Better than 3 stars, but not quite a 4 in my book. I was kinda iffy about giving this place a try because it doesn't look very good from the outside. It's just a little hole in the wall between Boomer Jack's and Jason's Deli, but I really love sushi and I live in the apartments right behind this strip mall, so I HAD to find out if the food was good. To my surprise, I really liked it, and at one point I was ordering food here once a week for a long time. Like Jen D said, the parking is horrible. They have several (maybe 8?) parking spots reserved for their customers, so it makes parking a lot more bearable if one of those spots is open. As for service, it's so up and down. There are a few girls who have been there for a while who are VERY sweet. These girls know me when I come in, and they know my order. On the flipside, there were a couple of girls there for a while who were rude and very stupid. Thankfully, I haven't seen them for a while. At the same time, the food has had a couple of hiccups too. There was a point where the food was bad for a few months and I swore off ever going back. I was so embarrassed once because I had been telling a friend of mine for a long time about how great the food was, and we went one evening for dinner. Unfortunately, I hadn't been there in a while and didn't know the food had gone to hell. It was almost inedible... and my friend was like, "THIS is the great sushi you were talking about?" Since then, they've fixed whatever the problem was, and now it's back to being the same great sushi. My recommendations: Samurai roll (tuna and crab, topped w/ salmon) and spicy crunch roll (tempura shrimp and crab, topped w/ spicy tuna and crunchies), my two favorites. I personally hated the MK Roll (yellow tail, salmon, tuna, snapper, shrimp, wrapped in cucumber), so I steer clear of that one. The tempura is AWESOME. Strip Mall Sushi that it is shared with two douchey bars, and it still gets 4 stars? Absolutely! There are a ton of choices, the service has been very good, except they pronounce my name 'Kobe'. I do look like a tall talented black basketball player so its understandable. I really like that they have authentic Asian beers. So, my expectations might be super inflated but I loved this place. I sat at the bar and ordered edamame (3.50) and miso soup(1.50) to start - almost filled my sad and shrinking tummy:( I had to have some sashimi and decided on the Smoked Salmon (10.50) and that is where my love for life kicked in! My taste buds sparkled and I new life would go on despite the sadness I have experienced camping out at the Hospital while my Daddy heals! I am not big on desserts but my spirit was so uplifted that I decided to indulge in some Green Tea Ice Cream and a good decision it was! I love this place normally. The food is good, the service staff is pleasant and for the most part competent. But the last few times we have visited there has been an issue either with order confusion or lack of timely service. Tonight I called and they said it would be a 30 minute wait so I timed myself to get there at 30 minutes, it's now been another 20 and they still haven't gotten to my take out order. I have found that if they say "a few more minutes" then they mean 15-30. And if tonight is any indication, when they say "30 minute wait" they mean an hour. They always apologize profusely and offer you a drink but after a while that gets irritating. Having said that, there is a reason this place is so popular. They have really good sushi! read more

MK would have received a 4-star for their food, but because the service my sister and I received was over and above what we expected from a strip-mall sushi restaurant...they earn a full 5 STARS! My sister and I were going to go to Baatar Mongolian BBQ off the 183 for dinner a few nights ago and they were CLOSED! She had never had Mongo BBQ so we were really disappointed. However, it was one unfortunate event that led to a pretty fortunate one, now that we think of it. So I asked her what she wanted and she said "sushi!". So off we go on our crazy-freeway-construction adventure in search of a satisfying sushi dinner. Right as we were finally able to get back onto the freeway....there it was. "MK's Sushi". We could see the yellow and red sign in a strip mall among other interesting restaurants/bars. We then decided to take the next exit and made our way into the restaurant. I didn't expect much from the outside, but the inside is actually REALLY nice! It's cozy, with a little bit of a romantic ambiance due to the soft lighting and Asian-inspired decor. LOVE it! Finally a strip mall restaurant that doesn't look like a hole-in-the-wall! We ordered the Philadelphia Roll, the Las Vegas Roll and the Soft Shell Crab Roll