I came here with some Peruvians and honestly I cannot recommend it enough! They ordered everything, I have no idea what it is except absolutely delicious. Every single dish was fantastic and the service, food, ambiance, were all exceptional!

Pescado frito / fried whole fish

I stopped by to have a lunch on a weekday. The place was not too busy. I went with the crowd favorite item - Pescado frito / whole fish fry. It was simply the best fish fry I ever had. The fish was big, enough for more than one person. But it tasted so good, I finished the whole thing in a sitting. The fish was fried crispy. I ate almost everything, including skin and some tender bones in the head. I ate everything I can chew and swallow. There was rice and fried plantains on the side. Also it came with a side of salad, which was very good as well. I went for my favorite Peruvian drink, chicha morada. That was good too.

Mishqui Peruvian Cuisine is a valuable culinary addition that highlights the culture & delicious Peruvian cuisine located in Monona, WI! :) "Mishqui" means "delicious" in the Quechua language spoken by Peru's ancient Inca Empire. This restaurant is based on Peru's cultural diversity of immigrants from Spain, Italy, Africa, China; & with its indigenous populations, such as the Inca using cooking techniques/ingredients from its Creole cuisine during its Colonial historical period & highlights popular dishes from different regions in Peru! It is a smaller, casual restaurant festively decorated with Peruvian art, a nice small bar, & when you first walk in you see a showcase of the most scrumptious popular Peruvian bakery treats beautifully displayed in the front bakery window such as the Tres Leches cake or chocolate chip empanada dessert!! You can usually seat yourself & the service has been great the times I visited there! Mishqui Peruvian cuisine mostly serves incredible Columbian/Peruvian style empanadas, stir fries such as Lomo Saltado, seafood such as ceviche, fried rice dishes, plantains, & serve some South American beers, wine, & even Inca cola! They also have exclusive special dishes served only on weekends such as fried seafood platter (Leche de Tigre)! Their Lomo Saltado dish (beef stir fry) made with tomatoes, aromatic cilantro, soy and oyster sauce is truly incredible which I highly recommend! I completely cleaned my plate! The beef tenderloin was super flavorful, well seasoned/seared, & the sauce was out of this world with a rich unique umami flavor I couldn't get enough of that went so well with a side of rice & fries! I also tried their deep fried Pompano fish served whole with sweet plantains, white rice and salad! The Pompano was fresh and fried to perfection!!! If you are looking to explore Peruvian cuisine & culture this is a great restaurant to check out! This place is EXCELLENT!!!!

We came as a group of three and this was all around, a really great meal! I feel like everything was made fresh, and while service took a little bit longer than we expected, I think it was well worth the wait and for the quality. We started with the yuca frita, which was so perfectly crispy and with the creamy, savory, sauce, it is just the perfect way to star tthe meal! We also did two Peruvian empanadas, which weren't too memorable, but were still delicious (because who doesn't love an empanada?). The pork bites with tostones will be beloved by any meat lovers in the group, and I particularly enjoyed the salsa criolla that comes with it. For mains, we did aji de gallina, which was good, but nothing that will blow your mind - it is a comforting, approachable dish for anyone new to Peruvian cuisine. We also did the whole fish, and then a seafood rice combo. All of the mains, I think, were excellent, and my favorite was the whole fish! I'm so glad Mishwui is here and I hope they're here to stay for a while!

This was our second visit. This time for lunch. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. Any questions we had were answered the best they could. Lunch time was nice and quiet, with plenty of choice of seating...AND plenty of choices in the sweets case!!!! The carrot cake..... ohhhhhhh the carrot cake!!!!! That frosting was.... Delicious!!! One side note, they do implement an automatic gratuity, so be prepared to spend a tad more than what the menu says. It is posted at all the tables AND at the counter, they are not hiding it, they do state that it is a gratuity, that is shared with the staff. Just be ready for it. That being said, the food has been excellent both times I've been there and I will certainly be back!

Personally, I'm happy I found this place. I have food sensitivities and the gluten free vegan options are real good. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. I love the lettering on the back wall of the shop. Clean, friendly, and amazing food. They also have vegan gluten free options for desserts. I'm happy I made time to check this place out. Keep up the amazing work and I hope crowds of people flock to your restaurants. I'll be back with friends and telling people.

This place has been a favorite of mine as of late. The food is always flavorful and fresh. Immediate service as soon as you walk in and an attentive waitstaff. They also have many desserts! I tried the chocolate cake truffle and this is dense rich chocolate if you like that but I need to pair it with coffee or tea.

I had a little extra time before my flight back to Denver and wanted something more interesting than airport food for lunch. I'm so glad I tried Mishqui, it was wonderful. I've eaten in many Peruvian restaurants around the country (my dad was Peruvian) and this is among the most authentic I've tried. It's not fancy, but the menu has many traditional favorites on it. They also have a nice selection of Peruvian non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and spirits. I'll have to come back for dinner some time so I can try their pisco sour. My ceviche was straight forward, super fresh, and delicious. The house salad has a nice mix of fresh greens, red onion, avocado, and hard boiled egg with a very tasty house dressing. My server was very friendly and the atmosphere is laid back. It was exactly what I was hoping for. I will definitely be back.

