I want to take this time to acknowledge the commendable customer service I received from Mark, Steve, and their team at Mobility Works Oakland. We had taken our van in because of a faulty door, that would not consistently open or close. Mobility Works did not fix the issue initially as expected. The door failed to work two days after we brought the van in. After calling Steve first thing Monday morning, he generously offered to have us bring the car in, on short notice, despite having a busy schedule that day. He knew we had a trip to go to and did his best to fix our issue in time for this travel. Despite some miscommunication about the work that needed to be done, Mark, Steve, and their team eventually rectified the situation, and fixed our issue in time for our trip. Cars are complicated, and the issue at hand may not always be fixed on first attempt. I genuinely and greatly appreciate Mark and Steve's desire to "make things right" and to have the customer's best interest at heart. Instead of doubling down, and shifting the blame on the customer, they did what was necessary to fix the issue, and were very friendly and gracious about it. We are very pleased with this part of the customer service, and would gladly recommend them to other consumers. read more

I had the opportunity to visit Mobility Works (wheelchair accessible vans) in Oakland. What an experience! This visit was for service on a van my daughter purchased there. The gentleman who handled the service was Steve Bustamante; I told him my concerns, he took notes, (very detailed notes), and asked me questions that brought up other concerns I hadn't thought of. He was obviously well versed in his job. The thing with these vans that have been altered (and I've owned a couple) they're all different with a multitude of things that could or will cause you headaches on the road--you'd like to avoid that, if you can. Well, I feel good putting my daughter in her van; it's her lifeline to the world--something able-bodied people don't think about. Two other people I had the pleasure of meeting were the people who were involved in the sale of this van--one gentleman was Honza Bunzel: very informed, knew the van, pointed out what we needed to know, wasn't in a rush, and gave my daughter some insight on how to be aware of pitfalls (particularly all the plastic trim on the outside skirts, etc.). Honza installed the docking station so my daughter could drive from her chair; he took the time to explain its operation and functions. The last person I dealt with was a gentleman named Mark Santos: he took care of one glitch, was more than happy to handle it, was personable, made sure things went well, and called the next day to make sure my daughter made it home with no issues. Service like this is rare in any industry--dealing with the disability community is not easy, but we did good with Mobility Works. read more

My gripe isn't so much about the people at Mobility Works but a product that they recommended and installed, a Bruno Swing Away ASL-275 scooter lift. It was installed on a 2014 Toyota Highlander SUV. Not a low car or small car. But within the first two years we had the lift in for repairs 5 times and paid $1,045 in lift repairs. The lift consistently drags over curbs, driveways, even speed bumps which causes damage that routinely needs to be repaired. One time it broke while we were 350 miles from home. The scooter had to be dismantled and stowed with luggage. That meant no room for our traveling companion. Luckily a friend offered to drive her the 350 miles home! read more

Do call for an appointment for the most prompt service. You will be treated with respect, kindness, and receive excellent advice for your individual situation. I don't know if they are still able to do this - but pre-pandemic for major work I would send my vehicle to them via AAA and they would personally drive it back to me and I live in a different county! Vehicle safety issue. In 2021 I had Mobility Works in Oakland install a set of hand controls (accel/brake) on my van. Within a couple months I reached out and told them I didn't feel like I had full braking power. I went to the shop and a technician checked out the brakes, he said everything was fine. I never felt great about it but I didn't have another vehicle to compare braking power against so I drove very conservatively/defensively. In October 2024, I had two near accidents related to lack of braking (freeway traffic jam and rolling into a 4-way intersection). I looked into the brake action more. It turns out the hand control/brake was hitting the dashboard before the pedal reached the floor. I told Mobility Works and they scheduled an appointment, they were able to adjust the hand controls to give much more braking power but a different part is needed to provide 100% brake power. They are going to charge me $350 to install the correct part even though they are the ones that installed the hand controls incorrectly in the first place. I drove an unsafe vehicle for three years and I could have been seriously hurt, I will pay another shop to install the correct part. Not them. Full disclosure, they installed a different set of hand controls on my other vehicle and there are no issues. read more

Took my ramped van in to get a routine service (everything was working fine), and the day after I get it back the ramp begins to fail. Then the chain to lower the vehicle just pops right off and causes problems on the road. It's not the only problem with the ramp, and it's not the first time problems start right after the van gets a check-up. After over a month calling and being transferred to a voicemail, in which NO ONE EVER calls back, I was willing to pay whatever the cost just to get the van fixed because I need it. I couldn't get an appointment to save my life, and even tried going to the actual office to make an appointment and was refused. I was told I had to call and make an appointment. I kept calling and nothing. I was told lies how messages were left on my phone, but there wasn't anything, I have voice messages dated back a year. No one ever left a message. Months later my van still isn't working right, and I still don't have an appointment, even after the GM assured it would be fixed. I have approached this with such patience and understanding. I know I don't have the only van that needs service in the Oakland East Bay Area, but this is HORRIBLE customer service and basic business organization. This can't be the only option to get a ramped van fixed in this area, it just can't be. There is no order or kindness from this company after you have a van and/or after the first couple of services. The business practices are alarming, and the government needs to step in for some checks and balances. Where is all the money going? You charge customers top prices, but then there seems to only be one customer service person and one mechanic at all times, despite a large population needing your help. Restructure this office please! Not sure how the others are doing, but the Mobility Works of Oakland is doing a HORRIBLE job. CORP Office = PLEASE help them... It was my first time renting a car in general. They were super helpful on the phone and I booked a car in advance. Picking up the van was easy and not all that longZ they offered to email application to get it done in advance but I don't have a printer. Now this is the fault of the company and not the staff but I knocked down a couple of stars because they recently stopped opening on the weekends and I had to rent the car for 3 days when I only needed it for one and it was pretty expensive. I'm on disability so I really don't have extra money to throw around plus I don't even drive. I needed it just for one night to go to a concert with the family. I encourage you to stay away from these people. I purchased a wheelchair lift from MobilityWorks and had it installed by them. They were nice when they were getting my money, but they were awful when the lift needed minor service. In less than 3 years, one of the parts broke. I understand things break. I do not blame them for that. I went to MobilityWorks to order the replacement part. They were awful. They were extremely slow, completely incompetent and totally dishonest. I suffered without my lift because of their delay and incompetence. The delay was bad enough, but the lies were even worse. They told me several different, conflicting stories about why the part did not arrive in a timely fashion. I had to call them every day. Each time, they told me a different story. I will never go near these people again. I encourage you to find someone else to help you with your needs. There are other places in the Bay Area that sell mobility aids. If you drive a few more exits on the freeway, you will save yourself a lot of grief. read more

