A good friend had used them for extensive work around his house and we wanted someone we could trust. Modern has been awesome! Worst home improvement company I've ever hired. They installed a new roof. They positioned a down spout so that during a heavy rain, water is pouring down over the entry door drenching us. We had to insist that they fix it. They then positioned it so that the water goes into the gutter, which is how it should have been done. They did zero clean up, leaving our house and yard a complete disaster. We found 175 nails in our yard. When we hit 112 nails we called the company to complain. They sent someone over that spent 15 minutes and picked up a dozen. We continued to pick up nails every day in 100 degree weather. We had to buy a metal detector and a magnetic rake. I was so afraid that my dog would get hurt by stepping on a nail, since many of them face straight up like a huge thumb tack. They bounced old shingles off the house leaving our siding a mess. There were also pieces of old sharp shingles in our grass. They sent a power washer, at our insurance companies expense, to clean. Another disaster. We told him to PLEASE not leave a mess by our pool. He power washed the upper deck blowing all the debris into and around the pool. He also used chemicals that ran into our pool. He decided to use the spigot attached to our pool motor draining over a thousand gallons of water from our pool. This caused the pool to run without enough water potentially damaging the motor. The workers that installed the roof did work hard. I blame the company for the zero clean up effort. The workers arrived at 8 AM and worked until after 8PM in 100 degree heat. They literally worked until they dropped, they were laying in our yard. The next day, they were on to the next job. The company should have booked this as 2 day job and left a few hours for clean up. But they obviously just want to move on to the next job for more money, leaving the huge mess for the homeowner, which is dangerous in the case of so many nails. There were also a few scheduling issues. For example the day the power washer was to come and look at the house, he didn't show or call. the day the roofers were to come and install the gutter guards, they showed without enough materials and had to leave and return at a later time. I would NEVER hire this company again. I am going to get an inspector to look at the roof, because if they installed it correctly, it would be the only thing they did correctly. If you hire them to install your roof, you need to be young enough and healthy enough to spend days picking up nails in the heat. You will need a metal detector, a magnetic rake and combat boots for yourself and your dogs. Also be prepared to track a ton of dirt into your house unless you power wash the areas around your house, since it took weeks to get their power washer to show up. read more

I will never use this company again for anything. The initial quote of $2800 seemed steep to patch and repair some drywall in my kitchen ceiling and to paint the kitchen and the living room ceiling but I thought I would get quality work. This was not so. First of all, the drywall on the ceiling was not replaced as initially agreed to. The contractors just pained over the water mark and did not use the appropriate primer. I can still see the water mark on my ceiling. The contractors were supposed to remove the nails and paint the kitchen wall but they just painted over the nails and hung the pictures back on them. The caused one of the frames to fall and bust all over the floor. I was offered a $200 refund because they did not do what they were supposed to do in the first place, but I still wound up paying $2600 for a partial paint job in 2 rooms. I would encourage anyone who is looking for work to be done in their home to look elsewhere. The work is substandard and overpriced. Use my lesson to your advantage. Follow Up: After reading my review, one of the managers called me and offered an additional $400 refund bringing the total amount to $600. I do appreciate the extra effort to make this situation a little more palatable. read more

We had our Roofing materials replaced on the 9th of Feb 2021 by Modern Remodeling Inc. From the initial contact, through the selection of roofing products, to the post project review, they were attentive, professional and did not try to sell us more than we needed! They showed us all the options and let us decide what we wanted. As a former salesperson, I know the tricks they could have used and they just never went there. Honest and Professional were my thoughts about them throughout every contact I had with Modern Remodeling Inc. They coordinated with our insurance company's inspector / adjuster to determine the extent of the damage to our roof from a recent wind storm. After the offer came in from the insurance company, Modern Remodeling Inc., contacted our insurance company again and pointed out the additional roof work that was needed to meet the current building codes. The negotiations with the insurance company took about two weeks. Afterwards, we were going to receive approximately 90% of the cost of a new roof with added weather-related features. The whole job on the roof took only one day