Quick and easy eatery that has a variety of options. I had the steak sandwich and it was fairly decent. It also came with a pickled red cabbage salad. You could tell that the ingredients used were fresh. The only complaint I have is that the amount of steak was disappointing for the price. Ambience - Very sleek and chic' vibe going on with lots of modern decor. Things are very simple colored, lots of lighting and a very nice open kitchen. The lobby has lots of seating but kind of close together so get ready to schmooze with strangers. Store was very clean when i got there and very well organized. I got there around 2Pm and this place was popping, the whole dining room was almost filled. Good first sign Menu - the menu is broken down into 5 main categories of salad, sandwiches, grain bowls, brick oven pizzas and make your own entree. Each category only has a few items but the items have an extremely surprising varied of specialty items. Example: Blueberry hemp granola, grana padano, adzuki beans, Asiago, goat cheese and so on. So the ingredients they use are definitely something you dont find everywhere and of higher standard. The main focus of their menu is eat healthy, from sustainable partners and from scratch. And they actually commit to this in almost a zealous fashion. It was almost like fine dining but in a quick casual setting. Very nice touch. I did notice that the menu said "For Fall/Winter 2017" which makes me wonder if the menu is entirely or some parts seasonal. If so that is pretty dope. Service - Came in and walked up to the menu board, there was an employee cleaning behind a bar tap and said she would be right there. I asked for suggestions and she made some good suggestions and was for the most part pretty helpful. Only downside is she spoke so softly that i only caught like every other word. But she was nice and even asked if this was my first time, which i responded with yes. She then thanked me for coming in and go a little more enthusiastic. I saw her later bussing the lobby and cleaning and she even came by to check on me. :) thanks! Also on the receipt, it tells you what you ordered and how many calories, protein and fat the dish contains and the daily % value. Thats cool! Food - I got the main signature dish which was the Curry Salmon Bowl. It came with "sustainable salmon, heirloom rice, braised kale, toasted coconut, green onions and a sweet potato curry. Wow thats interesting and new. When i got my food i looked down and saw what looked like a very meager portion of everything. I was like WTF? I spent $13 for a less than half filled bowl, this must be a mistake. I was about to start calling for a maitre d'. Then i remembered their Philosophy of eating right and healthy. The human stomach actually doesnt need a large portion of food at one time, it is actually bad to eat huge meals. Whew, i almost let my American corporate brainwashing train of thought get to me. Spend more get more, or that everything in 'Merica is big or super sized. Whew, crisis adverted. So i taste the curry first and man oh man was that straight legit. This was a very nice and complex curry with lots of flavor from the coconut to the spices and even a slight taste of sweet tater. It wasnt as thick as i would have thought but it had an awesome flavor profile. The rice and kale mix was also just as good. Heirloom rice is from the Philippines and has a much larger and heartier blend. It isnt thin like American rice or basmati rice. The rice was cooked very well with no hard spots or overcook parts either. This blend made for an interesting and tasty mix. The salmon was 50/50 for me. The salmon i got was clearly cooked awhile back, i got my food within about a minute of ordering it. Hmm something "fishy" must be going on here to get it that fast. (Lol, see what i did there...fishy...i got salmon....?) Nevermind. I tested the salmon and it was only lukewarm at best. It was also fairly dry in certain spots, so i know this was precooked and then held under a heat lamp or in a steam table for awhile. However, the salmon did have a good flavor to it and was cooked all the way. Sure hope so for however long it was being held. After i tasted a bit from everything i mixed it all together and had a very robust, complex and hearty meal. After mixing it all together i obviously didnt notice the fairly dry salmon. Overall my dish was very good. And at the very end... i was full. Tip of the hat for proper portion sizes for healthy eating. Overall - I got the feeling of fine dining at a casual place. The menu has lots of awesome ingredients and concepts going into each dish. They were masterfully created based on a theme and flavor profiles. The price thou is kinda steep but then again you have to remember that when you have a higher standard and quality of items, unfortunately the price goes up. So for me, yeah my food was really good, but i cant sustain ably pay $13 every time, but i did get the most expensive item. If you want something better than average and feel good about eating it then check it out. Dont be disappointed in the portion sizes either, they are made that way for a reason. I have ordered three different things three times, a salad and two of their sandwiches