I am so stoked about this place and it's right up the street from me. I went in there earlier this week simply for a routine tube replacement for the front tire and the service was friendly and quick, not that I was in a hurry as I was browsing around and also enjoying the great music that was playing. X was blasting as I walked in. Bikes and punk rock go together like gin and tonic. They seemed to have a pretty decent selection for such a small shop, but the fact is it's a small neighborhood bike shop and those are the best kind. MJ's Cyclery has become my go-to LBS. The owners are kind, patient, and genuinely good people--what's more, they do excellent work. The look and feel of their shop is very welcoming and kickback. This is a relief after experiencing so many other shops that cater primarily to racers or mountain bikers and give off an uncomfortable sense of elitism. I recently joined the "no car, bike club" in San Diego & have been learning the in's & out's of bikes as ones main form of transportation(which can be un expectantly annoying & expensive to say the least).. I chose to rank this bike shop 2 stars simply because well, my bike is not fixed. Every time I go in I say it's for the same problem, every still my bike is not fixed. This last time, I brought my bike in because my tires needed to be changed. Twice I have been told that the tube is fine, and that I should air my tires every time I ride. I'm pretty sure that is not realistic or an excuse to not change them out. The snotty girl who always helps me, told me "I should keep better care of my bike and bring it inside." Not only do I bring my bike inside, but I have a wall rack, but whatever. What really tipped the glass is I waited a couple days to get it back (no biggie) but when I got the bike back, the guys were a little weird and told me that it might make a new sound...my gears make the worse racket ever! The moment I rode it my gears grind and made me think my bike is falling apart. AND the tires where flat the next day. So no thank you, waste your money somewhere else. read more

There are many local bike shops in San Diego but few live up to the professionalism and friendliness that MJ has to offer. I came into their store initially to pick up a new tube after popping one during my lunch ride. After all was said and then done I noticed that I developed a pinch flat on my emergency tube so thats 2 flats in one day! So there I was all despondent that I'd have to buy another tube to replace my replacement tube :( Thankfully, one of MJ's associates was kind enough to comp me a free tube and give me some pointers on how to properly fix my tire. Straightforward and not snobby! I have an inexpensive bike that unfortunately has to sit outdoors and gets trashed by the elements. It'd been quite awhile since I was able to ride it, and I knew it was going to need a few things fixed. Brought it in; they looked it over right away, gave me a price, discussed options and told me when it would be ready. A nice change from snobby bike shops I've visited in the past that refused to fix inexpensive bikes and/or lectured me that I should buy an expensive bike I don't need and somehow keep it inside anyway. I'm pretty much a bike noob and these guys made me feel very comfortable & welcome. They helped me find and install a rack so I can carry stuff on my bike. Hey, I said I was new to this. Now I can use my bike to ride to work, the store, etc. The store is friendly & inviting with a nice mix of products. They helped us find things in our price range without trying to upsell more expensive, higher-margin products. To me, that shows that they're in this for the long term and they want to develop relationships with their customers, not just make a quick buck. I'll definitely be back here. Bought a tube and popped it when I was replacing. Came back and told Scott that I had popped it and he had me bring my wheel in and walked me through the process for no labor charge. I've been here a few times. Once, it was because I was fixing my girlfriend's bike and over-torqued the pinch bolt on her old, old brakes, and was desperate to either replace the bolt or get a new set of calipers. Scott rummaged around in the back for a while and found a bolt from an old set of Dia-Compe brakes that worked on the Shimano set on my gf's 1980s bike. I insisted on paying for the amount of time spent rummaging. Another time, it was because I (neurotically) needed to know whether I should get my wheel hubs serviced. They felt how the wheels were spinning and said 'nah, not yet.' This morning, it was because my crank arms and pedals have been feeling kind of weird lately. I rode the bike in, told Scott what was up, and he took it out on a test ride to see if he could feel what I was talking about. Turns out it was the pedals, and not, as I was fearing, the bottom bracket. This shop has always treated me well. They've been respectful and not mechanic-splainy like some other places I've been to in the Mission Hills area. I have *never* walked out of MJ's feeling like someone tried to swindle me because I have a lady-body. I have always felt like they took the time to figure out how to help me - they've gone above and beyond, in some instances. And it's never been expensive. I also appreciate that they support local cycling events and advocacy through BikeSD. San Diego has the weather to be a world-class cycling city, and it's great when local bike shops support organizations that are trying to help that happen. Thanks MJ's! I've been to MJ's several times and give them 10 stars!!! I brought my bike in recently with a flat tire and they changed it while sharing some info on products, etc. And then the same tire went flat this week and they inspected it and felt it might have been a manufacturer defect and so they changed the tire and did not charge me at all - not for parts nor service. This is an outstanding and fair shop with knowledgable and passionate people working there. I love this place! read more

Above and beyond the call of duty -- Jes was fantastic. The broken handlebars on my tandem needed to be replaced. She took the time to carefully measure the size and shape and ordered two models so I could choose. She was great about communications; she notified me as soon as the parts arrived. The repair was completed with expert care and attention, at a very low price. The bike had some other maintenance needs that could be better handled by a shop familiar with the particular type of electric motor it has installed. Jes even took the trouble to call and vet another bike shop in town that is certified for that type of motor. They take customer service to a whole other level. Helped me find the right size tube for my stroller then replaced it and filled the other tires at no charge.

I brought my bike in to have them take a look at my gears who were shifting on their own. The technician (don't know his name) examined my bike and explained that it was a simple fix (screw tightening) and showed me how to care for it so I didn't have to come back in. He also explained how my gears changed--because I have an 80s bike--and how my shifter loosens up over time. He also lubed my chain and cleaned it. I know that all these things are small but he was not going to charge me at all when I feel a lot of places would. The fact that he spent some time with me to explain how my bike works and how I could maintain it made me feel great and not look some idiot who didn't know about bikes. Okay, let's start with the co owners, Jess and Scott. Seriously top notch, hard working, honest people. Very easy to talk to as well as super knowledgeable about all things bikes and cycling. I brought in an older (1970s era) Italian made Bianchi road bike (aka Sweet Pink) for them to tune up and possibly sell on consignment. It wasn't in the greatest of shape and I had no idea what it was worth. Ill skip all of the gory details and hit you with the facts: 1) Scott immediately knew what it was and its value 2) he did NOT try to swindle or bamboozle me in any way 3) he tuned it up and fixed little stuff here and there for a VERY reasonable price and 4) Sweet Pink (although still for sale) looks and rides better than she ever has since iv'e owned her! Also, Jess, while Scott was rocking out my mountain bike with new bars and pedals and whatnot (so i'm addicted now, thats cool...) Jess turned out 03 repair jobs! 02 of which were walk ins off the street! These two? They are awesome. Go nowhere else and give no one else your hard earned cash for your two wheeled love.
