The Coastal Bloom was bright, crisp, and herbal, while the Foray Old Fashioned brought rich coffee and cacao flavors that tied perfectly into dessert. We ended with the candy cap bread pudding and dark chocolate tres leches, both elegant and balanced, the kind of desserts you remember days later. There wasn't anything left of the brussel sprout itself, it was mostly crunchy charcoal. At this point, we all ordered something we assumed would be safe for our main. I got the sliders and a side salad. I had the salad but only of the sliders. The cheese on it was queso, like you use to dip chips, so it was ran all over the place and the burger was a grease ball. I won't even get into what everyone else had, but they had similar experiences. Overall, it was pretty disappointing. Maybe there are other things or other times where this place is better, but it was a swing and a miss for us.

Aubergine is still our favorite restaurant of all time. Not one of our favorites. Number one. We are not especially picky, but there are definitely ingredients and dishes we normally would not order. Because Aubergine serves a completely surprise tasting menu, I was honestly nervous. Spending this much money without knowing what we would be eating felt like a massive gamble. My god, was I wrong. We genuinely loved everything they served us. This dinner taught me that even if you think you do not like something, you probably have not tried it at a restaurant like Aubergine. Before the food began, I told our waiter that I had no idea what cocktail I wanted. I just knew that I loved gin and spicy cocktails. They came back with something custom that was incredible. My wife told them what she liked, and they created something specifically for her too. From that moment forward, I knew we could stop worrying and completely trust them. The dining room only has a handful of tables and is definitely quiet. That can feel intimidating in your head, especially when you are walking into a prestigious restaurant for a surprise tasting menu. But the staff made us feel completely at home. They carefully explained every dish, and anytime I still had no idea what they were talking about, I just asked. Nobody scoffed, acted too posh, or made us feel like we did not belong there. Some of the dishes were so creative that they almost transcended where we were. One course was a soup that somehow tasted like sour cream and onion chips. It was familiar and comforting while still being unlike anything we had eaten before. Many courses also came with stories about the ingredients and why they were prepared a certain way. Those stories were almost as good as the food itself. Each dish felt like it had a reason for being there, which made us slow down and appreciate everything even more. The plating was immaculate, but this was not food that only looked impressive. We have had tasting menus where a few courses were incredible and others felt like filler. Aubergine somehow avoided that entirely. Then came the dessert. The chef prepared an ice cream tableside with local honeycomb and pumpkin seeds while telling us the story behind it. It was so fucking good. It was not only the best ice cream we have ever had, it might be the best dessert either of us has had in our entire lives. We still dream about it. Staying at L'Auberge Carmel made everything even better. We got dressed in our room, walked downstairs, had the best meal of our lives, and then walked right back to our room afterward. It made the entire night feel like its own private world. This meal is extremely expensive. Obviously. But Aubergine accomplished something no other high-end restaurant we have visited has been able to recreate, and it made us feel at home. Even after visiting New York City and trying countless other restaurants there and throughout California, nothing has topped Aubergine for us. If I could experience one restaurant again for the first time, this would be it.

Even the beer tasted off. At that point, it felt like every item that came to the table had a problem. The most surprising part was that the bathroom seemed cleaner and better maintained than the food being served. We spent around $140 and left wondering what exactly we paid for. To make matters worse, several members of my family felt sick after eating here. Between the poor food quality, lack of concern from the staff, and overall experience, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

THE MAN WITH NO NAME The hotel desk clerk heard the door open and the sound of boots and spurs and sashaying chaps on the hard-worn hardwood floor, but he didn't look up at first as he hurriedly finished some paperwork booking a previous guest. The first contact he had with the stranger, therefore, was his eyes. They were soulless. Piercing. Unforgiving. Yet, as blue and clear as a late afternoon sky on the Monterey coast in December, a rifle shot away from Carmel Village. In an instinctive defense mechanism as ancient as man and beast, the clerk pushed his chair back from the registration desk as his face flushed and his heart raced. "Excuse me, sir," stumbled from his lips. "I didn't hear you ride up. Where you coming from? Getting cold, isn't it." "Room, bath, dinner, whiskey," the stranger hissed. "And bed my horse." The clerk tried to temper his trembling hands as he pushed a room key across the desk and pulled a registration form from one of the cupboards. He fabricated a smile as he took in the full measure of the man: tall, lean but taut, a face that was hard and tanned and whipped by the wind and a lifetime of dealing with whatever anyone threw at him, with a beard that covered his face and his past, draped by a serape heavy with trail dust and hiding the bulge of a revolver on his right hip. Hmmm.... It's 2022 and we still have venues where they tolerate their wait staff to treat their customers like second class citizens. We're an Asian family of 5 and the server named Cortni NEVER came and checked on how we were doing, while she was checking on Caucasian tables constantly. The only time she came was when serving our water and food. We asked her for some more hot water when she brought the food but of course, she never came. We thought, maybe she is busy, but nope, she was going back and forth to ALL the other tables refilling their waters. Just to be clear, we were being really polite, saying please and thank you but all we got was just attitude in return. Very unprofessional and do I dare say, "ra***t." Only bright spot was the prime rib and the view. Also, at least another worker was helping our table to our needs much better than Cortni, and brought us some more hot water when we asked him. Avoid her at all costs or you'll feel like it's the 1950's again. This was our second time here and the horrendous judgmental service ruined everything else. The first time we came a year ago, everything was truly wonderful. If you're non-caucasian, make sure to ask the host/hostess, Suzanne or Gavin to have someone other than Cortni serve your table. And no discriminating non-Caucasian tables. All we ask is the same treatment as others. read more

