This salon needs some serious oversight by management. An owner from Charlotte needs to be in the salon more regularly to be sure customers are treated as paying clients. I made an appointment on October 23, 3025. I spent over 30 minutes on the phone going over the appointment- who was coming and what I needed. Not to mention my children have been clients at Modern since November 2024. When I arrived my appointment I was informed Hannah S doesn't honor kids rates. I replied that I'd had this appointment since October and this didn't seem like a problem for me to solve. She "agreed" to take my kids. She first took my 6 year old. I told her she needed a good trim to get off all the dead ends as she hadn't had a cut in a long time. She cut so little I could not even see hair on the floor. I asked (trying to be polite) if she thought she took enough. From wash to blow dry the cut took 25 minutes (someone else did the wash). She then took my 10 year old. She spent the appointment interrogating my 10 year old about her age and then had the nerve to tell her that the records were wrong. I went back during her hair cut -- if she had any questions -- those were for me the parent. My daughter said outside of asking about her age and incorrect records she didn't say a word to her otherwise. Again - my child has been a client at this salon for over one year - if they don't have correct records that's on Modern -- not me (or a 10 year old kid). At check out Hannah was pleasant and directed me to someone in my "price range." I still paid 45 bucks for hair cut that hardly even occurred. My stylist lacked personality and figured nd her demeanor cold and aloof. I came in with photos of previous color services and was told it wasn't able to be done with the two hour service. Please note it's a full head (shoulder length) foil bleach/toner highlight lifting 4 levels. I received same service but made darker and copper toner. My one request was not to go out orange. Guess what color I was given. Cost was higher than originally quoted. This doesn't cover the lack of check ins or offering any beverages which was offered to others. read more

Almost dread trying to make an appointment to get my hair done or walking in to see if there's any openings or gonna make an appointment online. It's just a lot of uncertainty so I was out at Birkdale yesterday and decided I know there's some awesome salons out here. let me call one of them and see if they have anything available. They had a nice website page and I was able to see there was a lot of availability hours so I stopped right there and went ahead and called and she was so helpful and just had the most pleasant voice like she was so glad I was calling the business and wanted to help me so much. Got me an appointment. I actually walked to it. I had to use my phone cause it was on the other side of this beautiful area you could spend a whole day in Birkdale And there's a movie theater as well. My stylist is Ivis Jaco and she is absolutely marvelous. She listened to every word I had to say very carefully did exactly what I asked her to do. I've never seen anyone work that hard to dry my hair and then even check it when it was dry to make sure every single thing was perfect. I've never had such a good haircut. Service here was good. What I didn't like was that the only person who was allowed to work on a mat, to relieve the constant pressure from working on your feet all day, was pregnant. No one else was allowed to work on a mat. To me, that's just not far. What about a woman who "can't," get pregnant and would love to have the opportunity for a baby...and to work on a mat. It's not fair to others that work just as hard on their feet all day. I've been pregnant and I've worked in retail on concrete floors. So I do get. if you're wondering if this place is worth the risk it's not I hated every bit of my experience here my haircut was OK. I feel like the girl didn't really know what she was doing. There were also other coworkers of hers lined up, watching and staring at us the whole time, and it seems like they also knew she didn't know what she was doing. She was not friendly at all and then they charge me $65 for just a dry cut that took about 20 minutes when they told me over the phone that they would adjust the price. I went there for a balayage- I have dark brown hair !! I wanted to go light brown and ashy. I got a cut as well. I was in the chair for 7 hours - no joke !!! The color I get can be sometimes unpredictable. But the technique was poor. I was charged 148 ... and I hated it. The color and technique did not mesh. it looked as though it was foils that had grown out and not placed evenly to boot. See photos. I had called Shannon the manager and she said since i " changed my mind " they would not correct it for free nor did they offer to give a discount on correction services. The cut also was not layered it was a trim -- there was no cleaning up the layers in order to make a fresh cut. Therefore not allowing the horrible color to even maybe look good. I was so upset they told me to come in and get a consultation to review it and see what I now wanted. This salon has gone down hill since it is no longer Aveda. The stylist I had do my hair, Brittney washed my hair and cut it so fast that I left not noticing how crooked it was until I washed it myself . When they blow it dry they curl it so