and the clean-up was excellent. We did not find one nail, staple or scrap of roofing material anywhere around our home. We recommended Modern Remodeling Inc., to our neighbors and now to you! The total experience was superior to any we have had in the past. About their honesty, let me say this: We had asked about doing a small side project and was surprised when Modern Remodeling Inc., called me to explain that my costs for the side project would be much greater than doing the side project with a company that specializes in that specific type of work. After checking on the side project costs, they were right on the money and SAVED us several thousand dollars. This showed us they knew what they were best at and what was best for us. Other companies may have taken advantage of us and just did the extra work with an additional Team. This company was doing work in my neighborhood and someone came by and asked if I would like any free estimates for work to be done. I invited them in and showed them a wall I am considering having removed and told them that I'd like a "ballpark estimate", knowing full well that there may be other costs and considerations. That was the first or second week in February. I had to follow up myself several times and long story short I had no estimates until March 12 where I was told it could be anywhere between $2500 and $15,000, and on April 2nd where I was told they had a $450 minimum charge to cut holes in my wall and explore and only then would they be able to give me a reasonable estimate. The $450 could be applied to the job if I choose to move forward with the work. $450 is a lot of money and seems WAY out of touch with the effort to use a drywall saw for some exploratory holes. read more

I recently used Modern Remodeling to replace the roof on our home. We had had previous damage to our roof as a result of wind storms which was repaired. Then we again experienced another wind storm (Halloween 2019) and was concerned that additional damage to the roof was possible. I was visited in late November by Ben Adler their field representative. To say that Ben was tenacious is an understatement. He worked diligently and aggressively with our insurance company to ensure that our claim would be excepted. When our claim was excepted and the work completed I was exceptionally pleased at the professional work and service. They properly cleaned up all of the debris from the installation and ensured that it was i spectre and approved by their QC field team. Their pricing reflected the quality of the work and paying for the project was relatively easy despite having to adhere to the insurance company requirement that everyone in the transaction needed to endorse all checks. we found the company because they were on our insurance list of contractors that work with our insurance company. We also knew friends who have used them in the past for other purposes than ours. I will start by saying they had the potential to do a fantastic job but due to some issues, possibly miscommunication I will say not so "wonderful" but not horrible either. We had a clean water toilet leak that was unseen until it came through the basement ceiling. Company showed up promptly with an "estimator" who happened to be AMAZING! However, he was not in charge of the project. We had wood floors in the bathroom that needed to be replaced , ceiling in the basement that needed to be replaced and the entire basement painted. The basement had specialty paint and was custom. The estimate to the insurance company stated this and was approved. The work took some time and during the many days there were many different workers (not the same as the days before. Paint was mediocre and even though they estimated and charged for taping and prep neither was EVER done. The paint near the ceiling (because it was not taped) looked awful as well as near the trim and windows. Basement previously had "stripes" of different colors and we opted for everything to just be one solid (easy) . There was no primer applied, only two coats of eggshell paint applied over semigloss. The lines for the prev stripes were very apparent and we thought as professionals they would know that light sanding would be necessary .The wood floors that needed to be replaced were done fantastic! The person they used knew exactly what he was doing and had great advice at how to make it look seamless. However, the person in charge of reinstalling the toilet (painter for some odd reason, not in anyway related to the floor guy) installed the toilet incorrectly and unknown to us was leaking again. This leak (had nothing to do with original leak) completely ruined the new floor that was put in. Honestly I think it was the person in charge of the project who was the issue. Others from the company were brought in after I complained about the paint (before the second toilet leak) and had solutions and fixed them themselves. and... did a great job. It took a while and the floors were never fixed after their error. To be honest I didn't want to deal with the project manager again and I may not have pursued. So... I just received and email asking to review them and I complied. Synopsis: I believe this company has amazing skills and work ethic. I do not recommend this company because of the way the business was conducted by a Sales Representative who drafted a contract for me to sign the roof replacement. His verbal statements and commitments promised during the conversation were different from the contract that he drafted for me to sign. He promised to change the gutters since it would be hard to re-attach to the roof even it was not specified in the insurance claim. However, only the gutter covers were marked in the service contract as the item to replace which is not what he promised verbally. Read really careful when signing the contract and do not go by his words and promises that will not be followed through. read more

