Expensive. I finally was able to try this place out after driving by so much. I ordered the two meat platter of brisket and pulled pork. The brisket came out shredded like the pork and not sliced, weird. Both were tender and juicy. They came out in small portion sizes, very disappointing. It is also served with a little piece of cornbread (and I mean little) and not a roll. They have 6 sauces on the table. The West Virginia smoke was very smoky. The Texas was very Worcester tasting, the Mississippi had a nice spice to it, and the Memphis was not Memphis tasting, it was too sweet. The other two were just ok, KC and I forget what the other is. I ended up mixing the Memphis and Mississippi sauces together. The big downside is the price compared to portion. If the price was cheaper or if the portions were normal bbq portions, it might be ok. read more

I came here for dinner a few weeks ago while on a business trip in the area. A coworker had recommended the mac n cheese so we stopped by to see how it was, and I'm really glad we did. We got there about an hour before closing. All of the staff were super friendly and came by to chat. Since it was pretty close to closing time, we each got a free order of peach cobbler. The pulled pork sandwich was great and the cobbler was fantastic, but for me the highlight of the meal was definitely the mac n cheese. When we mentioned this, the girl at the cash register sent us home with a free pint, which made a great lunch the next day. The staff were really warm and friendly, and the restaurant décor was patriotic and one-of-a-kind. The people who worked here really seemed to care about the restaurant's message and mission. I must admit, I was skeptical of another chain restaurant coming to town but I was very impressed with this joint. The restaurant is cheery, bright, and clean. The service is very friendly and FAST. I really enjoyed the sauce selection at your table--which is great for someone like me who loves to try them all! It is a bit pricey--lunch will set you back ~$12 and you don't get a lot for your money. All-in-all it's a great place for BBQ--just like our good ol' local BBQ joint right down the street. read more

Gimmicky AF. This place plays off the veteran approach to lure you in like The Wounded Warrior Project does as a charity. Once you take a closer look, it's about making that dollar. Kudos for playing the vet card in an area blanketed with service members but your bbq sucks. Its blatantly commercial with hints of blandness and a sprinkling of overpriced. The brisket was dry AF with zero bark, the pork was....a mix between fresh pulled and mushy day old mixed in, the sausage was ok and the sides tasted as if out of a Sysco can. There is a 6 pack of sauces where all but the Carolina vinager taste like Sweet Baby Ray's mixed with Stubb's. Overall this is a Dickeys BBQ in camouflage. I hope next time I visit the area we try a small off the road bbq shack that I'd expect in a rural town. read more

Excellent experience! The food was amazing and the service could not have been better. The general manager James greeted us and told us about the restaurant when we first walked in. He explained that they have an assortment of house-made BBQ sauces and there isn't a single freezer or oven in the building. Once we were seated with our food he came over to check on us, and he even brought us each a brownie and banana pudding. I ordered the black plate special, which is a ribeye smoked until rare then seared until medium rare. It was incredible. My friend ordered smoked brisket by the pound and a pulled pork sandwich and he was not disappointed either. My friend told me to quote him, that he had "the best mac'n'cheese ever." Went on a Wednesday with my mom, we got our food quick, it was fine, the service was cool everyone was nice. What really stood out to me was a gentleman working there took our trays once we were done (we sat for awhile talking) and later came back with their apple dessert. First BBQ joint I have stopped at since being here at Pax River NAS...the ratings are accurate...fact is I give it 5 stars...excellent meat and you get 6 choices of BBQ sauce...the motif is military, mostly Navy cause it's not far from base...all military services are represented and so is law enforcement and emergency responders; as a veteran, places like this make my day specially when the food deserves a 5 star rating...the staff is great, no complaints from me read more

