My appointment was canceled the week of the holidays and birthday celebration. I received a call that the technician would be on travel and no date for return. (Lie 1) However, my old tech was recommended and I didn't want to go to her bc she can not design my nails. Called back to schedule another appointment for a different day due to the urgency to be informed she was in town however, I had to call the new tech. After the manicure was finished - instead of giving me time for my toenails to dry I was rushed to leave. I have been going here on and off since they were across from Foot Locker. I believe management has changed and it's evident. I went to Tiffany whom I believe is burnt out. She kept mentioning the price for specific services, that was tacky. My ombré acrylic set was horrible. When I had time I ended up going somewhere else to have it removed, I didn't mention my distaste for her work until the person working on me said, "who did your nails?"...I told him where I went but not her name He said I paid too much money for awful work. I made an appointment for a pedicure since I was planning on running errands at the mall. I liked that I could request an appointment online. Upon arrival, I was escorted to the quiet room. My aesthetician (Tony) met me there, introduced himself, then led me to the polish selection and pedicure chair. I passed a small area with 4 to 5 chairs, but he led me to one that was further by the manicure tables. The pedicure process was enjoyable, but I became increasingly irritated by a constant beeping coming from the back. Every five minutes, there was low beep-beep that came from an unidentifiable source. I finally figured out what it was when Tony took me all the way to the back to the drying area which was located right outside the laundry room. One of the dryers in the laundry room had finished a cycle and that's why it kept beeping. They had left the door wide open so costumers could see all the dirty towels. It was gross; hence the one star less. I would definitely come back to Modern Day Spa. Also the nail technician rushed through painting her nails. Mgmt gave me a discount and said that kids take longer because they don't cut their cuticles. My colleague Mitchell raves about this place for mani/pedis, so I stopped by a couple of weeks ago for waxing. I came in a little before 5pm and finished up at 5:35pm. This spa is a lot bigger than it looks. I'm not sure how a person in a wheelchair would get around, as you have to go down a few stairs to get into the spa, and the hallway is narrow. I was escorted to their relaxation lounge to wait. I saw some consultation forms in that dark room but wasn't sure if I should fill one out. A lot of places don't have you fill one out for waxing (but they should due to liability factors). But I guess unless you are taking Retin-A or are using AHAs or BHAs it doesn't really matter. My therapist's name was Paula. I got an eyebrow, lip, underarm, and she squeezed in a half leg wax for me as well. At first there was some confusion because she thought I was getting a Brazilian but after we cleared that up, she went right to work. She did a great job and was meticulous in tweezing strays. The only thing I didn't like was that she didn't ask how I wanted my brows shaped. Nevertheless, she did a good job and I liked the way they turned out. This spa uses the best smelling wax for the face. As she was waxing the 'stache, I asked what smelled so good. They use the GiGi Milk Chocolate Creme. So far my experiences with GiGi wax (at home and at the day spas) has been pretty good. The desk staff is very friendly, and check-out was seamless. It came to $101 before gratuity. *Since writing the below, I was seen by the manager and refunded my money. I would say be careful and ask for an experienced technician if you are going to this place. The job itself was actually very good, and what happened was unfortunate and caused me a lot of time and discomfort. With that being said, the manager did take appropriate action and accommodated me after seeing the wound for herself. The mindset of the technician remains questionable. I have been here once before with no qualms with the service. However, today I went in for a Brazilian wax and ended up in the emergency room. I am a regular waxer, and have not had any post-wax problems before. But today, while the woman was working I felt a horrible pressure in the most sensitive area after she tore the strip. Since I have a high pain tolerance and am already aware of the typical discomfort, I didn't put too much thought into at that time and committed to just seeing the process to the end. I noticed that she was patting the area a little more than normal and even changed the tissue beneath me in the middle of the process. Near the end she smiled awkwardly and said that there was little bleeding from when the roots get pulled out but nothing to worry about. The whole area was numb from the waxing so I said thanks and paid my bill. When I got home and used the bathroom, I noticed more than a 'little' bleeding. I was shocked, thinking that maybe my cycle had started early. When I patted again and there was even more blood I freaked out and grabbed a mirror. I was not prepared for what I saw, a large gash on my vaginal wall that was bleeding profusely. Recalling that the waxer was not using gloves, I rushed over to the emergency room. After seeing the emergency physician, I was told that I was lucky and would not need stitches but to keep the wound clean, apply medication, and refrain from a lot of movement for the next 5-7days. I've been a pedi customer at Modern - despite parking fees, mall hassles, and front desk rudeness - for nearly a decade, but not after today. A nice technician who I've had in the past made an error and painted my nails two different colors, which I only discovered at home in daylight. That's fine, mistakes happen, but it's highly inconvenient after you've paid $45 for a service. Couldn't go back in to have it fixed immediately, and can't walk around with two different colors, so I resolved to repaint myself. I called and asked for a manager, and was told I would have to come back in so they could see for themselves because the nail tech swears she used one color - and that maybe the color just looked different on my different feet (?!?!). I explained I couldn't, and was offended they didn't believe me - a long-time customer who has never before complained. The manager told me she needs to see it herself because people complain their nails have chipped all the time. I told her I had a hard time believing she didn't have it in her authority to fix the situation instead of further inconveniencing me, but she was pretty much unmoved and would at most give me a very small discount on my next visit. They do reasonably good work there for the occasional splurge (I go b/c they use clean tools and thorough de-callusing; the polish application is sometimes slightly sloppier than one would like for the money), but I will no longer support a business that clearly doesn't value my word or my money. read more

