After discovering how awesome this particular Mitsuwa's food court is, it was just a matter of time before we came back to check out all of the different eateries here. Sadly, our first adventure to Gyutan Tsukasa ended up being a little underwhelming, but no matter - it's not like that one meal was indicative of how the others would go. Plus, just about every place here looked too good to resist! So, next up on the list, based on all of the positive reviews from Yelp friends, as well as the display case full of plastic models of their food - Miyabi-Tei! Compared to some of their neighbors, several of whom are centered around specific offerings (beef tongue, udon/tempura, ramen, etc.), Miyabi-Tei is more like your neighborhood Japanese restaurant that offers a little of everything (save for sushi rolls). Among their menu offerings, you'll find soba noodles, tempura, donburi options, katsu curry rice plates, hamburg steak, a variety of bento box options, and even a slate of rotating daily specials. -- SALT-GRILLED MACKEREL PLATE with Miso Soup, Potato Salad, and Rice Other than how I wish the piece of mackerel had been larger, this was great! The mackerel was moist, super flavorful, and not overly salty. I also thought the potato salad was pretty good while the rice and miso soup were perfectly fine. -- TEMPURA BOWL with Braised Pork, Miso Soup, and Salad Ordered this as a Tempura Bowl, but told them we didn't need the rice. All in all, the tempura was pretty solid - really crispy and it came with a good variety (I liked the fish best). That said, the Braised Pork was the star - super tender and straight up DELICIOUS! -- EEL EGG BOWL (Unadon) Maybe it's because I haven't had this in ages, but I thought this was terrific! The unagi was meaty and flavorful while the egg was still a bit wet (which was great). I also loved how the rice wasn't overcooked and that the cut of unagi was decently sizable. While all three dishes that we ordered were pretty good, I'll admit that they aren't all that unique/special. So, in that regard, nothing that we had at Miyabi-Tei is worth writing home about. However, for what it is and where/what they are (an eatery at a market food court), you really can't go wrong with coming here. With so many different entrees to choose from, there's a good chance you'll find something to satisfy whatever craving you might have and at reasonably budget friendly prices at that! THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.
Landed in SNA and Miyabi-Tei never disappoints as first stop for meal. The food is consistently good, the prices are great, and the portions are generous even with how expensive everything is these days. We usually order the chicken katsu curry with salad, and it's always a hit. The chicken is juicy and tender, and the curry sauce is rich and full of flavor. It's such a comforting and satisfying meal. I also tried the mackerel set, which comes with rice, salad, and miso soup, everything was well-prepared and really enjoyable. There can be a line when ordering, but it moves quickly, and the service is super efficient. We got our food within about 10 minutes, which is impressive. Definitely a go-to spot for a delicious and affordable meal!
Today's special was amazing! $13 for udon and rice combo? I saved it for two days because I'm a small eater. Worth the pricing! Delicious food for cheap pricing compared to outside. Will definitely come back for this. Service was fast. He took my order quickly and it took less than 10 minutes for him to call my number on the receipt for pickup. Its a food court setting so look and fight for your own seats! I LOVE the egg bowls they have. DELICIOUSSSSSSSS
Miyabi-Tei inside Mitsuwa Marketplace is great for a quick Japanese comfort-food meal. The Chicken Katsu Curry is filling, with crispy breaded chicken over rice and Japanese-style curry. It's a casual food-court setting.
I had to grab a quick lunch and went inside the mitsuwa food court. This food court will never disappoint you. From bottom to top quality. Cheap meal and pretty quick service. Today I had my pork katsu for $10 you can never go wrong with it! Fresh quick and tasty moist pork katsu and the curry sauce is amazing too this is one of my spot for a break time meals because it's close in south coast plaza malls. Remember this is inside the food court so it can get crowded and noisy but other than that its a delicious meal you can have here.
I am a HUGE fan of all things bento and have been eating this one for years. The price recently went up to $13.75, but it's still a great deal: salmon on top of cooked bean sprouts, a piece of chicken katsu on a bed of cabbage, rice, tsukemono (Japanese pickles), potato salad with seaweed and miso soup (not pictured). One big plus: they have a loyalty program, after so many meals you get one free. Cashier is always friendly. The only drawback is that the food court (where Miyabi-Tei is located) is extremely busy and sometimes it's hard to find a table, so get there early! There really isn't much of an ambience since it's in a food court (inside Mitsuwa).
Loving the presentation, but the food was pretty mid. I enjoyed the tempura, miso, and fish, but not anything else. The tuna had a fishy taste and did not taste fresh which was honestly expected. The lotus root/carrot mix in the bottom right tasted fine, but I noticed other reviews had chicken in it. I wonder if mine was mixing anything since I came near closing :(
I love this marketplace so much. I'm slowly trying to make my way around each little spot in the food court and today was Miyabi-Tei's turn. My goodness was service incredibly quick, and food was so good I couldn't even finish everything given how generous their portions really are. It's so refreshing to find a place that actually has affordable prices and you still manage to get full from what you order. It's a perfect spot to take family and try the many things on their menu. For us we had to get the chicken cutlet curry. That sauce was everything! Not too salty whatsoever and the tempura with soba noodles was just the right amount and packed with flavor. Will need to make sure to come try other items as the display window they have just makes everything look mouthwatering.
Friendly and fast service. Inexpensive but filling food. They have been around since the early 1980s for a reason. I wasn't expecting much when I decided to get some katsu curry from them. I didn't have good experience eating from Mitsuwa food court in the past. One very bad food poisoning several months ago had me feeling squeamish. And the nearby Dondon Tei was underwhelming in the past. Well, I am glad I decided to give Miyabi-Tei a try. The katsu curry came in good portions with nice amount of beni-shoga and crispy tender katsu. The curry itself was mild but delicious. Rice was fresh and not odd or old tasting. It was also less than $12 for a big platter. Definitely can't complain. The establishment doesn't take Amex. I will have to start carrying Visa on me whenever I try to buy things from Mitsuwa.
The number 41 bento box is a great deal at $14.50 and has a variety of food, both raw fish and cooked items. However, I didn't love all of the items. My favorites were the tempura, rice, and miso soup. They were all the correct temperature; however, the chicken/shitake/lotus was lukewarm and the chicken was quite dry. I also found the tuna to lack flavor, which is unsurprising given that it may not have been uber fresh (the unnatural bright red color was a giveaway). The grilled mackerel was served hot but I just don't love the naturally strong flavor of that species.
I got the chicken katsu curry. Portion size was great, however katsu itself wasn't very crispy. Really can't complain though for its price of under $10. The pickled radish on the side was also a good addition to balance out the curry. They also give you a lot of rice. The stand is located inside Mitsuwa Market. Orders come out quick and overall it's great value!
10/10 value! A well-rounded lunch is hard to come by, and a cheap well-rounded lunch is very hard to come by! I love coming here for lunch. The Miyabi Bento is perfect for those who want a little bit of everything and don't want leftovers. The tempura included green beans, eggplant, shrimp, and pumpkin. I need variety when it comes to meals, and this meal has several components for only $15! Soup, rice, grilled, fried, raw, vegetables, and fruit. I adore the simplicity. Food came out in 5 minutes and the food court at Mitsuwa is always a casual lively atmosphere to dine in.
$8.91 for a Katsudon and Udon Combo? Gettafuckouttaheya! If you aren't in the mood of waiting for Ramen, Miyabi-Tei is a perfect alternative. It took less than 5 minutes to get my meal! The Udon comes with two strips of bean curd, fish cake, and green onions. I've never been a huge fan of Udon as I never found a bowl I've enjoyed but the search may be over. Broth wasn't bland as I've experienced and I like how you can get a side of the fried tempura to add at your leisure so each bite is still crunchy. Only complaint? The spoon is waaaay to small. The Katsudon comes with very generous amount of Pork and the egg which it was cooked on top of had a few spots where the yolk was still runny. This, paired with the Katsu sauce, was perfection. Had the Pork Katsu Curry on my previous visit and even though Japanese Curry is my least favorite, I love how huge the portion size is. If you're short on time and money, Miyabi-Tei should be your first stop. You won't find another spot in Mitsuwa's Food court that is fast, budget friendly, and on top of that, delicious. read more

