My dog, Violet, was brought in in critical condition with what was ultimately diagnosed as an Addisonian crisis. She required several days in the ICU with around-the-clock monitoring, blood pressure support, constant bloodwork, and incredible nursing care. There were moments when we truly didn't know if she was going to make it. The entire team treated her as if she were their own. Every doctor, technician, assistant, and client service representative we interacted with was compassionate, patient, and genuinely invested in her recovery. They answered our questions, kept us updated, celebrated every small improvement with us, and never made us feel like we were just another case. The team all expressed their love for Violet, and how much they would miss her (while still thrilled she was getting to come home!) Emergency veterinary medicine is expensive, there's no getting around that. Our bill was over $5,000, and that's a significant amount of money. But after seeing the level of expertise, the advanced equipment, the 24-hour monitoring, and the dedication of the staff who quite literally saved Violet's life, I understand what that cost represents. I would make the same decision again without hesitation. Today, Violet is home, eating with enthusiasm, sleeping in her own (our) bed, and continuing her recovery because of the care she received at Mission Veterinary Emergency & Specialty. We recently brought our dog to Mission Veterinary Emergency & Specialty for what we believed was a true emergency: sudden, severe pain, panting, shivering, and a hard abdomen. I'm not a casual client--I've spent well over $20,000 here in the past and have previously had good experiences, so I expected strong triage and clear communication. Instead, even though we were the only ones in the lobby, we waited without a meaningful triage exam or explanation that he was truly safe to remain in the waiting room. We expressed concern several times that this could be bloat or an acute abdominal issue and asked for someone to assess him, but we did not receive the level of urgency or clinical confidence we expected from an emergency facility, especially given our long history there. Because of that, we made the difficult decision to leave and drive to another emergency clinic, where he was immediately taken back, imaged, diagnosed with a disc problem, and treated. The difference in responsiveness, communication, and overall confidence in care was significant. I'm sharing this so other pet owners understand our experience and so the clinic might revisit how they prioritize and communicate with clients--particularly long‑standing ones--when pets present with potentially life‑threatening signs. read more

