I have been going to Miz Zips since 1985. This time I was truly discounted It was Saturday morning several weeks ago. I was looking forward to a nice breakfast, but that is not what happened. First when I got there it was freezing inside. The heat was off/broken. Sat down took a long time to get my order in. Took forever to get my food. Just a simple breakfast, corn beef hash and eggs. What they brought me look like they made it last night. The corn beef was very dry and tasteless and the potatoes where cold, dry, and hard. I have had bad breakfast before but this was the top one for being bad. When I went to pay I was ask how was it and I told it like I described. They said sorry but that is all. I hope they get there act together this was one of the places that I always liked. read more

By the way...there are two listings for this cafe - I think the other one is spelled right :) An old favorite of mine from the way back days, and I still like to grab a lunch here when I visit Flagstaff. A full parking lot is a good sign that the locals love this place. This is the kind of place where they name menu items for old customers who "create" their own favorites. I often get the Zip Burger when I come here, though I tried the patty melt recently....yum! They have great pie too! Not gourmet, but a great "old school" cafe on Route 66. I had the country fried steak and it was amazing. It was very very good. The only thing about this restaurant that took me by surprise and is not allowing me to give it five stars is the fact that it is cash only. The signs that indicate that it's cash only are super small and not easily read. I had to drive down the road to the ATM which wasn't bank so I had to pay a fee after my breakfast - The cashier asked to hold something of mine in Lou of payment and I was not comfortable doing so and there was a little pushback on that. read more

We stopped for lunch. Don't get the burger or the fries. The lettuce ony burger was grated and going brown. Go for breakfast or if it's lunch, get a BLT (if the lettuce is whole) or a pastrami sandwich. The root beer float and chocolate milk shake were ok. Stopped in with my daughter while waiting for some vehicle repairs at Big O Tires across the tracks, boy was it a treat. This is the type place you see in movies about small, cozy, quaint towns. Everyone was friendly and inviting. The place was nearly empty (3:45pm) and we were free to sit wherever we like. There is a big sign on the front counter indicating CASH ONLY! This is an important note that shouldn't be overlooked because there is NOT an on-site ATM. No problem for us, we weren't planning on lingering for a full meal. We ordered a strawberry milkshake and it was DELICIOUS!! Real strawberries and perfectly blended ice cream. Also it was big enough for us to share and EACH have a full cup. We absolutely plan on returning with my better half for an actual meal. Can't believe I've driven past here for so long. Note: I'd give them 5 stars if there was at least a relatively close ATM. I love this place. It took me awhile to discover it, but now I'm a weekend regular for the most part. The prices are great, the people are fantastic. I always come for breakfast and order my usual: corned beef hash. I love it. The staff has taken the time to know my order and they get to know you as a person. One thing I enjoy is watching the staff interact with long-time patrons, asking about how the family is doing, how the job is going. That's what makes a local establishment so incredible. You know you are a regular when they know you don't need a menu and they asked how your mom enjoyed her birthday, or how your brother is doing. Great costumer service. My family has been going there for years. We went this past weekend and it wasn't too busy so we got in quickly. They are very traditional with their food and drinks so that makes it extremely simple when ordering. Example for coffee they don't have all of the latte or "fancy drinks" it's just good old fashioned coffee! (Which my husband loves). I order the bacon and eggs every time with a side of toast. Not What It Used To Be! I have frequented this restaurant for over 50 years. It was a cozy "local" cafe with friendly, dependable service and down home food. Today... NOT SO MUCH. I waited to be seated as the sign indicated. It was cold and snowing outside. It was around 10:30 a.m. and not very busy. The man who seated me asked if the booth right by the front door would be okay. I said, "no, could I sit in the lower dining area." (much warmer) He shrugged and said, "you can sit anywhere that is cleaned off." There was one booth cleaned so I asked if that would be okay. He said.. "If it's clean." The young lady that waited on me did not know about the breakfast special but she did go look on the info board by the front door and got the info. Service was slow but okay. Prices were high for what it is. Two pieces of french toast with a couple strawberries and a cup of coffee was over $16. The man who seated me was taking tickets with payments at the tables for customers but ignored me when I put my credit card out for payment. After sitting awhile, I proceed to the front of the restaurant for payment. Nothing earth shattering, just RUDE and no sense that I was welcome. Previous management was always so warm and inviting. For about a year now, Miz Zip's has been a running joke between Amy and me. Amy: What should we do for dinner? Me: Let's go to Miz Zip's! Amy: NO! Suffice it to say that her impression of the place was not particularly good, even though she had never actually eaten there. Still, the divey little local diner hung around in my mind until finally, on the way back from a walk around Sunset Crater the other night, we decided that we were too hungry to bother with cooking dinner. I announced that I wanted a burger, and when Amy accepted that suggestion, the implication was clear: "Let's go to Miz Zip's!" Since I'm not sure if I'll ever be allowed to go back, I figure I might as well take advantage of this opportunity to write a review. As it appears from the outside, Miz Zip's is nothing if not a divey little local diner. The menu is nothing fancy, and our charming waitress was happy to recommend the Zipburger as one of her favorites. Thus Amy and I both ordered Zipburgers with a salad and fries, which set us back a very reasonable $6.95 each. Our waters stayed filled, every staff member we interacted with was friendly, and our fellow diners seemed like a good salt-of-the-earth type crowd. The walls were covered with charming pictures and old aphorisms. So far, things seemed pretty much par for the course. Unfortunately, our actual meals were pretty lame. The Zipburgers were small, thin patties with lettuce and tomato on a bun with Thousand Island dressing. The salad was a small bowl of bagged iceberg mix with far too much dressing for the tiny portion. The fries were limp and under-salted. I would probably compare the overall execution to what one might find in a decently-run high school cafeteria. Of course, we weren't about to complain: we happily paid our miniscule tab (in cash -- no credit cards accepted) and headed home, thoroughly amused. Miz Zip's had delivered on my joke, after all, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that I'd actually recommend it to anyone looking for a meal. I have been here only a few times for breakfast, the most important meal of the day, and the most important thing for you to know before reading this review because I will never consider ordering anything but breakfast from this place, because their lunch and dinner menu just don't look appetizing to me. I ordered standard breakfast fare meaning that it was nothing that a person couldn't whip up in about 20 minutes, yet, it was tasty and my eggs were nice and fluffy, and the bacon was crispy and delicious which is how I like them. I did on another occasion order an omelet this last time which had chili on it, but the chili tasted like it was either frozen for a while or came from a can. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really too good either. As for the service, I have gotten a mixed bag. Sometimes the service was good, sometimes it was bad. It depended on the waitress, because of the three, only one was really nice and did a good job of refilling my coffee and asking me if I needed anything. Maybe it was the rush, but I did go at the same times on the same day and the rush was the same. I am sure it is stressful being a waitress but all the same, when my water has been empty for 10 minutes and I have to either flag down a waitress or walk over to the counter to get a refill of water, before my tongue shrivels up from the salt content of their chili, that is a sign of trouble. I likely will never go into this place again unless I have a friend who really wants to go, and if I really crave breakfast and am too tired or lazy to cook. read more