I feel like there are two stars of Mitsuwa that have been there for a while: Miyabi-Tei and Santouka Ramen. Miyabi Tei offers a wide variety of bowls, curry, bento boxes, soba...basically a lot of traditional Japanese types of dishes. I came here and I got their Bento Special. Which was around $8.95 or so. It was so beautiful. Five squares of delicious goodness, with tempura sauce on the side, a bowl of rice, and miso soup. The miso soup was pretty good, nothing too special but pretty solid. And then five squares of goodness... TEMPURA: nice and crispy. Every bite of it, I could hear the nice crunch. It was definitely really crispy and hot. Seriously fresh. This comes with tempura shrimp, pumpkin, two string beans, and eggplant. Yummy in my tummy. With the tempura sauce, it is amazing. Add some rice and you're good to go. SASHIMI: five generous pieces of tuna. Comes with a nice bed of radish that you can also dip into your soy sauce/wasabi with your tuna. So easy to bite into and heavenly. Fresh too! VEGETABLES: actually really delicious. It's like the vegetables you find in oden. The sauce they put the veggies in is really nice but gives it a nice flavor. I feel like it makes the vegetables easier to bite into and just tastes really good overall. I love my veggies! MACKEREL: oh yes. Give me that slab of fish. Comes with radish on the side with some lemons. Squirt some lemon juice onto the fish, eat it with the radish, all with the rice. Heavenly. So simple yet so good. ORANGES!: two slices of oranges. Yeah not too exciting, but hey, a nice and refreshing touch to end the meal with. Since it's right next to Mitsuwa, you can even grab of bottle of iced tea to fully complete your meal. Now that's what I'm talking about. I know that a lot of people like getting their curry here too, so that's something I would probably look into if I'm ever craving curry. VERY reasonable prices for the quality. I guess it's 'cause it's more of a food court type of deal, but hey, the food is better than a lot of Japanese restaurants. It's fast and cheap too. Looking for Miyabi-Tei? You won't spot them from the street. This little food establishment is located at the food court inside Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa. Bring cash cause they do not take cards! Order at the counter then wait for your name or number to be called. Food is A-OK. Portions were generous. Prices are very reasonable. Wife's Unagi Bowl was alright. My Katsudon looked yummy, but only tasted kind of good. Flavor wasn't quite there for both orders. Probably won't be returning here, but they are a good value for your money. read more