I haven't worked with any of the people mentioned in positive reviews on yelp. But I definitely would not recommend Blayne or Chuck in Fairfax, VA. They appear to be something of storm-chasers, knocking on your door after strong storms and offering a free appraisal on any potential insurance claim damage. They are on the ball up front, and will be onsite with the insurance adjuster. I had a full roof replacement claim and partial siding from my insurance, and a claim check in just a few weeks. Surprisingly, that's when problems started. Blayne insisted on waiting for roof work until insurance approved a full siding replacement, and some additional minor work. They submitted a supplemental request. And that was the last I heard of Blayne. I spent a month trying to get a hold of him, before reaching a field supervisor. Chuck apologized profusely, and seemed to pick up the ball running, had one conversation with my insurance adjuster, then similarly went dark. No response to email, phone, or text. Their lack of communication and professionalism before the work even started still amazes me, when I had at least $23k in hand ready to pay them for the work. Work they came to me asking for. I can only assume the profit margin wasn't worth their effort, and they preferred to ghost me and waste /months/ of my time, while damage spread on my ceiling. There are a ton of remodeling companies out there, I suggest finding one who knows how to pick up a phone. Update: The owner Nathan called me very soon after seeing this review, to attempt to understand what happened and how to prevent the issue in the future. I appreciate that level of professionalism. I still wouldn't personally use them again, but I would also hate for a few bad apples to represent the entire company. I've had far more negative experiences with contractors than good, so when it came around to choosing someone to help with my project, I was very nervous. I'm really happy I made the decision to go with Modern Remodeling, who was recommended to me by a close friend. Specifically, I have been dealing with Jonathan Ballard who has been extremely helpful, honest, open, and communicative throughout the entire process. My home was hit with hail which resulted in the siding and roofing needing to be replaced. Jonathan came out, inspected the area, helped me understand what was entailed with the work, and also helped out with framing out my carport to convert it into a garage. Not only was Jonathan knowledgeable, but he was honest about what would be best for our home. Originally, I wanted to go with Hardie Board to obtain a specific look. While it was possible, Jonathan really felt that the work required to do it properly would be more than what I should spend on the total project. He convinced me to go with vinyl siding, which would be less maintenance and still keep the look I was going for. His crews for the roofing, siding, framing, and finishing were all extremely professional, prompt, and answered all my questions while they were working on the house. I can't say this enough, Jonathan, his crew, the folks at Modern Remodeling, Inc. are the best decisions I've made for my house. Nathan and his crew were very professional; prompt, efficient, competent. They told us exactly what to expect, and how the job would progress, and they delivered according to the pledged budget and schedule. They worked well with my insurance company for the siding portion of the job. We are very pleased with the results. As predicted, the total package made our home much cozier - no more drafts, much less heat loss/gain than with the old inefficient windows, and a significant drop in the traffic noise we used to hear from the street. Lesson learned. Do not go with the first company to knock on your door after a hail storm. And later to find out my insurance company didn't even recommend them. The whole process took about 4 months (for a new roof and gutters). Communication was terrible, dropping off completely after they collected our deposit. Sales rep was MIA for several weeks. After my husband called the Manassas office to complain and threaten to take our business elsewhere, the manager was very rude and told him we weren't getting our deposit money back from him. He did not care about customer service. Several other issues to include damaged material being delivered to do the job and us making them send it back and re-order. And having to come back out to fix a damaged area from their "completed" work. I would not use this company again and would not recommend it to my friends and neighbors.
