dragon roll and the bubble roll= OMG! SO. GOOD. I can't wait to eat there again. I highly recommend this place. Update 3/26/15 NOT GF FRIENDLY I went there today and got so sick just a few hours later. There was GLUTEN in my food, apparently. My family and I came here after a long car ride into town from Seattle on a Friday evening. We came in very shortly before the dinner rush and were seated promptly. The menu is MASSIVE! They have a lot of sushi to choose from. They also have some hot food dishes to select from as well. They hand you the menu and you mark off what you want. We ordered a basic bunch of rolls: spicy tuna roll, spider roll, shrimp tempura, and California roll for our 5yo. All were really tasty and fresh. They have a good selection of sake. I ordered the Sayuri sake which delivered a good buzz. Speaking of 5yo, this joint is pretty family friendly. There was a number of families dining there the same time we were. So I left and drove to Oishi Sushi at the Mall. Prices were better at Oishi and the sushi was fresh & delicious!! And guess what. Oishi Sushi SUBSTITUTED tuna and Salmon for the two items we don't care for. Thank you Oishi Sushi for being flexible and accommodating your guest, something Mio isn't. We've been to two Mio locations so far (Beaverton & Vancouver), and I'm totally a fan! They have an extensive menu with plenty of options for adventurous eaters, and those like me who are like "Bring on the tempura and never stop." The pork gyoza are crispy perfection. The basic, non-intimidating stuff like Cali rolls and Double Krunch are fresh and delicious. I left the sashimi up to my husband, and he says the fish was tender and fresh--a surprise based on the price point and atmosphere. For a nicer evening out we may upgrade to Sushi Mo, but for a regular-ass dinner Mio hits the sushi spot! read more

I've done both take out and happy hour at this Mio Sushi location. Both times the service was wonderful. During happy hour, one of the chefs brought us a complementary roll they were experimenting with. It was delicious. The food - what is there to say? I want to give Mio Sushi 4 stars. I really, really do. The food was good and tasted fresh, though nothing jumped out at me as particularly notable (except maybe the tea, a large mug of matcha-ey goodness). And it's in Vancouver! But, expletive it, it took so long for our food to arrive that we were unable to enjoy our meal--my husband was too busy fretting over his need to get back to work. We ended up getting boxes to go halfway through so that his heart would remain intact. This isn't some place that you would expect to wait a half hour at lunchtime between ordering and the delivery of your food--especially when you're the only ones in there. It gives off a fast-food vibe, from the signage on the entrance to the little menus on which you mark off your order. Now admittedly, we didn't stick to just the sushi--we ordered udon and a bento box as well. But still! On the positive side, all the staff members were friendly and helpful. Our cheerful server was cute--she explained absolutely everything to us apparently clueless-looking non-Japanese folks. Which was kind of funny, as I wouldn't be surprised if Pirate Grrl (age 6) hasn't eaten more Japanese food than she has. But I'm sure if we hadn't been familiar with the cuisine, it would have been helpful. The other thing about Mio Sushi that was a problem for me was that it exuded a sour smell. Strong enough that I almost walked right out after opening the door (except that our server was already greeting us). Part of it I'm sure was just that the pregnancy hormones are making me a super smeller these days. But the odor was strong enough that it would have been uninviting even without my enhanced nose. Well, at first there is the mysterious waiting list. You are not allowed to take a seat though there are empty tables. You are not allowed to sit at the sushi bar though only one person is there. Is it that they cannot handle the full number of customers that their restaurant seats? This was explained as a choice which affects the quality of service and food. Seated people can be forgotten. Still it seems this could be ameliorated through an increase in staff. The menu is incredibly diverse with a great selection of sushi and non-sushi items, and our group enjoyed both. The flavors were great. with the fresh flavors in sushi and selective seasoning in cooked food . The service is pretty fast despite the waiting list, and the place is clean. (essential in a sushi place). Without the pointless waiting list, the place would easily be a four star. read more

The service was not that great. Once we received our food, we were never seen again by our server. I would have bought another sake if asked. The food was also underwhelming and the sushi rice was HARD (undercooked)!!! I don't know how a chef could allow this to happen. Also, are the restaurant owners greedy? The only things this place does consistently is never having the items they supposedly offer on their menu, serving sushi that tastes like overly sugary garbage, and playing favorites with their tasteless suburbanite regulars. I went in tonight specifically for ramen, which they offer on their menu in about 5-6 varieties, but didn't have. So, I got the seafood udon and a Texas roll, that never made to the table. The waitress seemed afraid of me and conveniently disappeared after half-assedly taking my order. My husband and I wanted to try a new Japanese restaurant. This one is in the Salmon Creek area. We ate here on a Thursday night. We had no problems with the service. Our order came out quickly and we did not have to wait long for our bill. We ordered the calamari appetizer on a bed of crispy rice noodles. The calamari was in bite sized pieces. (Some places serve calamari so big you can barely get it in your mouth!) We both had a bento box. I liked how it included two gyoza. The tempura was a Panko batter which was light and crisp. My family eats here pretty often. We love the food and the ambiance. Their sushi rolls cover all of the traditional and basic rolls, but also branch out into really creative, fun creations, too! I'm a vegetarian, so I really appreciate all of the veggie rolls they offer. I would give this restaurant 4 stars, but they have some issues with the menu that haven't been resolved. They mark agedashi tofu as being vegetarian, despite the bonito flakes listed as an ingredient. I've mentioned this several times, and it's never been changed, including when they revamped the whole menu! read more

The representative for the company apologized for my experience, is looking into what happened & plans to get back to me. Everyone has an off day, even businesses. The fact they care to make it right speaks volumes on their commitment to customer service. I think that deserves a few stars. We've been frequenting this place pretty often since moving to the area a little over a year ago. It used to be our favorite place. Have yet to eat a roll here that I didn't like. The problem is the service!! They used to have more experienced servers and you never had to ask for a refill of your drink. Something has happened here in the past 6 months or so with the service and they only have 2 servers working usually. Takes a while to get your drink order usually, then it seems like once you get your food they just forget about you. It takes forever to get your bill too, i usually have to get up to find our sever to ask for a refill or the bill. Hopefully management reads this and gets some more staff working there because we really do like thevfooWe've been heading downtown to Sushi Mo more and more often for sushi strictly because of better service. *Update* Maybe they listened. Sushi here is delicious but the noodles are the best. Udon is exceptional but the ramen is out of this world!!! It might be a bit spicy for most but if you order non-spicy, it is very good! The sushi here is bit expensive but it is also very good. Service and waiters here are friendly and if you need anything, don't be afraid to ask! 1/2 star, how do you rate a place when the highlight of the meal is the white rice? Visiting from out of town; establishment could not handle group, service poor and slow; what type of Japanese place does not have beef teriyaki? Well here is the first one! They made one up for me which would have been great at adaptability, but alas I had to pick the meat out of the fat one the plate; the tempura was microscopic and greasy tasting; the chicken teriyaki was dry, burnt, and bland.
