Came here for some take out on Jan. 9th. We both ordered the chicken shawarma on hummus. What an excellent dish. The hummus gets a nice little boost from the very tender chicken and onions and the sauce. Even though I wanted to order the braised lamb on hummus bowl, I would gladly order this dish again. We shared some beets with lebne, which was good (crumbled feta would be a nice addition) an extra hummus for our hosts and a Greek salad... also very nice... which had a nice amount of feta on it. Well, hopefully this covid BS will go away soon and we can come and sit in here to enjoy the food a bit hotter than having to take it out and go home or somewhere else. Still... pretty sure we'll be back. I would have given 4 stars, but when I got to my son's house, I was made aware that there was no pita bread in the bag and too far to go back. Mishmish is a Mustmust. Chicken Shawarma over Hummus and garlic fries is all you need. I know it's super basic and not that adventurous but it literally filled my stomach with warmth and goodness. The chicken is just so tender. I'd also recommend the Burrata Salad- so creamy and rich, and you don't always see this on other menus! We went to Mishmish yesterday for another outing. After our very good first experience we went back several times and have not been overwhelmed. The last couple of times we noticed the chef was not around which may account for the lack of standards. When we walked in yesterday we were promptly seated and the service continued to be as friendly and attentive as always. Unfortunately the food did not shine. For appetizers we got the fried cauliflower and the grilled eggplant. The grilled eggplant appetizer was more feta than eggplant and was dominated by the sour taste of the feta cheese. We even got whole chunks of feta. The cauliflower was decent and certainly was a highlight. Entrees were substantially worse. I ordered the steak over hummus from the menu and we also had the short rib special. The steak had a lot of liquids and discharged them inside the hummus which made it watery. In addition it was tough and chewy- which may be because it was not marinated enough. Either way the watery hummus with a chewy steak wasn't good. Our other entree - the short ribs suffered from being too dry and tough to eat. My wife said she had many short ribs (she's a fan) who tasted much better. We skipped dessert. Overall, excellent service coupled with below average fare. I have to believe this is because chef menny was not there, so we may be back - but only because we know of the potential this place has. read more

I really can't speak to the whole menu, as I've popped in for a small bite. However, I've loved nearly everything about Mish so it's time to share the love via Yelp. I've received excellent service here. Seriously. Everyone is so incredibly sweet and attentive. Serving up good vibes and fresh straight forward delicious meals. Ambiance is fairly straight forward and simple. Outdoor has a few light blue metal tables which feel very Med. Not the most comfortable or shaded area. But indoors feels more spacious and is comfortable. A semi open kitchen is fun to watch and brings a casual vibe to the place which is exactly what I came here for. Good food, great service, and nice vibes. You will absolutely not be rushed either or Both times I got the same exact thing! 3/$15 starter mezze: blistered shishitos, smoked egg plant & beets + labne (thick yoghurt). Smoked eggplant dip is sinfully good and what I came back for, specifically. There are about 10 mezze options, including the fried cauliflower and hummus. Coffee is great. So delicious! So glad I tried this place out for take-out this weekend. I had their curried tofu which come with rice and their whole chicken rotisserie for 2 which included salad, 2 pita breads, hummus, and large serving of potatoes. Our order also came with a whole baguette. Everything was incredible and not to mention, the portions were large as well. This is an updated review since I only came for brunch before. I finally tried their dinner and was glad I did! My boyfriend and I went for Valentine's Day and they had a special menu for the day for $62 each so we decided to order off the regular menu. We started with crispy cauliflower and tahini sauce which was very good although could be more spicy. They also gave us a bread platter with some pickled veggies which was really nice. For entrees we had the oxtail ragout which was a winner and grandmas Moroccan fish, also very delicious. The service was very attentive and and the presentation of the food was also nice. Mishmish is an adorable little bistro-style restaurant a stones throw away from Bloomfield Ave in downtown Montclair. You can make reservations directly on their website and it's best to do so, as space is limited and they can get slammed on a weekend night. It's BYOB and I was impressed that they had