Cute and quirky spot for a flagstaff brunch. The owl decor is all for sale, which is so much fun. The food is pretty standard brunch food, but their green chili is sooooo good (don't skip out on this but beware, it is spicy). Their cinnamon roll is soft and sweet. Service can be spotty. When we went, we sat at our table for over 20 minutes before someone even came over to say hi. HOWEVER, once we alerted someone, they expedited our food and were super apologetic. The vegan bacon tasted a little funky, and I've been vegan for almost 10 years so I'm aware of what it's supposed to taste like. Everything else on my plate was delicious. As for the chilaquiles, my husband couldn't eat more than 1/3 of it. It was made incorrectly and very mushy. The staff just said sorry and made us pay for it, which is fine, but didn't offer to sub or deduct the cost? The food was good. My issue is with the restaurant's billing practices. Customers generally tip a percentage of the check to compensate their server. I normally tip 20-25% for typical service and more when the service is exceptional. What customers are not clearly told is that Flagstaff requires the restaurant to pay its employees the applicable minimum wage. I have no problem with the employees being paid that wage. What I do have a problem with is this: the menu lists the food at one price, and then the restaurant adds a mandatory 7% "Flagstaff Service" fee to the bill to offset the cost of paying that required wage. So, after the mandatory 7% fee and my customary 25% tip, I effectively paid an additional 32% above the menu prices. I would have tipped our server regardless. Servers work hard, and good service deserves recognition. But customers should be told clearly and upfront about mandatory additional charges so they can make an informed decision about both the actual cost of the meal and the gratuity they choose to leave. We were visiting Flagstaff on vacation, so this probably won't affect me again. But future customers may want to know about the additional charge before they order. read more

This is a quirky place with very good food! They have both indoor and a great patio seating. They offer a large menu of both breakfast and lunch options. We enjoyed both the grilled cheese sandwich and the grilled veggie wrap. Both were served fresh and flavorful, with very good fries. The service is friendly, but, can be a little slow when they are really busy, but, worth it. We will definitely return to try other selections on their menu. read more

I had quick service, found a hair in my food, and the staff apologized sincerely for the occurrence and got me a new plate of food expeditiously. The food was excellent and came in big portions. I had the Owls nest, healthy veggies with a kick to it! I'd highly recommend, and I had a coffee that was average but great! The restaurant is beautiful. The toasted owl and their ode to Owls is felt from the design of their restaurant, to their merch, cups, bathrooms all of it. We came as a group of four girls on a busy Saturday afternoon and waited a short while before getting seated at their community table inside with a few other folks. We ordered french toast to share for starters and were told that there would be a $3 per plate charge for us to get plates to split it. When we told them we each planned to order our own meals as well, they forwent (that's a fun word I rarely use...) the extra charge which we appreciated. The french toast ended up being our least favorite part of the meal. It was somewhat hard and lacked flavor. I prefer soggy custard-like french toast. The toasted owl is a fun, quirky restaurant that should definitely be checked out! The restaurant has a lively atmosphere and attentive servers. If you do get a little claustrophobic or overwhelmed with noise, I would recommend coming a little later (it slowed down around 1:30pm on a sunday). The theme for the restaurant is owls, and they do not let you forget! Everything in the café is for sale, so if you fall in love with something on the wall just let your server know! My party of 3 sat at the bar due to how busy it was, and we didn't feel forgotten by our server... which tends to happen when you sit at the bar at other places. She was extremely nice and our drinks and food were brought out promptly. I ordered a ruben with pastrami. The pastrami was delicious, it wasn't too salty or greasy. The ratio of saurkraut, dressing, cheese, pastrami, and bread was perfect and the sandwhich didn't feel heavy. The other people in my party ordered a BLAT and a BBQ Western Burger. They both loved their food as well and had absoloutly no complaints. The lunch entrees come with a side of fries and they were fantastic, I would come back just for their fries. I would definitely check out this restaurant next time you are in flagstaff so that you can enjoy their unique vibe and great food! Although we ended up having a great experience, I wanted to mention the horrible experience we had with the hostess. My party of 3 (women) walked in and were followed by a party of 5. The hostess made eye contact with us and then promptly ignored us 3 and turned automatically to the man in the party of 5 behind us and asked how many he had in his party in order to put them on the waitlist. He said 5 and even signaled who was in his party (not us). Even though it was a little rude of the hostess and a bit frustrating for her to just skip over us, we would have just ignored it and gotten over it.... except, the other woman at the desk realized what happened and in order to "make things right" she tried to put us on the waitlist. The hostess overheard her and rudely snapped at her, the poor woman then just apologized to us and said that the other girl was the hostess and could help us in a minute. The other woman reacted as if this was something that is a common occurance with this hostess. As soon as the hostess was done with putting the party of 5 on the list, she turned to us. I was the one who spoke with her and had her add us to the waitlist. She was still beyond rude, she was rolling her eyes persistently at me and had a not so friendly tone...it almost was like she had an extremely personal issue with my party? When I was giving her my phone number for the waitlist she had me repeat it about 10 times, I had pronounced the numbers extremely clearly, slowly, and loud enough to be heard each time. She added us to the waitlist and told us how long the wait was and then physically gave the hand signal to shoo us off. We stepped outside to wait for our table and were about to have the "what the heck just happened conversation" when in less than minute, a different staff member who was around the hostess desk when we checked in came out and asked if we would be okay with sitting at the bar. She was extremely nice and our experience went up from there. I wanted to mention this because the hostess is the face of the restaurant, she is the first person that anyone interacts with when they walk in those doors and she sets the tone for their experience. If this is how she normally acts, which given the reaction of her coworker seems likely, then she shouldn't be a hostess at all. The only reason why we didn't leave was because one of our party members use to live in Flagstaff and had been here multiple times. Anyone who has never been to the Toasted Owl, probably would have left and missed this experience. I had an extremely hard time deciding on how many stars to give this review, I am still giving The Toasted Owl Cafe a 5 star review because I don't think that the other staff members or any other part of my experience deserves any less... but if I were to rate only off of the first impression we got, which was the hostess. We enjoyed our breakfast. We got seated indoors right away (12:30 on a Friday). Turns out though that a group of six young women were seated behind us and their conversation was lively. We asked to move closer to the front door area. It was much better. And no shade to the young women, they were just catching up and having fun. Plus, the acoustics indoors is quite live. Our server Kayce B was super nice. She brought us waters and coffees right away. We'd already looked at reviews and knew we were splitting a Giant Cinnamon Roll and Breakfast Tacos with Roasted Potatoes. We placed our order and the Giant Cinnamon Roll came out right away. It was sweet and tasty but it was not giant (see pic). Eat the cinnamon roll as soon as it's placed as it turns hard after about 10 minutes. The meal came soon after. It was a lot of food and we're happy we split it. We had scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, ham and ham in our taco. They were served hot and with a cup of salsa on the side. The tacos were real tasty. The roasted potatoes were amazing. So happy they were oven roasted and not deep fried. They were perfectly cooked. Nice and creamy inside and seasoned well too. We have no plans to return to Flagstaff (been here a few times) but we recommend you give The Toasted Owl a try. read more

