I was looking for a specific fish I bought at Pet's Plus, so I figured--same owner, perhaps they split the fish? I called, and they said they had it. I arrived, and I must say it is a far ride for me, and a bit out of the way and hard to get to--I look at the fish and it's not even the same fish. So I decide to wander around to see how well equipped they are. Supplies- They have a wide array of items for sale, I'd say more than the other location. They also have pets other than fish--like birds and smaller mammals. I asked about planted fish tank information, but the one person I asked didn't know anything about that. You can definitely start a good tank with their supplies, and they even carry the Hagen Fluval at a lower price than I've seen online, which is really good because it's an excellent looking tank. Fish and Plants- This location definitely had different options than Pet's Plus. As others have said, the lighting in their tank area is terrible, I could barely read the names. Thankfully I could tell the fish inside, and matched up what I could read to the prices. This darkness would definitely deter me as a novice shopper. I was able to barter a deal with the salvinia. Still, seeing the wrong fish staring at me was disappointing, when I came looking for more of a specific fish. Service- I also had an interesting debate with a worker there about killifish, and the annual nature of the clown killifish--which doesn't die after several months, like other killies. You'd think a customer asking about such an unusual fish would have at least done some research--like I did--before trying to out 'info' me like that. It was another one of those 'I walked into a comic book store asking for Spider-man' stories. There are actually people who buy fish and know something about aquariums, people should keep that in mind. Conclusion- Okay, there is that musty smell and abundant moisture which any fish store will have. Their supply is pretty good. The service was iffy, since they questioned my knowledge about fish, didn't know about planted tanks, and mildly debated with me about another fish, after bringing me down there under the pretense that they had the fish I wanted. I'd probably suggest better lighting outside the fish tanks when the store is open, so people can actually shop. If I'm desperate for unique or different freshwater fish, I'll just wait for Pet's Plus to get more. read more

I thought I'd stop in and shop local based on a few recommendations. I definitely won't be back. The place is dirty.. filthy really. The floor is wet, the tanks are disgusting. There are "not for sale" signs on just about everything I was looking at. Their beta fish prices started at $20 and a huge portion of them were dead.. like it would be 3 in a row dead. Ridiculous. THIS REVIEW IS FOR TROPICAL FISH SHOPPING This place doesn't have a lot of good reviews, but honestly I've been going here for tropical fish for quite some time and I also have checked out at least five other shops (non-petco/petsmart types). This is your typical mom an pops shop that has plenty of cichlids and other tropical fish. On the mainland you'll see these place quite often but it is pretty rare on the islands. The good Most of the people here are very helpful and always ask if you need help. Some more than others, but most of them know a lot about fish. They have a good selection of tropical fish, which is kind of rare around here. (I've found fish here I haven't seen much elsewhere) Prices vary. Mostly good priced stuff, but sometimes certain items can be marked high for a reason unknown to me (possibly due to limited availability island wide) the in-between parking is usually not great, BUT they do have two stalls reserved for the shop which really helps. The bad relatively small store fish accessories are usually dusty and look like they haven't been touched in ages but usually functional. slightly junky/cluttered appearance all in all this place has been good to me. i've found fish related items here cheaper than many other places along with some variety. Currently, it might be the only carrying discus, exotic knives and other freshwater enthusiast favorites. Their prices reflect a small mark up of those available on Amazon.com, so I would opt to purchase locally through this shop if the item does not include Prime shipping. My search for a tiger salamander ended at Moanalua Pets where I purchased several firebelly newts as a child. I was ecstatic to find my pet of choice after calling around for several months. Actually, I didn't know Moanalua Pets was still open after all these decades, and was happy to revisit this nostalgic locations. Three employees assisted me during my visit and were very informative when I asked about pet care. They did not know proper care for their adult tiger salamander, however and were keeping it in an aquatic environment rather than a terrarium. As a result, I spent one day setting up a half aquarium set up more appropriate for newts (since I am used to caring for those), then the next overhauling it into a terrarium. I wish that I knew about that beforehand and I would have set the tank up properly. I'll definitely return to Moanalua Pets to browse their exotic fish collection and perhaps to buy one of their long custom tanks. read more