I had a pretty disappointing experience at this restaurant. The food was just okay--nothing special or memorable. The view is nice, but with such limited outdoor seating, I didn't get to enjoy it. The worst part was the service. As an Asian person, I couldn't help but feel like I was treated differently. The staff was rude, and after reading other reviews, it seems like I'm not the only one who has experienced this. Despite plenty of open indoor seats, we were made to wait for over 30 minutes. Once we finally got a table, the servers didn't bother explaining anything about the food or how things worked. We only realized there was an extra table of food outside as we were leaving, which was really frustrating. Overall, between the mediocre food and the poor (and honestly, discriminatory) service, I wouldn't recommend this place. Definitely not worth it. read more

Let me begin by saying I'm definitely biased! If you're old enough, you remember the show named "Cheers". Well, Mission Ranch is my personal version of that because "everybody knows [my] name" there. It's my home away from home. It's a local resort with beautiful views of the ocean, sheep grazing in the pasture, a large outdoor patio with heaters & fire places, and a warm/inviting dining room. The piano bar is my favorite spot, though. Gennady Loktionov (look him up!) plays Monday-Thursday. Another pianist (Madeline) plays Friday-Sunday. From 8-9:30pm, talented vocalists take their turns on the microphone, singing their favorite songs! I do my best to come sing at least once a week, but sometimes I can't always make it there. If you're in town and you're looking for a place to have dinner or drinks, Mission Ranch is your spot! read more

My husband and I have been to, and stayed at Mission Ranch many times over the years. Always eat at the restaurant, which we have always enjoyed. Food has never disappointed, and after a great meal, and drinks, the best part is just walking back to your room at the end of the evening. Things have changed there. We would always see the manager Theresa, and she would personally welcome us back, and make us feel so special. Don't know if she's still there, but somehow I don't think so. It used to feel magical, and homey at Mission Ranch, but Clint, what happened?????? Mission Ranch has lost its appeal. Nobody cares when we go there anymore, nobody there cares about anything it seems. So sad to us. It's definitely not the place it used to be for a couple years now. I had high hopes for Mission Ranch, given its reputation and beautiful location, but unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the Açaí Bowl, and both were seriously underwhelming. The Huevos Rancheros lacked any real flavor--no spice, no depth, just bland. The fruit on the side was warm and tasteless, which made it even more disappointing. The Açaí Bowl was the biggest letdown. Instead of the smooth, creamy texture you'd expect, it had the consistency of shaved ice and was completely flavorless, except for the blackberries and blueberries, which were the only saving grace. The setting is beautiful, and the service was fine, but if the food isn't good, it's hard to justify the price or the visit. Definitely not worth a return trip for breakfast. read more

Although Clint owns the place that does not make a difference at all. Management is HORRIBLE too! They could care less about customer service! Food was ok.... expected more. Clint, looks like from your reviews maybe you need new management that knows how to run a successful place. PS apparently from what I heard from some of the locals, the old 84 year old washed up actor is dating & running around with one of the young blonde bartenders. Our company has their yearly conference here, so this was my first time (last month) visiting the Ranch. Such beauty! The ranch's grounds will take your breath away. While here, I found out one of my favorite actors own this place, Clint Eastwood. So there you go - I have loved everything about Clint since I was a child, and of course, I would fall in love with an establishment he owns. Food was A+. I had sea bass and wild rice, a friend had the prime rib, and the other salmon with pilaf. Fresh as if it just jumped out of the ocean into your plate. We has amazing wines, and for desert had chocolate cake. Just the best. After dinner I was so relaxed I found myself nodding off withing a half hour. I highly recommend Mission Ranch. read more

As a local I love the food here but what a disappointment on saturday 2/19/11. Don't go after 6:00pm or you'll wait forever if your not a hotel guest. Clint your hostess staff is worthless. Told our party 1- 1 1/2 hour wait, that's fine we'll have cocktails. They were out of pagers but was assured they knew where we were standing. After 2 hours was told it would be another 1/2 hour to 45 mintues and that guests had priority sitting. Watching these two dumb bimbos seat duces at tables for 4 was just unbelievable. Restaurant 101 more money seating 4 than 2. Local money comes back more than a hotel guest. Take Reservations and solve all this nonsence. Whaling Station got my money that night. read more