I was told it would be a 3-4 hour wait when I arrived, but it turned into a 5 hour wait before we seen the vet. I called ahead and was told we would be put up on priority due to the problems my pet was experiencing, which didn't happen. The place is certainly extremely expensive. I elected not to do all the tests that were recommended, only part of them due to the cost them. The blood work price was certainly a lot higher than I've seen in other facilities including the vet school hospital. The vet was definitely all business and straight to the point. Wish I could leave 0 stars. My dog was uncontrollably throwing up which mission obviously advised that we come in to get her checked out. We got there around 4:22am and they got us checked in. After getting us checked in they put us in a room where they left us for two and a half hours. No one asked if we were okay, no one did any sort of evaluation of my dog to see if she was dying, nothing. If you want a vet that will leave your animal unattended to die this is the animal hospital for you. This was completely unprofessional and disgusting behavior. warning ... mission veterinary emergency & specialty [mves] will murder your pet ** do not take them to this clinic. i repeat, if you take your pet here you are placing he/she in grave danger. ** mves and its veterinarians, most notably , dr christa heilman and dr lawrence, are grossly negligent, have utter disregard for our precious companions and family members, are totally incompetent, apathetic, could care less about your pet, or whether or not they kill them and they do not follow the minimum standard of care when it comes to a cat with a severe critical life-threatening emergency such as lily toxicity, for which i brought my baby girl kismet in believing they were the experts and they knew what they were doing and even indicated to me that they would take care of her & not to worry & that she would be ok because i got her there within that critical window. so, they are also liars. ** they tortured & caused kismet unconscionable pain & suffering due to their gross negligence & utter disregard for the life of kismet by willfully withholding & delaying ' critical life-saving interventions that would have saved her life. ** important note to read: mves owned by national veterinary associates (nva). always ask the clinic you are wanting to take your pet to whether they are a member of nva and if they are, do not take them there. lastly, they knew they were not providing the standard of care per the kansas practice act & regulations governing veterinarians. they knew that they could not care for her, they knew they were not monitoring her life-threatening medical emergency in a cat with lily toxicity, who was also anuric ( unable to urinate), and failed to provide the required interventions to stabilize her anuria & her high potassium levels, so instead of doing the right thing they padded kismet's medical records to make it look as though they were actually monitoring my little kizzygirl when. in fact, they were not!!!! then they billed us for labs they did not draw just to support the fraudulent documentation in kismet's medical records to further cover they're lying asses!!! .. and still refuse to refund our money for labs they never drew. lilies are the most toxic and deadly flowers to cats. the lily toxin begins to kill the kidney tubules within only a few hours after ingestion leading to kidney failure and death if the cat is not treated immediately and properly per the protocol. mves, more specifically dr. christa heilman. and. dr. megan lawrence (i refuse to put their credentials because these women should not even be licensed veterinarians, they know nothing of what they are doing ). they waited until it was 14 hours after kismet's lily ingestion despite i had brought her during the critical timeframe which is associated with 100% survival rates, especially in young cats, such as kizzygirl, who was only almost 3 years old and all of the critical blood work related to lily toxicity was all normal [and even towards the low end of normal ranges] when i took her to my personal emergency vet and immediately before she arrived at mves's hospital). critical warning: ** they have only one veterinarian to 60+ patients, per their veterinarian dr. jake kilgore, who admitted this to me on kismet's last day there. **no veterinary clinic can manage and successfully treat 62 patients with only one veterinarian on staff during a 24 hour period. ** it is totally impossible to provide the necessary personal attention, and critical monitoring of their patients' needed & required for accurate, timely, personalized and appropriate care for the many animals entering their clinic with life threatening medical emergencies. trust me, when i say, if you bring your pet to this vet, you are placing your pet in grave danger with a high rate of probability that he or she will not survive because mission veterinary emergency & specialty do not possess the clinical competence, empathy, expert knowledge of even the most well known and ubiquitous life-threatening medical emergency in cats (lily toxicity), the ability to provide compassionate care despite this claim on their facebook page and website, and lastly and most importantly, do not staff enough veterinarians to provide complete, accurate, consistent and timely critical care to 60+ patients while only having one veterinarian on staff to manage this many patients. please, please, please pass this information along, so that other people do not have to suffer the massive heartache that i am going through because of the horrible things that they did to my beautiful, precious little girl who loved me unconditionally! she was my baby, she was my family and i miss her horribly every single day and she deserves justice. read more

Terrible experience. Our dog was bitten by another dog. Long wait, place did not seem busy. The vet started an IV then said my dog needed exploratory surgery for $5000 to see if any internal organs had been affected. I asked if the could do a sonogram instead, which seemed to make her mad. I declined the $5000 surgery and they became extremely rude, literally just handed me my dog. I was first struggling to pay the $200 bill and open the door to leave with my dog in my arms, when I noticed that they had left the IV in. They rudely removed it--no apologies--didn't even hold the door for me. Dog was just fine the next day. Would not recommend this place. Would give 0 stars if I could. read more

I took my dog here in March for Enrlichiosis because we couldn't get him in to his regular vet. They immediately took him away from me and out of sight and I had no idea where they took him. He's always had separation anxiety from me, so I could only imagine how scared he was without me. They called us back and told us he was in bad shape and his condition was guarded. I was allowed to see him briefly before we left becuase they said the needed to keep him for 2 days. According to the rules, I was only allowed to see him twice a day for fifteen minutes, even though he was in guarded condition and it wasn't looking good. Dr. Roach gave me a ppor report on him the next morning, then changed her mind in the afternoon. She informed me that once things were corrected, he would start showing improvement and we could take him home. On the way to see him at 4, she called and told me he coded. When I got there, he was gone. I couldn't be with my boy in his final moments, and I wasn't able to be with him when he needed me most. His medical reports say he was vocalizing a lot. I know he was howling andcrying for me, but I couldn't be there to comfort him becuase of their rules. I tried calling to follow up about what happened with Dr. Roach, but she refused to talk to em or call me back. The receptionist questioned me about what I wnated with her and fielded the call for her. I wanted answers for closure, but she hid behind the woman at the desk and wouldn't talk to me. I shouldn't have been kept from my dog on his last days and it was unprofessional of Dr. Roach to hide from me and refuse to talk to me. Beware of this clinic if your dog is in bad shape and they need to keep them. They don't give visitation exceptions if your dog is critical. I don't recommend them. read more

