MoBowl was one of the food trucks offering food at the Bay Area Dragon Boat races in Foster City today and their menu sounded good, so I decided to give them a try. I wasn't disappointed! I had the grilled chicken with garlic rice and a side salad. At first thought, the portions looked rather small, but upon eating everything, it was the perfect amount. I finished everything and was quite satisfied. The grilled chicken slices were tender and moist and the sauce on both the garlic rice and the chicken was delicious; a little sweet with a hint of heat. Now that the new/novel feeling of food trucks has come and gone, it's not hard for me to see why some of my friends have lost their enthusiasm for them. The food can be gimmicky, the lines can get long, some are way overhyped, they can be pricey...totally get it. However, while I certainly don't disagree, I have to say - I'm still a fan! Whenever I see one I've yet to try, I'm (almost) always down to check them out. Not to mention the fact that the sheer number of them spread around the Financial District and SoMa always makes it easy to find something new to Yelp about...ha! Before stumbling across MoBowl, I actually knew nothing about these guys. After looking them up on Yelp and scrolling through their photos, though, it didn't take me long to get genuinely excited about trying them out. The menu seems simple, but they've got plenty of options - first choose one (or two) of the eight proteins they have to offer, then two of their five sides. When it's the only option at Barebottle, I guess it's ok. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to go eat here. Btw, saw some people bring Jack in the Box / other take out themselves to Bare Bottle. So genius! I wish I thought of that. Each bowl comes w two bases (choice of salad, rice, fries or garlic noodles +$1) Rather than getting 2 different bowls, I ended up getting a super bowl by adding an extra protein for $5 to my bowl. I got fries and garlic noodles as the base, and the fried chicken and brussel sprouts and cauliflower as the mains. It was mostly enough food for two people to share. My gripes: 1) I didn't ask for an egg, but they added one (and I later saw they charged me $1.50 for it anyways). I didn't end up contesting it and just ate it. Honestly don't think it added much to the bowl in this case. 2) Each individual flavor was not great / quality, and together in one bowl, it was too much sauce and salty. 3) Their operations are slow... the line is not long or non existent, but they still end up taking forever to make the food or even to take my order. They seemed to just have a lot of other stuff to do in between orders, so I don't know how they would be able to handle a large crowd at all. The dislike would be with the 5 spice pulled pork, seasoning wise it was decent nothing over powering each other especially with the white rice and the garlic noodle, sadly the meat was slightly dense and dry, maybe it is because I ordered later in the day around 1pm but hey dense is clear indication that the meat has been sitting out for awhile. Very reminiscent of the asian ghetto food in Berkeley. Dank, cheap, and fast. If you like heavily seasoned food, this place isn't bad, but the prices seem high for the type of food they serve (panda express/star wok/americanized asian food). I read that they were known for their 5-spice pulled pork so that's what I got. You are supposed to choose 2 sides with the meal so I chose salad and fries. Ended up paying $11 but I don't think the meal is worth any more than $7. First off, their house sauce has a watery base (probably soy sauce) which floods the bottom of the box and it's rather salty and overwhelming with the salad. The fries are your regular frozen bulk fries-some of which were not fully cooked and cold on the inside and they soak up flavor from the salad sauce and the pork (bleh). The pulled pork was disappointing. I had expected some juicy and spice-infused pork but this pork was a bit dry, way too sweet, and the only juice came from the oil/sauce(unknown what kind of sauce it was). They might have had added ground up spices (anise, cinnamon, cloves, pepper) but with all the other seasoning they added (sugar for sure), I couldn't really understand what I was tasting other than heavily spiced pork. To kick off a milestone at our company, we were fortunate enough to have MoBowl cater our company lunch. As much as I wanted to have a buffet of Mobowl, we were only limited to certain items. Some of the items aren't