Leaving a less than stellar review is never my go to. However, if the owners see it, I hope they improve because this place shows potential. So here goes some honest feedback... To start, they seated our party of three at an 8-top when there was a 4-top available...which was odd. We asked to be moved to a smaller table and they were kind enough to move us. We fixed the wobble at the new table with a folded napkin and were in business. Service after we were moved to a new table (a 6-top, though 4-top was still available) went down. Food came out lukewarm which was disappointing. Would've tasted great if it was hot. I usually have more patience with this when a restaurant is busy. It was not. Maybe it was the servers first day on the job? While decor is meant to be rustic and outdoor feeling, it felt more on the dingy side. This place needs to amp up their overall game if they want to survive. Between the mediocre service, cost of food, and dingy atmosphere the $86 price tag for 3 people isn't worth me visiting again. Again, there's potential. Overall though waaaaayy too expensive! People come to these places for ambiance, excellent food, and amazing service. It helps them overlook the price tag. I call it the "dive trifecta". Check prices before you go, because if they are still over $10 a plate you are better off at Denny's or IHOP. read more

We were sorely disappointed with our visit this afternoon. There was only paid parking which took some time to pay since the street computer was working slow. We asked to sit in their large outside patio with large umbrellas but were told no because it was raining earlier and if we changed our mind, we couldn't be seated inside. There were about 7 tables seated outside. The last time I was at Toasted Owl was lunch on my birthday. At that time their menu was great. They had a plant based menu which was extensive and seemed to prioritize Non GMO, Organic, local ingredients. I ordered avocado toast that was over $20. The bread was thin and cheap. The avocado had no seasoning. Also ordered was a vegetable omelette, but I did not personally eat it. The vegetables looked old and not appetizing. There was next to no speaking from the waiter. When he brought the "check" he laid the credit card machine on our table and left. We paid the machine and left without any greeting from anyone. We were also charged a 7% fee that we had no idea what it was for. This is no longer the cute and unique restaurant we remember it as, but a low quality, overpriced mediocre at best cafe. They ration out the syrup in tiny cups so you have to ask for more. The omelete with cheese did not taste like real eggs and were fluffed up with some extender. My wife and I ate here for the first time on Sunday, October 26th. Long lines to get in, long lines to use the one operable restroom. But the waits were worth it. What a kick (or should that be a "hoot"?). Friendly staff, excellent service by Leilani, superb food, and the tchotchke (ambiance) is out of this world. I am sorry that we do not live anywhere near here because we would be regulars. Highly recommended.