and it was DELICIOUS! Probably one of the BEST sushi dishes I've had in a while! My sister pointed out that they gave her much more Smoked Salmon in the Philadelphia Roll than any other sushi restaurant she's had it at. This was a plus! The amount of eel, avocado, and soft shell crab in the other rolls was also to be noted! They are definitely NOT stingy with their ingredients. So we had 3 Rolls and it came out to be close to $30 dollars. Not bad for the quality and taste! We had amazing service the whole meal. The waitresses were kind, helpful and very patient. They kept checking in to see how our dinner was and offered water even when we were almost finished with our meal. To top it all off, they even gave us a very yummy complimentary dessert! Whipped cream with fresh strawberries and orange slices! It was fantastic! This may have been because there was a crazy drunk customer who walked in, sat next to us and kept bothering us with questions. They probably gave us the dessert as an apology for his behavior. :) Overall, it's a great hidden gem for sushi and we'll surely be back! read more

Well. I returned to MK Sushi tonight to take my daughter to try sushi for her first time and as my Valentine's Day date. If you read my other review of this place, you'll see I liked it very much and that's why I came here tonight. They closed at 10 tonight and man were they in a rush to get out. The food was good as usual, but the uncomfortableness they made us feel to leave was inexcusable. At 10 on the nose, they had put all the chairs on the tables, except ours, and actually turned out the lights in the dinning room. I've worked on restaurants before and the proper way is that you wait until the last table is done before cleaning and turning out the lights. Thank God I wasn't here with a date I was trying to impress, I would've been very embarrassed. I am very disappointed in MK Sushi and quite frankly, after spending $100+ I am insulted. Go here early in the evening if you go here. Do not go in the last hour they are open (we came in at 9:10). You will be made to feel as if you are unwelcome and it really leaves a bad taste in your mouth in what would've been another 4 star rating. I don't think I'll be back. read more

Bad food. Misoyaki black cod? Not misoyaki style (just slathered in a sugary white miso syrup AFTER cooking) and not black cod! Misoyaki is a sweet miso marinaded fish that is grilled without a thick coating of miso. I informed the manager that it definitely wasn't black cod aka butterfish aka sablefish (I'm a marine biologist and lived in Japan for 4 years) but she argued that it said "black cod" on the box. Well, then your chef is an idiot for not realizing this is just regular cod, basa, or some other crap fish that isn't worthy of being sold at $17 a filet. Sent it away and refused to pay for it. Sushi was almost passable, the rice actually being edible. If presentation matters to you (doesn't matter much to me) steer clear, it's not pretty. Bad service. They didn't come around to refill my iced tea until I asked for a check. The waiter awkwardly stood in my way as I tried to sit down in the booth, the pause was so long and awkward, I visualized myself shoving him out of the way or just sitting down next to my girl and then relocating after he left. Moral of the story, I won't be trying non-Japanese owned sushi bars anymore if I have the choice. I have a special dark place in my heart for restaurants that will sell an imitation of a dish to make money to unsuspecting customers, rather than master a dish and sell it to attract customers. I've been twice - both times on a Saturday during Happy Hour. They have an amazing drink menu with great prices. During my first visit, I had my first sake bomb which was a unique experience and I have to do that one again! Both times I had the spicy tuna roll (this is the only seafood I eat) and it was fantastic! I also tried miso soup for the first time. Where has this soup been? Wow! So delicious! Never had Sushi so was brought here. Now I am hooked. The portions are a very good size with proper portion of meat. The FIRECRACKER roll was excellent. Then had the crunchy shrimp tempura which was very good as well. The rolls had an excellent mix where one flavor did not over power another. The pieces are large enough that you can easily take a bite or two out of one and not need to put it all in your mouth. Sat at the bar and the guys working it are great. Funny, ask about the Chow puppy or ask about the ASSpirin he needed for his hangover. They entertained, suggested well, offered some different sauces to try and I really had a great time. The Wasabi was not too spicy, ginger nice and fresh. The decor is nice, simple and clean, very