I'm a huge fan of Slate and didn't even realize it was the same owner until I looked at the menu and noticed all the similarities! I had an amazing experience. Did the tasting menu, and it was so much food! Worth it. The flavor of the lobster bisque was spot on. The scallop aquachiles were flavorful and bright. The steak and frites were cooked perfect and just right all around. Ambiance is great for a date night or girls' night. Service was fast, attentive and engaged in great conversation at the end of our night, he even asked the chef if they could make a dish they no longer offer at Slate and was told yes! Which only means I'll be back within a week or two. Great experience!

Lovely new Restaurant. Quality of food is very good with fresh farm to table ingredients. There is a small disconnect though. The dining experience is promoted as family style share plates but portion sizes barely serve 2. Service is attentive but not familiar. The ambiance in the restaurant is comfortable and modern. Favorites are the cocktails. Favorite bites were the burrata salad with fresh peas and the lobster ravioli in cream sauce.

Loving this new restaurant. The owner, Vincent, also runs the popular Slate restaurant in Camarillo. It's awesome he came over to our table to check in on us at the end of our meal. Every dish was so delicious. My favorite were definitely the loaded oysters. The ribeye on special was also outstanding. Our server, Whitney, was so sweet and made sure all our needs were tended to. Excited to come back here soon.

4 1/2 STARS Came here for the soft opening and 4 course meal. The food was delicious. Complimentary Tuna tartar - really good 1st: I had the best wedge salad I've ever had. The best part of my meal. Hubby had lobster bisque 2nd: curried cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Both really yum 3rd: oysters and shrimp cocktail - oysters were ok, shrimp cocktail was really good, huge shrimp, spicy cocktail sauce, delicious cucumber salad 4th: prime fillet and Denver wagyu steaks, both solid choices, the mashed potatoes were just ok, Dessert: a dark chocolate pudding thing with a butterscotch sauce, whipped cream, and graham cracker crumble - really delicious, really rich Subtracted a half star because the cocktails were mediocre. We had the peach one and the G & T one.

Modern Kitchen was great- from the decor to the service! Their food and cocktails were tasty- we especially liked the Mac and cheese and the short rib.

Modern Kitchen is a very good restaurant. The staff is friendly and the whole restaurant gives off a very modern vibe just like the name states. I just wish that the cooks added a little more spic to the food and that the hamachi was colder.

Came here since it was an anniversary. A newly opened restaurant with a beautiful ambiance, friendly service, but the food is sub-par in my opinion. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated, very classy and luxurious type feel. We ordered a few cocktails, appetizers and a set menu. I felt like they gave a lot of food (not a bad thing!) but we ended up taking leftovers home. I really liked the hamachi. My parents had the sushi roll (I forget which one) and ordered the filet mignon and the steak/frites. We all really liked the fries (garlic, Parmesan), but felt like the steak was under seasoned. Filet mignon was good, flavorful and tender. Nice restaurant for the ambiance but food didn't wow me.

Exquisite cuisine. Well crafted drinks! Beautifully decorated ambience. Clean restrooms. Great music. The crowd that frequents are down to earth. The owner was hands on and so welcoming. The staff were a blast to interact with. I can't say enough good things. My husband and I look forward to frequenting this place.

Attended the soft opening of Modern Kitchen. 4 course prix fixe menu. Everything was delicious! I prefer to arrive for early dinner times, so much less crowded and service is best, in my opinion. Arrived at 5:15p, no waiting, straight to our table. All dishes were plated and presented beautifully. We finished ever bit of every course. Between courses there was some waiting time but nothing unreasonable. I'm sure it will get better with time as the restaurant launches soon. MK is a beautiful, modern and trendy restaurant that would be good for special occasions, business dinners or date nights. There we're two televisions at the bar area, more for casual viewing than watching a big game. I liked that the bar area was separated from the dining area with a chest high partition. I would not peg this restaurant as good for young kids or dogs, as it's more upscale than casual dining. We've been to the owners other restaurant in Camarillo, Slate Bistro which is just as good! I look forward to returning in the future.