Great place to rent a newer quality mobility van. Wanted to take my wheel-chair bound dad who is in hospice for a day trip and Mobility works had two vans available for rent. All I had to do was wheel him in the auto lowering ramp, tie chair down, and carry 5 passengers (incl driver) for a day trip. Great price and good service. read more

I do not like that I have to write this review but I feel like I need to. This company captalizes on making a profit off of disabled individuals who already are low income or do not have the means to survive. I reserved a rental because I had to take my friend to a chemotherapy app but was able to find a different way to get him there. This place is not open on the weekends and has very specific pickup and drop off times, because I did not leave a message of Friday I got charged 75 dollars. A late fee for calling in after 24 hours I get even though they are closed on weekends but 75 dollars thats insane for not even having the van!! The front desk person is VERY very nice and always tries to help. I know she is just doing her job. But the rental alone was 400 dollars for a two day period and my full coverage insurance was not enough they wanted me to pay 15 dollars a day on top of that. I do not know who owns this company but this wrong. My friend barely gets out of the house except for appointments. I wonder why? Because everything is so costly for someone who is already struggling! And this company does not help that. You have to have a ridiclous amount of money to rent, buy or fix anything that has to do with someone with a disability. After leaving Lilly numerous messages, she never called me back. I left a message on a supervisor's phone and he never called me back. I then got Lilly live on the phone. I came into the showroom (very clean I might add) and got to see first hand the top notch quality of customer service they provided. I was introduced to Roger as the Sales manager and he truly gave me a great experience during my visit. I was looking at a few vehicle chair lifts for a business and he gave me all the information I needed. I never felt pressure as if he was trying to force me into a sale, and his professional, friendly demeanor really diffused that initial feeling you get when you walk into a normal car dealership. I rented a van from mobility works in Oakland for about the same price as the private service. The van was spotless and almost brand new. Our experience with MobilityWorks in Oakland has been wonderful - we would give them 10 stars, if we could! We recently moved to this area and our wheelchair accessible van needed servicing twice over the past year. Both times it was easy and efficient to schedule an appointment, and we were given both excellent service and a very cordial welcome. I emphasize this because my disabled husband asked if he could closely observe the mechanics and technicians at work during the servicing, rather sitting in a waiting room. He was an engineer before his injuries and wanted to be able to ask questions and participate in the process as much as possible. Mark Santos and Val completely understood how important this was to us, and on both visits they made a special effort to welcome us. They introduced my husband to the service team, who took him behind-the-scenes so he could watch, and then communicated with him throughout the servicing. At every level, the MobilityWorks team members were not only highly competent, but also accommodating and compassionate, turning a routine procedure into a memorable experience! read more

My experiences with the service department at this Oakland CA location have been repeatedly disappointing. Most recently, I called to set up an appointment to have my son's EZLock system adjusted on the floorboard of the van. Because of his growth, the current set up is making the wheelchair unsafe in the van. I explained this to the receptionist on the phone. She assured me that Ivan, the service manager would return my call he never did. And, this has happened previously, where the service personnel, specifically Ivan, does not return calls. Our previous service call there was for the side door right by my son's wheelchair. The door got damaged and was not closing completely. Very unsafe. Mobility Works in Oakland charged me only $135 for the service performed but admitted that it didn't fully address the problem. Ivan said he would email me with auto body shops that he could recommend. He never did. I spoke with him on the phone a few days later and asked for the referrals. He said he would email them. He never did. My son's safety in his wheelchair in the van is very important to me. It seems that his safety and my business as a customer are NOT important to this Mobility Works location. We are now using Mobility Works in Santa Clara, and I am pleased with them, even though it is a further drive for us. read more

After much searching I found Mobility Works of Oakland, CA --- a company which would install a Braun ASL-325 scooter lift in my all-electric vehicle. Everyone with whom I came into contact at this facility was terrific. I felt they really cared about my getting what I really needed in the way of equipment and did their best with ordering, installation, and training. They do get busy and it can be a challenge to schedule an appointment which fits into both their and my calendars, but once the schedule is set they do their utmost to follow through. Wow what a great experience! Very classy and clean :) This place has many wheel chair accessible van options to choose from. They have over 900 used and new vans on line with more than 30 at the Oakland location to test drive. The staff is very informative, professional and caring. They also have many different types of hand controls to test out in the show room. The service department looked well organized and up to speed with the latest tools and technology to make any repair on the many types of lifts, ramps and Mobil equipment installed. They also have a very comfortable waiting area while repairs are completed with a TV and snacks. If you can't find a van to purchase don't worry they also have a wheel chair accessible vans to rent.