Yes, it's expensive. It's an emergency vet. Inpatient treatment is especially expensive. Yes, you should expect to be there for like 4 hours minimum if your pet is not in critical condition. It's a triage system. Overall positive experience. I brought my 19yr old cat Ani in for explosive vomiting, not eating, and general lethargy. I just had a gut feeling something was wrong. We waited 5 hours to be seen by the vet (it's a triage system... So it's not ideal but it's understandable). Her vitals were terrible and her blood work showed elevated kidney values and possibly infection. Her X-ray showed constipation and gastric bloating. She was a mess and tanking fast. We talked through the possibilities and they started her on IV fluids and antibiotics. I was told upfront that it would be about 2 days inpatient minimum and was given an estimate. Yes, it's expensive as hell, but I knew she couldn't wait to see her regular vet and I knew she needed to be in kitty cat ICU.  I cannot thank Drs Lawrence, Heinrich, and Pfantz enough for actually listening to me and my opinion of what was going on with Ani. Ultrasound was inconclusive. We kept coming back to the kidney values and I pushed back with GI not CKD. They actually listened and pushed fluids, antibiotics, and dealing with the constipation. I was adamant that it was GI issues (she has a history) and severe dehydration ... not like a chronic kidney disease. I fully believed that with fluids and pooping she would rebound back and fast. Now, Ani is 19 so it's easy to be distracted by her age, but it's just a number. She's spunky and full of life. 36ish hours after being admitted she was back to her old self. Vitals and blood work back to normal range. I even told them that she would prefer the duck based food over the tuna so they gave her the duck and she finally started eating...a lot! I opted to keep her there one more day hoping she would finally poop and fully stabilize.  Staff were all friendly. The techs caring for my cat were so wonderful (I wish I caught their names because they also deserve a shout out) all of them were great when I came to visit at night and gave me whatever updates they could. The Drs answered all of my long and various questions they gave me exact values for bloodwork when I asked (she didn't get to 19 by me not being overly involved in her care lol). During the daily update phone call they stayed on the phone with me for about 30 minutes each answering all of my questions and really hearing what I had to say about her treatment and my perspective. I never felt rushed. It was so wonderful to know that I was being heard and my insight was helping guide her treatment. Also, Katie was awesome during the morning check in phone calls! The goal is always to stabilize until they can see their normal vet for long term treatment and we accomplished just that. She just left her checkup with her primary vet yesterday and great news, no CKD!!! Bloodwork is all in normal ranges and the infection is finally going away. It was all GI and a nasty UTI. Ani thanks all of you for believing that a 19yr old cat can bounce back! She is fully back to her normal self now. read more

I've used the services here at least 4 times. The first time (years ago) left a lot to be desired. The dr (not sure he's still there), argued with me about a treatment options he wasn't considering. He finally relented and my dog was immediately better. But I'd like to focus on my last visit. In December of '22, I took my 16 year old, beloved pet in after what appeared to be a seizure. From the minute I told the front desk that I thought we'd be looking at euthanasia, things became sacred. They were gentle, private and very caring. The entire team made sure to honor our grief and my precious boy, Elton J Dog. They placed us in a dimly lit room, that was equipped with chocolate kisses for Elton to enjoy, blankets, comfortable seating for us, scissors and organza bags for hair clippings... and allowed us to ring a bell to notify them when we were ready for the doctor to come back in. They made it beautiful which started our healing process right then. My own vet of over 10 years (4 dogs) refused to see us. They were too busy. SMH. But ultimately, it was the absolute best thing that could've happened. I will never go anywhere else (than Mission Vet)for end of life services. They were great with both my pugs. They passed a week apart from different medical issues. They were very helpful in the goodbye room and helping get the arrangements made. I most recently made a visit due to my new dog limping around. The vet said his knee had dislocated and she put it back in place. She told us she didn't want to charge us for unessecary xrays and tests. I really appreciated her not trying to charge us an arm and a leg. I will recommend this place any day! read more

