Great service! I've been coming here for the last 4 years ( I work nearby) and they never failed to disappoint me. One time, they had to replace the broken buckle of my "alligator" watch strap. So I've settled at three stars here on the service I recieved after thinking this over a lot. I have a Tag Heuer 6000 series watch that was long long overdue for an overhaul as it would lose about a minute/day and the bracelet and bezel were in desparate need of a polish so I started shopping around to have the work done. First thing I looked into was to send back to tag which would've been about 500-550 plus any replacement parts it may have needed. I shopped around a few high end shops in the Chicagoland area and they were all in the same 500'ish ballpark for overhaul/polish which was a bit more than I wanted to spend as I had a feeling this would need parts which would've put me out of the budget that I wanted to spend. I had been to MJ's a few times before for battery replacement and band adjustment on some much less expensive watches and had great service, but was hesitant with a high end watch and I didn't see any reviews for MJ's for higher end watch service anywhere on the net. I've seen they carry some used higher end watches in their case there (Rolex, Breitling, Tag, etc) so I stopped by to ask for an estimate about a month and a half ago. They told me I'd need to leave the watch for a couple days and they would have one of their techs look it over and give me a full estimate to perform an overhaul and polish on the watch and would call me in a couple days. I called back a week later and they quoted me 230 for the overhaul and 100 for the polish over the phone which included a 1 year warranty on the work. This sounded great to me so I gave them the OK to go ahead with the work and they told me 1-2 weeks to complete the work. Called a week later to see how things were going and they told me it would be ready in another week. Stop by the shop on my way home from work after two weeks and the watch is ready. Initial thoughts looking at the watch were that it LOOKED great. The job they did on the buffing and polishing was superb, especially considering this is a stainless watch with 18k inserts which is the most difficult type of watch to polish as there is soft metal(gold) and very hard metal(stainless). After saying I was satisfied Alex(owner) then looked towards the cash register and said "ok that will be $499". After confirming he just said $499 I asked what parts needed to be replaced and he said nothing, just standard rebuild and polish, $500 is our rate. Going back and forth I mentioned I was quoted $330, $230 for overhaul and $100 for polish. Then he said "oh yes, $330 for rebuild and $100 for polish so you owe $450". After some bickering back and forth and him changing the price back to $499 again he then went back into his office and "looked over some paperwork" and said oh my mistake, they did quote you $330, so that will be $350. After fighting for these last few dollars he came down to $339 and I was fine at this point, whatever I'll just pay it. So I paid $339 which I felt was still a fair price as the watch looked great and was still considerablly cheaper than anywhere else I had been quoted. Three days later the watch stops ticking. GREAT! Fiddle with the watch a little bit and shake it up and starts ticking again for an hour then stops. Go back and forth like this for a day and take it back. Show him it stopped ticking and he assures me they will take care of it under warranty and to come back in a week. Come back a week later and they show me the watch taken apart and said we ordered this and that from tag, you're self-winding mechanism wasn't charging the circuit correctly, parts will be here next week. So wait another week, go to pick up the watch yesterday, looks great and is ticking fine. They waived the cost of the replacement parts for my trouble, which if you know anything about these automatic Swiss watches the little parts are NOT cheap. Overall I'd rate my experience average, in the end Alex took care of me for the hassle and trouble by waiving the cost of the parts, He lost money on this rebuild I'm sure between whatever he paid his tech to take apart the watch twice and the cost of the replacement parts. If you get an estimate of work, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT IN WRITING. That would be my advice. I would probably go here again as his pricing is reasonable and he did make it right in the end, just keep in mind to get all estimates in writing. read more

