My mom and I drove up from Ocean County special for Mishmish because it was featured in a magazine article that she read. Although it is in a downtown area, it wasn't terrible finding parking. It's not like downtown Westfield, for instance, which is congested. The place has an intimate New York feel to it inside. We really enjoyed our brunch entrees. I got the lamb, and it had so much flavor to it. I definitely suggest to get something that the owner cooks himself. We sat at the counter, where you can easily seem them prepare everything. He has a knack for preparing his signature dishes. I wouldn't suggest getting something that the assistants make. read more

Having tasted MishMish's amazing Pulled Lamb over Saffron Cauliflower Cream with Herb Tahini at the City Meals On Wheels fundraiser last Monday evening, held on the plaza outside at Rockefeller Center in NYC, and realizing they were from my home stomping grounds of Montclair, NJ, I couldn't wait to visit their food again. My mom, sister and I went Thursday night and were totally delighted. What we ordered: Shakshuka topped with Lamb Meatballs, Roasted Scottish Salmon Filet with Sautéed Spinach, Halved Red Potatoes and sauce, and small plates of two Lamb Tacos (that approximated the dish I'd had at the fundraiser) and Yogurt Labne smeared around a bowl topped with Roasted Beets. It was all scrumptious and we can't wait to come back again. Service was excellent, byob and complimentary corkage (a much-appreciated policy), and reservations accepted. I am always impressed with the nice touches Chef Meny and his team adds to everything. Been here many times before and absolutely love it here. They have many shakshuka options along with sandwiches, salads, and a Mediterranean mezza (small plates). They even have late breakfast options! I got the vegetarian shakshuka and I'm in heaven. The food and coffee is amazing here and the service was just as great. Nice and cute restaurant in Montclair downtown. We got the mushroom shakshuka, lamb burger with fries and zaatar fries. The shakshuka was my favorite, so good and fresh. My cousin got the lamb burger, the bread didnt look as toasted as the tables near me, and while the patty was moist, he didnt find it very flavorful. My disappointment was the fries, the fries with the burger were more in quantity than that $8 zaatar fries. The zaatar fries sounded good but the garlic and zaatar barely came through. The service was also inconsistent, we ordered before the tables around us and the food came later, Also it took forever for someone to come and take our order and we had to ask 3-4 times for a child's water cup and a take out box. A lot of families come to this place and I would recommend if they have some crayons and coloring sheets for kids, and also some kid cups (my neice got a coffee cup with a straw). read more

Man, I love this place. It's one of the first I suggest when making dinner plans in Montclair. The Tri-Dip Sampler (appetizer) sounds so simple -- yogurt, hummus, and smoked eggplant dips -- and yet, they're legitimately incredible. Must have. If there ever came a time where I went with friends and they didn't want to order it (as if!), I would order it as my entree. It's that good. I've had the lamb burger every time I've been here (unfortunately, I don't have a super adventurous palette) and it's consistently good; usually I find when I order lamb out that it's a bit on the dry side, but this burger is always juicy and delicious. It's a bit small so I would say it's not great for larger groups, but they do accept reservations, which is nice, so definitely go that route if you're going with more than four people. read more

