My wife and I came here on a date night. The service was great. You didn't have to even ask for help. There was a staff member roaming around cleaning tables and taking away empty trays. I was asked how my food was as well. I ordered the 12 piece ribs and two sides ; fries and beans and rice. My wife ordered the brisket and fries. We both though the fries were amazing. They had salt and pepper on them and I really enjoyed the pepper. I like ribs no matter what but I'd give mine a 4 out of 5. They were a little on the dry size and I had to use extra sauce. My wife's brisket was amazing. She couldn't finish it so I had a bite and I have to say we talked about the brisket for a couple minutes on the way home. It was that good! read more

Solid BBQ at solid prices! Great quality BBQ in a "Chipotle" style fast-casual restaurant- you order from a set menu, then pick up your food and self-seat. The meat options were great, and the sides were good not 5 stars (sorry, Mission!). I found the cornbread and mac n' cheese to be just ok. The pricing was totally reasonable, and the brisket I had was on par with one of those fancier BBQ places. The staff here are great - very friendly and helpful! They have done a really great job selecting and training employees! Be warned that this place is basically romper room - it felt like every parent with a kid under 5 within a 10 mile radius was there on the Saturday night I came in. Mission BBQ is a fairly large chain that, sadly, serves C'Ville's best 'que. That accolade is not necessarily a knock on Mission's fare. The brisket and ribs, my go-tos, are consistently moist. That can't be said for the majority of places in town. The textures are spot-on, though the meats could use more smoke flavor. I appreciate that Mission offers both baby back and spare ribs, as I prefer spares and most places serve only the former rather than the latter. Mission has a mind-bogglingly large array of sauces that represent all of the major styles of barbecue, and I've always enjoyed experimenting with the numerous flavors. The sides here feel like an afterthought, though they taste just fine (besides the cornbread, which is far too saccharine). The pro-military/America theme here is rather ham-fisted if you skew liberal, but some other Yelpers seem to dig it. While you still have to go to Richmond for some serious barbeque, Mission's meats will curb your craving just fine. read more

Mission BBQ was amazing. I was in town visiting relative at the hospital and found this place on Yelp. Just one step inside smelling the bbq had me sold. I had pulled pork sandwich and fries. They have 6 different types of bbq sauce on each table. Spent time taking with one of the employees while I was eating. Super friendly and great service. I had heard great things about this place so I decided to give it a try. I saw cashiers, I saw people sitting down and an employee talking to them so I was a little confused how ordering worked. You go to the counter and order (menu is on the wall behind the cashiers) at the register then they will call your name when it's ready. I just picked out a table and was going to get my drink when they called my name so pretty fast service even when it was fairly busy. I ordered the brisket sandwich, fries and mac n' cheese. Everything tasted great (fries were good but just reminded me of Five Guys). They have six different sauces on the table plus some sort of vinegar add in. As I was leaving I heard an employee explaining the different sauce types to a customer. The brisket tasted great and a little more than I was able to finish! The mac n' cheese was delicious and a nice side serving. More than the food I really liked the theme of the restaurant. The theme is Military/Police theme with some local PD pictures on the wall. I'm a fan and I'll be back! One important note: if you hear this place is near the Shops at Stone Field it technically is but it isn't by the shops and other restaurants its in a new little strip a little bit closer to 29 close to Costco. read more

With all the emphasis on military stuff I asked for a military discount. They do not give one. Hell, even KFC gives a military discount. They gave me some "Veterans VIP Club card, I joined it even thought the process was a PITA, and I still have absolutely idea what it means. Mission BBQ bears a really striking resemblance to a small chain BBQ joint in the midwest (City BBQ), so much so that I asked the GM if they were connected (they're not). It made me feel at home! Unfortunately, the food at Mission BBQ didn't quite live up to my expectations. I had pulled pork which was nicely smoked, although not super flavorful on its own. I actually struggled to find a sauce I liked, which surprised me with so many choices, but I landed on a combination of the Texas and Memphis choices. I thought the Mississippi honey-flavored sauce was alright, too. The buns were generic, white, and boring. The cornbread was pretty good. The mac and cheese was good, more than I would've expected with its stringy cheese and breadcrumbs on top, although still a little bland. I think the baked beans had one of the really smoky BBQ sauces mixed in, and it was a little overwhelming. I think the French fries would've been good, although they were super doused in salt and pepper to the point that I was literally scraping it off. To their credit, they were fresh cut and mostly crispy. I think my ultimate verdict was that many of these items were prepared correctly but just not to my personal taste. Pro-tip: if you want some meat (not a sandwich) but don't want the full half pound portion, you can ask for a quarter pound (it's not listed on the menu, but it's an option)! read more

This is the best BBQ! My husband and I tasted barbeque at many places, as we were determined to find the best one to cater our rehearsal dinner. Hands down, Mission was the winner. They have such tender and flavorful meats with a huge variety of delicious sauces. The sides are to die for, especially the mac and cheese! Our friends and family were RAVING about the food at our rehearsal dinner, and now everyone wants to go to their store at Stonefield to indulge again! We cannot recommend this place enough. We would highly encourage you to use their catering service too - working with Elizabeth to plan our event was a dream! Feels a little like North Korea in there. Don't go at noon if in a hurry because all business stops for the national anthem and if you don't salute the flag you will get a stare down like in a totalitarian dictatorship when you fail to cow tow to the dictator. The ribs were a little dry and the Old Bay seasoning rub a little overpowering. The sauces were all pretty good but you have to like the sauce along with Old Bay because it's not optional. My husband picked up the food and was having doubts based on appearance--I think they had been through a rush and things were a little messy; we were happy to be pleasantly surprised by how good everything tasted! I had brisket and pulled pork and both were perfect. We shared green beans, baked beans, different breads with our group of friends. Best surprise was the mac n' cheese-I think that's a hard dish to pull off when cooked in big batches, often turning mushy or greasy, but theirs was spot on. The brisket I got today was slightly dry, but fixed quickly with one of their amazing sauces. The reason I write this review is mostly due to the amazing service I received from all the staff I came into contact with. I assume the guy I spoke with, who walked me through the concept of the restaurant and the different flavor profiles of each house made sauce, was a manager. Mission has become my favorite bbq, not only because the pulled chicken and smoked brisket are the best I've had locally, but because the staff are awesome! Very kind and friendly. Probably the best part about this company is their patriotism. They say the pledge of allegiance, they keep a table set reserved for fallen soldiers, and their walls are decorated with memorabilia that honors those that served in the military and civil servants. As Thuan likes to say "Hoooooo doggy!" is my response to eating here. Pretty decent bbq joint (it's a chain, but so what?) in the Stonefield area (nearer Costco). We walked in and it's reallllly well decorated, I mean I don't know if there was a sq. inch of space on the walls undecorated. We got the 3 meat sampler (sausage, brisket, and bbq) as well as the mac n' cheese and a glass bottle of coke, split between the two of us. It wasn't overwhelmingly filling, we walked out just fine and satiated. But with that being said, the portions I feel could be a TAD bigger, not too much, but a little more would make the 13$ worth equated. And the cornbread and mac n'cheese left much to be desired, it was dry and the mac n cheese a bit bland. BUT, the sauces oh man oh man they were all soooo good. My fave was the smoky mountain whichever one, that one is AMAZING. I think it's a good place to try, but we're on a goal to try all the bbq places in Cville so it will be a while before we return. read more