the proper champagne glasses for a bottle of bubbly at the ready. Service is attentive, polite, and patient. We arrived for a 7:30 reservation and lingered past 9:30 without any sign of frustration or impatience from the staff. The menu is Mediterranean and Israeli inspired, with a section of hummus bowls and shakshuka bowls. The fried cauliflower and charred shishito peppers are delicious, fresh small plates to share. I ordered the chicken shawarma hummus bowl and got exactly what I was looking for; a heaping bowl of hummus, roasted chickpeas, sautéed onions, topped with a generous portion of tender, flavorful chicken. Mishmish was introduced to us when we first moved to the area. My cousin searched his rolodex of great restaurants and chose Mishmish to take us to. We've got back so many times... we love it. We eat pescatarian, so we get vegetarian or fish. I LOVE the Healthy Mess salad, my all time favorite salad of all time. They also have lots of other good food, and their pita is INCREDIBLE. Homemade, fresh, perfect pita with super good dips like hummus and baba ganoush. Love their use of beets. They've since moved to their sister location in Upper Montclair. Mishmish is definitely a place to try. Went here because friends were in town and needed to show them a nice Byob place. Mishmish was found on Yelp and judging by the reviews we decided to give this place a try. We were all impressed. Atmosphere: The place is small, but very trendy. Lots of lighting from the huge windows. Open kitchen concept. It's a type of place you'd expect from Montclair. Very hipster feel. Service: As we walked in we were greeted and seated. We were with our baby and they accommodated, but creating a space for the baby carrier. The waitress was great, she knew everything on the menu and able to give suggestions. We brought couple of beers and vodka with mixes to the table. They were able to provide us with glasses and ice as well as a bottle chiller to keep the bottles cold. Food: I can't speak for everyone else's food, but I had the burger and it was great. The burger was cooked perfectly. A cool red center with some bomb fries on the side. Great place. I'd love to come back here next time I'm in the Montclair area. It's hard to find a good breakfast place by where I am. read more

Had a really great experience while dinning here with friends. Made a reservation and they had a table ready for us in the back. Not packed, no lines for 7pm on a Friday. Served fresh bread with olive oil (this was okay). Waitress was super friendly and got our orders and food right away since we had an event to go to (A+ service). For an appetizer we shared the fried cauliflower. It was delicious! They only give you 6 cauliflower pieces though. For $8 would have hopped to get a bit more for cauliflower. I got the healthy salad with out walnuts. $12. Totally worth it. Was huge and packed with deliciousness. My friend got the shep salad with shrimp $12 plus another $12 for 5 pieces of shrimp so a $24 salad. Also a bit steep. She said it was very tasty. My friend got a salad with chicken and same deal. My other friend got the chicken hummus bowl that was delectable as well. All in all the food and staff here are great however they are a bit over priced. First visit. Liked it very much but with some disappointment. Natural Mediterranean - nice broad selection on menu and everything was well presented. Excellent complimentary focaccia and olives to start. Nice. Not so nice was the roasted Brussels sprouts - which we ordered and never got and just noticed still on the bill! Service is very nice here but a bit distracted. The octopus looked great, char grilled nicely, but it is was soft, stringy and watery. Maybe frozen and thawed then grilled but a bit unpleasant - not terrible tho but a let down. Served over fava purée with chick peas, swirl of olive oil for style and oddly some grapefruit segments. They were very fresh and tangy tho - couldn't figure why in this dish but it was to have them - I guess. Lentil soup also nice - but a bit salty and not an abundance of flavors and rather flat except for the salt. Salad waste star, very good - greens over ricotta with boiled egg slices, avocado and cherry tomatoes. Not overdressed. Very nice. Grandmas Fish Stew with cod in a tomato broth was ok - but the spices were halfway there - like they were afraid to go all the way. If this was a classic bouillabaisse the mild flavoring might work but with these Moroccan like flavorings the mild approach was like a plain beige suite with a red tie. The Harrissa barely detectable. Not sure cod was a good fish for this one too. Again - not bad / but left you wishing you ordered something different. Chocolate mouse was good - rich and dark with high quality chocolate - but seemed to be a very old style mousse made with butter as it was very heavy. Espresso was excellent - really surprising and less than 3 bucks for a double. Cozy place, friendly staff (maybe needing a bit more training tho) decent food and decent prices. read more

