I'd been wanting to try this spot for a while and finally made an excuse to stop by after dinner for dessert. One thing that stood out right away is that they stay open late until 9 PM every day, which is rare for a donut shop that makes everything in-house. Of course, coming at night meant that some of the best-sellers, like the French crullers, were already gone, but I was still able to grab an apple fritter, a Boston cream donut, and a crumb-style donut. The prices here are very affordable, especially considering the donuts are freshly made. Parking is mostly metered spots out front, but if you drive into the side streets, you can find free parking. Inside, there are some tables if you want to sit and enjoy your donuts, and they also serve sandwiches. A fun little touch is the instant ramen shelf, which gives the place a bit of character. The lady running the shop was incredibly kind and friendly, with a warm smile that made the visit even better. She took the time to chat and was very welcoming, which gave the place a comforting, neighborhood feel. Out of the ones I tried, the apple fritter stood out the most--it had a great balance of crispy edges and soft, doughy inside with a nice glaze. The crumb donut was incredibly light and fluffy, with a sweet, crumbly coating that added just the right amount of texture. The Boston cream donut had an airy texture with a strong vanilla custard filling. I didn't care much for the chocolate glaze on top, as it wasn't as rich as I would've liked, but the filling inside made up for it. Overall, I enjoyed what I tried and definitely plan to come back in the morning to get a fresh French cruller. Got an assortment of 18 classic donuts that looked pretty appetizing - properly raised and not over glazed. I was very disappointed. The guy told me he had fresh hot donuts specifically the sugar and chocolate ones. He seemed friendly and I believed him. I took a bite without thinking into the most stale mediocre donut. I could instantly tell the fryer oil hasn't been changed in a while coming from having a family business. ML donuts a.k.a golden donuts is a classic local donut hole to this neighborhood creating all their specialties in-house and are constantly pumping out new batches during open hours. I find on my trips that the variety of their available stock varies widely so I typically ask them for their freshest out-of-the-fryer donut & a cup of coffee which has worked out well for me so far to date. The business is family owned, having being run by the family with occasional part-timers. What's better than checking into your airbnb and seeing (via your yelp app) that less than two blocks away is a donut shop? I could not have been happier... and this was even before we walked into the shop. During out next visit I tried an glazed old fashion and it was everything an old fashioned should be - cakey with that punch of sour cream in the dough and then all that glorious glaze on top to balance it all out. If they have it - get the MAPLE OLD FASHIONED. That hint of maple is ahhhmazing. And they don't skimp on the glaze. Of course - this spot offers up more than just donuts but I honestly don't remember what else was on the menu b/c I saw donuts and went all Homer Simpson. I did have coffee with my donuts though! I'm so not a coffee drinker but I picked up a cup each morning b/c their hazelnut coffee was really good. Get a cup to go, fo sho. The only bad news is that one fritter could comfortably feed 8 people, but I eat the whole thing anyway. I read some of the complaints elsewhere in Yelp and I have never experienced any of them. As in all donut stores everywhere, this is a great business for first generation immigrants, so a big smile never hurts when communicating.