I've been a regular here for almost 3 years. The tech are wonderful. Vivian is a great waxer and nail tech. The downside is the HORRIBLE RUDE girls that work at the front desk. They always forget to tell Vivian I'm here and I'm usually waiting 20-30 minutes in the "quiet room" for her and then they just go oh! I come here regularly for facials and eyebrow/eyelash dye and wax, and sometimes for massages and nails. I get my eyebrow/eyelash dye and wax with Christina and she's amazing. She is very quick, but gentle and careful, and the dye always lasts a long time. I come out looking great every single time. I've had various girls for facials and have been satisfied every time. They have a great deal where you can buy a pack of facials or massages and save a lot of money. The prices here are much better than at most day spas and, compared to something like Elizabeth Arden, this place is a steal. The massages I've had there were also very good. My husband and I have gotten a couples massage twice and were very satisfied. There is a male masseuse there whose name I forget but who has really amazing hands, I highly recommend going with him (and no, this recommendation has absolutely nothing to do with looks, trust me on this one). I also like the fact that they are open very late (past 9pm I believe) and will usually accommodate you the same day, unless you're looking for a particular person. I like the comfy robes and the waiting room, which is dimly lit and relaxing, and they will serve you water with lemon/orange/cucumber and lemonade. I would give it 5 stars but for the front desk. I went on yesterday for the Spa Week promotion- Green Tea Pedicure & Eye brow wax for $50. I was greeted upon arrival and escorted to the relaxation room. I was offered a beverage but declined. I just don't trust food/beverages from establishments whose primary business is something other than food service. Anyway, the relaxation room was small and dark. When I came in, there was a lady sitting there in a robe (I'm male). It was a bit awkward but two minutes later, the nail technician came to pick me up for the pedicure. Her name was Angie and she was really amazing and very friendly. The pedicure was wonderful and included a leg exfoliation and green tea mud hydration. The eyebrow wax was very good as well because she actually ASKED me how I wanted them. I told her to just remove the excess but not to narrow them. I have learned from experience to always make this known before any waxing starts because it may take weeks for the brows to grow back after being waxed and I don't like mine too thin as they are naturally very thick. Overall, a great treatment, but I cannot speak to the body treatments as I did not have any. However, this would not be the place I'd visit for body treatments just because its in the mall and the facilities are cramped and seems like it would not be relaxing. I have been this salon regularly, and in past few months, I just walked in the salon to get gel nail and pedi service. The first nail tech was fantastic, (I forgot to ask her name) 2nd one - her name starts H, she is seems always available, I get her at least 3 times in past. The last time she did my pedi, she rushed me to chose nail color, it was almost she was demanding to get what she wants. At pedi station, she looked at my feet, and laughed because my pinky toe has visibly ugly corn. It was rude, very rude. Plus she skipped base coat before pedicure. Other tech - 2 brand newbies, one of them was struggling to remove gel nails (this is very basic, I can even do it by myself). other one cut my toe during pedicure, it took for awhile to stop bleeding. If you just walk-in to get service at this salon, you need to wish yourself luck. If technitians are available, it means, there're reasons for it unless they're brand new. And brand newbies are not skilled & not sincere. I will stick with specific nail tech. read more

Tried the spa today for a deep tissue massage and I wasn't disappointed. Masseuse: Ruby. I kid you not, this is the best massage I have ever had. I had an 80 minute deep tissue and Ruby was wonderful. She worked all the knots out and can definitely use a lot of pressure (but in a great way). Location: Being inside the mall in Pentagon City I was a little nervous about ambiance. Once you step inside though you forget you are even at a mall. I was pleasantly surprised. Don't let the location fool you. They have a ladies locker room but for men there is only a single person bathroom with some lockers and a shower in it. There were some previous posts about the front desk staff being rude but I didn't have any issues. One of the girls was very friendly. They were a little slow when I stopped in to schedule the appointment but the day of they were faster. Overall, I thought it was a relaxing experience and a great massage. Came here for a massage after unable to coerce anyone into buying my Red Door massages for me and thinking I should branch out and try some new spots. The locker room is tiny. And uncomfortable. The treatment room was dark and quiet and calm and that was nice. The massuese was nice and she did a decent job, it wasn't my favorite place and the masseuse seemed awkward a little. She just left afterwards without saying anything and then after a few minutes where I was getting acclimated to my body being loose, decided I should put on my robe and