Really nice folks and great donuts. I am addicted to the apple fritter, which they do exceedingly well. The only bad news is that one fritter could comfortably feed 8 people, but I eat the whole thing anyway. I read some of the complaints elsewhere in Yelp and I have never experienced any of them. As in all donut stores everywhere, this is a great business for first generation immigrants, so a big smile never hurts when communicating. Besides, how can you not be happy with such a wonderful smell? Coffee is always fresh. Usually a number of blends to choose from. Here's one more telling fact: you always see police officers in here. 1. Doughnuts here have the taste like they have been cooked in Multiple Use OLD OIL. 2. They also are dry which I'm guessing are the doughnuts that did not sell the previous day. ALSO, I have personally seen the lady behind the counter put the fresh ones up and still "knowingly" serve the old ones 1st to customers and gets an eye rolling attitude if your asking for fresh ones. Apple fritter and coffee for $4.00; that's a great deal in San Francisco. The fritter's crust was crunchy with moist inside. It was not overly sweet lThe environment is a typical donut establishment. I recommend taking a seat near window and people watch. Great for late night fun inexpensive deserts and will not break the bank. Woke up 6am just to get their apple friiter and it was worth it. I can relax with a decent latte at any joint (Peet's, Royal Grounds) all the way down to my fave place on Geary that is filled with senior gentlemen discussing their next game loudly in Chinese. The counters face the street for amusing people observing and the most important thing of all: thick fluffy donuts that keep my latte and myself hot company. I have a feeling the proprietor of this shop already knows me by my usual ridiculous request of three Buttermilk loaves each time I stop in. I love them here. The perfect amount of glaze and the loaves are thick and moist fluff on the inside, slightly crunchy on the outside. Does it deserve the moniker of "golden" donut? I dunno about all that. Some of there were golden brown, if that's what they mean. Otherwise, let's just say that it's a terrific neighborhood bakery with donuts, coffee, and all the things you'd like to see at a donut shop from the sprinkles down to the cinnamon. This tidy spot is right on Geary, and as I spend a decent amount of time in this neighborhood these days, I've got to say that it's comforting knowing that it's there. That anytime I get a hankering for a donut I can make my way over to pick up a crueller, or an old fashioned (one of my faves) or perhaps a chocolate raised (middle of the road). I usually come here if I'm in a rush and need coffee and food fast. Their coffee is always fresh and good in the morning. I always get the egg and cheese bagel. Wish they had more bagel and breakfast options. The one thing I don't like is that they only take cash. I could see if they only take cash if it's under a certain amount ... but it's almost 2019 and a lot of people don't carry cash with them. I usually get a chocolate glazed yeast raised donut, everywhere i go. It looks so simple, but it's not really easy to make. This one looked really big and fluffy, as did their other donuts. I stumbled into the shop during a ritalin induced study session needing to raise my taste buds from dead and I bought several donuts hoping they would be at least... not stale. To my surprise they were not only fresh but delicious. I like to wonder in mid day and buy several, and it's also cool that they leave the donuts that need filling unfilled until you tell them you want one. They will give you the custard or jelly option. This is hands down the BEST DONUT SPOT IN SF (sorry, Bob's Donuts is officially overrated). The Golden Donut is a glaze- and sugar-donut lover's heaven! You should go when they are hot & fresh. I don't like my donuts too sweet, and this place nails it with the perfect amount of sugar. The dough is so light, fluffy, and eggy...it seriously just melts in your mouth (especially with the hot glaze)! And I must comment on the donuts even when they are not fresh -- they're still amazing! They don't get hard and soggy like most day-old donuts from other shops. I don't know how these things are made -- but it is life changing. I used to come here all the time when I was younger w my grandpa. As I left dinner on a Saturday night and saw this establishment still standing after so many years I convinced my husband to make a pit stop for some donuts on the way home. I got my childhood fav white donut w sprinkles and hubby got an apple fritter. Both were surprisingly good given we were there at around 10:30p. Sprinkled donut was soft and not too sweet, apple fritter was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. 4 stars for the donuts and an extra star for the sentimental value this place has for me.