Today we had to put down a beloved pet. Our vet sent us to this facility to have additional testing (ultrasound) done. Dr. Soga reviewed the information provided by the vet and suggested an alternative test (much less cost) first. The result indicated a terminal condition. The facility provided a separate room that is dedicated to easing this transition. It was furnished with comfortable couches/ chairs/ a treat basket with all kinds of favorite treats for the pet / books to read to children concerning the loss of a pet/ blankets - I could go on. The room was available for as long as we needed (24 hour facility). We called family and friends who came to say goodbye. There is even a "patient" advocate that checked in periodically to see if we needed anything (something to drink,etc). I cannot thank everyone for all they did. Dr. Soga was extremely sensitive and supportive of a very hard decision. read more

Pet owners that live anywhere around northeast Johnson County: Bookmark this spot. I sure hope you don't have to come here, but it never hurts to have a plan in case of emergency. We left our dog in his kennel for a few hours to nap in the A/C while we were out. When we came home, there was all kinds of mess everywhere (vomit, diarrhea) which was shocking to come home to. Additionally he was lethargic and kinda drooly and shaky. We knew he had to be seen, and his go-to vet had no appointments. I loaded him into the car after a quick bath and took him to Mission Vet. I might've run a red light or two, trying to stay calm, but failing.. With all the Covid stuff, it was tough. I called them when I arrived, and they took him in but I couldn't come with. I totally get it, but it would've been nice to get an update. Instead I anxiously waited for over an hour before calling to make sure everything was ok. Was he napping? In surgery? Still vomiting? Next in line? These are just some of the wild stream of thoughts that were happening. Soon enough, their doc called and told me his vitals looked good, and offered up a few options. Naturally I asked about price, and opted to get him IV fluids, and two meds to help out. If it got worse for any reason, we'd just come back. It was $289 out the door (I do wish they'd emailed me the receipt as they said they would). End of the day, he's doing well and I feel fortunate to have this place around in case these kind of things come up. While it sucked to wait in the car in the parking lot not knowing what was going on, I chalk that more up to nerves, and realize I could be a bit more understanding that this is a tricky time. Absolutely the worst place to take your sick animal. I spent 4 hours waiting to be seen with my dog who had a life threatening injury. I begged to be helped, finally saw a person, got no diagnosis or plan to help then they asked for a 4k deposit to keep him for the night. We left. Hours later they repeatedly called saying they had my dog and needed a deposit to treat him. In that time we'd gone to Blue Pearl, gotten treatment and was on my way home. We appreciate the kind, compassionate care our dog received from the staff at Mission Vet. We brought our golden retriever in last week and this practice was so good to us and our dog. Dr. Hardy (I think that was his name) was kind and thorough when explaining his diagnosis. He gave us all the privacy and time we needed to say good bye to our boy. There is a special room where they thought of everything you would need or want when saying good bye to your pet. It made a horrible situation a little more bearable. My bad experience really started at the front desk when I brought my 1 yo Goldendoodle. She stopped eating and drinking since she woke up Saturday and was very lethargic and vomitted few times until Sunday. I was very anxious and worried she had something in her stomach. When I checked her in, I was told by the small guy with a mohawh hair, "it will be a 2-3 hours waiting for non-emergency" with a dismissive tone. So, I was upset by the lack of empathy and worried that we could be waiting for hours because nobody thinks she was sick enough. So after about 15-20 mins, I told him we will just go to an Urgent care. The staff just said okay, no further explanation, as if we were a bother and not a paying customer. In the urgent care, we were seen right away but my baby's xray suggested that she might have something in her stomach that she might have swallowed and may need a surgery so we were sent back to the hospital. So we drove back 30 mins to this awful place again so my baby can be admitted and be rehydrated. Unfortunately, because of this bad front desk experience, I developed a very low confidence in the hospital and their care. So, I will not be recommending this hospital to anyone I know. In my work alone, we have least 15 dogs and cats/pets altogether and I will not be recommending this place. read more

