My first barber is like a brother to me, and I couldn't imagine anyone else cutting my hair. When I moved to California, finding that same level of detail and care was almost impossible for the longest, until I discovered Ali at MJ's Barbershop in Alhambra. I walked in, and she was the only one there cutting a client. Hesitant, I waited, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made all year. Ali is exceptional. With over 15 years of experience, she has a vision for detail like no other. It's more than a haircut; it's an experience. From the precision in my beard grooming, the sharpness in the line up, to the relaxing temple massages, every detail is perfect and necessary every time once you've had it. This was the first time I took my son here. It's a very male barber shop type feel. It was clean and nice and cold from the air conditioning. My son wanted a fade burst baseball haircut and he was seated right away to get that done. I think the owner said the barber doing his hair was the best guy in Alhambra! I waited and watched the office reruns they had there, that was fun. They also have a ATM machine. My boy was very happy with the haircut. Been coming here for a minute. Barbers are friendly. Go see Miguel, he's my guy. The store is well decorated with sports and classic memorabilia. They sometimes play loud music or sometimes there is a movie on. If you have kids sometimes the barbers can use foul language, but that could just be because I'm the only one in at times, I'm sure if there were kids or ladies they'd adjust to the circumstances. All n all a good experience, walkins are taken, but you can also make an appointment. So far this is the quickest shop in Alhambra I've found. I've gone in to MJ's several times to somewhat supervise my boyfriend's beard grooming. There have been a couple not so great experiences in the past. However, once he started seeing Hugo, it's been smooth sailing. Hugo is attentive, listens to what we (I) envision as the final result, and delivers. Based on our experiences with Hugo, I knew we could trust him with my son's hair. My 8 year old has been growing his hair out as a result of a bad cut a couple months ago (poor guy has been wearing beanies every single day to cover it up) and was more than ready for a repair. We walked in without an appointment and were relieved to see that Hugo was working/available. I really appreciated the attention and patience Hugo displayed. He took the time to find a conversation topic my son would relate to (Fortnite) and didn't show any irritation with my son's constant wiggling. So glad we came in; very happy with the cut. I brought my 13yo son here and we will never be back. Barbers cussing up a storm, every convo was an F bomb. There were little kids present too! It was so unprofessional. Missed appt, so we had to wait. I was so uncomfortable and so was my son. We don't use profanity at home. But he REALLY needed a cut. Cut wasn't even that good. If you're looking for a good WALK-IN barber shop, do NOT come here. The vibe is great, there are some barbers there that show proper artistry. However, they are always booked with their clients (which is understandable.) I'm not referring to the barber shop as a whole. I am simply referring to WALK-IN haircuts. Sometimes, a person just needs a haircut in a hurry for a special occasion or whatever reason. That's why walk-ins exist. The issue I have with this barber shop is that they had some one extremely inexperienced to cut my hair. When I say inexperienced, i am referring to: 1. Asking for a mid fade and getting a high fade 2. Asking for length on the top, receiving an 8 guard against the grain. 3. The cut taking 2 hours 4. The shop owner had to come in and fix the destruction to the best of his ability. But as the saying goes, you can't polish a turd. My hair was long and workable for the cut I desired. I even showed the guy a picture to what I was referring to, and got nothing close to what I asked for. Why would they let a "barber" cut someone's hair and charge them 35 dollars for a sloppy job. If I wanted to get messed up, I would much rather have gone to a barber school that charges less and gives lesser quality. It's understandable, they're learning. In this case, they're charging me for someone with poor skill level at med-high skill level prices. Overall, they really destroyed my hair. I have to wait months for my hair to grow back now. Did I mention this was my second time coming? The last time they kind of gave me what I wanted. It wasn't a bad cut, not amazing either. I had to go home and trim some edges myself. Typically, I'm not one to write yelp reviews. I honestly never want to waste the time to do so or really care that much. However his time, I couldn't just let this be. So as stated, if you are looking for a barber shop to walk-in and get a quality cut. Do NOT come here. Unless you're going to schedule a cut with one of the experienced barbers, DO NOT waste your time and hard earned money. Worst 35 dollars I've spent in a while. Some guy answered the phone and I asked "hello, are you accepting walk-ins today?" And without even answering my question he said "uh.. can you call back later cuz there's a line right now." This is my go-to spot for a hair cut. Although I sport a clean shaven head, I still drop in here at least once a month to have my beard trimmed and cleaned up. I'm particular about who I trust with my beard. For me, Hugo has the only chair I'll sit in. He took the time to listen to how I preferred my beard to be styled and he hasn't let me down yet. The entire shop is well equipped to serve any of your barbershop needs. But as anyone who's a regular at any barbershop knows, once you get that one barber who understands you...you stay loyal. Randomly went here for a walk-in since my usual barber was unavailable. Said they could take me and called some one from the back out front. He started cutting my hair and I instantly realized he was very inexperienced and didn't quite have his technique down. By the time it came time to blend he had to call another barber over to help clean it up. Never was faced towards a mirror, so had no idea what was going on with my hair and had no input. Turns out the guy was an apprentice and had been working there a month. Had I known some random guy who has been hanging out in a barbershop for a month was cutting my hair, I would have passed. I was still charged the full amount of $30, which is a joke, DON'T HAVE YOUR BOY PRACTICE ON THE PUBLIC WITHOUT DISCLOSING IT. I'm sure, there wasn't even a barbers license. Went here after reopening from Covid, and was glad this local business was back. They raised the prices of their regular haircuts to $30, which is on the pricey end but I understand given the difficulty reopening. The cut was high quality and nice, but the big issue was that all the staff were not wearing masks. Furthermore, they were talking to each other loudly across the room in front of the client's faces (who were also not wearing masks). It was just uncomfortable and felt unsafe, especially given how many strangers they interact with a day like that. The staff really needs to be wearing masks after reopening. read more

$35 for a haircut now..... this is a hit or miss type of place. My haircut wasn't properly blended when I came home and had to tell them to even the sideburns. I would think for $30 kids and $35 for adults would have more attention to detail but no. One and done! And I've only got myself to blame for this. I have my regular barber at Vinh's. But I decided to give this shop a try since I was close by and also wanted to support local businesses right? Bad idea. I came here on a Wednesday evening and it was not so busy. I was quickly seated to get my haircut. Then the barber proceeded to ask what style I wanted, so I said lets do a fohawk. I asked to make sure he did know how to cut one and he assured me of it. The weird thing here is they don't face you to a mirror when they are cutting your hair. So you don't get the see the progress as things go. Cut to the chase, by the end of my haircut he turned me around and Lo and behold... It's a MOHAWK. I specifically asked for a fohawk so that it's not as intense. This guy was so sure he knew what I wanted also. Just a bit disappointed and have to go into my office job looking like a kid for a few weeks. No biggie right? (See pics that I posted for their crappy cut) And I still had to pay $15 for this joke haircut. OVERALL, if you are looking for a professional cut there are other places that does it way better for the same price. (Vinh's for example). Otherwise, if you are looking for a cheaper cut there are way cheaper places that will do just as crappy of a job as MJ's. I AM NEVER VENTURING OUT TO OTHER HAIR SALONS IN MY LIFE AGAIN.
