This is actually one of my favorite places around Princeton (I only have two). Mistral lives up to its promise that the menu is creative, the food flavorful and consistently high-quality. Their cocktails are really delicious too! There is actually one or two occasions I felt like they put in too much salt into the dishes, but overall I would really recommend this restaurant. A Saturday in Princeton is always fun...we happened upon Mistral when my go to place was closed between brunch and dinner. We got there around 3:00 and decided to sit in the bar though plenty of seats in the dining room. We each had a lovely glass of rose -$12 seems a little steep but it was very good. I had the Fried Green Tomato BLT and it was delicious . It was served with creole remoulade- very tasty but just a bit too spicy, it almost overtook my meal. We shared the Brussels sprouts in a black bean sauce - divine! Very cool vibe and relaxed atmosphere, we were not rushed. A little pricey $70 for two sandwiches, 2 glasses of wine and some sprouts but I will definitely go back! read more

came here before, the food was pretty good. Recently came back for Valentine's Day specials. Definitely felt the food were not up to expectations. Too much celery in the lobster salad, it's more like lobster flavored celery salad. Scallops were cooked perfectly, but paired with undercooked risottos. Rabbit Gnocchi was so salty.. I need to drink water with each bite. The only thing I enjoyed a lot was the raw oysters, however for price, these oysters were tiny. I like this restaurant but if you will charge $100+ per person (it was 75ish per person but not cover all the choices on the menu, what? never heard of for tasting menu), you need to step up. read more

We came for Valentine's Day and although it was pricey we will probably be back. The potato leek soup was hot and delicious, the fried buratta was good but just needed a pinch more salt. For entrees we got the Babette steak, which was good and rare (but an up charge on a prefix menu) and the the rabbit confit. The potatoes with the steak were cooked perfectly. The gnocchi, mushrooms and sauce with the rabbit were absolute chefs kiss. The dessert was only slightly disappointing- chocolate strawberries should really be chocolate strawberry, there was only one, one strawberry. The molten chocolate cake was good but nothing crazy. The cocktails were on point. Would like to explore the rest of their menu, maybe for happy hour. read more

RV did an excellent job on all our cocktails but surprised us with a phenomenal first round. We had the Beef Tar Tar and smoked fish dip, along with the beets. The thing about Mistral is, the food is amazing. Every time. It's beautiful, perfect, and makes me super jelly that I can't make eggplant taste like that. The menu changes slowly with the seasons and it'll be the best meal you've had all week. You know, if you go there one time in a week. But the service needs work. It just needs work. It's easier to get great service at the bar itself because of the numbers and the fact that it's more difficult to ignore someone directly staring at you. But the dining room service isn't great. When I went there for brunch recently, the cocktail I ordered didn't arrive until AFTER our entrees arrived, and we had appetizers first. The server was entirely inattentive, even for the busiest brunch in the world (which it wasn't) this would be unacceptable. I would have ordered another drink if the one that I wanted had arrived within 10 minutes. And even that is too long to ask me to wait. Didn't entirely appreciate the half assed apology either, which was more an explanation of the bar being busy and the need to help. Like I don't really care about you being good at teamwork. Just get me my drink. That said, the cocktails are exquisite. Everything at Mistral TASTES great. It's just that the experience puts you in danger of having a bad taste in your mouth. My wife and I had dinner at Mistral tonight. Overall impression was great. Lovely space inside and we were seated adjacent to the open kitchen. Cocktails were spot on, although arriving a tad slowly. To be fair the bar appeared quite busy so we understood the wait time. We ordered the Cuban Croquttes and the Burrata for appetizers. Both were amazing and so flavorful. We really enjoyed the inventive presentation and interpretation of the ingredients. I would order the croquettes every time and maybe one serving just for myself. Yes, they are that good! For entrees she had the Bucatini and I had the Pork Schnitzel. Both dishes had great flavors. The bucatini was cooked a perfect al dente and the sauce was rustic and seasoned to perfection. Her only take away was that there was too much sauce and she wanted more pasta! Pork Schnitzel was cooked well and very tender. It was served with a spicy tahini, fig jam and beet salad. Definitely an off the wall pairing of flavors but I did enjoy it. The tahini was a bit confusing as it was very spicy and somewhat overpowered the other elements of the dish. Maybe a little less spice and it would be perfect. I did love the bright acidic flavor of the beet salad, which cut the spice and sweetness from the fig jam. Once again, service was a tad slow but nothing out of the ordinary for a busy night. We definitely enjoyed it and will go back soon. Overall, really inventive and surprising use of flavors and textures in the dishes. Highly recommend Mistral for a lovely night out, especially if you are an adventurous eater. read more