However, we were surprised by the pricing for what is essentially a takeout operation: $28 for a steak sandwich, $24 for a chicken sandwich, $24 for a breakfast burrito, $17 for bread and butter, and $9 for a cookie--all with a required 18% gratuity. We hoped the quality of the food would justify the cost, but unfortunately, it did not. After waiting a long time for our order, we finally sat down to eat, only to be very disappointed. * The Fries: These were thick, over-seasoned, and over-fried potato wedges. * The Steak Sandwich: Consisting only of steak and onion, it was incredibly dry and unappealing. * The Burrito: Entirely bland and lacked flavor with eggs and over fried bacon bits and potatoes * The Coffee: Even the iced lattes at the coffee shack were bad - tasted very milky with very little espresso and warm. Our mocha latte was horrible as the chocolate powder was not mixed well, clumpy on the bottom of the cup The meal felt greasy and unhealthy, and despite being hungry, we couldn't even finish half of it. The food was absolutely disgusting. We threw everything in the trash bin. I wouldn't recommend this spot and certainly won't be returning. It felt very much like a one time money grab as no one in our family will be revisiting this place. Even Jack in the Box would be better.

The place was packed, but I have to assume we got really lucky because we got seated right away at an open table near the front. Our server greeted us immediately and brought us waters for the table. We were overwhelmed initially by the menu options because everything sounded incredible. We asked our waitress what she recommended, and she said literally everything on the menu is amazing - nothing is bad and every dish is popular. So I was quite impressed to hear that. My friend and I decided to get the steak tartare, woodfire grilled octopus, fried gnocchi, and chicken liver pate. Every single dish was actually incredible. The chicken liver pate came with four slices of toast, some pickled vegetables and ground mustard. The pate was creamy, rich, slightly on the sweeter side, so it paired perfectly with the tang from the ground mustard & pickled vegetables. The woodfire grilled octopus was cooked perfectly. Seriously the best, freshest octopus I've ever had! It wasn't chewy or fishy at all. The texture was absolutely perfect. It was very easy to cut into and juicy. It was paired perfectly with the aïoli as well. The steak tartare was extremely fresh. One of the things that I hate about steak tartare at restaurants sometimes is it will start to look brown from the meat oxidizing so it doesn't always look as appetizing, but this tartare was still had that vibrant red color as if they had just cut the meat. Lastly, the fried gnocchi was amazing. It's the first time I've ever had a dish with fried gnocchi. They paired it with a cream sauce that was absolutely delicious. I wish I remembered what was in it, but it was so good. I wanted to drink that sauce lol. Love how the gnocchi was also perfectly seared, had no lumps, and basically melts in your mouth. Overall, loved the ambience of this place as well. It's very hip. trendy. Definitely a louder environment but perfect for a weekend night out to enjoy great food. I would recommend making reservations. I think my friend and I probably just got lucky because we went a little bit earlier on a Friday night. Also wanna mention all of the wait staff was amazing. Food was served very quickly and we had no issues with any of our orders. I seriously cannot wait to come back here and try every single thing on the menu!

The tasting itself was $88 and it serves 9 courses. I recommend having it if you aren't sure what to eat. All the dishes were presented nicely and tasted wonderful. Ken is now running FOH, and he's a real pro. They have two new FOH servers who show their newbieness but they definitely have promise. I do appreciate they remember how I like my meat...and I trust they will get their consistency place which will move them from excellent now to GREAT. The menu is mostly the same (for those that loved their original menu - the chawanmushi egg custard and chicken wings are still there, though the chicken wings lost a little of their unique and beguiling crispness, which I hope they will find again. They flavours are still off the hook...The shishito peppers and whole squid seem to be missing) They also added a tasting menu which, for those unfamiliar with Charcoal Niku's style of modern Asian fusion cuisine, is a great introduction. At $88 for 9 courses ($118 for a one serving sake and wine pairing) the price is actually quite reasonable for the quality of the ingredients, prep, and presentation. All in all, I am very glad they are back, and if you haven't tried them, I could not recommend Charcoal Niku more. So much so I have friends from LA, 30-45 minutes away, who are constantly asking me, "When are we going back?" 'Nuf said.