Brought in my dog after finding her collapsed in my yard. 6 hours and $1200 later, they had no answers. The doctor's best guess was a heat stroke (even though it happened on a cool fall day and early in the morning). I took her to my primary care vet the next day only to find out she had been bitten by a snake! They said she was "very very lucky" and that she should have died in the first 12 hours because she didn't get any steroids, antibiotics or pain meds she needed at Mission ER. I took my cat on a friday morning because he had a urinary blockage. They took him back right away and put me in a room. Which I was grateful for. After about 10-15 minutes the vet came in to talk to me. She explained what was wrong and gave me a cost. Then she told me that if I couldn't afford care, I should not take him home. He would die a painful death at home and I should let them euthanize him instead. That statement let me know exactly how valued my cat and I were as clients. I didn't hear anything from them the first day he was there. I finally called at 5pm (I got to the clinic at 7:45am) to get an update on Lester. The vet tech said she couldn't tell me much and I would need to wait for the vet to call me. Still no call from the vet by 6:30pm so I called back. I was told I would have to wait for the vet and she would call me back before 8pm that night. I did finally get a call back around 7:30pm. I don't believe my cat needed to stay as long as he did. I have had other cats with similar problems that didn't require a very expensive 48 hour stay. At this point I felt like they were trying to get as much money out of me as they could. Especially after the euthanasia comment and no phone call the first day to let me know what was going on. It's always hit or miss here. Mostly miss. I continued to use them because they are so close. Less than 5 minutes away and when you have an emergency it's nice to have some where so close. After this last experience, the close proximity does not make up for the callous treatment I received. read more

Most negative reviews talk about price. Straight up, yes they are a cash-grab. But that's the $99 convenience fee of being seen at midnight when everywhere else is closed. IF ANYWHERE ELSE IS OPEN then save your $$$. Come here in an after hours life threatening EMERGENCY. Another negative review mentioned dr. experience, if your pet will need surgery please ask how many surgeries on your breed/type of animal the doctor has done before, you may need to find another local doctor if the count is low. And third, ask all the questions!! This includes PRICE before agreeing to anything and asking what all your available options are and what the risks are for each of them, how they will be cared for in the back room, what was already done, so there is no miscommunication. a last resort in the middle of the night for my little Stormy. They said to perform tests and bloodwork...but that can run a pretty penny so we waited until the morning for our regular vet and kept an eye overnight, it was not a severe infection. They administered fluids to keep her hydrated. If money is not an issue for you right now or if all other clinics are closed then go here because their staff is trained and experienced. QUALITY and CONVENIENCE is what you are paying for here. read more

While going to a place like this is never easy my experience was horrible. While they were amazing on the phone. Very concerned advised what we needed to do once we arrived. We made it in our girl was taken back immediately as we were told she would be. 10 minutes of waiting doc walks in and basically tells us our worst nightmare my girl has an aggressive cancer. Basically put her to sleep all else will be a waste of money. She said she's give us some time the tech walks in within minutes to ask if we've made a decision through my tears I say no. Doc comes in a few minutes later with same questions. I felt so rushed. She said we could not take our girl to another doc for a second opinion. Taking her home was not an option. read more

There are a lot of negative reviews on here, which made us wary ... but after the corgi hurt his leg last Saturday, and having had a terrible experience at Blue Pearl, we didn't have much choice. WOW, were we surprised. From front desk staff to vet to the tech who discharged us, everyone was kind, attentive, helpful, and explained everything we needed to know. We loved the vet, Dr. Kilgore, who carefully explained treatment options to us, and the corgi loved the tech so much that he didn't want to leave her when it was time to go. I mean, you know it's all good when your dog licks the tech and wants to snuggle with her, right? When we followed up with our regular vet a few days later, he was pleased, and said their treatment and medications were exactly what he would have given. Also, I had eye surgery three days before our visit, needed to put ice packs on my eye every couple of hours. But we were there almost five hours, and halfway through, my eye started really hurting. The desk staff gave me an ice pack, and one of the techs came out to check on me! Seriously, awesome people all around. read more

Mission Veterinarian Emergency provided outstanding care and support for our dog, Beau. The doctors and staff provided exceptional care and always kept us informed while our dog spent five days in the ICU. Most impressive was the care and kindness provided by Mackenzie. She looked after Beau in the ICU as if he was her own pet. She was there for him with hugs, pets, and encouragement even when we couldn't be. The entire ICU Team - and especially Mackenzie- were amazing. read more