2.5 stars. I ordered the tonkatsu combination meal priced at $8.10. Having recently had tonkatsu in Japan at restaurants that cook and serve predominantly tonkatsu, I am now officially spoiled. The tonkatsu at Miyabi-tei does not compare. The tonkatsu pork meat was flavorless and dry. The outer dry crust was similar that of a fish stick out of a freezer. The tonkatsu sauce was not that great and, if good, is an integral part of the dish. The pickled vegetables, which are normally a side dish to tonkatsu, were not very good. The tonkatsu came with a side of shredded cabbage salad, rice, and miso soup. The salad dressing that they served to be placed upon the cabbage was not bad. The miso soup was not bad either. I have to say, however, that tonkatsu at restaurants in Japan that specialize in this dish start at twice the price of what Miyabi-tei charges. But, the tonkatsu in Japan is absolutely out of this world when it is good. I guess if you want a quick cheap tonkatsu fix, Miyabi-tei may be an alternative. Not for me though because I know what really good tonkatsu tastes like. read more
Miyabi-Tei is DAMN GOOD! It's obvious from the massive line they always have, it makes the other places (even though they are good in their own right) look weak!! I always say I'm going to try something "different" when going to Mitsuwa to eat, but once I see those delicious food displays behind that glass, I can't help myself!!! I always end up getting the Tempura Bowl because it is always on point!! The bowl itself puts you in a food coma, but it comes with miso (which is delicious) and a side dish of either tofu or pickles. I love it! It's a complete meal for only $6! You can't beat that!! Other delicious things you should try: 1)Cold soba noodle set with a side of Tempura - great for hot summer days! 2)Katsu curry - Check out their daily special. I was hoping to get some Santouka, but the line was crazy long. Right next door was this place, which looked like a good alternative, plus I haven't had Japanese curry for so long! Prices were very reasonable. For a huge platter of curry with a side salad, it was around $8 with tax. CASH ONLY though! The cashier was not very friendly, but got the job done. It is usually very crowded so good luck finding a seat. I got the katsu chicken, which was nice, crisp, and juicy. There was an ample amount of curry sauce to slather everything in, and it tasted a little like the boxed variety but it was good. The side salad was a good call because it was a welcome break from curry at times. It's normal iceberg lettuce, but I really enjoyed the dressing. This place was ehhh. Peter ordered the Chicken Katsu curry plate and I had the hot soba with uni don. My plate was okay. The hot soba was plain and chicken in the Uni don was mushy. I didn't finish my food.. It thought it would be a lot better. Peter's Chicken Katsu Curry was ok. Ebisu's Chicken Katsu Curry is MUCH MUCH better. I guess I had high expectations before eating here and left unsatisfied. read more