Cheap Stuff, Cheap Place Being an animal lover and owning multiple pets, feed and animal supplies are expensive when you need them weekly. I make my way to all of the pets stores from Kahala to Kapolei when i have the time to take notes on the prices and to just to check out pets. For the past 15 years, i have been coming to this pet store because they have very reasonably priced pet supplies. Compared to most pet stores, I find the best deals here. There feeder brine shrimps are really cheap and they have a bunch of cheap used tanks and cages. The tanks and cages are in good to bad condition, but the good condition ones are worth it!!! HUGE VARIETY OF EXOTIC FISH. I find the most expensive and exotic imported fish here all the time. I never seen some of them at any other pet stores but here. I love learning about all the new fish and different species that they have. They also are very cheap. I find that the prices for their fish here are way cheaper then all the other pet stores. The down fall occurs when it comes to their pet selection. The don't have a huge selections of mammal type of pets. I never saw a puppy, they normally have like 2 or 3 bunnies or guinea pigs and just a handful of birds. I feel like to mainly focus on their aquatic pets. They do have a lot of cheap toys, supplies and feed for all pets, but just not much pets. The location of the store is very convenient since there isn't any other pet store near them. There uses to be Pet's Discount, but it closed down. The nearest pet store to them is only for the military people, So they get a lot of customers in their area. It is not that busy in the late afternoons when I go, but the weekends are crazy. It is so hard to find parking on the weekend. There are just so many business and Ice Palace so parking could be a problem. The young guys that work their are pretty knowledgeable on their fish. I always ask them a bunch of questions and they are always willing to help. The Asian lady who is normally there is also very sweet. She is always asking if help with anything. If you want a pet, only come here for fish. If you want feed or supplies, this the best place!!!! read more

I really love pets stores like this one. The owner of this location also has one near Ward. He brings in some fish that are impossible to get anywhere else. Some people are turned off by the overcrowded nature of these Mom and pop pet stores however, I quite enjoy them. The fish selection and supplies are really what shines at this store. If you are on the hunt for other pet supplies then the selection is scarce. This store is extremely old and you can tell (doesn't bother me). I've been coming here since I was a little kid so I don't expect it to look like a petco or anything like that. Overall it's a great pet store if you are into fish. Just a review for their tropical fish and supplies. I love their selection of fish and tend to stop by often as they always have something interesting when they get new fish shipments. Fish prices are great..supply prices are mostly reasonable..Saw some negative reviews about the store being cramped..smelly..dirty tanks..etc.. Yes it's a small shop..and I would expect it to smell like aquarium water because why wouldn't it? Everytime I've been there the water in the tanks have been crystal clear.. And I've always received healthy fish from them..definitely cant say that from the big retail pet stores.. Moanalua Pets is a favorite stop of mine for aquarium items. Although their specialty is aquarium items, they do have things for all kinds of pets. I really like their fish selection. They have a variety that the big stores don't have. I usually go there to buy particular fish that I won't find elsewhere. Fish food prices are good. The only thing that's a neg there is the clutter. Not the most cheap but the best in assortment by far! From what I understand, their boss goes to Thailand a few times a year to bring these quality fighting fish back to Oahu. I was looking for fish, and boy did I get a huge selection of fish. Being an amateur pet fish owner my kids had just received a carnival comet fish. After trying to keep it alive in a makeshift container we opted for a medium sized bucket with a whisper filter. Flash forward 9 months and all the original fish died. So we decided to up our game and invest in a 15gal tank. We went here to buy, but ended up getting good advice about why all our fish died. The pump was too strong for the guppies, mollies, and other fish. Service was good. The guy who helped me was attentive and I saw him help at least three others with specific and detailed assistance. The amount of fish tanks were crazy and their fish looked happy and healthy. Their Betta selection is nuts. I didn't Spock out the entire place. Smell wasn't bad, typical pet store. First of all the store is very dark and dirty. The aisles are cramped and both the employees and several other customers have no respect when it comes to trying to get past you or respecting your personal space. The prices are gouged incredibly high for poor products, bought some stuff for my aquarium, went through the proper procedures and such, but whatever knock off aquarium products they sold killed my blue bolt shrimp and my live plants. I have the same exact same set up in a different tank without the items I bought from their store and it is thriving. I can not recommend this store to anyone for any reason. read more

