I made a mistake when I came to Mizuna. I didn't make a reservation. I didn't think it would be a problem since it was a weekday night in December at 4:45. Apparently I was wrong. After making us wait despite not being visibly full we were seated at the bar. The place was, even at 445 pretty busy, although i did notice that a table right by the bar was empty when we arrived and still empty when we left - and when we walked by 35 minutes later. Ok so that was the bad part, and really that isn't that bad. I had the golden beet risotto with goat cheese. I never considered such a dish, but now it is in my regular home cooking rotation. It was incredible, creamy perfection. Risotto done right. My wife had scallops. They where pricey but she hasn't had better since we were on the coast, and even then it was close. The sauces, an important piece of fine cuisine, were tasty and balanced. If only dinner for two wasn't 60+ bucks I would eat here regularly. read more

Saturday afternoon fare at Mizuna was not so great. Kobe burger was grossly undercooked. Wait staff and owner stated that undercooking ground beef was their policy/standard. The fix was to take my partially eaten burger back into the kitchen for additional cooking, instead of cooking a new Kobe burger to my requested cooking temperature. Needless to say, I did not finish my meal and I am e. Coli free! I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Mizuna understands modern dining: a menu not only for omnivores but a separate one for veg*ns. +1 for assuaging my fears and assuring veg*n diners that separate grills are used during food preparation. The menu is not standard veg*n fare of pasta with salad. Far from it. I started with a vegan herbed cauliflower soup (loved!) and enjoyed the vegetarian special of the evening: mushroom and scallion fritters (that were okay) atop a bean gratin (OMG LOVE) and served with an heirloom tomato salad (fabulous). I would return to Mizuna any day of the week for that soup and/or bean gratin, and I'd gladly return to sample the rest of the veg*n menu. Our server was an absolute delight. She was ebullient and attentive. More importantly, she wasn't there unless we needed her. I always appreciate excellent service like that. Quite possibly the best restaurant in Spokane. Delightful atmosphere - brick walls, wood floors, fresh flowers and the perfect lighting for unmatched ambiance. Perfectly prepared food - We were humming and ohhing and ahhhing as we tasted our food. That doesn't happen too often. Great service - Personable, efficient and REAL. Drinks - mixed, muddled or stirred to perfection. One of the only places that knows how to make a mojito (without shortcuts) and the Iced Wine martini was the perfect finale to a delightful experience. I had an unfortunate dining experience at Mizuna this evening while out with my wife. I'll start out with the good and move to the unfortunate. Good: Our waitress, Jordan, was just fine. She was knowledgable, swift, attentive, and made no excuses when I expressed my displeasure with both of my attempts at having a meal. I really appreciated that. The soup, a carrot and ginger puree, was spiced perfectly and delicious. In fact, it was the best part of the meal. The restaurant didn't gripe or show an attitude after my return of two meals. I was appreciative about that. Unfortunate: My food was just not good, simply put. I began by ordering a lamb belly entree with cornbread and vegetables. It was brutally salty when it arrived. I took three bites to ensure it was the meal and not something else and then asked my wife to try it. She as well confirmed that the lamb was way to salty. I asked the waitress to please return it, and she dutifully and politely did so after apologizing. I then ordered a bone in pork chop with polenta and asparagus. Naturally I had to wait about 15 minutes for the food to be prepped, which I was fine with of course. When the pork chop came out, I tried two bites and offered a bite to my wife to see what her take on it was. I could tell by the soured look on her face that she as well tasted the very salty taste in this second meal as I did. When the waitress came by to check up on me I informed her that it was to salty again and that I was done with dinner for the evening. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. End result: I will definitely not return here. After we spent $75.00 approximately on dinner, which only barely provided one for my wife that was tolerable at best for her, I can't say that this restaurant appears to be competing well for dollars. It let's a couple who are perfectly fine with spending a reasonable amount of money at a restaurant walk away with not much thought at returning. I've been going to this restaurant since they opened many years ago. Truly has been one of my favorite places. And yet, three stars. First the positives: good location and best atmosphere in town from soft gorgeous lighting, cute bar, tables (tall and short) and good chairs. No TV is just such a plus! Art and music are nice and quality napkins as well. :) Patio seating is awesome: "cozy" with the bricks, twinkle lights and plants, and still you're able to people watch, too, if you want. Service is professional & friendly. I've *never* had bad service. I'd tweak the wine list a bit but overall that's good, too. The main thing that has garnered the three stars and the thing I've watched consistently go downhill is the quality and presentation of their food. Ingredients no longer seem top quality. I come here for lunch (as well as dinner) and usually get the vegan soup and salad. Soup is hit and miss. When it's on, great. But often it's basic without much pizazz or innovation. Usually over-spiced. Salad is probably Costco's greens mix--which would be fine--except the sous (or other chef) sends it out without checking through it and the last THREE times, I've had to pick out all the slimy pieces, which were many. Of course, my boyfriend asked me why I didn't sent it back. Yes, good point. Still, three times is not a fluke. There's some whole grain/partial whole grain options like the flat bread but the regular bread that is partial is just dreadful. Surely there's better options all around out there. Entrees for vegetarians used to shine in the this place especially when Tanya was owner/chef. Now, it's often a heavy, and again an over-spiced dish with little nuance. I think there are two dishes served with field roast (not made in house); I could buy the whole loaf down the street at Main St. Market. I don't think I've ever seen a tempeh dish offered--which, for instance is great for mexican/spanish fare. Tempeh is healthy and offers variety from plain tofu and like tofu there's so much one can do with it. Almost no ethnic playing with food goes on at Mizuna and most dishes are cut from the same cloth. It's as if the vegetarian meals are afterthoughts and yet Mizuna was known for this. [They do separate their grills, BTW, so meat is not cooked with veggie meals.] Presentation that I've seen with my friends' choices and myself is boring at best. There was one dish that I used to order for lunch--no longer there, and an ethnic choice--veggie gyros. Just awesome from the whole grain yet light "flat-bread" underneath, the sauce and presentation--simple, yet varied in texture and color. Overall, I'll still go to Mizuna though much less. I think this place has been steadily sliding for a couple of years. Best option is to get a new chef--one who most importantly understands vegetarian/vegan options and who really like to take risks, caters to a variety of tastes (not just the heavy duty palate), loves food and tinkers with presentation. Then, up the quality of food, checking for freshness of all products before they're cooked or goes to the table. They've got all the other components down. I'd hate to see it fail. read more