4.5 stars Great place!!! Been here for brunch, dinner and just coffee/dessert. Food is consistently good. So much flavor in anything you order. Their shakshuka is delicious and is good at any time of the day (although a very popular brunch item). The dessert items (limited variety) are also made in house. The restaurant is fairly small, but decent amount of times and also space between you guys so you can have a semi-private conversation. Service is great, super attentive. They take your order on time, water glass is always full and your plates are quickly cleared off the table AFTER they ask you if they can take it away. Bathroom is down the hallway and not actually inside the restaurant. Very clean (and not handicap accessible). It's BYOB. Parking is street or metered parking. I was blown away by Mishmish! I went for dinner one Friday night and was glad we called a few days ahead for a reservation, because they were quite busy. It looks like it's a more casual cafe during the day, but at night it's quite a nice restaurant. First, the food - we got a few apps including the hummus and shishito peppers. Both portions were generous and tasty. We ordered the local mushrooms and harissa shakshuka as well as the grilled Spanish octopus, and both were delicious. The shakshuka was indeed spicy, but just the right amount of spice. Second, the service - my friend and I both commented on not only how friendly our waiter was, but also how well timed everything was. He did not rush us at all and we felt like we were given time to enjoy our appetizers without having our meals brought out 2 minutes later (hate that). Finally, the atmosphere - we loved the cozy feel of the restaurant. Despite there being a considerable number of people in there, we didn't feel crowded into our table at all. Mishmish has consistently had great takeout but after COVID, they are one of the few restaurants in Montclair that I felt comfortable eating at. They've got three or four tables out on the sidewalk and the service was great. There are paper menus and the servers take your payment as soon as they take your order. They also come out and clean the tables quite often. You can't go wrong with the Halloumi and Healthy Mess salads. Pro tip: sub the labne for the eggplant dip in the healthy mess salad! Came to Mishmish on a Sunday night after our original dinner restaurant had too long of a wait. They said they wouldn't be able to seat us and as we were outside on our phones to find somewhere else to go, someone came out to tell us that they could in fact seat us. So that was interesting. But it worked out. I was shocked by how busy it was later in the evening on a Sunday. The restaurant is cute and cozy with tables and a couple bar stools. The staff was really nice and they had a good selection of specials in addition to the regular menu. We started with some dips which were really delicious and served with warm pita. For dinner, I had the shrimp special with vegetables which was absolutely incredible. Others at the table had the Local Mushrooms and Spicy Harissa and the Seasonal Sabich Bowl. The Mushroom Spicy Harissa was good but my mom wished it had more vegetables in it (or anything solid) as it was just really a big bowl of sauce, it also wasn't too spicy. Unfortunately the Seasonal Sabich was a bit bland and too much of the same stuff after eating the dips. I will definitely consider coming back to try some additional plates, unfortunately there weren't too many vegetarian options but there are some good seafood dishes! read more

I love Mishmish! Wonderful, fresh food at affordable prices. Whenever I have family or friends visiting I always take them here and they leave impressed. The service is always very quick and welcoming, but the food is the best part. I like going for their lunch specials where they do small plates 'tapas' style in addition to their full menu. I've tried almost everything on the small plates menu, and my top recommendations are the beet and labneh, the fried cauliflower, and the roasted shishito peppers. I also highly recommend going for brunch. My favorites have been their lox entree and their Israeli brunch. The Israeli breakfast is just a big platter of hearty, delicious goodies like 2 eggs, fried halloumi, labneh, a salad, pickles, hummus, and some of the best homemade pita around. I love this place. I hear the same owner has opened a bakery (called Marcel's Bakery) in Upper Montclair and I can't wait to try it out. Parking is an issue and you have to hunt for a spot. Also, it gets pretty packed so go during a weekday or really early on the weekend. read more