Up in Flag dropping the kids off at NAU and after a day of carrying furniture and boxes through chilly rain, we were starving. The neon green sign screaming "Let's Eat" beckoned us. Cutsy diner ambiance---lots of bric-and-brac and Coca-Cola collectibles and old advertisements. Two dining rooms---one with tables, the other lined with booths and a counter with stools in the center. We seated ourselves and a young woman came over within minutes and took our drink orders and provided menus. Pretty basic, limited diner menu---breakfast items, sandwiches, some salads and entrees. Almost everything was under $10 and most were under $8.00. And evidently the "Zipburger" is their specialty---the menu said they ground the meat themselves. DH ordered a Zipburger, DS a French Dip, DSGF a ham and cheese, and I ordered something---darn it, can't remember what it was called, but it was in the salad column and features greens and a green chile and onion stuffed patty. That was interesting enough that I had to order it. Let's get the Zipburgers out of the way----they are thin, tasteless burgers, but DH liked his---of course, he said it was so loaded with condiments---mustard, catsup, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese---that he didn't really taste the burger. He got a generous quantity of fries, fried very brown---they were actually nice and crispy, but the grease tasted old. DH also ordered a small side salad with oil and vinegar dressing. The lettuce was crisp, had some tomatoes but DH kept splashing at the puddle of water in the bottom of his bowl and saying: "Is this dressing? It doesn't have any taste. How can vinegar not have any taste?" DS's French Dip was again, generously size and he seemed to like it. He gobbled it right down, along with a side salad which he asked for lemon to dress it with. It came without the lemon, but he ate it anyway. DSGF's ham and cheese looked like something I'd make at home on my George Foreman and she got a side of fruit with it. This ended up being a bowl of canned pineapple slices and canned peaches. (However, I'd like to point out that in discussing it, she and I admitted we LIKED canned peaches---and face it, fresh pineapple with canned peaches would taste odd---so canned fruit all the way around was a good call. Thank goodness it wasn't fruit cocktail!) My meal was NOT interesting. It was an oval platter mounded with salad---crisp lettuce and pieces of tomato---and a Zipburger patty. The patty was stuffed with grilled green chiles and onions. But it had no flavor. No meat flavor, no chile flavor, no onion flavor, no seasoning. Thank goodness I got the blue cheese dressing----although out of a GFS container, it added some much needed flavor. Our server was a nice girl, fairly attentive but not interested. We could see into the grill area and as we ate, we watched a server and someone---the cook?---get into a food fight----glad we had our meals in front of us already! They advertised fresh fried donuts on the menu and we were thinking to order a few---C'mon---FRESH, FRIED donuts? Who could resist? But mid-way through our meal, our server came and dropped off the bill. Even if we weren't done, she was! Oh, and the dressing my husband kept asking about? There server did return one more time after she dropped off the bill. We were just finishing up. She was carrying a cruet set of oil and vinegar and she apologized and said she'd forgotten to bring his dressing. So that puddle in the bottom of his bowl was lettuce water, not some anonymous dressing. As he was pretty much was finished with his meal, we just said thanks and he kept munching on. They only accept cash---no credit or debit cards---a fact we failed to notice when we first came in, but since the bill came to a VERY REASONABLE $36 we had the cash. Seriously---when in the last year did we go to a restaurant and feed four hungry adults for an average of $9 each? It was filling, it was cheap, and the place was clean. Would I come back---probably not. But NAU students DS and DSGF were excited for those three reasons and they will be back. Your criteria for a meal is a bit different when you are nineteen and on a limited budget---I can remember those days. Actually, I think Miz Zips could do three things to make this a better dining experience---season their meat (because if they fresh grind it on premises, it deserves to be treated more respectfully), change their fry oil, and bring a little discipline to their servers. read more

