Great hole in the wall spot. I've been coming here for years, but today they really surprised me. I called in my order for larb with pork and pad see eew with beef. They didn't ask for spice level on anything I ordered so I assumed it was going to be made as listed on the website. The pad see eew was covered in red chili sauce (see photo) which made it SPICY. I've never had pad see eew served this way either here or at another Thai restaurant and was shocked to receive this in my to-go order. On the website it is listed as "#58. Pad See Eew. White rice noodle pan fried with Chinese broccoli, eggs, black soy sauce." There is no mention of red chili sauce and the person who was going to eat it can't take spicy food. I called the restaurant once I received the order and they said that's how they normally prepare it. The chili sauce is standard. I explained to them that it was not listed on the website and no one asked me spice level when I called in my order, so I expected it not to be spicy. They offered to make another without spice (see other photo) for me at no cost. While it was not what I expected initially, I appreciate that they rectified the situation swiftly. They remade the pad see eew for immediate pickup even though the kitchen was closing. I appreciate their service and their food is always good with good portions for the price. Highly recommend. Just make sure if you don't want your pad see eew spicy, you tell them up front. read more

I think this is my favorite Thai spot in Oakland. The fresh spring rolls were great, fresh light, delicious. I enjoyed both sauces they came with. They had a little bit of mint in them and it was fantastic. Chicken pad Thai extra spicy had a good bit of a kick too it. It was not overly sweet. Leaned a bit more into the sour. I ordered 2 items: spicy eggplant and curry with 2 rice. When I got home my husband asked why I did not order rice. So, I call the restaurant and the woman at the register said that I was lying about not receiving the rice and insisted that she did pack it. There were no utensils either so I believe she must've put it in another person's order by accident. Then she said she could not refund the $7 because their card machine will not allow them... that is a lie. I have no reason to lie about missing the rice but she doubled down. That is horrible customer service and theft. They lost this customer forever over $7. read more

Five of us went on a Sunday evening. Looking for Thai food with outdoor seating because we have a small dog. The food was delicious. We started with the ginger salad and chicken sauté skewers. Both were very good, but the ginger salad was especially notable. We ordered spicy eggplant with tofu, vegetables and seafood, duck curry, mixed vegetables, and coconut rice. I don't think there was a single bite left over. The bill, including a Singha and a couple extra orders of rice came to $120. Very reasonable, and the service was quick. The crab fried rice was delicious but a little too heavy on the garlic, every bite felt like it was overpowering the crab fried rice taste. We took one bite of the mango sticky rice and it was overly sweet, but good. The service was good, it's a small place so the waitress is able to see or hear you if you need anything. Decided to try a new place in my neighborhood and Chao has a lot of good reviews. Guess I ordered on a bad night because my food was not good at all. I ordered the fresh spring rolls with shrimp, they were bland and the dipping sauce was awful as well. Too much cheap iceberg lettuce, not enough noodles and cilantro. I also ordered the Lad Nar, which is a thick noodle in a bean gravy. The "gravy" I received was pure water and tasteless, with a ton of garlic. The worst Thai food I've had. Chao Thai offers a fairly standard, if extensive, Thai menu, with a good supply of indoor seating and outdoor seating that is far enough removed from Grand & Lake streets that only the occasional crazy wanders in. Good lunch specials, although they are perhaps overly restrictive about changes on the lunch combos- I asked for a #3 (chicken pad Thai) with tofu instead of chicken and my request was denied, she said I could only order that ala carte. I settled on Thai food and picked this place off of ratings and just to give it a try. Delivery via postmates was fast! The portions are large and the prices are fair.I appreciate how quickly they made it, but maybe if they slowed down my rice dish might have had some flavor. I ordered the pineapple fried rice with chicken and shrimp. 1 out of 5. Flavorless. I had one large shrimp and one medium shrimp. The pineapple wasn't sweet. If it weren't for the sweet and sour sauce I have at home I don't know what could have saved it. My sauce made it taste like I thought it initially would. It was so bland I don't even think salt was added. It was water in the form of rice. Now on to the pad kee Mao noodles. I got them with chicken and medium spice. If you absolutely love spicy food, I recommend getting spicy. I don't really eat rice noodles often, but for what I had I really enjoyed it. 4/5. ATMOSPHERE: Good location right by Lake Merrit and Grand Theater, right across the street from the saturday farmers market. Great activity nearby, lively. A few outdoor tables available in the long corridor leading up to the restaurant entrance, not much sunlight but can be pleasant if warm. SERVICE: I usually don't write about service, but it was in particular bad. There are some things that are somewhat expected with the food, like utensils, napkins, etc. We kind of had to ask for everything piecemeal, while eating our appetizers with our fingers until we had the opportunity to ask (still had no napkins). FOOD: Standard Thai food. I saw an earlier mention that some of the meats were on the chewier side, which I agree with. The chicken in the green curry was a bit on the unexpectedly tough side. The green curry overall was decent, on par with any thai place. The Pad See Ew was actually very very good, very saucy, with chewy noodles.