I came here during Princeton move-in day and booked this restaurant for dinner as I thought it would be a nice way to treat ourselves after a 'hard' day of move-in. The location of the restaurant is excellent - close to all of the action, which means that parking, particularly during a busy time, is really hard to come by. After parking a couple of blocks down on a side street, we arrived for our 7:30 reservation. We were quickly seated, but our server was slow to return back to us after delivering us water. We looked at the menu for what feels like 5+ minutes (which, when you have nothing else to do but chat and listen to your stomach rumble, is a somewhat long time) before the server returned again - in addition, the server was a bit of a mumbler so we had to ask several followup questions to make sure we heard everything. We decided to go sharing plates only as it was advised that the entrees were not really shareable. We got the ravioli, cornbread, beef tartare, Brussels sprouts, mushroom toast, and the green papaya & herb salad for a 3-person table. Once we ordered, the food came out at a nice clip. It was a great amount of food, and we were pretty stuffed when we were finished. Standouts were the ravioli (great flavor, lots of lobster, delicious vegetables!) and the salad (very fresh flavors!) - I would have skipped the beef tartare a second time around. My main course was the Bavette steak. My wife suggested it as I usually don't order steak that I can cook at home. But WOW this was probably one the best steaks I ever had. Just had brunch here and it was fantastic- from start to finish. Olivia our server was spot on- friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful. The interior and exterior seats are warm and inviting. My family went to Mistral last night and had the best meal I have had in Princeton. While it is not an extensive menu, each dish was interesting and beautifully presented. The restaurant offers a number of starters and small plates to share along with seven entrees. We started with Cauliflower Beignets, Chicken Liver Toasts, asian styled Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Szechuan Beef Tartare, and an miso based Matzah Ball Soup. The only misfire was the soup which was not bad, but also not special. Every other dish was full flavored and different. I think the hit was the Chicken Liver Toasts. They were perfect to split as a full portion would have been very filling. For entrees, we tried the Salted Duck Breast, House Made Pappardelle with a Rabbit Ragout, and the Seared Scallops over a "clam chowder". Each entree is excellent and something I would order again. We split two desserts --a brownie enrobed in chocolate and the caramel mousse. I even thought the Earl Grey tea was the best I'd ever had. The citrus notes from the bergamot were stronger than any other type I've had. Princeton can be an expensive place to dine and given the quality of the food, Mistral is amazingly a value. Rare. How do you want the burger? Rare. What else did you want? Oysters. Katsu. Oh, how do you want the burger? Back to kitchen--oh, you can't have the devilled egg, has cream. Ok. Leave it off. Btw, what kind of bread is on the burger? Brioche. Oh, and that doesn't have butter in it? Oh, it does. Ok....(long pause), is there something else you can wrap it in?!! Ciabatta. Ok, fine. When we got the oysters--delicious, btw, I asked about the ranch--made traditionally, with buttermilk and mayo? Oh, no, it's made with cream. Ok. Thanks for not telling us. Don't be so upset! Um, thanks dude. Yeah, so this is why we haven't been back. $85 for a mediocre meal with crappy service. The ciabatta was oddly too chewy, big, and lacking crunch, like it had been left next to a stove boiling water. The salad was overly salty. The burger was perfectly rare, the crispy cracker thing left us w greasy fingers, but we were hungry. Also, the extra $2 for fries gives you (drumroll), soggy fries. Mistral is a breath of fresh air for a town who's dining scene can sometimes cling desperately to the past. Princeton restaurants can be hit or miss, with the hits being amazing and the misses being surprising. Mistral is a hit and seems to be only improving. To start, the open kitchen concept is perfect. There's something about being able to see into a restaurant kitchen that creates excitement in the atmosphere. That excitement is then sustained by the high quality of the food. I've