you can't tell if it crooked . . First I told her 1 inch and she took over 3 inches off my length and layers and gave me an undercut . Why undercut when my My hair was down to the middle of my back , now it's butchered with crooked layers . Britney also chopped the left side with a 3 inch cut across like a step . ( see pic below ) This is the second time this place butchered my hair . Why did I go back ? When it was Aveda I never had problems . I called today and explained to them how I need it fixed and made app with a senior stylists . Then ,they called me back and said they messed up and I have to pay the difference . I had Hannah as my Stylist. To start, and I didn't catch this fast enough, my hair grows from the top of my head and I sweep it to the side, when I asked to go a bit shorter I didn't realize that usually a barber would even my hair around my head so it would all be equidistant. My hair was cut while all on one side, meaning it's much shorter on the left side than the ride, which creates a large imbalance. I came in with a very clear idea of what I wanted and made sure I communicated that with my stylist, I got a lot of "yeah, yeah, right" which I assumed was just her way of acknowledging but she only vaguely did what I asked and took her own direction in some of the worst places. I explicitly asked Hannah "are you comfortable with doing line art" she said yes. I originally wanted it to curve down to the bottom of my hair like I had gotten at my previous barber but I realized I didn't know this person and she suggested shorter lines which I figured meant she wasn't comfortable with the full curve. The lines on the first half of my head looked good, the hair above each line was a little angular which typically you'd trim down but that's not a big deal. When it came to the other side they were *very* imbalanced, one side was much higher than the other. Typically if you're doing something like this with symmetry it's a good idea to wrap a string around or use some other point of reference to make sure it stays even. After the line she was constantly reaffirming how good it looked and if I loved it, at the time I was okay with the result, I didn't catch the mistakes yet so I said yes. When I look back, with how much she was asking I think she already knew she screwed up and wanted to make sure I didn't notice. My real eye opener was taking a shower immediately as I got home because I didn't like how the product sat. It was a far cry from what I actually asked for. Now when I put my hair up in a pony tail I have very uneven lines on my head and choppy hair pulled back because each section is a completely different length. As a person I had no problem with Hannah, she was nice enough and didn't really leave anything to complain about, but it very much irritates me when a novice agrees to something they have no practice in and asks no leading questions for what direction to take. read more

After reaching out to the salon manager, and sending pictures of my hair from my appointment 2/1, they offered to try to fix it again (this would be the 4th treatment, as she tried to fix it multiple times the day of services). I do not feel comfortable having the same person work on my hair again, after she tried to fix it 3 times, and consulted other stylists, before I left the salon. I was there over 4 hours, with my commute it was over 6.5 hours. Not to mention I'm not sure how many more chemicals my hair can handle before being severely damaged. I have been having my hair professionally colored and treated for over 15 years, so while by no means am I an expert, I do know my hair and what to expect. After moving to North Carolina 4 years ago, I had a really difficult time finding a stylist or salon near me that could meet or exceed my expectations. I was so pleased and excited when I found Modern Salon in Huntersville. Not only was the environment what I was looking for, but I had consistent results each time. I adored Alisha Hagan, and was sad when she didn't return from maternity leave. After trying several times to find someone near me, I came back to Modern, and had an equally excellent experience with Amy Cain. But the drive is a lot, so I took another chance and found someone near me that I love, but my hair was darker then I wanted last time, and I wanted to treat myself to the Modern experience. I have never had this happen with highlighting. It was my expectation to get a little lighter, and add in more highlights, which was accomplished at the ends, which were already pretty light, and cool toned from my last treatment about 4 weeks prior (not at Modern). My hair is orange on at the roots, and cool toned blonde on the ends. I don't know what she did, or why it happened, but everything we discussed in the consultation was cool tones, silvery. And I expressed the the importance of not wanting any brassy warm tones before she touched my hair. I reached out to let them know how much I appreciated them trying to remedy this situation, and that I appreciate the stylist recognizing the issues right away, and trying to fix my hair at the time. However, I don't think it is reasonable to spend another 2.5-3 hours driving, and an unknown amount of time at the salon, to have her make another (4th) attempt on my hair. I requested a refund for the services rendered on Saturday, February 1, 2020. (Not the product I purchased), but unfortunately they won't refund. I'm very disappointed, I don't think I should have any more chemicals on my hair for a while because I don't want it to fall out or damage it further. Modern is professional and committed to making sure you are satisfied with your hair. I have used Tiffany a few times and she is amazing - works magic and fast! It is critical that you get someone who knows what their doing and listens to what YOU want as a client. I had one of their stylists a few years ago to cut my hair way shorter than I asked and said don't worry, it will grow back. Just make sure you vet you stylist well. Unfortunately, I have developed an allergy to their new product line and have to go back to an Aveda salon but this is a great salon and would recommend to others. read more