The store is very crowded mainly sells fish supplies. As soon as I walked in, it held a heavy stench of animal urine and chemicals. The fish tanks are also very dirty and even have dead cockroaches floating in them, very classy. Their chameleons looked poor in health and very sick, they weren't active and they were very dark colored and frail. I'd recommend pet depot for a healthier selection in fish as well as chameleons. read more

I love coming to this place. The store is very clean, staffs are friendly and very knowledgeable of all. If you are into planted aquariums, then you should definitely come check them out. I wish I could give this place zero stars. The first word that comes to mind when thinking of this place is janky. My fiancee and I came to this store hoping to find a pet. They had 5 hairless guinea pigs that looked on the verge of death. A chincilla that looked super sick and a cat that was starved. When we walked in I walked through some gross film on the floor and was greeted with an odor that I could not name. We quickly made our way to the back to the animals. My fiancee was on the mark when he said "This is the type of place you go to get black market animals". I would not come here to buy animals they look like they are about to die or very sick. Came here for the first time a week ago because i needed more betta food and water conditioner. i wasn't able to browse around like i would like to because of covid, the owner only allowed people who are purchasing only to come in and get what they need and leave. I didn't get a chance to look around but from all of the things i could see in here, i was in love with their store. they had everything i need and want for my fish care needs, lol. When this whole covid thing finishes, i plan to come back and buy a lot of things from here, especially fish! I walked into the fish area but wasn't able to really look at the fish or anything so hopefully when life goes back to "normal" i can come back and check out their fishes. The crayfish I get from here keep dying! I notice that the water is pretty dirty in every single tank, and the store reeks. I am pretty sure at this point it may not be something with my tank and that it may have been the poor water quality that the crayfish was living in. All of the crayfish I have purchased from there die in 1 day. Not even exaggerating. I got some from Kalihi Pets and the crayfish from there are doing just fine. I've been shopping here since I was 10 years old. They have an amazingly large selection of fish especially types that are harder to get on the island. The owners get the fish in from overseas which is a ++. But they also get stock which are locally bred, which I think is so great. They have a lot of supplies that you need for your fish also. The only downfall is that they have few other pets like bunnies and a small selection of birds, chameleons and turtles. On the upside the staff is super friendly and helpful. The place is not the prettiest or biggest pet store but for that doesn't really matter if you really are just looking for good quality at a reasonable price. Parking is shared with the other stores in the area, but they have 5 designated stalls for their own customers right in front of the store. I'm always a satisfied customer here. read more

Located at the Stadium Mall shopping center (next to the Ice Palace). A few reserved parking spots directly out front and plenty of additional parking in the outer lot. Service has always been friendly, knowledgeable and not pushy. A few times I've had to wait to be helped but it's understandable with a small business. This is a tiny shop, aisles are a little tight but they are well stocked floor to ceiling with all sorts of aquarium type supplies so no complaints from me. They have a few cages in the back with birds and lizards. I have a small fish tank so I appreciate having a local store for the basic necessities and like to shop for new fish, they have a good selection as far as I'm concerned. I've never had a problem with the fish I purchase, they acclimate well to my tank with no causalities. read more

I have lived here for 6 years and this is the first time I visited Moanalua Pets. I just never knew they existed. I was referred here but the NEX staff since they no longer stock fish supplies. I was greeted by Chad who really helped me out. I wasn't sure what replacement pump for our fish tank I needed. I was looking to either replace the pump and filter, or just buy another fish tank kit. He didn't pressure me to go the more expensive route. Instead, he listened and gave me just what I needed. I chose a drop-in pump and motor and it worked out perfectly. It was $14! Chad knows what customer service is all about. He even took the pump out of the box and tested it for me. He was patient and professional. The store itself has a ton of fish supplies, new and used. Ever since I was little, I've loved coming to Moanalua Pets! I really love the mom-and-pop feeling of being in there and it's a refreshing change from corporate pet stores like Petco and Petsmart. They have a large assortment of freshwater fish with a diverse variety of species that I don't normally see in pet stores. The staff is very friendly and extremely knowledgable! Really great pet fish variety. They also have other animals you can check out. Last time i was there, they had some baby chicken and Jackson chameleons. My main interest with this shop is the fish though. Pea puffers were my priority as my other favorite fish stores did not carry them at the time. I also purchased some guppies since they have the best ones imo. My only gripe with this store is the cleanliness. It's crowded, dirty, and there are usually some dead or dying fish floating around the tanks. There are also some tanks not being used but have some dried brown crust along the glass. Makes you wonder about the quality of the fish. No matter though, you can't complain when they have a fish you are looking for. read more

