A former vegetarian restaurant located in this Linda Vista strip mall has been replaced with Modern Kabob which is a Mediterranean eatery that also sells smoothies. The parking lot was limited to about a dozen spaces shared across several businesses. The inside of the suite had been repainted with a flat white color and didn't have any significant decor other than the brand logo on the right wall. Four tables were available for onsite dining.
The one-page menu listed an assortment of appetizers, bowls, plates, salads, sides, and wraps/pitas. Of the eight different plates, I selected the Beef Tikka which was five chunks of grilled beef marinated in a blend of house spices. Yellow basmati rice, a piece of pita bread, and a choice of appetizer came with the order. Hummus was my pick from the selection of appetizers. Even though I was dining in, the food was served in a plastic takeout container except for the pita bread which came in a paper sleeve.
For the $18.95 price, the portion size seemed small. There should have been a couple more chunks of beef and a side salad instead of the pickled onions that were provided. That's closer to the standard plate served at most Middle Eastern spots around town. The meat was also a bit chewy and needed more tenderizer. The rice and hummus were of acceptable quality. The pita bread was soft and warm from the oven which was positive. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my visit to Modern Kabob. read more