I have spent 20 years working in a Swiss Watch and Luxury Jewelry Store, thus I know what I am talking about. This placed is owned by two really nice guys, Alex and Alex. They do not only do business with the public, but many actual jewelry stores use them too (the secret is now out). They have built a wonderful reputation and business based off of providing great service, at a reasonable price, and most importantly with a smile!! This was certainly representative when I went there today, I saw something that I cannot remember seeing other than during a sale at any jewelry store or related business in many years. Seven different customers were their in less than 10 minutes. I was really quite impressed. They can do battery changes, overhaul broken watches, shorten bracelets, etc. for most watches. My first watch they serviced they did a great job of refinishing. They have another battery operated watch to overhaul and a mechanical one to refinish to remove the scratches. I saw them shorten a watch bracelet while I was their today for under ten dollars. BEFORE YOU LEAVE, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THEIR THREE CASES OF PRE-OWNED WATCHES. My Porsche watch, vintage about 1975, had a broken stem that no other major watch service in Philadelphia or New York could repair or find a replacement for. On a visit to Chicago, I left my watch with MJ Watch Service understanding that repair was unlikely. If your watch needs a battery, no problem. If your mechanical watch needs a cleaning, no problem. If your mechanical watch needs a part, forget it. I have a LeCoultre mechanical chronograph from the late fifties, the seconds counter would not reset to zero. No problem they said, paid 375. Had to take it back 3 times, the last time the crystal fell off. Local watch repair shops cannot get parts, manufacturers want that business. Just wish they were honest about it. By the way, just picked up the watch, guess what, still does not reset to zero. They finally fixed it and apologized. read more

The folks at MJ's were some of the nicest people I've had to deal with for any type of service in the past. I was in a rush and came in for a battery replacement. I was told it could be done in about 10 minutes but upon noticing my expensive watch the employee suggested that I get a sealed battery replacement. Not knowing what that was, the guy took his time explaining it to me and how important it is for expensive watches with intricate parts as it prevents corrosion and rust on the inside (which could be costly). That said, I was not pressured into getting a service I didn't want. I also inquired about a refinish service and they recommended I wait before getting my watch refinished as it is still in pretty good condition. I got my watch a few days later and am very pleased. I took my 15+ year old Tissot T-Touch in for repairs. I was given an estimate that included a new movement and other parts. While the estimate was considerable, it was also considerably less than a new watch. And the old watch had sentimental value as well. Because the watch was so old, there was one part unavailable. The gentlemen at MJ were able to obtain a very similar new T-Touch from Tissot as part of an exchange program, but it cost them more than they had quoted me for repairs. What was really remarkable was they offered it to me for the price of the estimate, not the higher price they had paid. Fairness dictated that I reimburse them for their costs (which I did) but I was very impressed by their attitude and integrity and I highly recommend them. read more

I came into the shop hoping to replace the battery on my wife's Michelle watch. Possibly even a full overhaul of need be, but the man helping me didn't know I spoke Russian. They made fun of me, my wife and her watch. Said some nasty things thinking I didn't understand. It's hard to find a good watch repair shop. Especially when the reviews are usually flooded with 5 star reviews from people who bring in watches just for battery replacement. I went to MJ's since it had good reviews and has been in business for a long time. I went for another watch of mine, but while I was there I saw a watch I had been looking for in their display case. I decided to buy the watch and got a very fair price on it. I ended up not getting my other watch repaired here because the estimate was too steep. The watch I bought worked great for about 4 months and then it stopped ticking. I had a 1 year warranty when I bought it so I took it back. They told me it needed a new battery. Strange considering when I bought it they said it was serviced two months before I bought it. They replaced the battery and I had not had another problem for ~2 years. A few weeks ago the bracelet to the watch kept falling off. I took it back to MJ and showed them. The guy at the counter took a look and told me I was missing the tubes for pin. He told me the other side of the bracelet was also missing 1 of the 2 tube it should have. I told him well I bought the watch here so did you guys only put one tube in to being with? He apologized and said they would put the tubes in for a discount. Which was not a bad deal. I returned to get my watch and here's why I give MJ 1 star. They did not put in 4 new tubes. Once again they cut corners and only put in 1 of the 2 tubes there are supposed to be on each side, and in addition there was a scratch on the case that was not there before. I voiced my concern and I was brushed off by the manager who I believe is named Alex that that scratch was there and had probably occurred when I took the watch to some other repair shop. I said I had not taken it anywhere but here, but was dismissed again with him laughing. It was not worth the argument at this point. When my watch needs service again I will take it to an authorized dealer and not MJ. Also there's a sign now in the shop that says "Effective 3/7/17 watch battery replacements will be $50" that's the highest battery replacement price I've ever seen! read more