So just arrived to the pax river area and was told, by many people, that there is nothing to do in the area. I decided to pull up my handy dandy yelp app to find a place to grab a bite. Landed on this place, saw the pictures and immediatly had my mouth watering. I got to the counter and asked them what was good on the menu and the response I got was "Everything". I was a little skeptical but decided to order the two meat sampler and got the jalapeno cheese sausage and the "wet" brisket. Now for those who are not meat savy, a "wet" brisket is one with the fat marbled into the cut. If you don't like fat, order your brisket "dry" for a leaner meal. I got one order of sides, which was the mac and cheese, and a drink which I upgraded to support our troops and the men and women in uniform. The wait for the meal was quick. They have a flight of different BBQ sauces for you to dress your meal. I would suggest the smokey BBQ sauce. I could tell the brisket was tender because the moment my fork touched it, it flaked apart. You can taste the hickory smoke and the seasoning crust on the skin. Now on to the jalapeno cheese sausage, let's just say it didn't last long on my plate after I had a bite. The manager walked around to each table greeting all the customer, I didn't catch his name but you can tell he treated everyone like family in his restuarant. It was the best BBQ that I have had in a while and I will be a returning customer in the future! My suggestion to you, is to visit this place if you're ever in the area, if you don't, you'll miss out on this hidden gem. So two reviews in one. As a lunch spot this place can't be beat. You can get in and out and back to work in plenty of time before the boss starts asking questions. The food is amazing and the staff is great. They also play the national anthem every day at noon. Be sure to sign up for their birthday club to get a free sandwich. We also had them cater our wedding. And we could not have asked for more. They arrived on time. Set everything up without causing a ruckus and packed it all up when we were done. Dunno why everyone raves about this place... I have very mixed feelings about it. The first time I had this was when they first came down here and my in-laws bought it for dinner. It was very good and I was very impressed, but when we decided to go eat it for dinner this evening, well, I was very less than impressed. First of all, the girl at the counter was not very friendly. She seemed bothered by the fact that we were asking questions. I asked her if the potato salad was sweet... she said yes. WRONG. Don't get me wrong, the potato salad was good, it was actually the best part of my meal but it was NOT sweet. It was salty and spicy. The good thing about our visit was that the food came out really fast and a gentleman helped us get seated with a high chair for our son. He was VERY nice and very helpful and that was great. However, the brisket was soooo dry and NOT worth the 8 dollars I paid for it. The worst part about this place is that every time we eat it, without fail, we get HORRIBLE diarrhea 10 minutes after we leave the place. I will never eat here again. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. They are great supporters of community, first responders and the military. When my nephew, a police officer, past away they were there for us. They brought smoked pork, chicken and brisket, perfectly cooked, juicy and tender. They brought fresh corn bread, cole slaw, mac n cheese and the best green beans I ever had. All the food was amazing. The kids even got a ride in their huge rolling tank/truck smoker. We are so gratefull and encourage everyone to support them with your business. There's always some sort of Southern hospitality that comes with BBQ places, and this place has it in spades. The workers are really nice, the food is mouthwatering and the the prices are decent! I ordered the NC pulled pork sandwich with cheesy potatoes and chili on the side. For a bonus, my coworkers all gave me their cornbread because they're "cutting down". The BBQ itself was so tasty and moist. They literally overstuffed the sandwich so much that I wished I ordered fries or something. To compliment the meat they have 6 flavors of sauce, which I really only used 2. The BBQ and the smoked. I know my boss really liked the buffalo one though. The chili was amazing. It was really chunky, just the way I like it. I mixed cornbread into it also, but that's just a personal preference. The cornbread itself isn't amazing, but that may be due to it being cold by the time I got to it. I would recommend buying a sandwich if you're going for pulled meats. Among the most American places I've ever been. I came into the block to check out HighTide Games, but they weren't open yet so I decided kill some time by eating delicious meat. Right as you walk in, the girl at the register yells at you. Nobody ever yells back. I let her know it was my first time, and she walked me through the options. Brisket: trim or marbled, half chickens, pulled chicken, sausage: classic or jalepeno cheddar, pork, various sides. She told me that nothing is oiled (didn't know people did that, but sure) and that everything is smoked in the smokers. I held back on asking dumb questions about the smokers and this "oil" thing. Is that really a thing people do with their meat? Intrigued by this "Jalepeno cheddar" thing, which she said was her favorite, I went with that, marbled brisket, and pork, with an extra large "Wounded Warrior" Dr Pepper and [Insert American name]'s Cheesy Potatoes. Apparently last Sunday literally everyone ordered the Classic sausage, which she found amusing. Said it was a "Classic Sunday". Must be some kind of American joke. I made my way over in front of their prep-tables, where another guy started telling me that there's no oil and that everything is smoked in their smokers. We had a nice discussion about the various barbeque sauces. Apparently his favorite is the Bay-B-Q, because he likes Old Bay, because this is Maryland. The food was presented to me in classic barbeque style: on a tray with parchment paper. An unexpected cornbread sat beside the piles of meat, but no other bread. Can't win them all. I went to my table, and began eating. The brisket wasn't as marbly as I expected, but the pork was appropriately moist and soft. The jalepeno cheddar sausage was the standout of the meal. In addition to the usual things that go into sausage, all of which are completely unidentifiable, there were little pockets of melted cheese that would blast in your mouth as you chewed. A shocking and delicious experience. Cheesy Potatoes are always good, but I'd put these at mid-high tier. I think next time I'll try the mac and cheese. I had only gotten 2-3 bites into the meal, when I heard over the loudspeakers "Please rise, as we sing, as we always do at noon, the national anthem". Everyone stopped, stood, and sang the national anthem. After we finished, everyone clapped for a bit before returning to their piles of meat and cheese. I'm fairly certain that various veterans work/eat here. Probably just a coincidence from our proximity to the naval base. One ancient dude with a limp must have thought I was staring at him while waiting around for the game store to open, because he came over and gave me a hug. A lot of people working there seemed to know him, so he must come by and give them hugs pretty often. The guy cleaning tables also had a bit of a limp and was pretty tall, so I assume he was in the military. Overall, it was pretty good. I think next time I'll do a sandwich with the cheesy sausage and mac+cheese. I will then put the mac and cheese into the sandwich and eat it that way. read more