Wanted to explore outside of my comfort zone for brunch so came here after reading the reviews. The place is small and quaint. When I arrived it wasn't crowded so I was seated right away. Parking around the area can be a little tough but not impossible. I had the spicy harissa which was a tomato sauce bursting with garlic, onions, and herb flavors. The dish is not very spicy (for me it was perfect). It came with two poached eggs in the sauce and two pieces of grilled bread. The flavor was amazing but, for me personally, it was a plate that needed spaghetti instead. Otherwise, you're just eating a big plate of amazing tomato sauce. However don't let this deter you from trying it if you want to be adventurous. Caution: if you suffer from heartburn this plate is not for you. Service was fast and friendly. Don't you love when you are torn between a few dishes and your companion also wants to order the same few dishes so you can go splitsies? This is definitely the place for that, because everything on their menu sounds so good. I came with a friend and we ordered baba ghanoush, a shwarma bowl and the burrata salad they had on special. It was all amazing. The first two dishes came with fluffy pita. The baba ghanoush had a wonderful creamy texture and the shwarma bowl came with a large portion of hummus (which I also wanted to order). At Sunday brunch, we were able to get seats at the bar overlooking the kitchen. It just so happened we were able to watch the chefs prepare delicious entree after delicious entree, and we probably couldn't have gone wrong with just about anything we ordered. I had the tasty steak tacos which were served with potatoes, and my wife had the chicken shawarma sandwich with fries, which was decent in its own right. My favorite local Mediterranean spots in Montclair. Food is always super fresh, well-seasoned, authentic, clean, and most importantly DELICIOUS. The place is a little small inside but there's quaint outdoor seating for warmer weather. Only suggestion would be a separate menu for lunch. Some of the dishes are a little pricey for lunch-time. For example: The Grilled Chicken Shawarma hummus bowl is $18. Perhaps having a smaller lunch version for $11 or $12 would drive additional business. Interesting Israeli & Moroccan food at supremely reasonable prices, worth the trip to this tiny modern cafe. Make a reservation bcos the place only holds about a dozen tables, BYO bcos the strongest drink here is espresso, and come a little early bcos parking in Montclair can be tough. Enjoyed very good service, entrees $15-23, we dropped about a benjamin for four including dessert & espresso but without tip. But adult conversation was often a challenge, lots of happy noisy dinners. The Mishmish trio of smoked eggplant, hummus and lebne came with the best hot little pita bread rounds you could imagine, those can easily destroy most appetites on their own lol. A sabich ("sab-ee") plate was a vegetarian mess (but in a good way) of tomatoes, asparagus, sliced hard-boiled egg and more hummus. My dining companions tried the wagyu burger, the mussels entree and a shrimp-merguez-mussel special over linguini, that was easily the best dish on the table, loved those little lamb sausages mmmm. Somehow we still had room for a little chocolate mousse but that wasn't their strong suit, not quite worth the calories. I google so you don't have to: shakshuka is dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions, often spiced with cumin; and lebne is a thick creamy yogurt. Vegetarian rating: 3 stars (if eggs are ok) because of that sabich, shakshuka, hummus, baba ganoush and the many appetizers & sides. Definitely NOT good for groups. I've heard a lot of talk about MishMish over the past year. it seems like everyone has been except me. Our lovely server was so helpful with popular suggestions even the beverages, we had the iced chai latte it was so refreshing. The place was decorated as though I was in a Mediterranean cafe complete with understated designs, cool colors and several seaside-esq things hanging or placed here and there. My jaded lunch partner (MOM) ordered a Lamb burger, I had the chicken Schwarma and we shared 3 mezze plates of smoked eggplant, fried cauliflower and hummus. None of this was an ordinary pick for her. Beef and potatoes are all she likes. All of the portions were pretty large and it all arrived to the table quicker than expected.The smoked eggplant was something serious, it was so serious that I wished I had ordered some to go. The hummus was so smooth and creamy and darn it I should have ordered that to go too! On to our entrees, the lamb burger was so juicy which is surprising since it was well done, cooked as ordered. The grilled chicken shawarma with carmelized  onions and tahini was so good even the next day. There were so many spices and flavors going on in that sandwich I didn't want to share it with my guest.  We left with a fair bill and discussing when we would return. My mom even said this was the best Saturday lunch we have had together.
