Anyone who has truly had gelato can tell the difference between a place which sells "gelato" and a place which actually sells gelato. I came here skeptical of the quality of their offerings, but was convinced by friends to take the plunge. Places like Mochi try to get away with selling us hard working consumers less ice cream by simply calling it "gelato". They didn't fool me. This is quite obviously just normal ice cream, and merely average ice cream at that. For the prices they demand, this serving of real gelato would suffice. However, ice cream is lower quality and costs less, hence my frustration with their serving size and price. Let me state I came in supporting this business. But as of my last visit I was very disappointed. First off the ambience which there was none of, was off putting. Lights were dim and no music. Imagine as if you walked into a restaurant that was closed at 6pm. I approached the counter and was greeted by a somewhat enthusiastic but scared young man. It's was as if he just got reprimanded by his manager who was looming over his shoulder like a suppressed black cloud of rage and sadness. So as I start to order I'm left in a state of awe as most items were not available early on in this night shift. So as I order one of my items (which happens to be a $15 dollar shaved ice) I'm told I cannot mix two fruits. I am only allowed to add fruits at a additional cost. Now here lies my problem, I'm paying a premium to get a premium item which I expect to have premium service. Not here my friends, as the young man exhaled and looked over his shoulder down at his manager for the answer to my mixing fruits question. The manager spoke with underlying rage in his voice "NO! You have to order it separate and that will be a an extra charge.". My problem is as you can see, is the not only the way he treated his customer but his employee. I'm ordering $15 worth of shaved ice. The item I ordered is more expensive than the item mango vs. strawberries I'm looking to split so wheres the issue? But clearly cost of scooping by the manager is a extra charge. The young boy was terrified and confused clearly he knew the management was wrong. Long story short, take my money...I get the desserts and as they are delicious, I don't condone this kind of abuse to a customer or to a employee. There is a such thing as customer service and common courtesy which this "manager" was clearly lacking. As a owner I would take this yelp review into serious review and look at your manager for your failing business (zero patrons when I was there). This place is so cute. There is practically every flavor of mochi you can think of from the usual strawberry, mango, peach, to plum wine (my fav) mint chip, and cookies and cream. I like that they have large tables and lots of chairs to feel comfortable to hangout and chill. the shaved ice is good too. the small is good enough to feed like 4 people. read more

I used to come here to purchase beard papa cream puff a lot. It wasn't because the cream puff was extraordinary but because it is close to where I live. However, up to some point, I stopped coming here at all to get the cream puff. Staffs here are not helpful or friendly, it feels like they don't care. Cream puffs here are inconsistent quality. I received many cream puffs that were with poor amount of filling. I basically was eating a dry, almost empty puff cone. The poor experiences added up to certain degree, I decided to stop purchasing here anymore. I admire either their food nor customer service. read more

I visited recently because my sister said they have shaved ice here. Unfortunately the selections are very very limited and the cheapest size is still $9. For shaved ice there's only Japanese or Italian style and you can't really customize it. My sister ended up buying two mochi ice creams for $2/each and since card payment is for $5+ I felt obligated to buy one too. It was fine, but I really could've gotten the same thing at Mitsuwa or Trader Joes for much cheaper. It's too overpriced here. read more

I think this place is unsanitary and has a facade to make people think its a wonderful place. I used to work here, and I'm glad I don't anymore. They don't follow proper food safety procedures, like no nail polish/jewelry. I saw an employee drop some cream puffs onto the floor, but the person just wiped it off with a paper towel and returned it to the tray. Well, I did think that two on a Saturday night felt a bit understaffed but the two young ladies today were very pleasant. Two words... SHAVED ICE. What a monster of a dessert! Layers of yumminess will make your tummy hurt later. My boyfriend and i shared the "small." The small is the size of your FACE! Not really but you get the gist its huge. It had a bottom layer of strawberry ice, topped with green tea shaved ice, topped with red beans, kiwi, bananas, and mochi! pheww.. The flavors are all good. However, i don't think they are all good together. The flavors didn't meld well and confused my palate. Next time i'll just do green tea, red beans, fruit, and mochi! yummmmm. We also had two mochi filled goodness. The sweet gal behind the counter suggested we get one of those shaved ice and two mochi deals, which might i add saved me $1! Heck yes. This place is awesome for their desserts. I came here a couple of months ago with a friend. We were on a vacation and my friend insisted that we come to this place. We got a small green tea shaved ice, 1 peaches n cream mochi, 1 pistachio mochi. The small shaved ice was huge. It probably could feed about 3-4 people. What I loved about it was that it was filled with mochi, fruits, and beans on top. Andd when you get to the middle there's ice cream! Since it was only the two of us we only ate about half of the shaved ice. Their mochi gelato was awesome. I love mochi so it was definitely nice to see all the different flavors that they have. I wished that I live in SoCal so that I can come here more often. read more