I have had really good Central Texas BBQ, so I was apprehensive about eating at what appeared to be a chain in Maryland. However, I was pleasantly surprised by BBQ that was tasty, seasoned well, and overall one of the best chain BBQ experiences I have had. Since I didn't want to compare their brisket to some that I have had, I decided to go with the pulled chicken sandwich and some jalapeno sausage. The chicken was smoked, but lacked a lot of smoked flavor. However, the chicken fat was rendered well which gave some juiciness to both white and dark pieces. The seasoning was black pepper heavy, but not too thick. The sausage had large pieces of cheese in what seemed to be a massed produced type of "smoked sausage." I much prefer the more crumbly style, but this one was not unpleasant. Again, the seasoning and jalapeno was there but muted, much like one would expect at a chain. Another member of my party got the brisket, and although I didn't try it, it did look pretty solid for chain. As you can tell from the pictures others have posted, it lacks a strong smoke ring and I would assume it lacks a strong smoked flavor much like the chicken and sausage. Overall, that was my impression of Mission BBQ: a strong effort, but could use more seasoning and smoke flavor. It was not bad for a chain and frankly much better than I expected from Maryland. I'm not a sauce guy, but did think the Old Bay BBQ sauce gave a tasty local flavor. Overall, if you want BBQ in the Pax area, it's a fine choice. read more

While in Maryland for a few weeks on business and with not much to do, I decided to eat! Mission BBQ has to be one of the best BBQ spots I've tried hands down. I got the 2 meat sampler plate with wet brisket and pulled chicken, and mac and cheese and baked beans for the sides. The brisket and chicken were both super tender and juicy and had a great smokey taste. The sides were both equally delicious and I wish it never ended! It was about $13 for the plate, two sides, and a drink, and I'd say definitely worth it! I think I'm going to go back after this review! read more

This review has been a long time coming. I have gone here a few times and always enjoy coming back. I have tried all the smoked meats (Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Turkey). They also have chicken and sausage, but I have had a hard time escaping from the normal BBQ menu. The prices are more than what you will pay for if wanting fast food, but for the quality it isn't bad at all. You would pay comparable for something at any of the other sit-down restaurants in the area. As far as sides go, I am a fan of the green beans, baked beans and cool slaw. The corn bread is a little different and in my opinion a little dry, but that would be the only negative thing I can think of. One tip that is nice is if you call ahead you can use the side entrance to skip to the front of the line and pick it up. All in all it is a great place that has a great cause. They do stop everything at noon to pay tribute to America through playing the national anthem. They also have six different BBQ sauces to try out and each have a good flavor. I like to pair the KC style with the pulled pork or mix the KC and Smoky one as well. As for the turkey I prefer the Bay-B-Q for it as it mixes well with the rub. I have gotten take out from Mission BBQ before but my dine in experience is what made me write this review. I visited on a Thursday afternoon with my friend and her 2 year old daughter. My friend had never eaten there before but the cashier was patient as she decided what she wanted. Her daughter was playing and fell and bumped her head on the floor. The cashier continuously asked if she was okay and offered some crayons and a coloring page which cheered her right up. As we walked to the dining area another server offered help in carrying a booster seat to a table which was MUCH appreciated. We went and got our drinks and then within minutes our food was out. I got the pulled pork sandwhich, she had the pulled chicken sandwiche, and we got he daughter the mac and cheese. My friend who isn't much of a BBQ fan loved her food. Said the chicken was very juicy and had a great taste. My pulled pork was PERFECT and with some of the Memphis sauce, I couldn't put the sandwich down. Once we finished our food (like the trays were empty) a busboy came to pick up our trays. I love all the support the give our military and all the photos on the wall are a brilliant tribute to those who have and still serve. My wife and I love BBQ and this place is at near the top of our list. Definitely the best all around BBQ place in Southern Maryland. I am a spare rib guy and this place has good ribs. We have had every meat item on the menu and a couple of the "Black Plate Specials." Never disappointed. The cashiers and line crew always speak when you enter and a manager has visited our table every visit. They take customer service seriously.