Huge potential for this place, but not to my liking. Both entrees were extremely rich--they would be great as small plate apps, but, as served, it was like eating a stick of butter with cream on top. They initially tasted fine and were well-plated, but we couldn't finish them because of the richness. Would suggest the chef cuts down on the cream, tighten the portions, or add more roughage to the dishes to smooth the taste. Happy that (after asking twice and being initially denied) the place allowed our dog on the patio. The outside seating area was large and open. Since it was off the main street, it was quiet with no foot traffic. Love the veg, vegan, or meat concept, but cannot recommend as long as dishes are prepared in such an overwhelming manner. Bland bland bland...and over-priced. That describes Mizuna. I am not vegetarian but not a huge meat-eater either so after hearing rave reviews of this restaurant I gave it a try. The food is tasteless...I could not tell what I was eating and it was just bland....and oily. The bread should be served with olive oil to dip it in...not vinegar like Mizuna offers. The drinks were way too strong. The food was so terrible that my friend suggested we just leave it (Write it off as a huge FAIL) and go to another restaurant, which we did. The restaurant was a huge disappointment and if this is the best Spokane has to offer when it comes to veggie eating...I pity the people who are strict veggies who go here. You will actualy recieve 2 menus, one for meat and one for vegetarians. Always a plus to have more otpions for your customers. Me being the opportunist, i went veggie. You just don't get 2 separate menus like this at every restaurant and i had to try a veggie entree. I had the southern veggie plate with polenta,mmm!!! Fresh collard greens were amazing, mmmmm!!!!!!!!!!! Service was perfect, friendly and attentive. Seems like there were a few regulars in, you can always tell a restaurants service from the conversations regulars and servers have. If you have seen Gran Torino, remember that scene where Clint Eastwood and his barber shoot the breeze, something like that but a little less profane. Full bar and the wine menu looked great. Outstanding! This place did not disappoint. My dear friend and I came to Spokane for a weekend getaway and were searching for somewhere special to eat. After reading numerous reviews, this place seemed right up our alley. So glad we made reservations. They were able to squeeze us in during an extremely busy weekend. I was impressed that they had two separate menus. One for Vegetarians and one for carnivores. Both looked equally amazing and were filled with whatever was in season, fresh and local. Very easy to share, but hard to make decisions. They also had a great wine, beer and cocktail list. We started to get disappointed after having waited over 20 minutes after being sat with no service, but our lovely server (who was running her butt off) offered us a starter on the house without our mentioning the wait. I quickly forgot about my wait and thoroughly enjoyed their clams with pork belly. Good save server! We followed with the beet salad. Everything in the salad was amazing, but I loved their greens the most out of the whole salad. We then shared the salmon with fresh grilled asparagus and a potato mash, that she thoughtfully had pre split for us to enjoy. I was bummed I didn't have room for dessert because all their options looked incredible. Their bathrooms were easy to find, clean and I like when the stalls are more like a closet. Privacy is nice. I must point out that during the whole evening which was ridiculously busy, I noticed one gal with short hair and a tattoo across the bridge of her nose that worked harder than anyone I saw there! She kept the place watered, clean and running like a well oiled machine. At the end of our service, she called a cab for us to get back to our hotel and all the servers acknowledged us and thanked us for coming as we left. We will definitely visit here next time we come into town, but will make reservations a bit more in advance. The staff was all friendly, worked hard and were super easy on the eyes. During a recent "mom and daughter" night out that included dinner at Mizuna and viewing "The Hunger Games" - we had a chance to experience Mizuna's for the first time. First, the Yelp reviews recommending their artisan cheese plate was dead-on great - thank you. We loved this and we both agreed it was a special treat - the figs, honey, almonds, cheese, crackers - all of it was perfectly arranged, delicious and wonderfuly paired. I realized, I much prefer this type of appetizer vs other items I'm used to ordering. Dinner - I enjoyed my seafood bouillaisse - plenty of seafood, nice flavor and well made. However my daughter who periodically decides she's vegetarian, was in the mood for vegan that night and ordered off their veggie/vegan menu. She was disappointed with her choice of "winter stew" - Didn't care for the flavors or the textures - though did like the squash portions. Mind you, 90% of the time she is a carnivor - so she's not an expert on vegan foods - could be she just doesn't know "good vegan" regardless, it didn't taste good. I'm not sure if her disappointing entree experience was due to her NOT typically being vegan (does that even make sense???!!) or if it just wasn't a great entree. Will I go back and try it again - yes. Would I recommend it? Yes - a nice atmosphere, very friendly service, great location down town too, if you're looking for 'dinner and movie'. read more