Mitsuwa's food court is pretty awesome- you obviously don't come here for fine dining, but it provides some solid options for a quick lunch. When I'm not feeling like Santouka (translation: the line is too long), Miyabi-Tei is the next best thing! Almost everything is under $10 and the portions are pretty big- you never finish the meal feeling hungry! I usually get either the unagi or tempura combo- along with your main item, you get a bowl of rice and either soba or udon. Sure it's a lot of carbs, but hey... Ok, I don't have a good explanation- I just think it tastes good and fills you up! Also, I'm a big fan of their iced green tea with milk - so refreshing! On busy days they run out pretty quickly, but if you're lucky enough to get there in time, I would definitely spring the extra few bucks for this delicious beverage! read more

I give this place 4.5 stars!!! I have been wanting to try food from the various vendors inside Mitsuwa Marketplace for a long while now, but always somehow end up here when I don't have cash. Many dishes to choose from for very reasonable prices. Service was efficient and quick, the food came out quick, even before we could find a clean table haha. My son and I split the combo meal-the rice bowl was filled with rice with a small chicken katsu and steamed egg-it is almost as if they read the kid's mind. I ate the udon and shared some of my friend's huge plate of curry with pork cutlet. My only complaint is the cheap plastic utensils-not conducive especially for eating any large soup bowl. But for the prices, I will not dwell too much on this. This food will definitely be on my mind for awhile-too bad I live so far away. All vendors in this food court appear to be cash only. read more

Authentic Japanese food stall specializing in katsu curries, soba, don, and and tempura. Located within Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa, this affordable eatery is the perfect place to get a quick, satisfying meal before you browse the Japanese grocery store (or any time). My boyfriend and I both got the Zaru (Cold) Soba with Tempura. The tempura includes a variety of vegetables as well as shrimp, so if you are vegetarian, ask for no shrimp. I handed the cashier two $20 bills, to which she sweetly exclaimed "too much"! The total for TWO soba/tempura combination meals was just $15. Our food was ready in about 10 minutes. The soba was fantastic. The fresh buckwheat noodles were perfectly cooked, fully absorbing the flavors of the deeply savory sauce when dipped. The dashi is multifaceted, packing a salty punch into every bite. The vegetable tempura had a flavorful breading that was slightly on the thick side, and included kabocha, string beans, and eggplant. Combined, the various textures and flavors of the food created a memorable lunch that was filling but not overly heavy. Cash only! read more

