Okay, this place is very, very solid, and the people are so sweet, so I'm unsure why there are some lower reviews? This definitely filled a spot in the Ojai lunch landscape - a good sandwich place that isn't too expensive. Is it Subway cheap? Of course not - they're a small business! But it's overall a very fair price for what you get. In terms of what you get, these are excellent deli sandwiches made with freshly carved meats and cheeses. I particularly love their calabrian aioli, and my favorite sandwich is the Jewish Sub (sans salami). They recently introduced half-sandwiches, which is excellent for people like me who a) cannot eat a whole sub in one sitting and b) prefer my sandwich fresh. The main con I can think of is the parking lot (which is narrow and isn't their fault). If you are expecting a super gourmet bespoke sandwich and want to pay $20, go to The Dutchess (which I also adore, but not for everyday). If you want a solid Jersey Mike's-but-better sandwich for ~$10, come here. read more

Friendly staff. Neighbourhood Deli. Much needed. Prices are typical lunch princes. For those complaining about price, take a moment to walk outside and look around where you're standing. Everything is expensive in Ojai. To walk in and out of this place with a meal under the $20 mark is an achievement. They use quality ingredients and pay a premium for rent. Want cheaper? Either buy the property and provide lower rent for businesses or just be cool and happy with a good bit of grub. read more

Hi, Posting about MJ's Deli again. Yesterday I picked up 35 assorted sandwiches for a closing night party for the cast and crew of a show I was in here in Ojai. Of course, I ordered a couple of days in advance. The sandwiches were wrapped, boxed and ready to go right on time; many of the celebrants had never been to MJ's and all were totally impressed. Stopped by MJ's for lunch. I ordered their tuna sandwich. It was good - but not $13.00 good. Not that I'm even a cheap person because I'm not. It's just that it's a very simple sandwich. Just mayo and shredded lettuce. No cheese or tomatoes, what's typically in a tuna salad sandwich. Ojai needs a deli that provides good sandwiches. This place aint' it! $34 for 2 sandwiches and 2 bags of chips was ridiculous for this quality. These were at best, mediocre. When I order pastrami or corned beef, I expect the real thing and not processed deli slices. Nothing creative about these sandwiches, no flavor, dry and nothing special about the bread. In fact, they are on par with Subway but twice the price. Compare sandwiches at Lincoln Deli in San Luis Obispo or Darby Dan's in South SF for around the same price - NO CONTEST!!! read more

I really cringe at leaving a bad review, but this place was so underwhelming and very expensive for a sandwich ($16!!), I felt I had to. I ordered the Turkey Sub and it was so basic I could've gone to Subway for something better. It was mostly bread and shaved iceberg lettuce. Vey little turkey, mayo, and cheddar.
