The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa - Presidential suite

The hotel is advertised as a historic landmark and seems charming at first glance, but within the…read morefirst few hours, left me disappointed and I wished I had booked something else. However, it got a bit better later, mainly because the manager was really great with the way she handled matters. I would give the place a 2 starts and her attitude and work ethic a solid 4.5 starts. Overall this averages out to 3.5 stars. First the disappointment part: In my opinion this is not worth the price it definitely left a lot to be desired in terms of quality of rooms. Our 2 room suite had broken furniture in the living room, bathroom and the sliding door between the room was broken. The bathroom window curtain rod was broken and actually came apart and fell down while I was showering with rusty nails falling in tub. There was no walk-in shower which might be okay but the tub was also not cleaned well and a bit rundown. For people traveling with kids or lot of luggage, please be aware there is no concierge service/bell boy or carts, there is also no way to disembark from the car with luggage before parking. Parking is a walk away, so be prepared to walk with luggage. There is a valet service which will help out at extra cost. The room service ends at 9pm. On the first day, the customer service was not good. We got more "No" than "Yes" from the front desk but the customer service improved next day and the hotel manager was really great (Henrietta) which made up for the first day and drove me to give it a 3 star review). We requested a roll over extra bed/mattress. I don't have a comparison of the quality of this in other hotels but the bed we received was like a hospital bed and very uncomfortable to sleep in. The suite faced the front road so lots of traffic sounds and road sounds through the night. The redeeming part: The hotel manager was super helpful and understanding when we expressed our concerns. She saved the day for us, upgrading us to a bigger suite for the next night. While we ended up having some issues there as well, she was sincere enough to remit us one night's stay due to all the issues. Note that the suite we were upgraded to was historic and beautiful. If you like the haunted history associated with this hotel, this would be the suite to book. We did not experience any spooky stuff but the charm and age of the walls and the medieval castle feel was enchanting enough. The suite was surrounded by beautiful gardens and fountains. It was lovely. Overall, beautiful, historic place with charm and a bit of intrigue but I don't think the pricing per night is a reasonable fit for the quality of the rooms and services offered. The rooms could use renovation and modernization without impacting the historic quality and architectural elements. Better staff training to ensure all staff are courteous and passionate about customer service, better upkeep/maintenance, pest and insect control and longer hours of room service /dining would be great. Great manager, thank you Henrietta for your professionalism and service, your attitude and saved the trip for us.

The hotel is exquisite! I can already see a marked improvement since change of ownership. The staff…read morewas friendly and helpful in a executive way. Exactly the kind of service one would expect from a world class historic destination. Leah at the check-in desk was professional and personable. I would return to the Mission Inn again and again just to receive the care and perfessional service Leah provides. Mission Inn is better because of her. Chris G.

Sometimes the food takes a while though to refill and at peak breakfast times you might be left waiting for a while. Despite this, they have a small gym with 2 treadmills and 1-2 benches available for lifting. The pool and jacuzzi is also available. Otherwise, the showers have hot water and good pressure. The beds and room area were clean!

If you need additional accommodation, they will provide a basic toothbrush, etc..... At the front desk. -Mini fridge to store your water, Foods. -You can get a filter dispenser water inside their mini gym area. (Pro Tip) -Good-sized room for 2 to 3 people, clean room, comfortable bed. -About 15 mins to 20 mins to Yaamava Casino/Hotel. -Friendly front staff & their other associates. -You can walk around this big property and get your daily exercise or use their mini gym. 3/5 OK -Bathroom fans can be a bit loud at times. -Mini fridge is kinda loud. -limited USB-C charger. Sometimes their clock USB-C charger doesn't work. -small mini-size gym area. Next, next to Jack in a Box, Star Bucks, a gas station. -Sofas have no additional pillows for support. 1/5 Bad -Murky cloudy water from the bathroom and I read the new 2026 Colton CA water report. It's that bad SMDH. -Got a room facing the freeway side, which was loud and sometimes during past 12PM too. -AC was super loud and does not continue to cool the room if you're hot and sweaty. It would shut off then turn on again due to the temperature of the room, I think. -Mexican food around here is super mid, no bueno. -In previous rooms, I stayed on the wall papers. Is peeling off. -I'm not sure if they have security on site, but other hotels i've stayed at do have them. -Limited washing and drying machines. Some are broken, making guests more difficult if they need to do their laundry. Overall, I enjoyed staying here at the Holiday Inn Express in Colton, CA. You can't beat the price with these amenities mentioned if you know where to shop around and get the best price. Thank you, Holiday Inn in Colton, CA for making my trip an enjoyable stay. See you next time.

On the wildlife issue: Whether it was rodent or bat droppings isn't the point -- either way, it's a health and safety hazard, and that's what my review addressed. On timing, we were told cleaning was signed off around 3:40-3:50 PM and we weren't given access to the unit until nearly 4:00 PM. By the host's own timeline, that leaves only a 10-20 minute window for this to have happened after cleaning -- or the unit wasn't properly cleaned to begin with. Either way, it should have been caught before a family with small children moved in. As for the house rules disclosing general wildlife possibility in Big Bear: a blanket disclosure doesn't excuse an active, uncleaned health hazard in the room our kids were about to sleep in. On "solution after solution": When we first called the property's staff, we were told there was no reported active issue at the unit -- no remediation or transfer was offered at that point. It was only after we contacted Airbnb support directly that a possible move to another property came up, and by then we chose to stay with family instead rather than lose more time getting our kids settled. To be clear, we never requested compensation, a discount, or anything beyond the refund for the booking we could no longer stay at and the playpen deposit. The mention of a future discount, and later a free stay at the owner's personal cabin, were both raised unprompted by her staff and the owner -- I only followed up to ask about the discount after her team had already brought it up, and we ultimately declined the cabin offer. On the Venmo/deposit point: This wasn't in my original review because it wasn't relevant to it; the owner raised it. For accuracy: we received both the Airbnb refund and the playpen deposit refund in full. The mismatch was in urgency -- the deposit was requested and paid promptly to get our kids settled, but getting it returned took three follow-up messages over a full day before it was processed that night. On the unannounced visit: While I was upstairs on the phone with Airbnb support trying to resolve this, the host sent an unfamiliar man to the property without confirming who was there or where. My wife and our two young children were downstairs. Regardless of exact positioning, having a stranger show up unannounced during an active safety complaint is not okay. On the personal outreach: We heard nothing from the owner personally until after this review was posted. At that point, she called, left a lengthy voicemail, and sent numerous long texts to my personal phone. Some of what was shared in that contact was inappropriate and unrelated to the situation, and I won't detail it here out of respect for her privacy -- but the manner and timing of it were unprofessional. Our original review reflected an accurate, factual account of what happened. We stand by it and won't be engaging further in the comments.
