The fatty brisket especially was incredible. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor, and honestly didn't even need sauce. This recent visit felt like a completely different restaurant. Apparently you can't request fatty or lean anymore, and the brisket I received was so dry it literally crumbled apart like beef sawdust. There was basically zero fat left on it, which also meant very little flavor. For the first time ever, the sauce wasn't optional... it was rescue equipment. The ribs were okay, but even they weren't what they used to be. They used to have that perfect fall-off-the-bone texture, and now they were just kind of there. Not terrible, just disappointing compared to how good this place once was. I'm not trying to trash Trax because I know how great they can be. That's actually what makes this frustrating. It feels like the brisket went from "Texas smokehouse masterpiece" to "beef jerky with a college degree."

You can order the meat only or get a dinner that includes 2 sides and your choice of bread (white, wheat, or cornbread). They provide very generous portion sizes. The rib tips are the best that I have had in Indy thus far. They are tender and the seasoning they use is delicious. You could eat them without any sauce. However, the sauce is what takes it over the top for me. They offer sweet, medium, hot, or they will mix the sauces for you. The hot has a pretty good kick as a warning if you are sensitive to spice. I recently tried the Bar B Q bun, which is essentially a pulled pork sandwich. The pork is finely shredded and the sauce is poured on top of the pork. It's almost a fork and knife sandwich, as the bottom bun gets soaked in the sauce. Their sides have definitely reduced in quality over the years. I recently tried the mac and cheese and greens. As a note, they only have greens Friday - Sunday and they often times run out on Sunday if you do not get there early. The mac and cheese was dry and had little flavor. The greens, which used to be my favorite in the city, reminded me of cooked spinach and weren't seasoned. The service remains great. With the amount of people waiting while I was there, they were friendly and efficient. I wanted to order chess pie and there were not any readily available behind the counter. They told me they had some coming out of the oven in the kitchen if I was willing to wait and they brought it over once done. It is carry-out only, so be prepared to take it elsewhere to eat. You can call ahead to place your order as well.

However, in planning the meal it had inadvertently been overlooked that Pizzology didn't open until 4pm. So, making a quick change of plans meant that we stopped in at Rackz almost directly in front of the Pizzology building. In case it's not obvious, this is a BBQ joint. There's accessible parking, an appropriate curb-cut, and the entryway is a pretty easy to maneuver one-sided glass door that is level to the ground. I found the interior to be a pretty good layout. There's also outside dining that's available when the weather is appropriate. The menu is consistent with most BBQ joints. Rackz offers both dinners (two sides and drink plus meat) or sandwich combos (only one side). The price range is generally in the $10-20 range, though they also offer some family-style options that go higher. So, we're talking BBQ, pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket, ribs, and there's even a breaded tenderloin sandwich. They also have a "veggie BBQ dinner." Don't ask me, but it's on the menu. Sides are creative ranging from sidewinder fries to potato salad, mac n' cheese, baked beans, glazed carrots (which I got the chance to try from a fellow diner - I really did like these), and a few other items. I was honestly very impressed with the menu. They also have kids meals and a couple of different Wick's Pies (the classic sugar cream and pecan). It's not very big. If you blink, you will pass it on the way to Six Points. Inside i think it might seat a dozen people. But the barbecue is everything I miss having moved here from Austin, Texas. I call it perfect. I'm not a fan of heat spice and it was just shy of knocking on the door. So don't be afraid of it. The chicken was juicy and had rosemary and some other aromatics I couldn't place. It was VERY good chicken. I doubled down on the green beans as a side. They were real green beans. They may have originally come in a can, but they were cooked with care and tasted homecooked with some flavor and smokey depth. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend stopping.