For tasks like pressure testing a watch, changing or adjusting a strap/bracelet, case polishing, or changing a battery - this is the place to go. If your watch needs to be opened for any reason (other than installing a new battery), keep searching. While the shop can service & repair automatic and manual watches, the lack of attention to detail will outshine an otherwise job well done. Watch #1 was returned back to me with a bent spring bar. Not a big deal if they were normal, removable spring bars. On this particular watch they were fixed (part of the case). This went unnoticed until I changed straps. Fixed spring bars are solid and almost impossible to bend... almost. Unfortunately, while the bent spring bar went unnoticed I took another mechanical watch in for repair. The watch was returned running perfectly which is wonderful. However, there is now dust and lint on the dial, multi-colored fibers bristling from where the dial meets the case, and a smudge inside the crystal. read more

I will Advise everybody that will go there to not do a Seal when change battery. it's only a way to steal 45$ from the customers. I know that they moved 15years ago to Glenview because it is a rich town and the owner has high prices on all his products and repairs because he says in Glenview and Northbrook they are rich fools that spend money. he puts not original pieces or used pieces that he buys on ebay for all his Rolex repairs, because he is no longer a Official Rolex repair shop. the clerk is very uneducated and sometimes he answers uneducated way to customers. returning to the "seal watches", no watch has a Seal when new and No seal gets broken when you open it. it is only a way to steal money. let them do the pressure test the correct way before if you want to see if I'm saying a lie. only in some cases watches caskets are ruined or crown is old or glue around crystal is hard, but this only when watch is old and in bad condition. only in this case watch has to be prepared and fixed to pass a water test. they use the words "Seal broken" to fool people so they get scared and pay 45$. beaware of this . read more

BAD EXPERIENCE and then IT BECAME WORSE On 3/7/2016, I took 2 Rado watches in for repair. One watch with a Tigers eye dial which was not working and I asked, please see if you can get the watch to run. I was quoted $179, I agreed. He wrote out a ticket with a description of the watch and gave me my copy. I gave him the second watch with a blue dial, which I have been wearing regularly and had stopped 2 days earlier. I was quoted a price of $217 and again I agreed and was given my copy of the ticket with the description of the watch. The only note on my ticket was "just stopped." I picked up the watches on 4/12/2016. The Tigers eye was running and was put into a bag. When I looked at my other watch, the blue dial had 2 scratches on the face. I questioned him about the scratches and he said that they were there when the watch was brought to them. I showed him my ticket with only "just stopped" on it and his copy now had dial cracked written in on his copy. He continued to insist that the watch was damaged when it was brought in and I told him there were no scratches on the dial. I asked "why were the scratches not on my copy of the original ticket and appeared to be written on his?" He said it must be a mistake. I asked him to please repair the scratches and he told me that the charge would be $150. I asked why I had to pay for their mistake and he told me that they were not responsible for what turned out tp be a crack. I paid $389 and took my watches. I am sorry that I didn't take pictures of the 2 relatively expensive watches before I left them there. I would tell anybody that would do business with MJ WATCH to be extremely cautious and recommend to take pictures of the item(s) that you intrust to them. They seem to prefer money over integrity. and IT BECAME WORSE....... The watch with the BLUE DIAL started to show moisture inside the crystal. I asked and they said that they were not responsible. The Rado's are waterproof watches and they did not waterproof the Blue Dial watch before they closed it after they serviced it. I took the watch to another certified Rado repair dealer, Glezer and Krause, and they appraised the water damage repair at $401. I paid MJ $217 and now have a watch needing additional repairs because of their carelessness. BEWARE and BE(A)WARE if you choose to do business with MJ WATCH! read more

Can't believe what I just experienced! I brought my Seiko Diver's Watch in to MJ's for repair. When I dropped it off, the second hand worked and the watch sounded tight, i.e. nothing loose in it- I just could not change the hour hand. I was told I'd get a call the next day about the estimate for a repair. A call never came. So the next day, I called them and was told that the watch could not be fixed, a ball bearing was broken and their suppliers could not get the parts to fix it. I went to pick it up and when Serg handed it to me I saw that the second hand no longer worked and when I moved the watch, it sounded like all the parts were loose inside. Serg went and got an older man (w/ an accent) and when I told him that I didn't drop it off like this, he immediately got defensive and said, " We didn't take any parts out. None of the parts would fit in any of the watches here." When questioned further about returning the watch to me in the state with which I brought it in, he stated emphatically, "The watch never worked. It'll never work again." I feel they destroyed my property and lied to me about it. CAUTION: BEWARE when dropping a watch off for a free estimate. read more