I can't get enough of this place! The view is absolutely breathtaking, with a gorgeous outlook over the ocean and mountains, and the adorable sheep grazing nearby just add to the charm. The buffet was incredible--everything was fresh and delicious, but the egg omelet stole the show for me. The prices are very reasonable, but be prepared for it to get busy quickly, even when they open at 10am. This was my third visit, and it's always an amazing experience. My boyfriend and I drove two hours from the Bay Area to the restaurant to celebrate my birthday. The front desk told us to leave our phone number and they would call us within two hours, so we decided to walk around and wait for the restaurant to call me. This is definitely a tourist spot. But nothing quite beats the view. You get to look over the Carmel lagoon, some fields and the cute little sheep running around the field. At dusk they take the sheep in and heard them into their farm house. Enjoy a cup of soup on a rainy day and watch the karaoke some nights. Recommended for the view, there are few restaurants on the peninsula that are so beautiful. read more

I go here for the Cobb salad's and watch people. If you're single and left you watch people the bar with the piano is more than a show. If you're a couple and don't want to watch the ridiculous single people, I suggest you sit in the restaurant off to the side away from the bar. It's no secret this is a singles crawling spot. Heard so much about this place, we had to try it. Went for drinks and appetizers and sat out on the patio. It was a foggy evening so even though our view wasn't the best, the atmosphere was fantastic. Live piano player, good bar scene, great patio with heaters and fireplaces. Would definitely go back and try dinner sometime too. read more

A must stop when I have guests in town! Not for dinner but for Sunday brunch when they dont take reservations. Line up outside at 10 so you can snag a table on the outdoor deck overlooking a pasture with sheep. Plus an ocean view. It is a buffet with a solid selection especially desserts! read more

Great location in the late afternoon if you can get a table in back looking out to the river and Point Lobos. A bit on the stuffy side otherwise and fully priced given that the food is nothing unusual. Sort of a tourist spot. Go for a glass of wine and skip dinner and the big check. read more

Free parking is plentiful near the Visitor Center and the walk to the building is less than 5 minutes passing by the pro shop and putting green. This restaurant is one of 3 others in that building and overlooks the 18th green with outside patio seating and inside too. Reservations are preferred but they also take walk ins which is what I did. From the lunch menu and recommendation of the waitress, I chose the fried chicken sandwich for $31 that also came with fries. I was seated inside next to their large lecture windows and could easily see the entire 18th hole from green to tee with the ocean in the background. Outside it was a little chilly (late August) but every table there had a small fire pit in its center for warmth. In about 10 minutes my food arrived. The sandwich was large and very good tasting with a large fried fillet and cabbage slaw, aoli and excellent butter pickles. Also the fries were hot salty and tasty. It was a very good lunch. Also, because I presented my gate receipt from the 17 mile drive of $12.50 I got that amount reduced off of my bill. Table service was very professional as you would expect from this very nice facility. Visiting The Bench was a nice experience with the food and views. I highly recommend!

Great place to meet locals and tourists, especially if Kevin is working. We admit that when we walk to Grasings and find that Kevin isn't working, we find another venue. The service on this visit was professional and polite, although the bartender/server was a little short on warmth and personality. Nothing bad enough to spoil the evening, but a smile and a little friendly conversation never hurt anyone. Someone might also want to remind the staff that conversations about staffing problems or the performance of other servers are best saved for the back of the house. Hearing employees complain about staffing and coworkers in front of customers is uncomfortable and reflects negatively on the culture of the restaurant. This a leadership problem that needs to be addressed. Whatever you do, save room for dessert. Their chocolate brownie with chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream is easily one of our favorite desserts in Carmel by the Sea. Rich, warm, decadent, and worth every calorie. Grasing's remains one of our regular Carmel stops, and we'll likely be back.

Unfortunately, we just couldn't get past the corn tortillas which fell apart when you tried to eat the tacos. Ended up using a fork. For dessert, we ordered one of our favorites, churros. They arrived warm, but were very dry and tough. A churro should make you happy. These made us wish we'd stopped for dessert somewhere else. There were definitely some bright spots, especially the meats and the cozy atmosphere, but restaurants generally get one first chance to make us want to come back. Unfortunately, this one didn't.

That seemed reasonable, so we moved without any issue. Another server took our order, and everything was fine throughout the first half of the game. A little later, two other customers came in and sat at the same six-person table we had originally chosen. They were also asked to move for the same reason. Instead of moving, they simply left. At this point, the bar was still almost empty on a Wednesday morning. At halftime, we noticed a completely empty patio with a two-person table that offered an even better view of the game, so we moved there. Unfortunately, our service was then taken over by the original waitress. When she approached our table with the wrong order, she came up abruptly and startled our elderly dog, who barked. Rather than apologizing or correcting the order, she immediately told us that if other guests arrived, we would have to leave. Looking around at the nearly empty restaurant, I replied that it didn't seem like anyone else was coming. Instead of bringing us the correct order, she brought us the bill. The experience left us feeling like hypothetical future customers were valued more than the guests who were actually there enjoying a meal and drinks. It was a disappointing experience, especially at a business that advertises itself as dog-friendly and an official World Cup viewing venue.
