My visit to Modern Kitchen was a culinary delight from start to finish. The ribeye, with its perfectly cooked, tender meat, was paired perfectly with mashed potatoes. The short rib was so succulent and full of flavor that it practically melted in my mouth. The sea bass, with caviar was chefs kiss! But it was the dessert that stole the show. The churro beignets were a revelation. Warm, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was topped off with ice cream and it was sooooo good I wanted to order another one. I'm a huge fan of Slate and didn't even realize it was the same owner until I looked at the menu and noticed all the similarities! I had an amazing experience. Did the tasting menu, and it was so much food! Worth it. The flavor of the lobster bisque was spot on. The scallop aquachiles were flavorful and bright. The steak and frites were cooked perfect and just right all around. Ambiance is great for a date night or girls' night. Service was fast, attentive and engaged in great conversation at the end of our night, he even asked the chef if they could make a dish they no longer offer at Slate and was told yes! Came here for their soft opening and had their four course meal special. There were two of us to be able to share and try more of the menu. Our waitress was great and helped me decide on which cocktail to try out. Got in right when they opened to enjoy an early dinner before the rush. We ordered: Complimentary house made potato chips and crispy kale paired with chipotle dipping sauce. Diamond noir has a bit of a strong flavor but it was good. The good flake had an aluminum texture . Modern spritzer wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be which is good but it was on the weak side. Burrata salad was so beautifully colorful and full or flavor! Lobster bisque had so much flavor but also a really salty finish. Was hoping for some lobster chunks but sadly no . The toast it was served with, balanced out the saltiness. Portobello mushroom carpaccio was more like a mushroom salad . King salmon crudo tasted refreshing. Lamb chops were cooked to perfection. Love that it wasn't gamey at all. Diver scallops was a hard pass for me and I usually love scallops. It was wayyy too saucy. The ginger over powered the dish. I hate returning plates but I couldn't finish this one. Sea bass plate was the replacement dish. This was much better but nothing special. Bread pudding was the dessert of the day. Idk why we only received one when we had 2 four course meals but at this point we didn't want to bother them for another. We've been twice. Service is excellent. The bar is excellent. The chef is responsive to food needs (the crouton free Caesar is great!). Live music is terrific! Why the 3? We just don't really like it. At the price point there are too many places we would rather go as the food really did not sit well with either of us, either time. It's not got that extra yum factor. Dropped in for a dinner at the bar last night. The interior of this place has a nice modern but classy vibe and the tables were fairly busy, by the end of our meal most of the tables were full. Service was courteous and fun, they have a live musician playing some jams and bartenders checked on us regularly. The cocktails have nice presentation here and the food is perfect for sharing. They have a happy hour menu from 4-6 which definitely has appeal, and I hope to come back for that. Moving to the food we had the tartare trip which comes with salmon, tuna and yellow tail and wonton chips. A refreshing start to the meal . The tuna had a nice marinade and was definitely my favorite of the three. Wonton chips were cooked perfectly and a nice pairing. I ordered the steak fries med rare. The steak was cooked perfectly and the fries were a delite. They come with parmesan cheese and my wife ended up demolishing them. Apparently we have to order those as a side from now on. She opted for the MK Wedge which my wife really enjoyed it comes with blue cheese dressing and bacon. You also have the option to add proteins as listed on the menu. I am so sad about the changes! Why fix it if it's not broken?! The previous burrata salad with peas and big pieces of almonds was amazing. It's now greens, carrots, fruit, and burrata (2/5). Such a strange mix and definitely lacking the flavors and harmony of before. Has the chef changed?! The wonderful tasting menu has now been changed to a new version (1/5) that is less courses and does not have the better menu options. I believe they still offer the old one on Sundays and Mondays now. Not sure though. The filet was nicely done (4/5). Our waitress was super nice and accommodating (5/5). read more