I am so sad. I sit here a few hours after my appointment at 10pm crying and sad because I just spent $400 on hair that looks horrible. I thought it looked good three hours after staring at my phone aimlessly scrolling in the chair, but once I left and was in my car I knew it was not what I wanted or what I had asked for. I waited almost two years to allow my natural hair to grow and this is what I'm left with a brassy, streaky mess. I asked for it not to be streaky and I was going for blonde but not all one solid color (Included pictures I showed)! I even asked about balayage and she said no. I should have trusted my gut. I went in last week and saw Lauren (a "senior stylist") Super nice girl. But she literally did NOTHING like what I asked her to do to my hair. I showed her a picture and said I wanted to go darker with subtle highlights around my face. When it was done it was BLONDER. I immediately started saying I didn't think it looked right and it had too much of a reddish tone somehow and wasn't dark enough and she straight up just told me it looked exactly how it was supposed to and I needed to see it in different lighting. But I was telling her it didn't look right and she didn't careI felt so uncomfortable and it was so late I knew she was just rushing me out. She kept saying "don't you love it?!" Over and over and I felt so uncomfortable I just said yes and left. I tried really hard over the last few days to get used to it and like it but it's the exact opposite of what I wanted and I'm beside myself that I spent $300 for my hair to look horrible. Stylists: your clients are literally always right. Hate to break it to you but it's THEIR body. If they don't like it, no matter what the excuse, fix it. Don't argue with them. It's belittling and mean. Now I'm embarrassed to try to go back because she made me feel so bad. But felt like making sure everyone else knew my experience. UPDATE: Emily was AMAZING. She fixed my hair so perfectly and couldn't have been any nicer. I am blown away by today's experience at this salon. DO NOT RECOMMEND: I was scheduled for full highlights with Emily at the Birkdale location. I asked for some low lights because my hair was getting very solid. She did a partial and pulled a few strands in the back and Emily said I only needed a partial. At the end of the appointment, she half-styled my hair and I had to leave with partially wet hair because she said I was done. I was very upset because we had Christmas pictures scheduled on that Saturday. I went home and finished drying and styling my hair. I noticed afterward that around the sides of my face were dark chucks/strips from the low lights. I called early on Monday morning to see if someone could give me highlights just around my face to fix the problem. The receptionist or person that answered the call said she would call me back within the hour and someone would fix it.is not working today and no one was available to fix my hair. I asked for another location. She said she thought there were 45 minutes available at another location but I would have to leave with a wet head again. I said that would be fine to get my hair fixed. She finally called back 45 minutes later saying she could not get my hair fixed for two to three days. I DO NOT recommend Modern Salon & Spa, Birkdale location. When I arrived they told me the stylist I originally had my appointment with had to leave for the day and I could see another stylist at a lower level. No one took the time to notify me via phone call of this change. I agreed to see the junior stylist for highlights and a hair cut. I specifically asked for ( with great detail) a mid length bob with dimension and texture. Instead, I got a hideous looking bowl shaped mom bob!! And to add insult to injury, my highlights turned out weird shade of yellow. Modern Salon should be ashamed of themselves for charging $258.00 with a junior stylist that does a poor job. Ok, now I will say I liked Theresa and i even like the color she gave me. But for over 400.00 for a hair cut and highlights, wow, that is robbery. First when they make you sign an agreement to pay for a service because the price is outrageous, you already know they are overcharging you. But I moved from NY and CT and I have had my hair done at Adam Broderick and frederic fekkai in NY and its had never cost as much as in Cornelius NC. After I called to have color added to my appointment, I spoke to, Morgan, and she was incredibly rude, had an attitude and unwilling to answer any questions. I have been debating on whether or not to post anything - as I had a wonderful experience