Strolling on Grand Avenue, I was hoping to find a place where I could have a relatively quick lunch since I was on my way to a haircut. I probably could've been a few minutes late since I don't have that much hair to cut, but I just wanted to respect my appointment time for my haircutter's sake. There was no problem with me being late because unfortunately this wasn't a memorable dining experience. The woman running the front of the house seemed convivial with her customers. Just not to me. It didn't bother me until I noticed how she spent time being above-and-beyond with the younger customers. She simply took my order, and that was it. I ordered a rather bland dish, the $14.95 Vietnamese-Style Cabbage Salad with shards of dry chicken breast. It featured carrot, mint leaves, peanut, fried onion, and a rather tasteless fish sauce (Photo 7). She didn't come by to see how I was doing, and I had to go up to her stand to pay the check. Like I said, I didn't give it much thought. At least until I wrote this review. Somehow, the ambiance could make you feel as if you're in Vietnam. I think the noodle soup will do justice for the people who love Pho. Located on Grand Ave between all the other restaurants and shops. Parking is kind of tricky. There is no private lot. You are limited to metered street parking. We were lucky, up the street from the restaurant across from the laundromat someone just pulled out. We went to restaurant depended if we can find parking. They have both inside and outside dining. When we arrived a couple was eating right outside the entrance, sort of on the wide sidewalk. Another table filled up across from them. When we entered the restaurant there were 4 other tables full of people. We were offered a table and sat down. Soon as we sat down we were given menus and water, lemon flavored water I believe. It had a citrus taste to it. It was very pleasant. On the table under glass they also have a menu and pictures of their Banh mi sandwiches. They looked so good I ordered the BBQ pork Banh mi sandwich. I had it minus the pate. I didn't notice the jalapeños until I took my 3rd to last bite and bit into one and boy was it hot. Next time I'm going to say no jalapeños. The sandwich was good. Not overly filling. I could have fit some dessert in, but it wasn't offered. I would have enjoyed a sweet treat to end my meal as I wasn't overly full. My honey ordered the Grilled Shrimp Vermicelli and enjoyed it. I tried it, it was good. Service. I probably used three packets of soy sauce, and it still had no flavor. Why does this place only have 3.5 stars?! The waiter was incredibly friendly and made a point of letting us know that their pho broth is brewed from bones which very few places do since it takes time. The service was super attentive, too. I tried Hue Banana Wrappers for the first time, and let me tell you, the sauce was chef's kiss. I also had the beef noodle soup, adding a squeeze of lemon, hoisin, and mint--pure comfort in a bowl. So dry that on my first bite, when I gently compressed the sandwich to fit it in my mouth, the bread kind of just shattered like a croton and just sort of broke into a million pieces everywhere leaving me with vegetables and meat covered in bread crumbs. The other menu items look really good when I saw them served to other tables, so why bother putting a bahn mi on the menu if you're not going to keep fresh bread in stock?? Very lame. read more

I'm came to have lunch with a buddy of mine. We both got spicy pho. It was amazing the right amount of spicy and great quality meat. As we were eating my wife called and wanted me to bring home some food. I need to note she is a vegetarian so I had to ask our server for recommendations. He recommended two things the vegetarian soup and Bahn mi. I got both just incase, you know happy wife happy life. Well I got the food home and she was doing the happy dance as she ate the sandwich. My friends and I visited on a Saturday night and we had a great experience! We ordered fresh spring rolls and pho. The spring rolls included chicken and shrimp and both the rolls and the peanut sauce tasted great! The pho broth was rich and hearty, the noodles were the perfect texture, and there was a generous amount of meat. Servers were very nice and accommodating and food came out super quickly! We also ordered their thai tea and it was the perfect balance of sweet and creamy. Pros: Beautiful location!! Wonderful, friendly service, quick service on food. Cons: Worst bun bo hue ever. It had decent (not the best) flavor but it was lacking so many ingredients, wasn't spicy, and when you get the regular its like a child size portion. I have been here twice in my life years apart and both times have been a "meh" The food is edible but complicated. I had a banna leaf wrap and the tapioca inside the banna leaf which you are to eat that has a shrimp and beef feeling has the shell of the shrimp still on it. You can't eat it as is. You have to tear apart the tapioca wrapping which is like a slightly hardened gel (which wasn't bad imo) and take out the shrimp and de-shell it. Flavor was good but I felt like a child having to explore my food just for it to be able to swallow.