listed on their regular menu. This truck reminded me of Hiyaaa!!, so I was quite excited to try it. You pick from differently seasoned proteins served over your choice of carbs. My favorite item from Hiyaaa!! is the spicy fried chicken bites over fries, so I got the same thing here as a benchmark comparison. Sadly, it was very much "Meh. I've experienced better.", hence the 2 stars. Sweet & Spicy Fried Chicken: The chicken was really dense and tough. Pretty much the perfect crowd pleaser one size fits all kind of Asian style "put your own bowl together in a rectangular earth friendly recyclable container" kind of food truck. Is it still a bowl if it is not round, but rectangular, but has a lid? :-o Isn't that a box? Like, MoBox? Hong Kongers would be very particular with this...takeout square or rectangular containers are called boxes in HK. Plate lunches with rice and proteins (salad or greens if you are lucky) are called "rice boxes" in HK. Even takeout roasties over rice are called "rice boxes"... In fact, very perfect for Silicon Valley high tech pirate ship companies (where the employees are fondly referred to as high tech slaves) for catering. Because in that medley of ship crew, you have vegetarians who can single handedly reduce your dining options for team lunches (which are never a foodie kind of thing, unless they end up at some killer Mediterranean restaurant like Dish Dash but that's rare). But in that crew the meatatarians also need their carbs n' animal proteins, where MoBowl does the job in a jiff with it. The food is actually pretty decent, but as Shannon and Rob have already put it, not much of a wow factor. Your best bet is to get the richer flavored carbs and proteins...whether it be bbq, curry, garlic this and that. If you like punishment then squirt some chili sauce in. Balance it out by putting a salad in. MoBowl was definitely the surprise of the night. With short lines and a few straightforward offerings, I really had tempered expectations. But after having a few items from other food trucks that were low on the price to value ratio, it was nice finding a place like MoBowl. They serve several good size rice bowls that are filled with ingredients and definitely among the most filling items sold in a food truck. We went with the 5 spiced pork bowl and decided to add an egg for $1. The egg was cooked perfectly and mixing the yolk with the well flavored spiced pork and greens was very satisfying. I checked out MoBowl when they where at the inaugural New Park Street Eats. The two things that caught my eye on their menu were their Umami Tofu Bowl and their Cheesecake Egg Rolls. I was having a pig out session that night and this was the 5th and last truck I visited after trying food from Grillstars, MoGo BBQ, 51st State, and BBQ Kalbi. By the time I got to MoBowl, I was pretty much stuffed. I was wondering how was I going to fit in a rice bowl from MoBowl? Thankfully, you can choose to have a "Taster" sized "bowl" of anything on their menu for $4. Last month, I helped organize a food truck event at work and MoBowl was one of the food trucks that participated. They were the first food truck out of five to arrive at the event. I was impressed that they came an hour early. Kevin was a pleasure to work with and so was Will. At the event, I tried the five-spice pulled pork and the peanut pesto chicken. Both bowls were very tasty and I'm craving them as I'm writing this review. Next time, I will try their cheesecake egg rolls. Seriously? This comes from a truck?! I came to their Hellyer Rd. location, which is out in the middle of nowhere but business buildings. I was pretty out of place from a sea of tucked in button shirts and slacks, but I was there for their pulled pork with an added fried egg. When they finally called me name, it was like a brick they had given me. While I stared at it, I figured it's all rice, little meat, little vegetables, and just my egg. Nope! When I finally sat down after 20 mins of riding with this thing in the car, I began mixing everything together. I swear they add meat and put rice around it b/c the meat was very generous. I couldn't finish it. It's so much! I can't wait to try it again, but I wished they had more hours available, they were open on weekends, and were at different locations. MoBowl is a pretty good Asian fusion food truck, so I was surprised to see that it didn't have any reviews on Yelp. I got lunch here on a weekday, and it was the most popular food truck in the G Food Truck Lounge. Very popular with office