with the stylist - who I will leave unnamed on here. She was so friendly and bubbly and truly made the time I spent there fun; however, I left there knowing that there was something about my cut that I really didn't like and I couldn't quite figure it out. I had asked for a shoulder length "bob" - and as we talked through my likes and dislikes, I mentioned that a slight angle to the bob would be okay - and she told me we would have to go just a little bit shorter in the back to make that happen, which I did agree to. She curled my hair and from the front - she knocked it out of the park, but there was something about the back that I didnt like... the next day I washed and styled my own hair and finally saw the problem. My hair in the front is literally touching my collarbone - in the back, it's so short I can barely get it up into a low ponytail, there is like a three inch different between the front and the back- there isn't really an angle to this cut at all - it's straight across in the back, so blunt with no layers or thinning of my ends (and my hair is thick), and then it's just suddenly long in the front. I hate to say this, but looks terrible and I am already taking supplements packed with Biotin in hopes this grows back as fast as possible. Thankfully, I have been able to laugh about it with my boyfriend, to stop me from crying - but even he agrees and said it's a complete mess in the back and hopes I can find someone to help me correct this. I've been going to this salon for four months now. $190 for a root touch-up, blowout and flat ironing is a little much...The two stylists that I've seen are all about up-selling, regardless of whether you need the service or not...it was only because I questioned the reasoning for the proposed additional color services (and the fact that the stylist confirmed that the color would fade out within a couple of shampoos because of my hair type), that I realized that they would've been a waste of a lot of money... I remember looking at her with astonishment and thinking, "where you really going to charge me again for that knowing that it wasn't going to last?" Also, I was previously charged for a service that was not performed (a haircut, which I discovered when I asked for the cashier to verbally itemize my bill). When I questioned it, they confirmed with the stylist that I had indeed not had a haircut that day. Most recently I was charged an additional $20 for a flat iron service...that's in addition to the extra charge for the blowout! I was not asked by Amy if I wanted to have my hair flat ironed, nor was I told that there was an additional charge to do so. She simply told her assistant to flat iron my hair, without giving me the option...I assumed it was part of the blowout service, since she had quickly blown out my hair in large sections...every customer should be able to walk into a salon and feel pampered; and not to have it ruined when they go to the register and they find out about the hidden charges that were added to their bill; however, if that doesn't bother you then you'll fit right in... Personally, I like to choose how I spend my money... I don't like others spending my money for me, regardless of the amount... It's a real shame that this a salon chooses nickel and dime their customers. What should've been a relaxing and enjoyable experience turned into me feeling like I had to be on top of things all the time; and sure enough, when I checked out, I found out about the additional charge for the flat Ironing service. It's too bad because it's a nice salon. I'm giving them one star because the hidden charges are a deal breaker. If you do decide to go here be wary, don't feel intimidated about asking questions, and by all means make sure you understand what you're being charged for before you check out... I got partial highlights and a basic trim, no style. Out the door 3.5 hrs later with wet hair (my choice) at 135.00 plus a tip. I've been going here for years and this place is really great. I've had several of the stylists -- Jordan, Jenn, Tori, and Amberlynn. Most recently I had asked for a balayage with extra highlighting around the face. Then I ended up not loving the extra highlight and Amberlynn was super professional about fixing it exactly how I wanted. I regret to say that I don't think I'll go back as I love this location! I will say the stylists are technically proficient and have the skill set and education needed for their professions with the exception of listening to their clients. I have been to three different stylists starting with junior stylist for basic hair cut then moved on to senior stylists when going for a new look and my first time dying my hair at age 40. On all three occasions I did not get what I asked for and even once got exactly what I said I DID NOT want which was layers framing my face. This last time I said I wanted to go bold with my first round of highlights. I said drastic and want people to notice immediately. I left with a color that looked like I put some Sun In in my hair and after spending an hour with my sisters one finally said "did you do something to your hair". That "bold" coloring cost me $250. The salon is very clean and has a great environment. I've been with three different hair stylists and Jordan is by far the best! Highly recommend this salon to anyone. It's a tad bit pricey but it's worth it! read more