Don't let the word "coffee" fool you in the business name. Yes, they have quite a variety of coffee options, but this place is so much more than that. I'd say it's a mishmish of everything, but I'm still trying to figure out what that means. The staff is very welcoming and the service was friendly and spot on. In full disclosure, this was a Wednesday night. I'm told weekends are nuts and it's difficult to get a table, but the place is small and they do take reservations, so call ahead. The Spanish octopus probably earned a spot in the top 3 octopus dishes I've ever had. The combination of fennel puree, chickpeas, grapefruit and almonds made for a party in my mouth. The lamb tagine, though simplistic, was very tasty and super fresh. And those peas aren't canned. For dessert, we couldn't decide between the malabi (Israeli milk pudding) or the chocolate mousse, so we didn't decide. We got both. The mousse was rich and delicious, but did not pale in comparison to the malabi. Fruity, not too watery, not too dense, and sweet, yet not too sweet. Just perfect. Probably one of my favorite desserts of ALL time. Kudos to MishMish for bringing an underrepresented cuisine to Montclair in a very big way. Like most places in Montclair, it's BYOB so that's a major plus. I'm also a fan of the open kitchen, where I spent a great deal of time admiring the creativity and finesse of the chef and the attention to detail in his dishes. Marvelous Modern Mediterranean Meals! Located right off of Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair, Mishmish is completely unassuming; that is until you try the food. The store doubles a cafe and eatery. From my experience, when a restaurant tries to do too much it ends up losing its identity; this is not the case with Mishmish. The shop is small and modest. The walls are painted in a red-orange hue and are adorn with odd-looking portraits. The restaurant is lit softly giving it a relaxed vibe. At times the restaurant can be a noisy due to the small space and proximity to the kitchen. Seating can be troublesome, especially at peak hours. There is regular seating, which can accommodate 20-ish patrons. There is also bar seating, which can accommodate another 5-10 guests. The bar area overlooks the kitchen, and allows you to banter with the head chef; I highly recommend sitting here! The food is sublime! I ordered the Shepherd's salad and the fatush. Both salads were refreshing and zesty. The green had a good crunch to them giving both salads a great texture. Next up was the hummus. The hummus was perfect; it was smooth and creamy. The pita bread that was served along side the hummus was soft, chewy and warm. For main course, I order the lamb kabob and the lentils. The lamb was cooked to perfection. The texture was remarkable; the meat had a nicely charred exterior along with a soft and juicy center. The lamb was seasoned to perfection. The lamb is a must have. The lentils were good and hearty. The lentil broth was light, not too salty and not too bland. For dessert I ordered the kanafeh, a filo dough and cheese pastry. If you were to have one dessert for the rest of your life this is it! The kanafeh is the perfect dessert for those who enjoy a crispy sweet treat. I also had some turkish coffee. Turkish coffee is like espresso times a million. The Turkish coffee, with its acidic taste, rightly balances the sweetness from the kanafeh. Mishmish is a bit pricey. What you can get at Mishmish for $14 you can find in Paterson for $5. However, Mishmish puts its stamp on Middle Eastern cuisine by adding a modern flare. For instance, incorporating quinoa or tiger shrimp into traditional cuisine. Mishmish does coffee and food right. I came with my gf here the other day to try different food that would arouse our taste buds. And boy oh boy, we got more than we bargained for! We were first served bread and pickled cucumbers and carrots!! Great way to begin. We ordered two appetizers: Shrimp Shakshuka and Charred Octopus. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and was served with bread, while the charred octopus wasn't like anything that I have ever tried before! Normally, octopus tends to have a thick and rubbery texture but the octopus served was very tender and the charred flavor gave it more of a punch, along with the hummus underneath. For the main course: Grilled Striped Bass and Poached Grouper. These are both dishes "From the Sea" and both were very delicious plates. I highly recommend anything off the menu because your palate will be blown away. The service was very friendly especially our server Louis. Chef Vaknin is very experienced and he does not disappoint! We have already eaten here four times and the food is consistently great. The space has a casual vibe and the service is excellent. The open kitchen is fun -- and the chef is always smiling -- did I say the food is GREAT! I'm in love with the grouper -- to me it is the best fish dish I have ever had. The humus is a big hit with our group -- as are the brussel spouts. But frankly it is one of the few places where everyone -- vegetarian to meat eaters leave satisfied. An amazing find just a few steps from Montclair's main streets. It's BYOB And there are two liquor stores a block away. Food was amazing and the service was even better. We spoke to the very friendly Chef Roberto and complemented him on their tasty and well presented Israeli dishes. Makes sure you order the fried cauliflower and pair up the lamb meatball shakshuka with the charred shishito peppers. Three of us ordered the tri dip sampler of the hummus, smoked eggplant, and the Turkish cigars as well as chicken shawarma sandwich and falafel sandwich. Everything was fresh and delicious. We were really happy with the service too. They close from 3-5pm on Saturdays and even though we came at 2:30pm they welcomed us in and never rushed us to leave or order. I adore this restaurant - the food is fabulous, but tonight I need to give it a lousy review because of its stunningly bad customer service. I hope the lovely owner reads this and realizes that the short lady with the long brown hair in a pony tail who is seating customers is not doing him any favors. The restaurant clearly advertises that the kitchen closes at 10 on Google. We got there at 9:51. The restaurant was bustling with at least 3/4 of the tables full and the kitchen visibly still open. The woman who greeted us at reception proceeds to tell us that no the kitchen actually closes at 9:50. (Which is not what is stated online and which clearly isn't true - we saw one of the chefs placing a pot on the stove and beginning to stir the food he had just placed to cook). We stood there arguing with her till 9:53 - explaining we had driven from out of town and showing her the restaurant's ad on Google which advertised the 10 pm closing. She insisted that 10 is when the entire establishment closes. We are now at a restaurant next door in full view of Mishmish and let's just say it's 10:10 and more than half the tables are still full. Had I known that it closes at 9:50, we would have chosen a different place for dinner rather than driving all this way. Why bother advertising a 10 pm closing if in fact you are planning to have a hard, no entry after 9:50 pm? read more

Small, pleasant restaurant off the main commerce area of Montclair. Friendly staff and food that is solidly above average. We had both the small plates for sharing and ordered the mussels as an entree. Everything was tasty, seasoned well, and yet still light in terms of oil and grease. A favorite was the small plate of grilled octopus, which was prepared to perfection - wish there was more of it per serving! Came here to catch up with some of my friends for brunch. We've never heard of this place before but we were feeling adventurous. I'm so glad we did! The area is pretty cool and it's close to some good places to walk to. The food was delicious and the staff is friendly. What more can you really ask for? I got the lamb burger and it was pretty flavorful. The fries were good too. The only real weird thing about the place was that they share bathrooms with some other places in the building. Mishmish is upscale Mediterranean food, and the atmosphere when you first walk in is beautiful and inviting. We went with 2 friends, and we loved everything about it. We started with the tri-dip sampler, which was a great introduction to Mishmish Mediterranean dips, along with beautiful house-made breads. We also had the fried cauliflower, which is the highlight of the whole restaurant. Definitely go for this amazing dish alone. My wife had the sabich, which was one of the best examples of this I've ever had. i had the grilled Spanish octopus over sunchoke puree with chickpeas. This restaurant is a great find! We sat at the bar because they were perhaps the only seats left. But it turned out to be the best seat in the whole restaurant! Because we got to witness all the chefs in action right in front of our eyes! Everyone knew exactly what to do, and worked together with total synergy... Simply amazing to watch! The staffs are diligent, friendly, very knowledgeable, and gave us terrific recommendations. The food is out of this world delicious. We had lamb meatballs and Moroccan fish. They were flavored just right, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with fresh parsley, with tomatoes and red sauce as bedding, the dish have beautiful colors decorated with toasted focaccia bread, which has amazing texture, slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I enjoyed my lunch here. I ordered the lamb burger with feta fries. I was pleased with my meal. I order a cucumber seltzer to drink. I didn't like it at all. On the contrary a person who thoroughly enjoys cucumber may love it esp on a warm/hot day. My van also had a dent in the can. I know it may seem minuscule but I don't like drinking from dented cans. My waitress was very pleasant. She also made many suggestions. The venue is small. However, one could dine here with a group of 4 friends or less.
