There are a variety of options for people to choose from depending on their preferences. Nothing too mind blowing however, which is totally fine! Sometimes you just need a simple sandwich. This was one of those personal great finds and by accident. I was really going to one of my regular Chinese restaurants and it happened that they were closed on that day and as I was walking back to my car, I gave the Garden House Cafe a second look and decided I'd give it a try. I checked out the menu and I opted for the bacon and egg sandwich option and asked the lady to use croissant instead of their usual. She was more than accommodating. The sandwich was very good, but it was the whole atmosphere that compelled me to write this review. The interior was old school coffee house darkish, but it felt quaint and cozy comfortable. Some folks were busy with laptops as they worked away given they have free WiFi access there. But what sold me on the place was the outdoor patio/garden-like dining area, quite Eden-ish in tranquility as I settled in for one of the most relaxing midmorning brunch I've had in a long time. I felt frustrated. I went in to put my bags down then the lady yelled at me to order first. There was a goofy guy with a dog standing there for about ten minutes and I wanted to order after he left. I walked around out front and when he finally finished after ten minutes I went to the counter but at this time she was staring at a calculator. The lady working here is very nice, I've been here a few times in the past. The issue is she needs help during the morning when it tends to be a little bit more busy. Garden House is a converted house, and even has an outside area (on the chance that it's sunny or warm). The staff is always courteous and helpful. The peeling, vinyl seat covers give this a dowdy feeling, and the low light isn't inviting. I appreciated the wifi, but it's not a strong signal. So i had a ton of misgivings when I first arrived at the cafe. There was a huge line, the owner was clearly overwhelmed, and she was having difficulty taking orders. I wanted to leave bc one of our friends was getting annoyed and frustrated bc the owner couldn't process his venmo payment due to the weak wifi. We stayed against my better judgment and I paid the price. I ordered the grilled eggplant sub and it was not only soggy and underwhelming, it was also tiny. It was a complete waste of money. My boyfriend and I wanted to go on a Black Friday hike nearby and this was one of the few places opened and I'm so glad we chose this spot. You walk in and you get greeted by two sweet women, they seem like a mother and daughter. They're both incredibly friendly and patient. Eventually I get my two sandwiches, two medium Roma sandwiches on a French roll, and I leave. When my boyfriend and I finally ate our sandwiches in the middle of our hike, we were pleasantly surprised. The sandwiches had so much flavor and suddenly I realized all the other sandwiches I've ever tried don't taste quite like these. Cozy neighborhood place. Part of the charm is the mismatched furniture, the locals who seem to come here every single day, the irregular portion sizes, the fact that they only accept cash. We came with another couple and they ordered separately. The food took a while to arrive, so we kept going up to the counter to check and the lady there said, "I'll bring your food to you." And she did for the other couple's food, so then we were waiting for our food. When it hadn't come after 30 minutes we went up to the counter and a different lady admonished us for not coming up to pick up our food at the counter -- the had been calling the order and we couldn't hear because we were sitting in the back and we thought the system was that they would bring your food. So that's part of the charm. Portion sizes are quite uneven. For example, I ordered a ham, egg, and spinach sandwich on wheat bread and my friend ordered a ham, egg and spinach sandwich on English muffin (same price) and I swear I got about twice as much filling as he did, presumably because wheat bread has more surface area. Check out the picture and decide for yourself. The salad was pretty good, but also pretty basic and I wasn't a huge fan of the deli meat and cheese on top. read more