with the keto wrap. Everything was delicious and fresh, and the food was healthy. While they are still really good about getting the orders out in a timely fashion I find they've gotten sloppy about the preparation of the food. Some examples are way too much jam and pesto on the blueberry sandwich, to the point that it's dripping and the bread is soggy. This place was "so-so". Nothing on the menu really jumped out at me though most of it seemed like it could be tasty. We opted for the margarita pizza and 2 kids meals. The pizza was ok but there wasn't much basil on the pizza at all it was mainly cheese bread. Given the name and the "real food movement" logo of the place I was hoping for some beautiful fresh basil. The kids meals come with nothing but the entree, no drink or cup of fruit and now that I think of it I didn't see many if any options for fruit on the menu. It seems to be pretty standard restaurant practice to throw in some fruit at least with the kids meals especially when you're charging for the price of a full kids meal. The interior of the place is very cute and well, modern. We may come back to try breakfast but we won't be rushing back for dinner anytime soon. read more

Super affordable!! I met up with a couple friends here last week for lunch and ended up getting a Cold Brew and kids grilled cheese with veggies. The sandwich was a bit bland for me but the meal, overall, was really inexpensive. Their service is also quick and they have plenty of seating (as well as parking), but for me, it just missed the mark in terms of my initial "taste test." Alright, i love this place. I kind of hate eating healthy, mostly because when i think "healthy" i think "salad" and that's too much lettuce for me. But Modern Market does an awesome job at making healthy dishes. My favorite so far has been the buddha bowl with tofu- so yummy, and the portion size is huge! From what i understand you can also get the buddha bowl with different proteins, i like the pulled pork as well. For $8 you really can't beat that. I also really appreciate how all of their drinks are free refills which means i can have as much cucumber mint lemonade (so good) as i want! But as my friend finished his original sandwich he stopped mid chew and pulled a 6-inch BLOND HAIR from inside the sandwich! We abruptly left. This used to be one of my favorite eatery in the area, food always seemed so clean and fresh. However I had a horrible case of food poisoning yesterday after eating their tofu plate for the first time with arugula Gorgonzola salad, roasted veggies and curry split pea soup (used to always get soup and sandwiches). I started throwing up about one hour after eating their food and that repeated through the entire day. I have not eaten anything else but modern market food yesterday so it was easy to pinpoint the origin to my problem. Others in my group had steak sandwiches, kids tomato cheese sandwich and pepperoni pizza. They were fine. A friend mentioned I should let the restaurant know so they can properly check their food, since it could be dangerous for kids and elderly. I tried to call their number and it went directly to a central order taking and catering line etc. After explaining I need to speak to the actual store, they transferred me there. I first held for 7 minutes then maybe another 15 minutes a second time but no one picked up. I couldn't keep holding indefinitely so I filled out a corporate contact form instead to notify them. If not for the lack of phone pickup I might still give them a 3 or 4 star rating, since this was the first time something like this happened with their food and typically their food seemed fine. However, I had to bring the rating down to two stars since nobody picked up the phone. IMO, if you cannot easily contact the store then they don't truly care for feedback. Especially something like this where I was trying to give them a heads up for food safety and it proved too difficult. ****Update**** Corporate responded back to me that there have been no other similar reports and all health and safety procedures and checks were completed during the time you visited. They said they have 3 food safety and taste tests daily and have logs and audits. Everything was fine during the time I got there food. They offered $10 credit for my next meal if I show cashier their email to try again. It concerns me they responded to my food poisoning report, which ruined my entire weekend but could've been worse, with claim that they do through safety checks and everything was audited to be perfectly fine. If they are unable to reflect and research possible reasons for this random food poisoning, then how am I to know it won't randomly happen again? Upon a quick read thru of other yelp reviews left for this location, there have also been incidents where hair and paper etc were found in the food. Which I'm sure is not part of their "strict procedures" yet happened. Although I'm sure their food will still be safe and great most of the time, I will not be using their offered credit to give this location another try. That is simply too much of a gamble to take for my well-being and comfort. read more