workers in the area. Building a bowl starts by choosing two grains. They have normal options like white / brown rice, but you can also get fries, garlic noodles, or a salad. I got brown rice and the salad with pulled pork. Whatever marinade they used on the five spice pulled pork was amazing and I would put it on everything. The portion size was fairly generous for $10 -- some people might even think it's too much meat. (There were a few people in our group who didn't finish all the food.) My only complaint is with the spicy salad dressing. Not only was it not spicy, it was so watery that most of it collected at the bottom of the container, making the rice soggy and washing away some of the pork's flavor. You should definitely try to get the salad in a separate container. read more

I frequent the food trucks often since they are always in my area for work. Recently I enjoyed one of their specials which was "Honey Pepper Steak" over rice and I ordered the Chicken Wings Appetizer. I've enjoyed their chicken wings before, I get that they are basically just fried chicken wings with Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce on it, but I love that sauce so it's right up my alley. Today, unfortunately, my chicken wings seemed to be undercooked, which I didn't realize until after I got my food back to work. So, bye bye, chicken wings :( On to the "Special of the Day," my Honey Pepper Steak Rice Bowl. The steak was marinated nicely and had a great flavoring. Although again, I have to admit, some of the pieces of steak was pretty rare and would have probably grossed some out but I can handle rare meat so it was ok, it just made the meat a little chewy. hhhmm, maybe MoBowl was having an off moment, the food did come out pretty fast. I am slowly catching on to the food truck craze. Hunted this one down today and picked up lunch from them. The guys who work here are super nice, they all gave me a big smile and said "Hi" when I walked up to them. Kevin, the guy who took my order, was very friendly. He explained that they don't have a "type" yet and that they serve asian american and the closest type they came to was Hawaiian. He honestly seemed embarrassed when I told him I was there because of the 4.5 rating on Yelp. He seemed really humble and asked me to not have my expectations too high and to judge the food myself. Humility is a characteristic that I admire a lot. My mental rating for them at that point just based on that was 5 and got validated after I ate the food as well. I got the fries with their secret sauce (seems like a mix of mayo and chili sauce) and the peanut pesto chicken with the fried egg. The fries were the bomb and the chicken was good, not great. They have some drinks you can pick up as well including Italian soda which is nice. Note they don't take CC yet, so go with cash. read more

So, I had my long awaited Date Afternoon with MoBowl again. To my surprise, I found myself in a Love Triangle. I was introduced to the New Kid On the Block. Heart pounding, I wasn't sure what to expect. My heart and soul had been captured by the Honey Pepper Steak bowl for so long, I didn't know what else to think. Enters, "Bone-In Pork Schnitzel" - So Succulent, So Debonaire! My Subconscious Fantasy.....(Hehehe) Naaahhh, Lemme Stop! LMBO! This dish came recommended as a Debut item! And...LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING!!! THAT DISH RIGHT THERE....I SAID, THAT DISH RIGHT THERE...I DON'T THINK YOU HEARD ME! I'M SAYIN' THAT...DISH...RIGHT....THERE... changed my life! I'm genuinely a new person! :-) The crispy pork chop was seasoned so perfectly and it was JUUUIIICCCYYYY! O-M-G! They put some type of seasoned, ground meat over top of the tasty, steamed brown rice that I ordered with it that just put the UMPH in my whole experience! It was the icing on the cake, the tip of the iceberg, the cherry on my Sundae and the Cats Meow all in one! Wow! (Sigh) Although, being a BIG fan of MoBowl and the fact that I will travel to visit them, I am not being biased in the least! MoBowl had a tent set up at SJ Night Market. I ended up ordering a braised pork bao and a honey jasmine green tea. Both were delicious. The braised pork bao was very flavorful especially with the yellow pickled radish and cucumbers. I think it has a good balance of seasoning. The honey jasmine green tea is actually one of the best I've had. Their tea is strong and you can taste the jasmine very well. I would definitely come back here and order more, especially their tea. read more