How could I not review a Japanese curry restaurant when I am a die hard Japanese curry lover? I use to say Hurry Curry was my favorite. Then I went to Curry House and fell in love. I told my bestfriend how much I loved Curry House and she was in shock and told me I HAD to try out this place. I thought to myself, "Seriously? This place is better than Curry House?" So she brings me to this place which is located in a Japanese market's (Mitsuwa) food court. The place is crowded and she leads me to Miyabi-Tei, which had the LONGEST line of all the food vendors. I thought to myself, "Wow, this place must be good." I order my traditional chicken katsu curry and lo and behold, $6. Yeah I said it, SIX DOLLARS ONLY! Then I thought, "What if $6 is a small plate?" We get our LARGE plates with crispy katsu chicken and a generous amount of curry sauce, side salad, and of course, warm rice. Oh, I still remember that sweet, delicious smell. There was so much on my plate that I couldn't finish it. It was so nice and sweet, just how I like it. Boy did I enjoy that meal. So if you're a Japanese curry lover, or interested in finding some delicious but cheap curry with a generous portion, Miyabi-Tei is the place to be. BTW.. CASH ONLY! read more

You can't go wrong here. Same two ladies that take your order and serve/call out your order have been there since Godzilla landed in Japan. It's definitely the most banging spot in the Mitsuwa dining area. Back when I use to go to UCI, my roommate and I would always stop here and grab lunch. The price is decent but the food is good and consistent. There's many selections and from most of my experience, they all have been good. Now, so many years later when I returned yesterday, the same two ladies are still there! If you come here between 12-1pm, be prepared to wait in line. It looks intimidating but it's fairly quick. The food doesn't take too long to be made either. Just wait for the lady to call out your number on your print out. Usually it's in order, so don't try to jump the gun when they're calling number 76 and you're number 90. Last thing you want to do is crowd the area where people are trying to get their food and condiments. Good things come to those who hate; you'll be chomping down on some good food soon enough. I never had an issue here, always been great. I sometimes wish I was still living in this area because I know I would stopping here for lunch a lot more often. Just a quick note, they have everything from: various rice bowls, curry, hot/cold soba noodles, unagi, fried tempura, etc. Okay, I'm hungry now. read more
A Katsu Curry place located inside Mitsuwa Super market food court. For the price, you can't beat it. $6.50 will get you a Pork Katsu plate. It's not out of this world awesome, but it gets the job done and it's definitely a notch or two above chain restaurants like Curry House. The cons? Eating katsu w/ a plastic spoon (no knives are given). Cutting the deep fried Katsu w/ a plastic spoon is very vexing. Why can't they give plastic knives? This totally ruins the experience here =\ TIPS: -Located inside Mitsuwa food court -Plastic utensils are given. It's a pain cutting pork katsu strips w/ a plastic spoon. -Cash only. read more

Short of a international flight to Tokyo, this is as authentic as it gets. Shoyu based broth goodness with non of the hectic commuter throngs.. Born and raised in HI, we always have a goto Ramen shop. Luckily we have a great one here in socal, tucked in a japanese grocer, with the associated poor drivers, its worth the risk of a fender bender to get that savory soup that is served piping hot daily read more

I've never noticed this place since we'd only go here for Santouka! But when I went I wasn't in the mood for ramen and decided to look around. I saw in their little window display delicious looking bento boxes, curry, soba noodles MMM. Then I saw the price for what I'd get!! SOLD. I ordered the curry with salad and hot soba noodles. It was only I think $6.75 without tax. My boyfriend who got Santouka paid about $8 for a small bowl the size of my soba noodles alone. He looked sad and jealous when I came around with my huge tray of food. I love soba noodles and Japanese curry, it's like comfort food for me that I grew up with so of course it was delicious. The little old lady there had a weak voice so it was a little hard to hear her but she was very nice. This is probably my go to spot now inside the little food court. read more

My go-to restaurant whenever I visit Mitsuwa's food court. I always order the pork curry katsu (4/5) with no salad for $6.95. The portion is big and definitely bang for your buck. The pork itself was bland though. Could definitely use some more seasoning before battering and frying. However, they do give you a pool of curry sauce. Mop those katsu pieces in it for maximum flavor! read more