had many dishes here such as their pineapple crusted wings, mushroom beignets and tandoori half chicken to name a few. All the dishes are incredibly creative and tasty. I've had a few dishes that were just ok, like the sweet potato pancake, but overall the meals here are excellent. All of the dishes are shared and served in small portions. It's more of a tasting style menu that encourages everyone try as many dishes as possible. The most exciting part of Mistral, in my opinion, has been the opening of the bar. What Princeton has been missing is a go to cocktail bar. There are other places, but I've found their drinks to be average. Mistral however, steps it up in this category with high experienced bartenders who know how to put together a good cocktail. While not perfect cocktails, they are definitely the best in town and the bar area itself has a contemporary/slightly trendy vibe that makes for a great place to hang. Ok I am really at a 3.5 Star here but I will round up. Like many other reviewers/complainers say the prices here are steep and the portions are small. Well, if you are not paying attention to how the menu works your setting yourself up for failure and really your review is not worth reading. The menu is set up into four sections. Land, Sea, Garden and Dessert (something like that). So this being a "small plates" restaurant, order one in each category. If you order a meat and a veggie yes you will spend 35 bucks and leave hungry. The one of each recommendation of mine will run you about $60 give or take a few dollars. So for a dinner for two your at $120 plus tip off the bat just on food. All of the food was excellent, I really enjoyed the flavors and the overall discussions sparked with each bite. This is a place you can keep going to over and over and always want to get something different. They are BYOB but they also have a liquor license. BYOB seemed to be the way to go, I don't even think I saw anyone order a drink. Beers will cost you 5ish, wine 11sh and cocktail 13ish. So yea $120 for food then add a few drinks and some coffees and your out well over $200 bucks. That said for a $175-$225 dinner for two, Mistral was lacking. Overall the food and service were excellent but like on top chef when you expect to be at this level there is room for nit picking. Nit picks- --Runners had no clue which dish was for who --No silverware change between courses --Disposable napkins --Unisex bathrooms- God I love putting the seat down in a public restroom. For this kind of money I don't want the last course's sauce still on my knife, I don't want to "ask for more napkins" lol and I sure don't want to stick my finger up like i'm hailing a cab to declare which dish is mine when the runner arrives. Another note- this place is small. I get the point of these types of restaurants. The chef wants to have his hand on each dish. Awesome- but must we shove in so many tables that it is legit difficult to walk about. Every time the table next to us got a water refill I got an ass in my face. My purse was bumped into so many times I eventually just put it on the floor which I never ever do. Gross So Mistral here's my two cents. Lower prices about 15% to better reflect the overall value of the dining experience, remove one or two tables and make one bathroom men's and one women's. read more

I was looking forward to dining at Mistral as the decor and look from the outside was certainly intriguing and they are BYOB. The kitchen is wide open to the guests and the colors are light and refreshing. Its a fun open setting. The service was certainly on point. The server was well-versed on all of the dishes. Unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. My overall impression was oil, oil and more oil, to the point that my stomach was not pleased with me at the end of this meal. We had the fennel salad, white miso mackerel, fluke sashimi, smoked roast chicken, and the bavette steak. When I asked myself if I would order any of these dishes again, I could not say yes to any of them. I would love to hear that this restaurant makes some changes especially in the kitchen. Wanted to eat some seafood for our 1st dinner in Princeton and came here solely for their grilled squid salad item. We arrived at the restaurant at around 6ish and the hostess said that the wait was 45mins! We're with our baby so waiting that long wasn't an option. Luckily we looked over and noticed that they had a pretty empty bar area. The host mentioned that it was a first come first serve basis and they do serve their dinner menu here as well as a bar menu so we were welcomed to dine there. Score! We opted to sit outside since it was a nice and mild night. We also had a stroller so it was perfect to be out there and out of the way. Service was friendly and at times our server was a bit slow and forgetful. Luckily there were other servers helping out which saved him. We saw a lot of good looking items coming out of the kitchen. Beautifully presented. The