Rackx is an awesome locally owned bbq restaurant in Carmel! It's the kind of place that has a following and the clerks know the regulars by name. The menu is a mix of bbq, soul and Southern style cooking. Cornbread, green beans, peach cobbler, etc., included. I had the bbq loaded baked potato with bbq beef brisket. The brisket is amazingly tender and moist. The potato was smothered in cheese, onions, jalapeños and bacon. Yum. The bbq sauces are very tasty. I had the tangy sauce which had a kick to it. My husband had the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pork was hand prepped and breaded and very good. The Sidewinder fries are the BEST in Indy area - hands down and the portion is generous. Everyone was stealing his fries. My granddaughter had the Kid's pork bbq slider with Mac and cheese. She also devoured a corn muffin. She loved her meal. Others had the Pork Bbq sandwich combo with backed beans. The beans are freshly prepared and crave worthy. Pork sandwiches had a generous amount of moist pulled pork. We ordered at the counter and food is prepared fresh so there's a bit of a wait during dinner hour. About half people get their food to go. Prices are reasonable - especially desserts. The dining area is small - maybe five tables. Seating is tight. The patio area outside is nice if the Indiana weather cooperates. I love this place. read more

My visit to Rackz BBQ was an accident. I'd been scheduled to meet a small group of people at the nearby Pizzology for lunch. However, in planning the meal it had inadvertently been overlooked that Pizzology didn't open until 4pm. So, making a quick change of plans meant that we stopped in at Rackz almost directly in front of the Pizzology building. In case it's not obvious, this is a BBQ joint. There's accessible parking, an appropriate curb-cut, and the entryway is a pretty easy to maneuver one-sided glass door that is level to the ground. I found the interior to be a pretty good layout. There's also outside dining that's available when the weather is appropriate. The menu is consistent with most BBQ joints. Rackz offers both dinners (two sides and drink plus meat) or sandwich combos (only one side). The price range is generally in the $10-20 range, though they also offer some family-style options that go higher. So, we're talking BBQ, pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket, ribs, and there's even a breaded tenderloin sandwich. They also have a "veggie BBQ dinner." Don't ask me, but it's on the menu. Sides are creative ranging from sidewinder fries to potato salad, mac n' cheese, baked beans, glazed carrots (which I got the chance to try from a fellow diner - I really did like these), and a few other items. I was honestly very impressed with the menu. They also have kids meals and a couple of different Wick's Pies (the classic sugar cream and pecan). I opted for pulled chicken sandwich with sidewinder fries. As we know, I always get iced tea. I really wanted to go for the breaded tenderloin, but I had a full afternoon and that's a splurge for me. However, I was super happy with this meal and would easily order it again. Employees are friendly. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Rackz also offers catering and they do have a rewards program. While this is a bit out of my way, I'd easily return when in the area. read more

