If you value your dental hygiene, I wouldn't come here. My husband and I had a few pleasant experiences pre-COVID, but their cleanings have changed significantly since. Coming back in 2020 for the first time, we were in and out in about 15-20 minutes. Pretty quick for a dentist visit, but I thought their procedures might be shorter due to COVID. Well, a year later along with vaccines, my last appointment was still only about 15 minutes. My teeth felt dirty just a month later. Due to a change in insurance, we were able to make appointments at another dental provider who was shocked at the state of our teeth. My husband has to go in for deep cleanings, which aren't covered by insurance. Chicago Avenue Smiles cost us hundreds of dollars, not to mention the panic of realizing our dental health has been neglected for years. I hope they change things, but I wouldn't trust them for further visits. read more

We have had nothing but great experiences with both Dr. Lee and Dr. Chi! They always take the time to answer our questions and give suggestions for our dental routines in a nice, non-judgmental way. Let me preface this by saying I haven't gone to the dentist in years. Actually, I don't remember my last visit, which says a lot. I was researching offices in the downtown area so I could make an appointment during my lunch break. However, a friend recommended Chicago Avenue Smiles which is in the West Town/Ukrainian Village neighborhood. It's a little out of the way, but due to my recent experience, I believe it is worth the trip! I went in for a check-up/Invisalign consult/see if I could get my wisdom teeth removed. My dentist was Dr. Jennifer Lee, who was patient, courteous and very friendly. She explained what my insurance covered, my out-of-patient costs, and referred me to an oral surgeon for my wisdom teeth removal. While she gave my teeth a deep cleaning, she explained how to take better care of my teeth without judging my poor dental hygiene. The appointment wasn't exactly quick. I finished watching the Disney movie, Up by the time everything (new patient orientation, x rays, deep cleaning, polishing) was done. However, given the extent of my teeth, I thought it was reasonable. I don't know how else I can praise this dental office. I didn't get a "grand tour" but it seemed clean and modern to me. The cleaning wasn't terrible and I found myself enjoying it. I never thought I would say that. The only negative thing I can say is to be careful if you are allergic to dogs since there are two locked away at the front desk. If you're not allergic and have time to squeeze in a teeth cleaning on Saturday morning, come on down! read more

I've had 3 visits to Chicago Ave Smiles and have seen both Dr. Chi and Dr. Lee. Both dentists are fantastic; they are honest, thorough and friendly. At my most recent visit, I saw Dr. Chi. He took the time to show me on the X-ray which teeth specifically had tartar buildup. He also told me a specific method of how to floss in a way that will remedy this issue. He spent a lot of time with me and really took the time to educate me on how to improve my dental health. I have been to another dentist in the neighborhood and had a very bad experience. It felt like more of a dental factory that is there to see as many patients as possible, and to try to upsell each person on unnecessary services. Chicago Ave Smiles is the complete opposite. I was saving this place for my 300th review! I just got a teeth cleaning here yesterday and saw Dr. Chi. One of the best dental experiences (yes, you can have those) just due to the environment, service, and expertise. This office is state of the art - digital xrays to see cavities or problem area in different views and contrast. Flat screens in each room - in front and on the ceiling for your viewing pleasure. Friendly staff - from Dr. Chi as well as his assistant. He gave me an honest assessment and didn't pressure to sell something that wasn't broken like some dentists have done in the past. With each treatment suggestion, he showed me what was going on (via x-ray and visual) and his plan of attack. Also, there's a cleaning special right now - so no Groupon or special coupon needed. $50 for first time clients - regular cleaning, xray, and exams; plus 40% off all dental treatment complete by the end of the year. read more

Wait, what...I haven't reviewed this spot yet?! After 4 visits already, I am totally slipping. Most recently, I was here for a cleaning and Dr. Chi was good about gently reminding me about maybe adding a guard for my teeth clenching that I must be doing while I am sleeping or inadvertently maybe when I am stressed. He has helped re-fill and fix my old fillings. He answers all my questions related to my previous TMJ, flossing with wax versus string, and electronic toothbrushes. The staff gets me in quick and I don't ever feel like I sit for more than 5 minutes before getting in the seat. I like that there is a tv in front and above you for a relaxing experience and to take away the though that you might be getting a drill or needle in your mouth. I like that Dr. Chi talks about process, makes recommendations, and gives explanations. read more