menu was quite eclectic and had an Asian Mediterranean flair. These dishes were definitely perfect for sharing. Unfortunately, the squid dish was sold out! They replaced it with a monkfish dish which did not disappoint. We weren't that hungry so we ordered 3 plates to share: Grilled scallop salad - perfectly balanced with savory, sour, and sweet notes. There were contrasting textures that were pleasing to the palate: soft, creamy, & crunchy. Overall, delicious and interesting. Monkfish special - the brown jus along with the oyster mushrooms gave this dish such a rich and luxurious mouthfeel. The monkfish was perfectly cooked and unctuous. The hollandaise was surprisingly light with a right amount of acidity. Superb! Jerk pork ribs - this dish wasn't as thrilling as the other 2, but my hubby enjoyed it very much. The pork could have been cooked a touch bit longer. I'm not a big fan of savory applications of sweet spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, & allspice. The seasonings of this dish had all of these flavors, I guess that's what jerk is composed of. The pineapple relish was a nice compliment to this slightly spicy dish. Overall, I would definitely come back to this restaurant to try their other dishes. I was skeptical of their Asian and Mediterranean fusion, but it actually works. Excellent farm to table cuisine in downtown Princeton. Though they don't boast an extensive wine list--nor do they offer Pappy like nearby Agricola--it is BYOB with no corkage fee which is really a plus in my book. Not only do you get to play somm for a night, it saves you from the usual upcharge on a bottle of wine at a restaurant. Could be better advertised though, I saw two couples disappointed by the lack of a wine list in my general vicinity. The homemade drinks sort of make up for it though! I got the raspberry shiso kombucha, and it made a great digestif between courses and following the meal. Very smooth and balanced flavor with sweet ripe raspberries on top. Every course we got was complex and well thought out without being overly complicated. The highlight of the meal for me was the roasted sweetbreads with shaved black truffles and corn gnocchi. The interplay between the textures of the gnocchi and the sweetbreads was fascinating and the richness of the truffles and mushroom jus just made it all the more decadent. Another great course was the grilled green beans with king oyster mushrooms and crispy shallots. It's a witty upscale reimagining of the typical green bean casserole, and the shallots are literally crack cocaine. Overall, I enjoyed the experience I had here. The tapas style meant I got to experience a lot of different things and the food matched the price tag. The service was good, if terse. I will definitely come back. read more

Well I just threw down about a $100 dollars to choke down a late lunch and get the heck out of this place as fast as possible. Apparently a party had a good size birthday lunch in the dinning room and after they were done the ladies were not finished partying. So they spilled into the bar WITH THE KIDS IN TOW who proceeded to run around the bar as the guys took up every table in the bar. The staff all said the manager knew and said "what can you do"? I know what you do you tell them "No Kids In The Bar". It was absolutely ridiculous. The bartenders were very nice and were defiantly loosing business as the tables were taken up by the non drinking guys and kids were leaving as quick as possible. Another staff member showed up for work and said out loud "what the heck people come out to get away from their kids not this". Such a shame, we ended up packing half the lunch to go. Wow what a dining experience! I always thought New Jersey was missing a few great 5 Star restaurant but apparently I just haven't been to the right ones. Mistral is a cozy open kitchen restaurant in the heart of downtown Princeton. It's upscale, trendy and DELICIOUS. Before I get to the food I just want to say that the service is great, the prices are on the higher end but extremely reasonable for the quality and the portions are pretty large. The food: I thoroughly loved every single dish except one, and even that dish I still enjoyed. They start you off with a curry-esque (Thai possibly?) rice cracker basket. They are super flavorful and light, a great way to prepare your pallet. Your drinks come out and they are awesome. We decided to get a BUNCH of things as can be seen in the pictures. The first thing we tried were the oysters. They had beausoleil with their signature accompaniments. Perfect balance of all flavors and super fresh. I could have ate 20. Then were the biscuits. They were to die for. Super light and packed with flavor from the special butter. We then had the octopus beignets which were also outstanding. They were like much lighter and larger "takoyaki" that you might get at a Japanese restaurant. Definitely worth it. The largest plates started coming out at that point and