I got a glazed donut and chocolate frosting donut all for just a few bucks, and I was back out to see the park in a minute. I have been on a quest in my neighborhood to find quality, espresso, coffee. you would think it would be fairly easy with the plethora of coffee shops available in the upper Haight. But it seems most coffee is too citrusy these days. Either from over roasting or roasting too quickly. Anyway, happy donuts has the best, the very best espresso coffee in the upper Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. A great stop for a classic donut (or 3 in my case lol) and some coffee for your walk around Golden Gate Park. While the rainy day was not as fun, the donuts were exactly what we were craving. I went with a Chocolate Bar, a regular Chocolate donut, and a Sugar donut. My wife had the donut holes and a Mocha. I've never had the donuts. The sodas are expensive, and the juices are about what you'd expect. I really don't understand why they close so early. Coke-product-only fountain drinks, and the place can be a huge mess or really clean depending on who's working. There's one employee who talks on her phone a lot while she's making change. Great, INCREDIBLY cheap coffee and bagels. I am not much of a donut lover, but they look like pretty standard coffee shop donuts. My favortie part about coming here in the morning? The 2 incredibly sweet women who work behind the counter. They're so flippin' nice, like you want to roll them up in a tortilla and eat them kind of nice. Happy Donuts is a place that is just a bit above average - and that is mainly because the place is a bargain. They open nice and early, usually by 7-8am on weekdays - and it's a great place to grab a well brewed cup of coffee on your way to work. I've asked the owner to perhaps start selling whole bean coffee to customers - giving us another option, They promised it'd be considered - but I'm starting to doubt that it's going to happen. Happy Donuts is a perfect place to not only grab donuts - but also hot and cold sandwiches. They have a nice cooler stocked with all kinds of drinks - and while it's cash only - they have a fairly priced ATM right there in the store. Somehow they keep the rift rafts out of the place despite their location, which is an area where the allure of the Haight begins to be taken over by the perennial homeless in the neighborhood. The service is average, don't expect them to smile or be happy to serve you - but you can expect well made sandwiches and fairly priced pastries and donuts. I am giving it 4 stars because as a Haight resident - I can tell you that we need a place like this. Just like Power to the People Coffee on Masonic - it's worth the few block walk if you don't live near Schrader and Haight. The menu and probably awfully unhealthy donuts are a great addition to the hood. It would be a tragic loss if this place closed - so please support this locally owned business. read more

I had a bagel with cream cheese - again, it was a typical bagel with typical cream cheese. I didn't really see any happy donuts or happy people in the place, but I was happy that my bagel was toasted. I was not happy about spilling my coffee - and, yes I'm going to blame them - not my usual lack of grace. . . because the coffee area is just odd. They have glass coffee pots on burners on one counter, carafes at the other counter, and the coffee condiments at another. Damn! It's too early in the morning to have stumble around here and there for my coffee. Wait. Ugh I love this place. Every time I'm in the haight I ALWAYS have to stop by here for doughnuts. I arrived my first time around 2 in the afternoon yet their doughnuts tasted so fresh still. This donut place is located a block away from the Whole Foods Market. NOT HAPPY AT ALL! If Yelp let me, I would definitely give this place "O" stars for their rude, obnoxious, and did I say rude customer service. We walk in and there was only a couple that was sitting at the table enjoying their conversation and coffee. We noticed that one chocolate old fashion was left and a couple of donut holes to go. My BF and I walk in and he ordered the old fashion and looked at me asking me what I wanted so I asked for a 1/2 dozen of donut holes, not having cash we noticed that it was a $5 minimum to use a CC. She rang the old fashion up and gave us the total, we looked at each other and told her we were together. She said no I charged you separate. WHY would you do that?!?! Maybe I just happened to go on a very good day, but I honestly am clueless as to what alot of the yelpers are saying about Happy Donuts' apparently rude, unhappy, downtroddenly anti-social employees. You see, I love coffee. And I love pastries. And when I have both at the same time, it makes me pretty happy. And if Im getting a good cup of coffee with free refills to go with my several cheap, fresh, delicious donuts and pastries, all for a good price in a decent establishment in one of my favorite neighborhoods, that makes me VERY happy. Fitting then, I found such an experience at Happy Donuts. It was a great way to start my day, and I would gladly return. The woman behind the counter, granted, wasn't all bubbly and excitedly eager to take my order, but I would not describe her as glum, and I definitely was not treated rudely. She even patiently identified several of their donuts and pastries when I asked about them, and warned me about the heat and differences in strength of the coffee before I poured myself my first of several cups. I had ordered 2 of the sugar-raised donuts, one chocolate, and one caramel, a cinnamon twist, and a raspberry and cheese pastry. Not life changing, but I enjoyed them thoroughly. Especially considering how cheap they were. I also got to enjoy them at a window seat, which is always nice. Especially in the mornings. If I had to pick one thing to complain about, I suppose I would like to see a larger variety of baked goods on display, and maybe a nicer interior with some more decor. out of bed, no make-up, to international photo shoot in 15 minutes flat. hideous morning. rain. gloom. i said to myself, "i have a void in me only sugar, fat and caffeine can fill, where is the best place for that on haight st?" to make a long story short, boyfriend and i ended up as props in a photo shoot with a japanese supermodel at happy donuts. she was, appropriately, wearing a raincoat with her perfect hair, had a crew of ten and the japanese tourists screaming her name from across the street, although i can't remember what that was. but it really made me appreciate haight's happy donuts on an aesthetic and cultural level (they photographed her with coffee, newspaper and rainbow sprinkle donut that she would take bites of, but not actually eat). try the "buttermilk" donut, house speciality. also dig their coffee and the 80s trip they're on. i mean, apparently, it's world-famous. plus, it's so cheap, you can spring for an extra donut for your favorite spanger. read more