I needed a dentist and saw the glowing Yelp reviews, plus I know someone else who goes here. After putting it off I was forced to find a dentist because I was in severe pain. I was puzzled as to what was going on - the pain was in both my lower and upper jaws. Dr. Chi took x-rays and zeroed in on a suspected tooth. The tooth had work done to it prior and was not salvageable. Well, pulling this tooth cleared up the problem. I learned that tooth pain can radiate. Even though this was an upper tooth, my lower jaw hurt also. For follow up care I will need a root canal on another tooth and an implant for the tooth that was pulled. I thought the estimate for these services was reasonable and am budgeting to catch up on my all dental work now that I have found a trustworthy dentist. There seems to be a lot of dentists along Chicago Avenue and most of them have good ratings, have nice offices and provide competent care, but I would highly recommend this office. If you are in the area and need dental work and also if your current dentist recommends replacing a lot of fillings or $10,000 worth of work, I would get a second opinion here. read more

I found Chicago Ave Smiles through Yelp, and have to agree with the consensus here. Dr. Chi is awesome. He's quick, honest, direct and doesn't try for the upsell. In fact, his prices are beyond fair. Seriously. I hadn't been to a dentist in 8 plus years, and even after telling him this, there was no mention of deep scale cleaning, discovery of "almost" cavities or anything to empty my pockets. Professional! I have to say that walking in, I saw that the place was clean, modern, and also child friendly! Dr. Chi and Dr. Lee were in the front and both of them were very nice and pointed out the kid's toy section around the corner. My son ran over and had a great time while my wife and I were filling out paperwork. Then when it was time for our teeth cleaning, I went with Dr. Chi and my wife and son went with Dr. Lee. Dr. Chi was very professional in explaining what was going on and extremely thorough with the cleaning. My wife had indicated the same when I went over. They even offered my son (he's 2 and a half) a little cleaning where Dr. Chi was very gentle with him. The little guy was so happy about the cleaning and the toothbrush that he wouldn't let go of the toothbrush even when he passed out in the car on the way home. I love this place! Dr. Chi & Dr. Lee are great! I was able to get an appointment and see them within 5 days (I'm really last minute). I arrived and the office is great - they even have tv's in front of you and on the ceilings to watch during your visit. I got a checkup and teeth cleaning by Dr. Lee and had a fantastic experience. She explained everything she was doing and was extremely thorough. She check on me through my cleaning to make sure I was comfy and their assistant Anna was super polite and gentle as well. They also told me about their $99 teeth whitening for life (no pressure though) and I definitely went for it! They fit you for trays, and as long as you make your visits, they provide you with the prescription strength whitening stuff that you need. Definitely ask about this service!!! They also seem to have great deals for those without insurance, but my insurance is great (Guardian) and covered everything for my visit. Besides being our family dentist for the past year, I just have to rave about my recent experience. I needed a new retainer and Dr. Chi was able to squeeze me in. He was very professional and educational as he explained the process of being fitted for a retainer. I felt comfortable and knowledgeable about what was being done. When I picked up my retainer, the place that they used did such a great job. My retainer is really great quality where it fit perfectly, provided the sufficient support, and Dr. Chi even let me know that if I ever lost mine or needed it replaced, they have a digital image of my retainer so I can always re-order. Let's just say - I look forward to going to the Dentist now. For years I have neglected my teeth. I finally got some quality Dental Insurance and decided to take full advantage. After researching on Yelp, I found this place. They started with a deep cleaning. Patient. Calming. Professional and reasonably priced (I have done my research with other places). Loved them so much that I decided to get 2 of my wisdom teeth extracted. Easy! What made it easy was the fact they were playing an awesome Reggie Miller documentary that I have seen 5 times. So I thought to myself - this is going to be fun. I just wished they pulled out all of my teeth because I wanted to finish the documentary. The TVs are laid out on the front wall from where you are sitting. When they recline the seat - low and behold - there's a TV on the ceiling! * (Note to self: Must have this in my Man Cave). After the cleaning and extractions, I was so impressed that I decided to go with Invisalign braces and have been stopping by there about once a month for over a year now. The two docs that run the shop are a power couple with a great vibe. I am a big believer in having a group of specialists around your life (car mechanic, accountant, doctor, stylist, barber, DJs, Promoters, etc). Hadn't been to the dentist in at least 2 years the first time I came in for a cleaning/checkup and was rightfully terrified I'd have numerous cavities. The technician was friendly and gentle and didn't expect me to make awkward conversation. Bonus: watching The Blue Planet on the ceiling-mounted TV! Wonderful practice. I came in to get a second opinion about some crowns my previous dentist had been pushing. Instead of trying to upsell me on crowns and other procedures I did not need, Dr. Chi did a fantastic job on a couple of fillings. One of the fillings was pretty deep and complicated; he took the time to show me pictures of the situation so I would know how to keep an eye on things in the future. The best part is that I had absolutely no sensitivity afterwards. No one likes fillings, but this is some of the best dental work I have ever had done. So many dentists try to push unnecessary dental work and cosmetic treatments. Dr. Chi seems to really care about doing quality dentistry and is focused on the well-being of patients. This is the first dentist I have visited since moving to Chicago and I plan on keeping them the only dentist I see! My experience was great. I got there a few minutes early and didn't have to wait at all. The technician/assistant took all of my dental x-rays while Dr. Chi was finishing up with his previous appointment. They have TVs in front of the chairs on the walls and also on the ceiling that you can watch while you are reclined. Dr. Chi did the cleaning, which went quickly and painlessly. After everything was complete, he took photographs of all of my old fillings and went over the photographs with me. This was a really unique and helpful part of the appointment because I was finally able to visualize why one of my previous fillings had a sharp edge to it. We discussed the options for treatment and he was very upfront with costs. I highly recommend Chicago Ave Smiles. While I personally dread going to the dentist (who doesn't?), this was definitely one of of my better experiences. I was in pain with a toothache on a Tuesday night and they were able to squeeze me in the following morning. The office is clean and modern, the staff is super friendly and polite, and most importantly the dentist, Dr. Chi, is great. He was very professional and thorough with his evaluation and very straight forward about the costs without the high pressure sales tactics I've unfortunately become accustomed to in some other offices. I also felt the pricing was more reasonable as compared to other places in the area (*ahem East Village Dental). The procedure itself went very smoothly. The TV on the ceiling is a nice touch to keep your mind off of the work that's being done. I was surprised when he told me he was finished - quick and no pain. He definitely knew what he was doing. My lovely lady dentist, After many years of wanting to go to the dentist and no time on my hands, I decided to find myself a dentist. After much searching I found Chicago Ave Smiles, and after a great cleaning I'm here to tell you, you don't need to keep reading reviews, or search for expensive fancy dentists elsewhere, this is where you want you're teeth to be treated. She was prompt with the cleaning, as were the technicians with setting up my profile, photos etc. The documentary on the whale migration was entertaining, and the cost of refilling my cavities was SPECTACULAR. Just had my first really bad dentist experience. Made a last minute appointment for a teeth cleaning and exam for my son (he's almost 12, I'm 38), Dr. Chi was able to see us. The office is nice, clean and seemingly understaffed. Dr Chi was at reception and the hygienist took my son first for cleaning and ex rays. She was really nice and the cleaning experience seemed fine. Then Dr Chi came in to do my exam and cleaning. His exam was thorough and he was very detailed in his explanation of a weird not quite done root canal thingy I have going on which has been explained to me before. I'd made my appointment over the phone with Dr Chi and had explained that I smoke and drink coffee and sometimes I need that extra deep clean, but that I'd had my teeth cleaned in the last 4 months and couldn't afford a deep cleaning and he said it'd probably be fine, he'd do a regular cleaning and I figured he'd let me know if that wasn't possible because my teeth were already too far gone. So I'm in the chair, and he's cleaning my teeth and he's not polishing them but using this super high pitched