He got the zip burger & I got the Country Fried-Steak. His burger was good, but wasn't delicious. My country fried-steak was horrible. It was soggy & had no flavor to it-- very bland. My meal also came with beans, mashed potatoes & a hot roll. The beans tasted like they came out of a can, nothing special. & the mashed potatoes weren't any special either, these items were something I could simply make at home. I was expecting something a little more unique. The hot roll was good, anybody can toast a roll & put butter on it though. Overall, we weren't really satisfied. You want a good burger you'll never forget? Go to Mama Burger. You want some good country fried-steak? Go to Denny's or Cracker Barrel. read more

Fellow diner's burger was very forgettable. Other's BBQ sandwich was just OK. If you order fruit as your side instead of fries (or other), it is canned - just so you know. Came here for my birthday breakfast the place is very very cozy inside lots of antiques and stuff on the wall lots and lots of History very clean no sign but you need to see yourself they only take cash which is little inconvenient but we had cash anyways the prices were very reasonable the food was really really good nobody had any complaints it was 5 of us they didn't really have a boot to accommodate us but we made it work they have tables that can seat larger groups it's located right off Route 66 which is kind of cool was very friendly and very good service I recommend eating here to anybody I would definitely come back and eat here again next time I come through Flagstaff read more

We were in Flagstaff for the day and decided to yelp a place to eat. After reading some of the reviews on Miz Zips, we decided we'd give it a shot. Nothing fancy just your nostalgic diner type food. One of the reviewers complained that the fries appeared to be cooked and then re-cook and said that they were gross. The french fries there are actually made from fresh potatoes something that that complainer was probably not used to. They are used to the processed garbage that you get in most of the fast food restaurants. As I said, the food is not fancy, just simple cafe/diner type food. My only "gripe" would be that they only take cash or checks written on an Arizona bank. I had to find a local ATM to get the cash to pay for the meal. read more

Came here on a Saturday night and was promptly seated. I ordered the roast beef dinner and my girlfriend ordered the zip burger. I was surprised how bland my dinner was after reading all the positive reviews on yelp. The roast beef was flavorless. I ordered a diet coke,which I had drank by mid meal. I was never asked if I wanted a refill or how our meal was going. My gf burger was over cooked and the bun was stale. The only saving grace for this dump was the apple pie. It was very tasty or else this place wouldn't even be worth a star. If you're a tourist in town I'd skip this joint. Our bill came out to 35 dollars for two crappy meals.