The space is big, gorgeous, and welcoming with its exposed brick walls, warm lighting, and big windows.Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive. I was blown away by Mizuna and its plethora of vegetarian offerings. While Mizuna has plenty of choices for the meat-eaters among us, it pays equal attention to us veg-heads, providing a separate menu with just as many options. Hands down, the gnocchi I had here was the best I've ever eaten. I thought I had eaten perfect gnocchi before, but Mizuna upped the ante beyond mere perfection into the ranks of uber-perfection. The texture was perfect and cloud-like. Also notable were the arancinis served with a walnut pesto. Being the scavenger/raccoon that I am, I stole nibbles from everyone else's plates and am confident that there's no wrong choice you can make off that vegetarian menu. I also appreciated the wine list which featured bottles/glasses from regions as near as Walla Walla and as far as Burgundy. Equally thoughtful was the range in bottle prices from affordable to splurge. I settled on an affordable bottle of cab sauv from Walla Walla and was not disappointed. Talk about an AWESOME experience! The service here was like nothing I have seen before. They actually remembered my food allergies from our first visit even though we had a different server! We went a total of 3 X's while we were at our CSI convention... the Lamb was soo good my husband had it every time we went. I tried several dishes, the chef was amazing! The flavors, the textures... every combination was well thought out. The servers were very good a pairing the wine to your courses. We left feeling like we have friends for life. The unique menu and the superb quality of both the regular and vegetarian options are the highlights of this place. The downside is that you will leave very hungry and with an empty wallet. DISCLAIMER--Not for college students on a budget. I took my girlfriend here as Yelp said the price is only $$. Upon arriving we were seated at a very nice table with a very gracious waitress. Unfortunately after ordering a wine, we stopped short after looking at the menu. There is a "first dish" section with an average price of $14, then a salad section with an average of $10, then finally an "entre" section with an average price of $30. So for the date it would have been $130+ including the wine. We ended up paying for the wine and leaving. The waitress came by about every two minutes asking if we were ready, and the wine was delicious. If we were ready to spend $130 on a dinner I am sure it would have been amazing, however that was about as much as the two days in our hotel. If you have the money go for it. When we graduate college and make real money I will be sure to take my girlfriend back and treat her. But for now it the Satellite diner, and music! read more