YUM! After my friends and I grabbed some ramen, we decided to go here since one of my friends never had mochi before. We got here at 9:00pm. We thought it was closing since it was completely empty, but it closed at 10:00pm. After we came in, people start coming in. Seriously, we must bring in crowds wherever we go. We ordered some mochilatos as well as a single shaved ice, mochilato style. Mochilato style is basically a blend of Italian and Japanese styles. It has mini-mochi, red bean, gelato, bananas, strawberries, mangos, kiwis which strawberry and green tea flavored shaved ice. I ordered the coffee mochi. It was good, but probably not one of my favorites. I like the toasted almond, mango, green tea, and more that I can't remember at this moment. We were pretty full still, so the single was probably a bit more than we could handle. Their shaved ice is HUGE so I feel that the size matches well with the price. The shaved ice was refreshing, sweet, fruity. Very delicious. Perfect snack for a summer's day. Also, fruits taste better when it's in season. Overall, a place for dessert such as mochilatos (mochi with gelato ice cream) and shaved ice (mochilato style is best, in my opinion). read more

What an interesting concept! I've only had ice cream filled mochi before but never had gelato... but make sense since they are both frozen creamery goodness haha. There were so many mochilato to choose from! The mochi itself tasted soft and the gelato creamy but melting sort of. It was flavorful and a fun experience to try! I like options and man there were a good amount! I also like that they have other stuff such as traditional mochi which I bought some for my parents. Besides the mochilato my bf & I got some macarons! Although it seems like they didn't have much or at the time we went we still got to try a handful. These are not cheap lol almost $3 for one! but so fun & colorful lol. Anyways, I enjoyed these macarons because they were not extremely sweet because at some places it's like a sugar overload ! I love mochi, I love manju, I love macarons, I love gelato, I love Beard Papa, I love shaved ice... So naturally I love Mochilato! This is a great place to come when you want a little dessert (or a lot). There is plenty of seating if you want to eat your dessert there. If you haven't tried Beard Papa cream puffs before I don't know what you're waiting for! The mochi ice cream here is good, I'm not the biggest fan of mochi ice cream but if you are I'm sure you'll like this place. yum! i have visited this place twice and each time found the mochilato to be extremely delicious on a hot summer day. shaved ice (japanese style) is more tasty but the added fruit in the mochilato adds a healthy twist to it. A junior size could feed 4 people for $10. I didn't try the ice creams or mochi ice creams but did buy some mochi to go. The redbean, taro, lima bean and chestnut. To be honest, the mochi were not that great. The skin was too sticky on some of them and the inside filling was too dry. It was my first time here, especially I live in San Diego. The gelato was okay; I ordered coffee and chocolate. The chocolate macaroons are awesome! The coffee, vanilla and pistachio macaroons was just okay to me, although my boyfriend liked the pistachio flavor. The shaved ice was just okay too; not a big fan of shaved ice though. I loved their MOCHI ice cream. I just don't understand why it was all the way in the end. If it was in the start of the line, I would've ordered the mochi more. Being lactose intolerant, I get excited any time a place has dairy free options. I've never had sorbet mochi ice cream so I was SUPER excited when they said their mango and guava flavors were SORBET! Yay for us lactards, we can have our cake and eat it too! I was really pleased with the guava, but sometimes it's hard for me to judge because I've been eating non-dairy for the last 7 years. My husband however was not as please with the guava--he tried the plum wine flavor (full on dairy) which he said he liked better. I also got some macarons from there (which are not made in house) but pretty delicious. A little spendy--I think it was about $2 per macaron but they were delicious so I guess as far as macarons go it was worth my $11.50(?) for 6. Got taro, caramel, vanilla, coconut, passion fruit, and lavender and I liked all of them. Nice and chewy texture and the cream flavor was good. Please note that the macarons are NOT dairy-free but for me I can eat small quantities of dairy (like that in macarons) and be ok. Also tried the peach tea which I would not recommend. I would like to go back at some point and try the other sorbet mochilatos, shaved ice and other macaron flavors which all looked tasty. read more

So fresh!! It's so much different than the store bought ones. Mochi is very soft and where else are you gonna find Creme Brulee and Tiramisu Mochi???? They also have strawberry, green tea, peaches n cream, raspberry, coffee, HAZELNUT (so goood), and some others i can't remember. Mochi is priced $1.25 each. They serve really good gelato. Mango is always are fave. They have gourmet shaved ice!. Sort of like Guppy Teahouse but, they use hawaiian shaved ice (very fine) and they have 4-5 selections, so you don't have to spend too much time deciding on your mix-ins. They have a coffee selection which is very good, but strong. The strawberry one is really good. They make this great strawberry syrup for it and it can come with red bean, ice cream of your choice, and you can add mochi to it for additional price. JAPANESE WAFFLE is a must order! really really good. Try the nutella and bananas. Cannot go wrong. They recently added food to their menu. Haven't tried it yet, but now you can have lunch or dinner there! read more
