The sauces are really good, and they are descriptively named for anyone to understand. Prices are reasonable too. I appreciated the layout and flow of the experience. I found the bathrooms up front so you can wash your hands before you get in line. Inevitably something you order will be eaten with your hands. Then its Texas style BBQ counter ordering. Side were good. When I was finishing up, a manger stopped at my table and chatted for a while, asking me how everything was and if there was anything I needed. The whole place seemed well managed and everyone knew their job and role in the assembly line. It could have been a bit cleaner. Laura from downers Grove gave us the Caramel bread pudding which was the icing on the cake, it was warm sweet and delicious, I don't even like bread pudding but this texture and flavor will definitely bring me back additionally the cream corn was thick and creamy not watery with excellent flavor, Service and staff were helpful and friendly. If you have read a few of my other reviews you know I don't play about my money or food. Yes, I'm a very picky eater. My BBQ has to be cooked with perfections with the meat falling off the bone. Well let me tell you about Mission BBQ the meat does fall off the bone and the flavors are quite tasty. My first time here and it won't be my last time. When I walked in I was undecided of what to order on the menu. Just so many selections to choose but I decide on the 5 bone Baby Back Ribs with a side of Mac & Cheese. The cashier Cortney was so friendly and cheerful. Get this they even let you sample items off the menu before ordering. Cool Beans. If I had another star to give for Mission BBQ I would add it. It's rare that a restaurant blows me away, but Mission BBQ is definitely on that list! I stopped during one afternoon while out shopping with my mom and sister. My sister had been wanting to try Mission for months after hearing about it from some colleagues. We walked in and were able to order immediately. The young lady at the counter was really friendly and offered suggestions since we were first timers. I don't recall her name, but she had dark curly hair and she told us about her sick kitty who was dying. :( Anyway, I opted for the pulled chicken sandwich with fries and baked beans. My sister ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my mom ordered the brisket. She had the green beans and mac and cheese as her side items at the suggestion of the young lady who rung us up. The bill came to $55 for the three sandwiches and side orders. We all thought that was a little pricy, but it turned out to be worth every penny. The food was delicious! We shared our meals and found the meat tender and juicy. The baked beans were just the right amount of sweet and tangy. The fries were hot and fresh with a slight kick. The mac 'n cheese was very tasty... as close as you can get to homemade in a restaurant. The green beans had too many onions, but otherwise they were pretty good. I didn't taste the ribs, but my sister liked them. There were several different BBQ sauce options to choose from. We were blown away by any of them honestly, but we each found one that was good enough. The restaurant itself is casual and laid back. It was clean and all the employees were helpful and friendly. I like the food here a lot. However, it isn't the best. I usually order the brisket. Yet, I have had the pulled pork, chicken, and ribs. The sauces are excellent and several choices. Green beans with bacon are cooked perfectly. However, the brisket has no smoke ring. They cook it low and slow, but not following the correct smoking protocol to get the smoke ring. There is a big difference in smoked brisket with and without the ring. This tasted like it was cooked in an oven at 250 for several hours without wood. read more

Greetings my Foodzies, today on the recommendation of a friend, Bill Schuld we traveled to 1570 Butterfield Rd. In Downers Grove to Mission BBQ. Mission is the ultimate Hero Zone; this restaurant pays tribute to Military, Firefighters and Law Enforcement, not only with walls filled with memorabilia, designated parking for veterans and combat wounded military but also with donations to various organizations that help these different charities. We purchased beautifully decorated cups for $2 and all the proceeds go to Illinois Police and Firefighters organizations. Everyone 6 weeks or so the have a different cup for a different organization. It's a walk up and order establishment. As we approached the counter we were greeted with warm welcome and smiles. We that it was our first time there and David the cashier came around the counter and explained everything on the menu. He was awesome. You place your order and when your order is ready they call your name and you retrieve your food. The restaurant is an open concept with wooden tables and chairs, a couple booths, and TVs showing different military, firefighters and law enforcement videos and pictures. Country music is softly playing in the background. The atmosphere is bustling with conversation but because of the high ceilings it wasn't loud at all. The manager JT was out on the floor constantly cleaning and talking to everyone. He was polite and engaging. Everyone we came in contact with was amazing. For this experience we were looking to get a flavor of as much of the food as we could. So we ordered the Brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork and bay-b-back ribs. For sides we went with green beans with bacon, baked beans with brisket, baked cheesy potatoes (their version of Au gratin potatoes) and fresh cut fries. Brisket had a beautiful bark with a flavorful smoke ring, very juicy. Pulled pork and chicken were delicious also. The bay-b-back ribs we smoked perfectly and had a great crust. The cheesy potatoes were packed with flavor, green beans were awesome with the bacon and the baked beans with the brisket had a good heat to it I only wish there was a little more brisket. The cornbread was a little dry but good. Now, add one or more of their sauces (Memphis belle, Smoked mountain, Texas twang, KC classic Alabama white, Bay-B-Que, Carolina Vinegar, Georgia mustard, craftsman special and our favorite Tupelo Honey Heat) and you have a new meal with every bite. JT brought us some blueberry cobbler I'm normally not a big blueberry fan but the macerated blueberries caramelized during the baking and WOW! I loved it. Visited for the first time today. First impression - awesome! The entire establishment was at tribute to the military, police, firefighters, etc. The entire staff was friendly - from the individual who took our order... to the person who handed us our order... to the gentlemen who took our trays after we had completed our meals. It was offered samples of their food as soon as I stepped up to make my order. I asked for a sample of their baby-back-ribs and their St. Louis ribs. I was surprised to receive 2 full ribs to sample (quite generous)! Both ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. I ended up ordering some baby back ribs and a side of coleslaw. There were 6 different sauces on all the tables/booths. My favorite was "Smoky Mountains". The coleslaw was really good. It was flavorful and not overly creamy. Cornbread was also included with my meal... pretty good. What I thought was really great was that they played the star-spangled banner right as we entered the dining area and everyone stood for the entire length of the song with their hands over their hearts (even the people who walked in towards the end of the song). I left feeling really good - and FULL! I would definitely recommend this place and will be back. We shared the three meat platter between two people and chose the moist brisket, pulled pork and jalapeño cheese sausages, and got a side of mac and cheese and fries. We were sorely disappointed with all the bbq.. the brisket was pretty dry, not moist whatsoever. The pulled pork was kinda dry as well. There was nothing to hit home about the jalapeño cheese sausages. It lacked char marks, smoky flavor, everything.. the cornbread was the saving grace of the meat platter. I like how they put pieces of corn in the batter, it was tasty and moist. The fries reminded me of Wingstop fries, nice and seasoned too. The mac and cheese was also really delicious! Tasted like grandma's legit mac and cheese. Overall, the meat was dry and lacking flavor. This place has great BBQ, tons of different sauces and AMAZING service. We are from Texas so we have a high standard for BBQ and Mission BBQ did not disappoint. We tried the ribs, brisket, sausage, and turkey. All were delicious. They smoke all their meats daily on property. My husband and I were impressed by the amount of different sauces to try. Normally there is only 1-2 BBQ sauces. We tried 9 and there may have been even more to try! Now let's talk about service. From the moment we ordered to when we left our service was 5 stars! They found out we were from out of town and they brought a special sauce to try and some desserts for my family of four. We left feeling like family! I've only been here a couple times. The food is very good. I'm especially careful to pay attention because my order was incorrect the first time I went. That time I ordered a meat sampler with brisket, sausage, and turkey. Unfortunately, my order was wrong. Which is a real bummer, because most places don't have turkey, so that was the entire reason I got the three meat plate--which was about $4 more than two meats. Also, I asked the woman taking my order to repeat what meats I'd ordered, and corrected her because she said chicken. Apparently she never fixed it. Because I was trying to deal with multiple trays of food while someone else held the table (their dining room can be a little small for how popular it can be at times), plus they didn't have the side we ordered so I had to find out from the other person what side they wanted, I didn't notice that they hadn't given me what I ordered until I'd already started eating/putting sauce on my tray. At that point I wasn't going to fight my way back up and bring a tray of partially eaten food back to the counter for sanitary reasons, so the chicken went into the garbage and I lost $4. I appreciated that she asked me if I wanted lean brisket or "moist"--yes, that would be lean for me, please. And the food is good, with something like 6-8 different sauces available. The turkey (which I correctly got the second time, yay!) was really good, and their sausage is excellent. They have a "classic" hot link and One that's jalapeño and cheese, and that one is really good--I actually haven't had the other one because the spicy one is so good. I don't live out in the western burbs but I'm out here fairly often. I'd go back here again, but I would just ask them to repeat my order to make sure everything is correct and now that I know what's what, I'll be able to tell if something is wrong. read more