scrubber pointy thing. Kinda hard, but I figure it's his way, but I asked if he was doing the scaling thing and reminded him I couldn't afford it. Which seemed to irritate him. I just didn't want him providing a service I couldn't pay for. Then the doorbell chimed, he walked away and said 'she's done'. Okay. But he hadn't finished, at least he hadn't done on one side what he had on the other. I figured we were just calling it even on my cleaning. I dunno. It was just weird. It's not a good feeling when you've irritated your dentist visibly. Then my son gets in the chair for his exam, Dr Chi pointed out some tartar and said he was going to use that same tool on my son to bust up some of the tartar around his gums. I was standing next to him while he was telling me what he was doing, which was back and forth back and forth under my sons gums. My son had tensed up and I had a hand on his leg to relax him, the doc was saying he was going to cause some bleeding to relieve some of the swelling, so he continued with the back and forth and I watched him going deeper and deeper under the gum line and I saw my son's face scrunched in pain and I said 'stop'. He continued, a very focused man, back and forth, deeper and deeper, my son's gums are definitely bleeding heavily and he keeps going and I say 'stop'. My son is scrunching into a fetal position."STOP". "PLEASE STOP". Still, focused, back and forth, I reach my hand towards the dentist's and he finally takes note of me. He looks up at me, I'm inches from him and, says he thought I was talking to my son. It was just really weird. He had no awareness of having caused someone else pain. I was pretty upset. Shaking. He explained that if I understood dentistry, I'd understand what was going on and why it was necessary. I'm not a dentist though. I'm a cook. I need, and my kid needs, to understand that there is going to be pain, why it's necessary and how long it's going to last. My kid is not a pain wimp. He's a catcher on his baseball team, he's had a toenail pulled off with little more than a wimper. He's never, never complained about a dentist, or a shot from a doctor or any other normal and/or necessary discomfort. In all fairness to Dr Chi, I didn't give him much of an opportunity to explain. I was pretty freaked, he didn't really seem apologetic or concerned. I felt as though he thought we were in the wrong for having an unpleasant experience.He said as we were checking out that he treats children often and has stellar reviews. I went to Chicago Ave Smiles after my crown (that I got from another dentist several years ago) fell out while I was in the Bahamas on my honeymoon. I bit into a gummy bear, heard a crunch, and my first thought was "What was in this gummy bear I just ate?" Turns out, my crown fell out and I cracked it. I went to see Dr. Chi to get a new crown and the whole process was quick and painless, and actually quite pleasant. The office is new and modern, and there is a TV on the ceiling above the chair. It's a great distraction and even after my procedure was finished, I was comfortable enough that I kinda wanted to watch more TV. Ultimately, the end result is a crown that fit perfect and it hasn't been giving me any problems. I highly recommend Dr. Chi. read more

I usually don't go out of my way to do a review but I had to share my experience with everyone. I'm not surprised at all that the ratings for Chicago Ave Smiles are all 5 stars! woohoo! My personal experience started at Dental Salon where I asked to get rid of some staining on my front tooth that was revealed after my Invisalign treatment. Dental Salon told me the only way to get rid of that stain was to get a veneer which ranges to about $1000 and up. Clearly, no one has that in their back pocket so I wanted to get a second opinion. I asked around and was referred to Chicago Ave Smiles and after the first appointment I was sold. I did my check-up and cleaning there and they were so personable that I wasn't even used to it. They gave me tips and tricks on what I should do to keep my teeth healthy and didn't ask me a bunch of questions while my mouth was occupied. (had a dentist that was trying to have a conversation with me, how was I supposed to respond!?) They also have two TV screens - one for when you're sitting up, and one for when you're laying down. Fancy! So after the first appointment, Dr. Lee said she can try drilling out the stain and covering it with filling for about ~$100 and if that didn't work then we'll look into veneers but said it should work. She gave me my options with pros and cons and gave me ample time to do research and make my decision without the sales-y pressure. I came in for my second appointment and it was easy breezy lemon squeezy. She asked if I wanted to go numb and double checked if I was comfortable with pain. I said i'm pretty tolerable, no numbness needed. She started the drilling and filling and gave me instructions if I do feel pain and what