I work downtown and out of the three times I've gotten food from this location, it's been nothing bad bad experiences. This 3rd time around is when I drew the line. I ordered a quart of the green chili soup for pickup, and to my dismay I was given a quart of sautéed vegetables. the reason I am drawing the line is not only was I given something completely wrong but there was attitude involved. I did not have time to pick the soup up but my linecook headed over and picked it up for me. The woman who was working expo apparently had an attitude and handed over a quart of veggies without making sure the contents of the container was correct with the order. we work in the industry and pride ourselves in great customer service and attention to detail. truly a Zero start experience. I moved to the Arboretum area last year and Modern Market has been my COVID go-to. It's exactly the type of food I would be making for myself at home (but occasionally don't have the energy to make). It's slightly more expensive than let's say, Chipotle, but it's totally worth it knowing you're eating healthy, whole foods . It's SUPER reliable, consistent and always so quick. Let me first say that I really like the food here. Every time I come something goes wrong with my order. Today I can in and ordered the eggplant goat sandwich on gluten free bread. This sandwich is so good! I was really looking forward to it, I crave it all the time. I got my sandwich on gluten free pizza crust instead of bread... I asked if they were out of the bread and she said yeah, is that cool? Well, I guess it is since I'm starving and I wasn't aware you were out of GF bread until my sandwich was ready. If I had known I might have ordered a pizza instead. The sandwich sucks on pizza crust. The last time I came here I ordered my food over the phone for pick up. I got the BLTA on GF bread. The woman taking my order repeatedly told me they don't serve GF bread even though I have been here several times and eaten it. She kept insisting I was wrong instead of looking into the matter but I eventually got her to check and she apologized and said she never knew they had that. My food came out fine but it's a hassle to have to educate their staff. The time before that I ordered Togo as well and got home to a sandwich on regular multi grain bread instead of GF. I am severely allergic to gluten so I had to drive all the way back and get my order corrected. As I was walking out someone came out with a coupon for a free meal and apologized for the mix up. Came here today in a bit of a rush and was trying to tell the cashier what I wanted to eat he didn't seem to listen to my order and kept suggesting I eat other things but I am on a specific diet and I told him these are all the only things that I can eat and he kept suggesting something else so I had to tell him exactly what I wanted and that I was in a hurry. After all of that my total was 1313 and I gave him $20.13 and for some reason he did not know how to do the math and he gave me back my $.13 and said that he only owed me $6.87. So I gave them back to $.13 and said no you owe me seven dollars this is basic math. Then the manager comes out and gives me the dirtiest look like I'm Satan because I'm telling the guy How to count and do his job basically. This review is specifically for the modern avocado toast. My friend and I both ordered the modern avocado toast for a snack, I added a boiled egg. We took the order to go. The first thing I noticed is there was no flavor, it was very bland. But the quality of all the ingredients were fantastic. We ended up having to add lemon juice, garlic salt and a little bit of everything salt to make the the avocado toast come alive. The employee knowledge is wildly underwhelming. I called to place and order, and went online and had questions and no one seemed to be able to answer anything about the menu. Both places (online and callin) said to pay by Amex you must be in store. So I go in store and they tell me they don't take Amex anymore and dont take cash. It's not a detrimental experience but it's also pretty easy to align on things like this so that I'm not scrambling to pick up this giant order with no way to pay for it. read more

This place went down hill fast. When it first opened, it was top notch. But it's quality and staff time after time disappoints. First off, the food quality here has zero consistency. Case it point, the steak plate can be over cooked and bland one visit, and bleeding raw another. The thin crust pizza is also varying in thickness and crispness each visit. Then there's the lack of training - Ordering a curry salmon subbed with chicken should cause a price reduction, but the cashier doesn't know that nor acknowledge her mistake. Made us thinking we have to order through the app to get the right price. Go pay with their app, and find out your reward didn't auto trigger but the cashier just shrugs and says call the app company. Then there's the issue with portions. Go ask for more chimichurri sauce and you may get a little togo container of it with one tea spoon of sauce. Order a steak plate with extra meat and you can get the same amount as your friend who ordered no extra at all. That's all folks. If you can live with all that, by all means knock yourself out. read more