Lovely new Restaurant. Quality of food is very good with fresh farm to table ingredients. There is a small disconnect though. The dining experience is promoted as family style share plates but portion sizes barely serve 2. Service is attentive but not familiar. The ambiance in the restaurant is comfortable and modern. Hubby had lobster bisque 2nd: curried cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Both really yum 3rd: oysters and shrimp cocktail - oysters were ok, shrimp cocktail was really good, huge shrimp, spicy cocktail sauce, delicious cucumber salad 4th: prime fillet and Denver wagyu steaks, both solid choices, the mashed potatoes were just ok, Dessert: a dark chocolate pudding thing with a butterscotch sauce, whipped cream, and graham cracker crumble - really delicious, really rich Subtracted a half star because the cocktails were mediocre. Came here since it was an anniversary. A newly opened restaurant with a beautiful ambiance, friendly service, but the food is sub-par in my opinion. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated, very classy and luxurious type feel. We ordered a few cocktails, appetizers and a set menu. I felt like they gave a lot of food (not a bad thing!) but we ended up taking leftovers home. I really liked the hamachi. My parents had the sushi roll (I forget which one) and ordered the filet mignon and the steak/frites. We all really liked the fries (garlic, Parmesan), but felt like the steak was under seasoned. Attended the soft opening of Modern Kitchen. 4 course prix fixe menu. Everything was delicious! I prefer to arrive for early dinner times, so much less crowded and service is best, in my opinion. Arrived at 5:15p, no waiting, straight to our table. All dishes were plated and presented beautifully. We finished ever bit of every course. Between courses there was some waiting time but nothing unreasonable. I'm sure it will get better with time as the restaurant launches soon. MK is a beautiful, modern and trendy restaurant that would be good for special occasions, business dinners or date nights. There we're two televisions at the bar area, more for casual viewing than watching a big game. I liked that the bar area was separated from the dining area with a chest high partition. I would not peg this restaurant as good for young kids or dogs, as it's more upscale than casual dining. We've been to the owners other restaurant in Camarillo, Slate Bistro which is just as good! I've been a longtime fan of Slate in Camarillo so when I heard Vince was taking his expertise to Westlake Village how could I resist. Modern Kitchen is a very well appointed gathering place for culinary adventures and carefully crafted libations. The look and vibe are so well executed you just feel at home here. So welcoming and warm. I sampled a number of cocktails and was very impressed by the servers knowledge and the bartenders execution of my choices. A Martini is ALWAYS gin unless one orders a VODKA martini and it's important to know this. It's also important to know that a classic martini should always have an odd number of olives for good luck and by tradition. Modern Kitchen knows this and did it right. I ordered the Pork Chop which was so perfectly cooked I was in awe. I love a good pork chop but often they come out dry or too salty. This is not the case at Modern Kitchen. This pork chop was moist, flavorful , and cooked to the perfect doneness. The owner (who forgot to invite me to the grand opening ) and the staff are top notch and know how to deliver the total experience. Our server, I believe Adam was his name(?) was attentive and enthusiastic. Another young lady assisting (Bree) was so kind, helpful, and welcoming. I'm always hesitant to share my special finds with the masses as I know it will get busy, but this is a secret I can not keep. It's just too good. I'm going to through this bonus out there. Great vibe upon entering this tastefully decorated restaurant. Innovative cocktail list, some smoking under a glass dome. Pretty cool! I ordered the Burrata Salad with fresh spring peas and tangerine. It was beautiful and very colorful. Too pretty to eat but I did! Delicious!! I loved the Brussel Sprouts with just enough Korean chili paste and sesame seeds and a little charred just the way I cook it at home. The Denver steak with Béarnaise sauce was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately Modern Kitchen is not an improvement compared to the restaurant that occupied the space before. The food was well prepared but the menu overall is forgettable, lacks creativity, and seems be stuck in the safe-zone of so many other "new American" restaurants offering the same selections of lack luster items such as crudo, crab cakes, roast chicken with potatoes, and cauliflower steak. The decor has a strange light blue/turquoise theme running through it including fairly cheap looking turquoise velvet chairs which I found a bit outdated and off-putting. Thousand Oaks / Westlake Village is desperate for a new exciting restaurant and so far this place has not risen to meet that task in my opinion. Hopefully with time Modern Kitchen takes more charge to create a stunning menu with dishes that are worth a second visit. I am willing to try it again some time down the road! read more

Both my wife and I went the prix fix menu route and the food was fabulous, the only issue is that there was too much food- I couldn't even come close to finishing my sea bass. But all food items were very, very good. Drinks were fabulous as well. Vincent has done it again by opening up a great restaurant. It was our first visit, The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing as well as the food and service were top notch. Our waiter Adam was excellent. He recommended a couple of different dishes. Everything we ordered was delicious except for the complimentary chips. Chips had too much oil and were served cold so it tasted like solid fat. Brussel sprouts tossed in with the chips were so tough it was inedible. Waitress messed up a couple of things on our order but was very apologetic and managed to fix things. My husband made a dinner reservation and highlighted on open table that we'd be celebrating my birthday. The look and feel of MK hasn't changed much from the previous Gallery restaurant which we loved and frequented. We were seated in a nice booth and given two menus, one was price fixed. We decided to order one price fixed meal for my husband and I was going to order A La carte. When we gave our order to the waiter we were informed that everyone at the table had to order off the same menu due to "timing issues for the kitchen". This requirement wasn't stated on the menu nor did the server or hostess mention this. So, we each ordered A La carte. The food was very good however make sure not to order too many things at once because food will come out rapid fire. We had just started eating our appetizer of tuna crudo (delicious) when our salads, (wedge quite small and the burrata salad which was delicious) were delivered. Fortunately we didn't place our main course until we finished our salads. The salmon was very tasty as was the pork dish. My husband was still eating when the server came by to ask if we were having dessert. When we said no, (my husband thought they'd bring a birthday dessert since we saw several desserts with candles go by) he promptly delivered our check. There wasn't a wait for people to be seated and we were shocked by the rush. On the way out of the restaurant, my husband spoke with the owner and told him what had happened. While the owner listened, my husband was surprised by his apathetic attitude. We won't be returning to MK and will miss the Gallery which always has excellent service. Our rating of three is mainly because of the service. Would rate the food higher. read more

Excellent job on the light renovation from the previous restaurant occupancy. And how great to see Rox again behind the bar! She took great care of me! Snuck in for a quick appetizer and drink. Moderate crowd for 8pm on a Thursday, which was their 2nd soft opening day with a fixed menu. I'm told a new menu will be coming in a week or two. I had (if I recall the name correctly) the Smokey Old Man. Something recognizable about that drink. Had to check the menu to see that truffle oil (?) was added. Unique. And delicious! Also had the king salmon appetizer. More truffle oil (do I sense a theme?). Beautiful presentation. I do wish there were 4 pieces. 3 seemed a little light. $21. Definitely not an inexpensive place, but fits in well with the neighborhood. Quality and, as mentioned, very unique presentation extend to all their drink and food creations, so I didn't feel shorted. Looking forward to going back when I have more time! read more