leave...only to find the masseuse standing outside the door. I've been coming here on a regular basis for the last five years. Not every experience was five stars, but overall they deserve a five. I highly recommend Christina for any nail or waxing services, she is very particular and professional and is VERY GOOD at what she does. A regular manicure with Christina lasts me almost two weeks and I pick a lot at my nails. If you do a shellac manicure, it will last longer. Most of the receptionists are earnest and try to remember your name and usual services. I'd recommend making your appointment a week in advance. The good technicians book up quickly as they all have a regular client base. Regarding the few disappointing services: Most of the women that work there seem to have high standards and work ethic because any time I had a bad experience, it seemed to be fixed right away. They used to have a receptionist that was really nasty, but they got rid of her. One time I had my nails done by a newer technician and it was AWFUL (the worst I've ever seen). Deep tissue massage here was a thoroughly relaxing experience. Massage lasted for 50 minutes, which was a perfect amount of time for me. After placing my belongings in a locker, I was escorted into a comfy relaxation room with magazines and salt crystals a plenty, while we sat and sipped tea and flavored water in utter peace. The whole massage was well organized and transitioned nicely. The massage bed was warm, which was a nice touch. The masseuse also put my sandals on my feet, which seems like a small thing, but is a good example of how no detail was too small for them to perfect. I can't speak to any of the other services, but go for the massage! Only thing is that this is in the middle of the mall, so you have to pay for parking or take the metro. Lady at desk and a lady who does nails said 39$ because it's treated as a fill and 5$ removal of existing tips. So when the lady cut my nails down, my nails that were supposed to be over lairs, she said she miss understood. Okay so am I getting charged for tips now? She replies yes. I had a terrible experience here came in for an acrylic full set, and was seen by Lana. My first issue was that she kept telling me that the style of nail I wanted would be extra. I said ok, but she reiterated at least 2 more times. Then she felt it was necessary to go into detail about her cheating boyfriend, and his ex girlfriend. I then asked her if it was ok to use a file on my natural nail bead instead of the electronic drill. She hesitated, but then agreed to hand file my nails to remove the shine. I was very relieved, because the drill is a bit too harsh for me. The service begins and she continued to talk about her relationship problems. It was just awful. About 45 mins later she was finished and I had a shiny, yet very THIN set of stiletto nails. I've worn long nails for 15 years and have never experienced this amount of lifting and breakage all within a couple of days. You can even bend some of the nails they are so thin. I contacted the salon and was told the manager would get back with me, but they never did. I wanted to have someone redo them for me, but I think I will just cut my losses, and visit a real Day Spa. She remembered me months after my first appointment with her, something that impressed me immensely. She continues to be an amazing person, but to the point of the review gives amazing massages. She always starts by asking what you'd like her to focus on, and she varies the pressure to your needs. She can easily put you to sleep with relaxation, or give the right pressure to work out any knots or tight muscles you have. I can't say enough about the thoroughness of her massages when you have specific requests. She'll trace muscle tension to areas you didn't even realize we're tight and make it all melt away. I've gotten a few lip waxes here and whatever they use always gives me an allergic reaction. The one time I've gotten a manicure, it was adequate. I was happy that I saw someone quickly and that the tools were sterilized. Unfortunately, the manicure itself was mediocre -- my nails ended up over-filed and misshapen, looking worse than when I came in. The paint job was also lackluster, with my nails looking streaky and chipping soon after. I have been to this spa twice, once two years ago for their hot rock massage during spa week and yesterday for a manicure, pedicure, massage and facial that my in-laws got for me. When I walked, the receptionist was very nice and led me back to the locker room to change and get ready for my services. The locker room is very small and I ended up changing in the bathroom for more privacy. My first issue arose with my robe. If you wear a robe/wrap size bigger than a large BRING YOUR OWN ROBE AND WRAP! My robe barely closed and I spent most of the time at Modern, adjusting it to avoid embarrassment. It is hard to relax when you are tugging your robe closed. After changing, I was led to the relaxation lounge to wait for my massage. The lounge is nice and comforting, but a bit dark. My masseuse came and led me back to the room and did an okay job with my massage. While it wasn't the best massage, it wasn't the worst. After my massage, I went back to the lounge to wait for my facial. My esthetician led me from the lounge to do my facial and again, I faced a dilemma with the wrap she had for me. Luckily, I was under a sheet for the facial because my wrap did not go all the way around me. My facial was quite nice and the esthetician did a good job of asking me if everything was comfortable without disturbing the relaxation. After the facial, I went for my manicure and pedicure. The nail tech was great, but the water was lukewarm and a bit uncomfortable. I said something to the tech and she adjusted it, but not enough. She also turned on the massage chair, which was a bit jarring and undid the relaxing effects of my earlier massage. However, my hands and feet look great so it was worth the lukewarm water. All in all, I would go to Modern Day Spa again, but only if I received another gift certificate. It was nice to have all of the services done in one place, but I think the separate spots where I get my spa services done provide better services.