Best barbecue everything in Indianapolis area. We eat in their ginormous warehouse dining room, which id great for kids because there is room to let them move around. We love the brisket and ribs, all the sides are great too. We often order pick up and they have several tray(family) sizes depending on how many people eat. The cashiers are very friendly and helpful. In fact everyone is friendly and sometimes the owner comes out to says hi. Get there before church lets out on Sunday or you are in for a long line. 10 out of 10! I honestly can't wait to go back again. Me and mom split a bunch of food such as rib tips and brisket. Ambiance: The establishment is small but mighty! A lot of people seem to order pickup, lucky enough me and my mom were able grab a seat. Since it was our first time trying I wanted to eat it right away. Tables and floors were clean. Service: The cashier answered any questions I asked and gave recommendations on what to try. She even let us try some of their housemade ranch and that was chefs kiss. Food: The brisket is melt in your mouth and the tip tips actually had some meat to them unlike some other places I've been too and the prices were very reasonable for how much you get! We ever got pulled pork which my mom isn't the biggest fan of and even she enjoyed it All in all I loved this place more than I thought I would. We've gotten carryout a couple of times now over the last month. The portions are HUGE! Enough easily for two meals. I've had the pulled pork sandwich and slaw both times. Both times the pork was moist and perfectly cooked. They allow up to three different bbq sauces with each item, which is plenty! The slaw was delicious! Had a taste for some BBQ and was in the area. I had heard about there being this new (to me) bbq spot, so said why not. Upon entering, there was this nice lady who greeted us. She was very friendly and engaging. She was wiping down tables and the counter; making sure the place was clean and presentable. It's not too big inside, but big enough. They have outdoor seating which is a plus! The also have an area with pub style seating, up by the front door in the window. It took us a minute to decide what we wanted. We ended up deciding to share a combo meal; 2 meats & 2 sides. Later, after eating, we had a sweet tooth and went for some dessert; pecan pie. I wanted to give 5 stars, but the sides need some work and the pecan pie wasn't the best. We were told it wasn't made in house, but rather purchased from a local company. The custard part of the pie wasn't bad, but something was throwing the taste off. I'm not sure if it was the crust or actual pecans, but neither tasted fresh. And that taste was throwing the whole slice off. The brisket was very tender, fresh and seasoned. I should've gotten it without the sauce to taste it before, but nevertheless, it was good. For sauce, we went with a mix of hot & mild. This was the perfect blend for the sauce. It gave the right amount of heat. The pulled chicken was not dry and again, the sauce was the perfect touch. The meats definitely held their own. Now the sides could use some work. We didn't care for the baked beans. They seemed a bit too thick as if they were cooked too long. No hint of sweetness or any other distinguished flavors. I prefer my baked beans more flavorful and with some juice. Now the green beans were different. Ones I wouldn't expect to find on a bbq menu, but they managed to fit in some how. They were bright in color, had a nice crunch and was seasoned. In my opinion, they were more like an Italian green bean. They had hints of garlic and Parmesan. And last but not least, the cornbread muffin was very satisfying. It wasn't dry, yet not falling apart. It also had pieces of corn throughout, but not a lot where it changed the consistency. Overall, this hidden gem is worth going back for the meats & customer service alone. I think after a certain time, they offer Smoked fried wings. The sign was put out after we had been there a while. We got takeout barbecue from Rackz BBQ on Super Bowl weekend, because football and barbecue seem to go together. I know nothing about football and almost nothing about barbecue, but I think that the food here is very good, so take my opinion -- from a non-barbecue person -- for what you will. We got the family meal for four people, which came with 1 pound of pork or chicken, 2 large sides, 4 corn bread muffins and a sauce. You can get a 1/2 pound of pork and a 1/2 pound of chicken, so that's what we got. And the sides we chose were mac & cheese and baked beans. All of the food was great, but we especially loved the corn bread muffins. I think they have cheese in them, but I know for sure that they have kernels of corn in them. They're slightly sweet and soft -- basically, everything you want in a corn bread muffin. As much as I liked the barbecue pork and barbecue chicken hot when we first ordered it, I think I liked it better the next day as leftovers after it had been sitting in the fridge for several hours. I think that's a good sign of great food: when it tastes as good or better the next day. Speaking of leftovers: I was afraid that the four-person family meal wouldn't be enough food for my family of four, but it was more than enough! The server/cashier/hostess whatever you to call her was amazing. She stole the show away. She was so kind and friendly to everyone that came in and made sure you enjoyed the experience. She knew her customers asking regulars how vacations were and continuing conversations with ease. It was like a childhood friend's mom when you were younger making sure you had everything and more of what you needed. So to put it short, staffing was amazing. It was a small space, maybe 5 tables and a small little 4 person bar top. Not so small that you felt like you were on top of one another but cozy. The cost seemed reasonable for the food I received, I totally full after I finished my meal. The food came out quickly and was everything I ordered in larger portions than I expected. The sidewinder fries were ok, but I'd prefer them slightly more crispy especially with the larger pieces. The cornbread was unique where it seemed to dipped in a batter to make it a little more sweeter than normal but it was good. The Mac and cheese was right was average and what you would expect. The brisket and pulled pork were above average, I preferred the pulled pork over the brisket. Both cuts were tender but not fall of the bone style. I enjoyed both with and without sauce. I tried the sweet and spicy sauces. The spicy had a perfect balance of just a very slight kick. The sweet sauce grew on me but I probably would not order it again. I was in Carmel for the day and had a hankering for BBQ. I searched Yelp and found Rackz BBQ. It had a 4.5 star rating with a lot of excellent reviews. You order at the counter and I was greeted by a nice gentlemen, who was very helpful. I went with brisket and ribs and beans and mac and cheese. I was even shocked that they serve sweet tea! The sweet tea container was empty but they made some more just for me. I really appreciated it. This BBQ was fabulous! The brisket was chopped. It was very tender and flavorful. The ribs had an excellent rub and were easy to chew! The beans were homemade and the mac and cheese was solid. The meal came with cornbread, which might have been the best side. There are 3 sauces - sweet, tangy, and spicy. I loved all the sauces but the tangy is what stood out. I don't know what ingredient is added to that sauce, but it has a bold, unique taste. All sauces are homemade in store. Sweet tea was very much appreciated. I will be making a return visit soon to Rackz. read more

Over 20 years ago there was a Great BBQ place off 71st and Shadeland called GT South. Their food was Amazing, and all of my co-workers patronized this restaurant all week long. It was nothing new to hear the group gather for lunch and hear someone say, "GT South for lunch?" Everyone would say yes and off we would go for a great meal! Imagine my joy when I found out at taste of Carmel that GT South has been reborn as Rackz right here in Carmel. The BBQ is as good if not better than I remember, and the staff is friendly, knows their product, and the service is as amazing as the food, and trust me, that's saying something! The pulled pork is tender, the brisket is savory and delicious, and the sauces are absolutely delicious. I understand wanting to stand out and be original but there's a few things that should be consistent at a bbq joint: green beans should be granny style not al dente and slaw? It's gotta have sugar!