This is one of the main reasons I miss Spokane (sometimes). Mizuna is one of few Spokane restaurants that prides itself on healthy, fresh, local ingredients. I've been here more times than I can count and I have tried almost everything on the menu. All I can say is mmmmmmmmmm, this place is delicious. The ambiance is lovely - brick walls, wood floor, candles and fresh flowers everywhere, and of course live music (every night?). The dining experience goes a little like this: 1) you sit down and look around "hmm nice cozy interior" 2) waiter/waitress arrives "hmm this waiter is weird" 3) menu "nothing on this menu looks amazing, but i guess i'll try something" 4) food arrives "this tastes weird" 5) two bites into meal "this is incredible!" 6) on the way out the door "i MUST come back" As many times as I've been here I go through this cycle EVERY time. So be prepared to be afraid on your first bite. But also be prepared to enjoy a scrumptious meal! read more

Vegans rejoice! A beautiful restaurant with outdoor seating that understands the way we eat. They'll make any dish vegan on request. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich minus the bread and cheese. They brought it served on a bed of greens. It was cooked to perfection, with a smoky sauce on top. The veggie soup was a magical combination of flavors, yet still light and refreshing. Hubby had the field roast, which was wheat gluten. Wow. Seasoned beautifully, packed with greens in pita bread drizzled with tahini. He is picky and was very pleased. Our omnivorous son liked his chicken sandwich so much, he ordered a second one to go! Less than a mile from I-90, so an easy stop when traveling. I had a delightful lunch at Mizuna. I ordered a chicken wrap with a side salad and asked that they just put the contents of the wrap on top of the side salad instead of eating the wrap. They did this without batting an eye, which I appreciated. We stopped in Spokane for lunch on our way to Glacier and when I checked Yelp this is the first place that came up to eat at. We stepped in and they had one of those curtain deals in the entrance that I don't understand and we led to a table in the bar area on the right. A bit noisy as they appeared to be cramming people into the section and where all the drinkers were located. Service was very friendly and good. I don't think my glass ever got empty and the timing was about as good as one could expect. Started off with the hummus place which was tasty and the mushrooms that came with it were very good. Next I had the potato pork soup which was just kind meh. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good and I wouldn't order it again. For the main course we split gnocchi which the kitchen split into two plates for us and was more than enough food. In fact we were so full that we decided to skip dessert even though the menu looked amazing. If we are ever back in Spokane we'll be stopping in, but requesting to sit on the other side where it seemed quieter. read more

I went looking for a vegetarian restaurant advertised on Yelp, but it wasn't open. On the road I pulled up Mizuna's on Yelp and headed on over. Ambience: Hip, clean, casually romantic Service: Amazing... I ate at the bar, and the bartender was informative, unrushed and new the selections well. Food: I chose off the Vegetarian Menu (Thank you!) and had a hard time, as many vege's do in picking an entree. Gosh if they give us more than 2 choices we take all night to chose. I picked the tofu salad (1/2 portion is huge!) and the vegetarian eggplant and mushroom meatballs with pasta. The salad was one of the best I've had in a long time. It was Asian influenced and included ginger dressing and pickled ginger amongst tender spinach. I can't love this salad enough!! The "meatballs" were so tasty. I'm not a big fan of eggplant, but couldn't even tell you it was in there. Fried up and soft on the inside. YUM! The funny part is that I was starving when I came in and couldn't finish dinner. The food was that satisifying. Pricing: Higher end, but I'm not surprised in a metropolitan city. Portion sizes were ridiculously large, so it was worth the money. Food isn't bad. Generally overpriced for what you get though. For what they are paying, I'm expecting high quality execution, thoughtful plating, and quality flavor profiles. I didn't get that. I did get something better than 90% of the places in the region though. Of note, when we were there we got to see the type of people this place receives, and that really colored my opinion of the place. We watched a server take a bill over to a table of younger folks, one of them takes his credit card out and as soon as the server turns around, slides it down her ass. She handled it like a pro, but the manager never swung by to kick them out, or even discuss why that's not appropriate. Won't be back. Activity like that needs to be controlled. read more