Outstanding selection of tropical fish. The fish are vibrant and healthy. This is primarily a fish store and again has a huge selection of fish and a good selection of rare tropical fish. If you are like looking for fresh water tropical fish this is the place to go. Not so much of a selection of plants but that's not what this place is focused on. Only thing is this place is a little crowded/cramp so if there are a lot of customers you will be standing in someone's way for sure, but that's just really a minor issue. read more

At first I thought this pet store was like another pet store but i was wrong, it was a lot better. I am a fish/aquarium enthusiast and I love this place. They have almost everything from all sorts of fish food, aquarium supplies to different varieties of freshwater fish and plants at cheap prices. They also have turtles, water dogs (salamander), cray fish, and brine shrimp. And if you are not into fish, they also have dog/cat food and supplies, birds, hamsters, and bunnies. The bad thing about this store is its quite dirty and smelly, especially around the fishes and birds. But if you look past that, everything about this store is GREAT. This is one of the best pet stores around the island of Oahu. To start off the ship is very quaint and has many supplies and pets within. The options to pets are small, but the fish species vary way more. The prices for some fish are very reasonable like white clouds, zebra danios, common male Betta's, male and female guppies (not pairs) and many other fish. If you ask the manager he can talk to you about prices and can lower for expensive fish. Like guppie pairs. The guppie pair prices are quite high and not to my liking, but like I said they can negotiate to a lower price that you may like. Lastly, their downside it the clutter, dirty tanks, and OMG the roaches. It doesn't bother me but others might care. Customer service is the best there too. In conclusion though all of the downsides of the shop can't beat the pet store. Overall the place is relatively cheap and had kind workers and manager. I would come back again and a read more

So very disappointed in this place. Zero stars should be allowed. I nearly always prefer to shop/support local. The fish tanks are always filthy, all of the animals always look miserable(especially the birds). The pet products avail are average. The entire shop is dirty and just reeks of being unsanitary and unhealthy. I wish I could just rescue all of the animals. How they are in business, amazes me. I stop by occasionally just to look around, always hoping the place will get their act together. Never happens though. Now they got my other fish sick and all my fish now have white spots. Four of my fish already died. Called the owner of Moanalua Pets and he was no help at all. Did not offer reimbursement or any kind or apologetic words. BUYERS BEWARE when purchasing their fish! Fish tanks here looked filthy as well. I've been a long time supporter of moanalua pets. My dad and I have been shopping there for our fish for over 15 years. Recently I bought fish from them and upon going home I found 2 of them dead. I called the store and she told me to return the bag unopened. Upon returning the fish the owner accused me of squishing the fish by grabbing the corners. For years I payed a little more to support this store, but no longer. The service has gone down hill and the employees are not knowledgeable about their fish. Better to google info over listening to them. They told me angel fish were alright in a tetra tank. Stupidly I listened and quickly seen the angel eat 2 of my tetras. Do yourself a favor and buy fish here only if you want to save money on some of their sale fish. Other then that look elsewhere. read more

I love this store hidden in the corner. So many things to see. Brought all my grandchildren to walk and look around. They are always kind to the children. My grandchildren had to earn the right to visit Moanalua Pets by doing chores. They loved it. I would buy koi fish food to feed the fish and ducks at Moanalua Gardens Park. Two stars because you just can't not expect people to come in & ask you questions. I understand they're not FISH EXPERTS but sharpen up your ATTITUDE. If it weren't for customers supporting little business like this place with our money, you wouldn't be getting paid. I went there durning mid day for the first time and these boys were helpful, although we went last night and this one boy was just extremely rude. Such horrible customer service that I won't be coming back. We also had children with us & long story short he made our experience crap. Unfortunately I don't recommend this place because they're many better places to go. We spent $150 last night & the least we could have got was good service. read more