This place needs to modern up. I took individual orders from my folks and called for delivery (my office has used them before) only to find you have to either order full or a la carte catering for delivery, or pick up in person. I didn't need enough for catering and wasn't going back to all 7 of my people, including a VP and director, for non-custom orders. They also don't use any delivery service; I have to drive over and pick it up, like I have time for that during work. You also can't pre-order sauces to go with orders, and beverages are self-serve so now I get to do the work instead of the restaurant. Mind you, we are spending about $90. I can get a $10 pizza delivered in 30 minutes. I don't care how good the food may be. This is not good service for a business lunch order. Never again. Very disappointed. read more

Not only were our food items delicious but the customer service was amazing. Isaac helped us out on our first endeavor to this establishment. He gave a lot of good recommendations and ultimately we got the black plate special which was a juicy ribeye and the 2 meat special with pulled pork and lean brisket. Their Memphis Belle sauce paired extremely well with the brisket while the pulled pork received a good portion of the Smokey Mountain. The side of Mac & Cheese was better than other restaurants I've dined in. The lemonade and the nugget ice really were really the cherry on top. Issac also gave us complementary dessert which happened to be the seasonal carrot cake. I very much would like to thank Issac and I would highly recommend dining here. This is one of those counter style barbecue joints. There pretty tasty. I ordered the prime rib, yes thats right, one of the meats they smoke is prime rib. It's a fairly decent size, it's very tender, and smoked slightly over medium done. I liked it. It's not steakhouse quality by any means but is tasty. We placed an order and the food was done less than 1 minute later. This place is super clean, constant wiping of tables when people leave. Clearing your trays for you when you're finished. They also give back to charities (changes each 6 weeks I believe I learned) via a plastic cup for $2. I can't say enough about our experience which landed us there on sort of a coin toss of which restaurant to eat at within the near vicinity. So glad we tried this place. Was on my lunch break and wanted to try this place. I checked out the menu, on Yelp of course, and the chopped brisket sandwich caught my eye. I knew then that I wanted to order that! I arrived around 12:30pm, was slightly busy, but I was willing to wait. The line to order wasn't too bad, plus it moved very fast. (Maybe I'm being a brat but...) a woman was greeting everyone in line and she TOTALLY skipped me. Now, yes I'm short and did have my face in my phone (checking in) but still. I would have loved a greeting. Anywho, I ordered my food and my order was up super fast. I rushed back to work to dive in! Food was still warm and SOOOOO tasty. The fresh cut fries are BOMB. I enjoyed my first visit. After perusing through their website, I decided on a 2 meat combo 2XL sized, which includes two sides and the drink. The pulled pork was great, but the moist brisket (you can order it lean too) reminds me of Gemato's, who roasts their brisket in an oven. It was tasty but had to be thick cut to hold it together. Didn't detect and smoke and no bark. Cheesy potatoes and mac n cheese were very good. It even came with cornbread. Love the unsweetened tea. The place gets hopping and there's a large dining room. There are some places that you walk into and you know immediately that it is going to be a great meal... Mission BBQ is one of those places. We JUST beat the lunch rush (seriously, the place filled up as soon as we sat down with our food, the line was nearly out the door!) so our order was taken quickly and our food was ready even faster. The menu is pretty clear on what they are offering but the staff is more than happy to help guide you to what you want. And the little tub of bottle drinks you pass is just too good to pass up! I had myself a RC for old times sake. After picking up our food we secured a booth and dug in. While it was hard to choose the food we wanted it's easy to see that you really cannot make a bad choice here. In fact, we were so wishy-washy in our order, wanting it all!, that the staff surprised us by delivering a burnt ends sandwich to our table, on the house! We were blown away that they not only heard us but that they took it upon themselves to go above and beyond. And not only is the food good but the sauces give you a little bit of everything. We normally go all-in on the spicy but I can honestly say I liked all of them (nearly equally). Amazing! While eating we experienced their daily playing/singing of our national anthem - yes, everyone stopped eating and took appropriate action - a pretty cool touch. BBQ spots tend to be slightly more expensive, for good reason, and Mission BBQ falls in line. But their food, service, and ambiance is so on point that you absolutely get your money's worth here. We are now huge fans of Mission BBQ and cannot wait to return again in the future. In fact, this completes the triple crown of BBQ around Glen Ellyn: Firewater, Steamboat, Mission.