The ambiance has a polished rustic warehouse feel. The bare brick walls are a great touch as are the votives on each table. The perfect place for a date or relaxing dinner after a long day at the office. The hostess was warm and polite. Waitress attended to my needs expeditiously. My meal started with a wonderful glass of Pinot which was lovely pairing for the duck that I ordered for my entree. Sliced Sourdough bread was served with a wonderful infused olive oil. I asked for balsamic to pair with the olive oil. Unfortunately, imitation cheap balsamic was presented and true balsamic was not available. As most "foodies" would know, balsamic is aged and pours with the consistency of maple syrup. The duck entree was beautifully presented with wild rice, pecans, and carrots. The edge of the plate had the pecans and honey. The honey overwhelmed the wonderfully prepared duck, so skipped it the rest of the meal. The chef scored high marks for the flavor and temperature of the duck. For dessert I ordered a creme brûlée. The caramelization of the sugar was perfect. Disappointingly the creme was disastrous. It had the consistency of bread pudding. Don't get me wrong, I love bread pudding but when I order creme brûlée, I expect creme brûlée. When I let the waitress know about the problem, an alternative wasn't offered or an apology. That was disappointing. Over all I had a very nice experience. I definitely recommend it and believe they will improve with time. I hope the creme brûlée is improved drastically and I hope they start keeping a bottle of authentic balsamic for those of us with a more discerning palate. read more

Delicious. Absolutely fantastic. My family stopped here on a day and 1/2 trip through Spokane. This restaurant was recommended to us by a boat load of people, and they were right. The service was prompt and friendly, and even took the jokes of my (sometimes awkward and obnoxious) father with class and dignity. They kept our water glasses full and our other drinks full as well. The food was fresh. The salad was crisp and the ahi tuna sandwich I had was one of the best I've ever tasted. Everyone sang the praises of the food they had. My little sister's child-sized pizza was also something of note. The sauce tasted original and the cheese was not fake. She gobbled it up like she'd been on a deserted island for months. Both of my parents had salads, which they loved and sang the praises of, and my brother had a sandwich that he also enjoyed. All of us had a soup (either seafood bisque or eggplant curry) and it was all fantastic. I would strongly recommend this to anyone. Definitely worth the cash and the time. read more

I had the brie and fig portobello mushroom on risotto and it was heavenly. It was a great mixture of savory and dessert all in one. This place is one of the reasons that I LOVE to visit Spokane! Ambiance: Set in an old building with high cielings, marble tables, and very beautiful stained glass. They play good ambient chill music at a volume that isn't intrusive, but is loud enough to make you feel alive. The waittresses wear all black (like sprokets, from SNL) and it adds to a very cool vibe. All of my waitstaff have been very knoweldgable about the menu. Menu: Very diverse menu with something for everyone. The menu changes with seasons. Prices are very reasonable for what you get - apps are in the $15 range and entrees are in the $25-30 range. The portions are geneous and they don't skimp on the good stuff (like chevre or nuts on the salad). Food: Just spectacular. I had the jalapeno and ginger crab cake that had EXACTLY the right amount of ginger (I find ginger to be like rosemary - a littl goes a very long way and too much can be overpowering....) and a beautiful coconut curry sauce. It was a huge hunk of meaty fish, pan seared on top of risotto. I almost passed out when I tasted the risotto. The halibut was a touch overcooked - so if I went again, I would just ask that it be maybe slightly undercooked or something. Overall, a great place to go. This is the second time I've been to Mizuna and it wasn't as fabulous as the first time but it was still pretty tasty. I ordered the Pan Seared Duck Breast with Red Wine Risotto and mushroom herb-pan sauce. I really just felt like I could've used another duck breast because it seemed like I had a big serving of risotto and not enough meat to go along with it. Plus I was still hungry after my meal and that was even after having the Butter Lettuce salad and bread, there is no shame in my foodie game . My five year old daughter had the Cheese Pizza and an Apple Juice Lemonade which she loved. We also ordered Steamed Clams with Pork Belly and that was very good also. For the price point I just needed more duck breast and that would've made my night. I was so hungry I only remembered to take pictures of the appetizers, my apologies. I'd definitely recommend going to Mizuna and ordering the duck breast if you're not famished because if you are then I would probably suggest going for something heartier like the New York strip, because honestly that's what I plan on ordering next time. read more

I've only been to Mizuna once and it was on a business trip. We made a reservation and were seated right away. They assumed we wished to seat outside, which was fine it was a nice evening however I think it's important to ask a group their preference rather than assume. It's a little awkward having to leave the restaurant The atmosphere was relaxing and didn't get too loud. The service was prompt enough that I didn't notice bad or over eager service. Part of our team were vegetarians and they an entire menu for vegetarians with many options outside of just salad. The prices were also very reasonable which was nice because it allowed us to be frugal. I had the special which was Pork Belly and Grits which was pretty tasty but just a tad overcooked making it slightly dry. The grits were cooked to perfection. The other members of the team enjoyed their meals as well. Overall a pretty good experience for Spokane. read more
