This is by far my favorite place to eat around here. Their constantly changing drink and food menus make it so you can go here constantly and always get something different. The staff there is amazing! They are usually busy yet the wait time is generally minimal. If I was rating this place alone on food, it would be a five. We ordered the flaming cheese for appetizer. Never had it before or heard of it before really. It was delicious and seeing it lit up into flames was pretty cool. We both ordered the salmon for entree which was cooked perfectly in a nice light sauce. Loved the edamame in a peanut sauce. Delicious! The food was very good. The cocktails on the other hand were very average to the point where I left half a glass behind. If I was looking for cocktails, I would not come back here. The tiki drinks seemed out of place for a restaurant in Owego. It looks like they are trying to go for an island feel for the place but it doesn't really work. It's Owego. They did a good job with the nice open patio on the river but don't try to make it into something it's not. Trying to make a reservation was weird. When I called to make reservations, I was told the latest reservations we could make were at 8. The restaurant closes at 9. But we could still walk in after 8 and get a table if it was available as long as our orders were put in before 9pm because the kitchen closes at 9. Not sure why we couldn't make a reservation for 8:30 with that logic but it still worked for us as when we got there after 8 we had no problem getting a table. The funny thing was we got reminded again as we were getting seated that their kitchen closes at 9. It wasn't even 8:30 yet. Talk about making your guests feel unwelcome as soon as they walk in the door. After we finished our entrees, one of the other servers stopped by our table to see if we wanted dessert because their kitchen closes at 9pm. It was already 9:13pm! We didn't know if they had a DeLorean so we could get that dessert ordered. MJs had 4.5 stars on Yelp, so we had high expectations. We were happy that the food, drinks and service exceeded our expectations. We shared flaming cheese (delicious!) and Stuffed Ports Bella mushroom (superb!) we both had the sauté (with shrimp) and it was great too! Service was friendly and informative. While I've been to MJ's a couple of times and really enjoyed my experience (great food, great drinks), we came for Mother's Day and were part of the party of 10. I was there for the interaction and the customer was not physically aggressive in any way. It was difficult to hear so she needed to speak loudly. Because our table wasn't ready, we really had nowhere to go and at one point we were told by the owner that we "need to move" because the tables we were standing near were reserved. We couldn't sit at the high tables because we had an elderly family member and an infant. The waitress was wonderful and very kind and accommodating. My assumption is that the owner was flustered because it was very busy there, but the idea that we had to put down a deposit for a reservation was crazy enough but then not having a table when we arrived was upsetting. It's not right and kind of sad that the owner is making the customer out to be aggressive and abusive when no such thing took place, rather than acknowledge that she handled the situation poorly. read more

Might try again since the restaurant is so popular but in the two times I went the food was awful! The appetizer we had with some sort of baked cheese was way expensive for how much you get. The salad dressing was so vinegary me and my friends could not eat it, and my burger was a solid block of charcoal. Since I only ate a bite out of my burger they did comp my meal, but waitstaff was very rude about it. This was a few months ago and google reminded me to do a review. Wow. Simply wow. The sign is mysterious and the outside of the place doesn't suggest much, but walk inside and you'll find a warm, modern, and inviting place with a killer view of the Susquehanna. The river facing back wall of the restaurant is a windowed rollup garage door that opens onto a broad new deck. This will be a great place on some summer evening (it's cold now and I'm glad to be inside). I came for breakfast (get here before 11 on weekends to get a table). Service was fast and friendly. The menu is eclectic in a good way: not at all the same greasy spoon stuff that you'll find literally everywhere else. I had the chorizo omelet - perfect. It came with some cheesy hash thing (heavenly hash) that was great. Portions were right sized : not the bucket of food that often characterized southern tier breakfast places (cough cough Pete's legacy cough cough). They offer a range of cocktails for those so inclined. The drinks looked killer. I can't wait to try everything else on the menu. This is easily the best breakfast place in the Binghamton area. I have high hopes for lunch and dinner too. I'll be back. Added: The lunch:dinner menu looks awesome and includes Mexican influences (of Jorge, the J in MJs) ceviche, sopas, tacos. Nice place! It's very warm and inviting, like walking into someone's home that just so happens to have a restaurant and bar. Both times I've gone I've gotten the sopes. It's more of a snacky dinner food kind of place than a full on dinner place. They do have some dinner specials which I'd like to try. My boyfriend got the Cuban which he thoroughly enjoyed. I've been here twice. It's a nice place, a bit on the smaller side. The menu, while not huge, offers a nice variety. In my two trips there, the service was great; the wait staff was very attentive. My first trip there, I tried the cheese steak with MJ fries. The cheese steak was one of the better cheese steaks I've had in the area. The MJ fries are a nice change up from your regular run of the mill fries as they come with Feta cheese on them. On my most recent visit, I had the brisket sandwich. I was very disappointed in it, for a few reasons. For one, it was a tiny sandwich. To put it in perspective, it was a little bit larger than a slider. Secondly, the brisket was tasteless. The accompaniments on the sandwich had an okay flavor, but the brisket brought nothing to the table other than a textural component. If the sandwich had a spectacular flavor, I'd be much more inclined to overlook how small it was. But, it left me disappointed in the flavor and hungry, to boot. read more

My husband and a friend stopped in for lunch on our way to Maine. Loved the rustic decor and the patio seating. We had a few cocktails. The Bloody Mary had the right amount of spicy and the shrimp garnish was a delicious bonus. I had the pear/ pomegranate cocktail and it was light and refreshing with a yummy candied ginger garnish. We started off with the saganaki... you can't get Greek style flaming cheese very often and it was a really fun presentation. I enjoyed the chicken lettuce cups. The perfect amount to a light lunch. The menu had many heathy options that were not boring salads which was fantastic. My husband loved the PHO-nominal sandwich... the pork was so tender and the pickled veggies were crunchy & delicious. Our friend had the ceviche as well as the deviled eggs and he said both were very good. Anyways, Chelsie B was our waitress (I saved the receipt LOL) She was AWESOME. We loved her recommendations, she was funny, and she was very attentive. Setting out on the deck, overlooking the river was delightful; the service was great; the beer was cheap. But to be honest, the food was mediocre. I had MJ's version of a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, which, while certainly edible, was boring, featured dried-out chunks of pork and couldn't hold a candle to a banh mi offered at any Vietnamese food truck in New York City. My wife had a cheeseburger and while I liked my taste, it tasted like lamb, which she doesn't like, rather than beef. The waitress said it might be the marinade, but a burger should taste like a burger. I realize this is a very successful restaurant, but it's all-over-the-place menu reminded me of a Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares episode. MJ's is hands down the best place for dinner in Owego. Don't let the exterior fool you. Its a very unassuming red building next to a car lot.