we started with the squid and kale salad. This was the one dish we weren't thrilled with. It was very salty and a bit not to our taste. It was severely lacking in the squid department and we definitely could have done with out it. It was still good enough to eat most of it though just not a course we would get again. The steak tartare with massaman curry was amazing, good amount of steak and super flavorful. Finally for the small plates we had what we considered the best bite of the night, the burrata and peaches with prosciutto. This was so perfect. Every bite was perfectly balanced with creamy, sweet, fresh, salty, chewy. Definitely get this if it's available. We then moved onto entrees which we decided to split. We were first presented the duck ramen. They offered to split it into two for us knowing that we were sharing. They gave us each our own small bowl and instead of splitting the beach egg, they gave us each our own which was much appreciated. The ramen was one of the better ramens I have had in my life, you can easily scroll through my reviews and see I take ramen seriously. Though not the best ramen I have EVER had this stuff was the real deal and would satisfy a craving any day. Our second entree was seared scallops with a chowder and razor clams. It was also delicious of course. The scallops were prepared perfectly and the addition of the razor clams to the chowder underneath made the dish perfectly meaty. Even though we were stuffed by this time, we decided to get two desserts. The frozen beehive and the peach upside down cake. Both were very good but not without flaws. The beehive could definitely have used a better "inside to outside" ratio. The sweet Meringue was a bit overpowering and could have used some more balancing from the lemon inside. Still delicious and great when I'm feeling in the mood for more sweet. The peach upside down cake was also very good and it's only difficulty was that all I could taste at some points was cardamom, it's a great flavor so not a terrible thing. They also claimed they had called me 6 minutes before I canceled it, which is unequivocally false. The reservation was for a special occasion and I had to scramble to find an alternative. They conveniently let slip that they have a private party the same night, which would lead any reasonable person to wonder if that wasn't the real reason my reservation was mysteriously canceled after logging a call to me that never actually took place. The dishes are all small portions so we were told to order 3 per person -- this comes out to be pretty expensive. And I don't think the food or ambiance justifies the price - some dishes are actually not very tasty or unique at all. I left feeling quite underwhelmed. The menu is printed on the paper placemat and fills 2/3 of it at most. This place is BYOB by the way so forget the wine list. Started with half dozen oysters. 4 were good and 2 were putrid. The topping was diverse and not needed, it detracted not added. The soup based on coconut milk and chicken stock with chile oil was a very nice take on tom Kha gai. Tuna tartar was ok and the wagyu beef flank steak was less than an appetizer. The half tandoori chicken was a winner. Service was attentive. Excellent food! Everything we tried was very tasty and worth the $$. They started with these white crisps brushed with seasoning that was absolutely delicious. Our table shared the brussel sprouts and cauliflower beignets, both of which I loved. The pieces are very small (reminiscent of tapas!) and there are only 3-4 of them, so it's good to share. I had the vegetarian entree, which was not on the menu but the waiter mentioned it to me on the side. I will say that their entrees are not too veggie friendly (only a pasta dish and this platter), but they did have a lot of non-meat small dishes and snacks to share. The platter I got was very well seasoned and cooked - fresh veggies (mushrooms, asparagus) with potatoes (looks and tastes a lot better and complex than it sounds). For dessert we shared the brownie, which was the one dish I don't think was worth the $10 - pretty ordinary brownie with vanilla ice cream, with a chocolate foam that looked really cool but was more aesthetic than it was tasty (it honestly evaporated after a few bites anyways). Anyways, I do recommend at least one try! Compared to the other pricey restaurants around princeton, this place is worth a visit. read more

Returned after a week to eat at this place and what a disappointment ! We loved our first visit. The food was different , the consistency was not there, the taste was not the same as a week ago, including the service ! We ordered many of the same small plates. I do not like to think that the Labor Day holiday was a factor. Not sure if I will return, truly disappointed. read more

If you want to enjoy some great cocktails and unique starters, this is the place to go. Service may be a tad slow but they make up for it with the great shaken stuff!! read more