to do. She made me feel so comfortable. Needless to say when I was done, my teeth look wonderful. Stain completely gone! Can't even tell that it's a filling. I asked her if this is permanent and she said, no, it depends on how well I take care of it. She was honest and said I can always email/call/text if something happens, making herself available for any troubles that may arise. Overall, I had a GREAT experience! Both dentist were great, definitely going to be coming back and sticking around long term. Because a review can't always be perfect, my only minimal negative experience would be the magazines in the waiting room didn't cater to my audience. (they were magazines about babies and PEOPLE latinas) haha and just a tip, maybe add a charging station and available WiFi to keep up with the times! Choosing a dentist off of Yelp seemed incredibly sketchy to me, as before this I worked entirely off of family recommendations, but this worked out great. Dr. Chi is very professional. I loved that he was very upfront about prices, and walked me through my options without being at all condescending. He even showed me the tooth in question on the TV screen which I've never had a dentist do before. All in all I felt really well prepared to make an informed decision. He even changed his mind during an inspection, and ended up recommending a choice that was cheaper for me and more work for him - not something you'd see in a shady doctor. I have a new respect for Yelp, and a new dentist only blocks away from my apartment. I am very pleased all around. read more

He is also very patient I am terrified of dental work i get really tense and right away i get a fever but he made me relax and i been to other dentist all my life and they don't take the time to calm me down and they even have a TV on the ceiling so patients can watch while their getting work done. having been traumatized by my last dentist, it had been quite some time since i had seen anyone. when i had an infected tooth, i knew it was time to pull myself up by my big boy pants and find a new doctor. after reading the glowing reviews here on yelp and determining that dr. chi accepted my insurance and was in a location that worked for me, i made an appointment. i cannot STRESS how STRESSFUL i find all things dentist-y. i had an amazing dentist in my hometown, but have never found anyone in chicago that came close to matching his "bedside manner". i communicated that to dr. chi and his staff. they in turn were very up front about not using nitrous oxide. i thought it was going to be a deal breaker. but i thought to myself, if it gets really bad, i'll kick him in the groin and bolt. fortunately for both of us, it didn't come to that. i received a root canal from dr. chi and in all honesty, i can say that it wasn't bad. AT ALL. by no means am i saying it was gay old time, but it wasn't as uncomfortable as the CLEANING i got from my last butcher. i mean "dentist". dr. chi communicates everything he is going to do BEFORE he does it. he is one of the most detailed oriented doctors i have yet to meet. the hygienist is very warm and friendly and the office is immaculate. did i mention they have tvs on the ceiling? no? THEY HAVE TVS ON THE CEILING! not so much a luxury but a necessity for those of use how have extreme dental anxiety. i told a dear friend who was looking for a new dentist about dr. chi. she saw him and the MOMENT her procedure was through she called me to thank me. i think that pretty much says it all. i cannot recommend dr. chi and his staff enough. read more

She went the extra mile to let me know that my insurance was out of network, but they were still were able to squeeze me in and accept my insurance plan. Dr. Richard=phenomenal. He explains options do profieciently, and you can tell when medical professionals try to milk that $$ with upgrades this, policies that. He doesn't. Dr. Chi is the best. I have had extensive work done over the last few years and all of it has been virtually pain free. Dr. Chi does a great job of explaining the process and works to prioritize treatment based on need and what makes sense for you financially. Dr. Chi's staff is always friendly and helpful and the office is clean and comfortable, complete with TV's on the ceilings to help distract you while you are in the chair. My teeth have never looked so good. My insurance only pays for 2 clenaings a year, so I popped for their $60 new patient special for an interim cleaning. My teeth look like I spent thousands on them. Very nice, honest dentist, and willing to work with my schedule (took me same day as he had an opening, I was elated). They don't take my insurance, but I am happy to pay out of pocket for a few extra cleanings and some whitening to help my teeth look better than I ever expected. THANK YOU Dr. Chi. I am so glad I found you. I have to add, too, this would be a great dentis for kids---movies on the wall and ceiling and toys in the lobby. read more