I had cilantro rice and black beans alongside my chicken, all perfectly done. The flavors here are solid and a great introduction for me to Peruvian cuisine. Why not five stars? The food took quite a while to come out, but it was definitely worth the wait. The empanadas were perfectly flavorful and crunchy on the outside. The chorizo had a stronger taste than the beef empanada, but the beef was wonderfully juicy and tender. Would definitely recommend getting them as an appetizer! We were warned that the seafood paella would be spicy, but when we tried it, it wasn't spicy at all! It was pretty yummy anyways, so I'd say it was a very salty dish rather than spicy or hot. The rotisserie chicken was very yummy. It came with two sides and we chose sweet plantains and the fritas. The sweet plantains were soooo good, they reminded me of turons except sliced. Only complaint was that it felt like we had five different servers, which made it hard to get consistent attention or feel any personal connection to the service, especially with our table tucked away in the corner, leading to slow and scattered service. Overall, we had a delicious meal here and will definitely be returning for more. Thanks!

The owner is one of the nicest people you will meet and you can see the sheer passion just oozing from him. He makes you feel like a guest in his own home and he is so obviously proud of the food he serves. That pride is well deserved -- this is some of the best Venezuelan food I've ever had, anywhere in the world. The pabéllon and the reina pepeada are especially worthy of mention, with the pabéllon in specific being one of the best things I've ever eaten. The yuca frita is delightful -- fried to perfection, with a delicious chimmichuri-esque drizzle. The kids arepa is hilarious and hilariously good -- a ham and cheese delight tuned for the very German influenced palate around here. My kids and I hope to sample every last item on the menu. My only worry is that this is not a style of food that generally gets a lot of attention in this town -- this place is always rather empty whenever I come. I would love to see lines out the door, because that's what this place deserves, and that's how good the food is here. The fate of many ethnic restaurants in this area seems to be to go under -- and oftentimes that's not commentary on the quality of the food. The palate of the general population in this area tends to be less adventurous, and that puts restaurants like this at a disadvantage. That is to say: please come experience this place. Please come eat here. Please help make sure that this place sticks around.

Truly a must-go in Rockford for anyone wanting to break away from the reruns of meat and potatoes…read moreof typical Midwestern cuisine. Honestly, this spot seems out of place in Rockford and seems like something you would find in a bigger city. The decor is colorful and bright, the drink selection is very impressive and creative and the menu is broad yet impeccably put together. I've been here a few times and had some excellent meals, though I'd like to mention the recent restaurant week menu. I brought my fiancé and parents here for a weekend dinner and they were a little skeptical about the empty restaurant. For the weekend, there were a lot of people waking right past, but perhaps the sub-zero temperatures were keeping their eyes focused on getting to their cars only. We were greeted warmly by the server/hostess/bartender (she wore many hats that night!) and ushered to a tablescape that seemed almost too nice to be in the Forest City. We ordered drinks per our server's recommendations and were not disappointed. Full of tropical fruits, peruvian liquors, and a little kick (not all are spicy, just ones we chose)...they were a delight. All were served in fantastical glassware ranging from a mirrored martini glass, a stemmed glass with dangling chili peppers, and a gorilla head. Yep, you read that correctly. My drink was served in a painted gorilla head with star fruit on top. Absolutely delicious. We ordered an appetizer with mussels, ceviche, and a potato dish, as well as fried cassava. To my delight all the seafood tasted nearly as fresh as a coastal city where the fish is likely just out of the water. Everything was perfectly seasoned and not too chewy. The mains were another home run-- the guys got a VERY hearty pork stew and a beef and potato dish (so even those who still want meat and potatoes can feel at home here!) and the ladies a fish dish with a red sauce and a squid ink orzo with seafood. Nothing left us wanting more, but for me the orzo was a complete surprise. It was a gorgeous presentation with exquisite color and the flavor-- so light and yet so... there is no other word for it... buttery. EVERYONE at the table needed more than a bite. We rounded off dessert with a passion fruit mousse (honestly we were stuffed but felt we had to try something else as everything was so scrumptious) and rolled out of there talking about how shocking it was to have SUCH a high-quality and unique place in downtown Rockford. They got more tables as the night continued, but I'd have loved to see more. I would HATE for the people of Rockford not to have this experience. A few tips, the prices are higher than some of the other places in the area (as is the quality!), so be aware. Also they make everything fresh so plan for the evening to be a bit longer than elsewhere. But I cannot stress enough that no matter your tastes you will be very well cared for here, and have an experience you'll remember. And if you're not sure what to order, ask! The owners and servers are knowledgeable and friendly. They will steer you well! Tl;dr: This place is a foodie experience seemingly transported from a bigger city, and we are lucky to have it here in Rockford! Give them a try!