Asian. Plenty of room at the bar. Tables are small so if you bring a group you will need to put several together. Though I'm sure kids are welcome it didn't seem like a place for them. It was about a third full and seemed to stay that way so not sure it gets crowded. Saw them prepare several takeout orders quick simple and easy. The wine is a bit too pricey. Suggest a Saki Bomb instead. Not sure how the prices for the sushi compare to other sushi bars but seemed worth it for the quality and portion size. Restrooms were very very clean and looked great. Not ornate, but tastefully decorated. Large parking lot because of the mall, so its shared with a few places but never had a problem finding a spot. Don't need to park next to the place. read more

So pretty much all of 2016 this place was the best sushi we had tried in all of DFW. Some of the best smoked salmon sashimi I have ever had. Great rolls and reasonably priced. Service was always great and the staff was always attentive. Now the reason for the 3 star review. The last two times we came here the experiences were bad and worse. The first experience equates to poor service, lost orders, then the wrong order. We were greatly disappointed. We gave it about a month and tried again tonight. We spoke with the hostess and seated ourselves at the sushi bar. They were quite busy but after 10 minutes (I actually timed it) of waiting no one remotely seemed interested in helping us. So we stood up and walked out. Not to say we were regulars here but the staff recognizes us, to get looks but no service is an insult. Great sushi! We got our usual - tempura veggies, ahi tuna tower, and a roll - firecracker roll. Two glasses of Pinot Grigio to go with dinner. Service is fantastic - team approach so before you are done all of the wait staff will have helped you. Check out the sushi chefs - they are great to watch. My fiance and I are sushi fanatics. We're some of those CRAZY, southern California transplants (so in addition to being completely bat-shit) we're also pretty high brow snobs about our raw fish. The first time we tried this place, we were really impressed. Some really great rolls, and a terrific flavor. Unfortunately on our 2nd visit, there was quite a drop off. I noticed on the first bite on my first piece that the fish was quite a long way off of fresh. My fiance noticed a few problems with her rolls as well. Against our better judgment, we finished our plates. The next 3 hours after I got home were quite the blur. I had heard people say that bad sushi is the worst kind of food poisoning. Holy smokes, I had no idea until that night and I can safely say that all of the horror stories of kicking up bad sushi are 100% true. We won't be back. There's honestly no excuse why anyone would serve unfresh raw fish and then not follow thru with dishing it to people. It's not worth the public health concern of it. I used to come here pretty often. Used to. Then, I received what was probably the worst service of my life. I came here with a group of four while the restaurant was still almost empty. I don't want to sound racist or weird or mean here, but our server immediately bugged me with her fake accent when listing menu items. And when I say fake accent, I mean she was saying "Lainbow Loll" even though she spoke to us without an accent the rest of the time. As an Asian American, I totally found that offensive. We all wrote down our sushi orders on separate sheets except for me and my boyfriend, who were paying together. I ordered a mango roll, a calamari roll, some california rolls, and a shrimp tempura roll. I ended up with only the california rolls for my boyfriend and a shrimp tempura roll for myself. Apparently, they had put my calamari roll on my friend's plate and he didn't even notice and ate the whole thing. My mango roll? They completely forgot it. My server didn't even take care of the problem; she sent someone else to do it. She had no other tables. She couldn't have been training, as she had been my server months before. I was not reimbursed for the calamari roll which was ON A SEPARATE SHEET! Why would they go on the same plate?! We weren't paying together! Terrible experience and a waste of money. Not going to even go into depth about how poor the quality of food was here, it doesn't even warrant that much respect. The rice was overly sticky and too cold (obviously been sitting for a while). Very happy with MKs. Great service, attentive staff and a great menu. The happy hour portions are the same as the normal appetizer portions but a lower price. The seating is a mix of booths, tables and bar. With plenty of TVs and privacy if you want it. Recommend the Crab appetizer, the Shrimp Shumai and the the house salad especially.