Had a horrible experience. Brought in my watch for a new battery and then brought it back again because it stopped. They said nothing was wrong. Next thing I know they didn't seal the watch which I didn't know until I saw steam in the corner. Its now at Tag Heuer to be fixed correctly. Their mistake cost me $265, they are not even willing to split the cost with me. I would never go back and don't recommend it if you have an expensive watch. Go to a more reputable company like Razney Jewelers, you may pay a little more but you will never have any problems. read more

MJ does all their work in-house right there behind the counter. Looks like a pretty busy place. I took in an old Seiko programmable watch that had one button that didn't work. I had already tried to free it up with some lubricant. They quoted me $25 but no charge if they couldn't do it. At pickup time the button was fixed and I happily paid the $25 fee. At the same time, I brought in a couple of old gold watches I no longer needed. One was not repairable so I sold it to them for the gold value and I received a very fair amount. The other they didn't want to buy but gave me a suggested range to ask on eBay. They are very professional and I would trust them again with watch repairs. read more

Extremely dishonest place to go and not trustworthy I took my husbands watch to get a battery changed, which they did for me in 5 minutes for $10. I thought wow, then my husband wore the watch for one day and water formed inside the watch. I brought it in and they told me that it had to be sealed. I asked why they didn't seal it the first time and they said that every watch that is worn in water needs to be sealed. So after a little bit of frustration I told them to just air it out and seal it (at my expense of $30). So they did that and then guess what... the watch didn't work! So I took it back in later that week and after they evaluated it was told that the watch needed a deep cleaning or it would never work again at a value of $125. I asked if the water had anything to do with it and was given a big NO. Well I was not happy so I asked to speak to the manager who told me that I was asked when I brought the watch in if my husband wore it in water... I WAS NEVER ASKED THAT. He wears it 24/7, swimming, in the shower... etc. They said they absolutely asked me because it was policy. This is coming from the manager who I've never even spoken to before. I told them I was never asked and he finally said okay and dropped the price to $100 to fix (yippie). My husband called to find out what was going on and the manager said that he definitely asked me if he wore it in the water and I said no. Now he was lying to my husband even though he was going on about being honest. My husband asked if the manager (whom he was talking to) was the one to actually talk to me, which he then said no... so basically he was just making up stuff. Long story short we took it to another place that then told us that the water HAD damaged the watch. THE WATER THAT WE WERE TOLD DIDN'T EFFECT THE WATCH AT ALL. So they lied about everything. Went to this shop to change the battery of a $100 watch. A young guy was at the counter. He took my watch and went to one of the desks. He came back 5 minutes later and handed me the watch. When I looked at the back of it I saw a deep scratch and many small ones. I asked what happened and instead of admitting the mistake, he tried to convince me that his tools could have not scratch it.The battery was indeed replaced. I was charged $10 and I hope at least that the battery will last as much as the original one.Due to the good reviews I saw online, I was planning to bring in an automatic Mont Blanc for cleaning, but now after my experience I would advise anyone contemplating to use this shop to stay away from it. read more

What a revelation! In 7 minutes and for less than $40 I had a new battery in one watch and a genuine lizard band on another. It wasn't 10 o'clock yet and when I left there were 6 people behind me. I found out about MJ Watch Service on Yelp and decided to give it a go. I've been in need of a new watch battery for way too long. Took my Michael Kors watch to MJ's and had the battery replaced while I waited (5 minutes) for only $10! He gave me the option of a basic battery replacement for $10 or to replace it & reseal the water resistant quality for $45. I went with the basic as I'm not around water, so I should be good, but it's nice to have the option. If you go with the reseal treatment it's next day pickup, which is still great, but just the battery replacement is while you wait. And you can't beat $10! Great service - quick & quality. As long as the battery in this watch lasts I'll for sure bring others in to MJ's service. read more

When my Tissot watch stopped working, I thought that all it needed was a battery change. When I took it into MJ Watch, they broke the bad news that my timepiece needed a new circuit, the cost of which would be half what I paid for the watch originally. I was torn on whether I should throw that kind of money at an old watch, so I spent a few weeks searching for a new watch. When I couldn't find anything that I liked, I returned to MJ Watch and rolled the dice on the new circuit. My watch was ready in less time than they quoted me, and it appears good as new.
