We have a sweet and sour experience. The food was very delicious but the portions were very small and pricey. The waiter was very polite and very attentive but was also very pushing, try this, add that, I recommended this, etc. No problem, thank you for the advice but they have to pointed out that will cost you extra. For instant a classic mojito if you like with coconut it will cost you extra $2 dollars, Another example. I asked for more chimichurri (very tiny mini container) and t He had added another $2 dollars to my check. I don't mind paid extra for something you like but the point is the waiter (David) never mentioned this valuable information. Anyway, the food was delicious, attention excellent but the price don't much with the portion of the food and on top of that we have to paid a mandatory 18% for service. Like or dislike the service no matter is already added to the check and they still have the nerve to ask for additional tip. Last but least, they added another charge of 2.34% for using a credit card. Dining outside doesn't have to feel like you were ripped off. Been here before and service was great. Yesterday was a different story. Had a reservation for 730p for 2 people and in comments I requested a corner table. We arrive, only to be seated in the middle of the place. I again asked for a corner table. We were sat upstairs with the worst waitress. Veronica who was extremely rude. We actually came for happy hour and mentioned that as we walked in, but we weren't told that until we were seated that happy hour was only at the bar, one level above. By then, we were firmly ensconced in our window side seats, so we decided to just stay put. We decided to go for the "Plato Mixto", a hefty $26 sampler that came with two each of the following: Arepas, empanadas, chicharrones, chorizo, shrimp ceviche, tostones, maduros, papa rellena. I loved the shrimp ceviche - I could have and would have slurped up every bit of that golden spicy deliciousness. The chicarrones (fried pork belly) was also quite the delicacy, and nicely meaty without too much fat. Everything else was also quite good. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful, but the service needs ALOT of work. First I waited over 20 mins for a kids lemonade and an additional 30 min for food. However once I received the bill I was changed an extra $9 for steak, credit card fee, and gratuity fee (only 2 adults & 2 kids ages 1yr and 4yr). When I bought it to the manager's attention he tried to explain it is extra for steak... but that was not explained by the server nor stated on the menu (which is posted below). We came here for dinner this past weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday, overall the experience was good. We enjoyed our appetizers and entrees, the service was good, not great but good. We did order a half a pitcher of the sangria and instead of the waiter bring us a half pitcher he brought us 3 glass of sangria. He said a half pitcher was equal to 3 glasses and when we said well then just give us a whole pitcher he said that he could give us 3 more glasses which would equal a pitcher. At the time only 3 of the 5 there were drinking sangrias but we would have preferred to determine how we divide up our libation portions. Our number one brunch place in Philly. The restaurant is located in a lovely residential area in the 1200 block of Pine Street. Sidewalk seating is available in nice weather. Staff is friendly and helpful. Can get a bit noisy when full. I measured 80 dBs, not too loud for normal cross-table conversation We started our brunch as always with Mixto's great Bloody Marys. It being a Latin American restaurant, I suppose we should try the margaritas someday, but the bloodies are just too damn good to pass up. Pan-fried bread is brought to the table first, and should not be passed up. It is buttery and way better than toast. The brunch dishes are described by country, signifying a typical offering from that particular Latin American country. I had the Tostadas Rancheras (Mexico), fried tortillas topped with refried black beans, lettuce, two eggs any style, queso fresco and tomatillo sauce, served with chorizo and guacamole. Salsa on request is house made. B chose Gallo Pinto (Costa Rican), two eggs, white rice mixed with black beans, red and green peppers & scallions in a lizano sauce, served with fried cheese, avocado, sweet plantains and grilled chicken or choice of breakfast meat. Stayed in center city for the night and was looking for somewhere i haven't been before. I was in the mood for Latin food and the menu here seemed interesting enough so I thought I'd give it a shot. I haven't had a delicious hearty meal like this in a long time. The portions were also huge. Given the prices on the menu I thought it would be one of those cases where I'd be making a late night wawa run after getting hungry again, but we had enough leftovers for 2 more meals. We got the chicken empanadas, Maduro relleno, Ropa Vieja, and rice with shrimp. The Maduro relleno is something I will order without hesitation each time I go in the future. This giant plantain is sweet and caramelized on the outside and stuffed with delicious beef and cheese on the inside. This is almost a meal in itself and would be the one thing I'd recommend to everyone. The empanadas were perfectly cooked and the filling was moist and flavorful. The salsa served with it was fresh and spicy which was a nice contrast to the meatiness of the empanada. The Ropa Vieja is the ultimate hearty meal for anyone who likes stews. The meat truly does fall apart and you don't even need the rice. The vegetables and seasoning are on point and the whole dish is just the ultimate definition of comfort food. The shrimp with rice sounds simple, but the flavors were anything but. This dish is made with saphron rice, shrimp, olives, and smoked sausage. The olives and sausage bring a saltiness and smokiness to the dish where you don't need to add any kind of additional seasoning. I would definately get this again. I definiately want to go back and eat indoors once things settle down a bit more with covid because even though the food was delicious, I would love to see the dishes plated in their natural habitat. read more

Super bland, watery, and had a slimy texture like they came out of a can but there were a few beans that were still a little hard which makes me believe they were cooked fresh. This somehow makes it worse that they came out so bad. It's hard to mess up beans, and for a place that specializes in Latin American and Caribbean food I'd expect a staple like beans to be perfect. This was the first time in a while that I sat at the bar since cutting back on my drinking. What a disappointment. The bartenders and bar backs were unorganized and inefficient. They spent lots of time together at the register trying to figure out how to keep track of orders, and after messing up another party's receipts, a manager had to join them. Went to this amazing Mexican restaurant last night to celebrate my BFF's birthday. Oh my the YELP reviews were right this place is the spot for good dining in Philly. We were promptly seated (not bad for a Saturday night) and greeted by a pleasant hostess and wait staff. The inside is bright and lively with beautiful colors, sounds of traditional Spanish music was very inviting. The place was clean, the service was quick and the food was deliciously satisfying. I ordered the recommended scallops and they did not disappoint. I loved that it was on a bed of risotto mixed with asparagus,artichoke and mushrooms. The Birthday girl got the traditional ropa vieja with white rice and beans. My sisters got the PLATO MIXTO (appetizer platter) and grilled shrimp and yellow rice. The drinks were just ok and took FOREVER to arrive. We were seated at the coffee bar and while the two guys working at the coffee bar were very charming and friendly, they didn't seem to know a thing about the happy hour menu. Is there really such a high demand for coffee at 6pm such that they need to staff the bar with baristas instead of bar tenders or regular wait staff? IDK, the whole set up was very very strange. Also because the happy hour food portions were so small, by the time we were done, the cost of the bits and pieces of food added up to the cost of a normal meal, and I left hungry. I visited Mixto's during restaurant week and although it was really crowded, the front desk people still continued​ to be really pleasant and attentive. They consistently reassured us that we will have a table shortly. The ambience was very nice, their were two levels, nice hardwood floors and creative paintings on the walls. The waiter was friendly, she even accommodated​ our seats to something more comfortable because the seating can get pretty tight. I ordered the aroz con pollo and it was a little bland at first but definitely had to add seasonings to spruce it up. My drink was fantastic I had the coconut mojito! I love that they offer huge portions, so when coming to Mixto's definitely bring your appetite or be prepared to take some food home cause you will get your money's worth. We had a strange experience and likely won't go back. The food was good, but when we asked several times about ingredients in one dish we never got an answer. Instead the server wanted to take our order and when we said we hadn't gotten an answer on what was in the dish they adopted a serious attitude and slammed things around. They got friendlier when it was time to settle the check. And we were not told that 18% was already included for service. Plenty of kick and just the right balance of sweet and spice. My second drink had no fruit garnish which was a little disappointing given that was how I was getting the extra spices around the rim into the drink itself. Nevertheless I sipped away while dancing in my seat to the lively salsa playing in the background. The time comes to order and I ended up going with the Arroz con Camarones which came with a few maduros on top and a side of black beans. Overall it was just okay. I went to Mixto for brunch with a few girlfriends. They have a good balance of Latin American options as well as more traditional American choices for your picky eater. Prices seemed fair, especially on mimosas. They offer pitchers of sangria too I saw many tables splitting. We sat upstairs which was fairly empty around 11am but picked up a lot by noon. Service was typical and not noteworthy. I think the food was good but not great. I don't think any of us were particularly wow'ed with any of our choices, and more enjoyed the reasonable mimosa pricing.
