I had an overall positive experience in the salon and with Manny. He gave me a very flattering haircut. The pricing was very reasonable and my result was similar to the inspiration picture I provided. The staff was fast to get me seated and very polite. I'm not into small talk and Manny didn't give me much chit-chat which I truly appreciated. I will note that he was too rough with the blow dryer and brush. The skin on my scalp felt like it was being torched. But he salvaged the situation by lowering the heat when he noticed me wince. read more

Botched my hair then expected me to pay to fix it! I had an appointment at this salon, but was not seen for an hour and 15 minutes after my appointment time. They said there was a wedding party that took a long time which pushed everyone else back. If that was the case, why didn't I receive a phone call to notify me that they needed to push my appointment? I requested a balayage style and showed pictures. I explained that I want the top darker (darker than the bottom as the picture showed), then she asked me if I wanted my roots darker and I told her no. When she started with a solid color on my roots, I was confused, but this was the owner so I trusted her. She then pulled another stylist over, Honey, to complete my "highlights". Now, it's hard for me to fault Honey completely because, unbeknownst to me, she was already working with completely dyed roots. When I finally saw the final product, I had to fight back tears. It looked like I had dark brown hair with highlights that had grown out for 10 months. Honey tried to add a few highlights to the top to soften it but it didn't really work. Honey assured me that it will look great when the color settles and when my hair is curled (so I look ridiculous if I want to straighten it?!). Two days later, I finally curled it to go out and started crying. It looked terrible and I was leaving for Mexico in a couple days. I called and the owner answered but said they were closed that day (Monday) and that I could come get it fixed Tuesday, but at their other, much further location. I had to work and there was no way for me to get out there before Mexico, so I asked her if there was anything I could do to soften the color. She suggested clarifying shampoo ($25) and I also bought purple shampoo to pull out the brassiness in the blonde highlights. This did help a little but nowhere near what I had asked for. Once I got back from Mexico, I called the salon to come in to get it fixed, which is what the owner told me to do. I was then informed that it would cost money to fix it since it "had been so long since my appointment". WHAT? There were 3 days when I tried to 'make it work', 2 days where they were closed, then a week that I was in Mexico. That was a final straw for me. I will never go back to this salon. read more

I love the environment, the experience is relaxing. Nina always does wonders with my hair! She is very sweet and great with color. I have went from natural dark brown hair to platinum blonde, so my hair has been through a lot. I know that when I go to get my hair done, I'm in good hands and that my hair will look beautiful when I walk out. I've came here for color and many of my favorite hair cuts. (Bangs, long bobs, short bobs, pastel extensions, etc.) Very talented and caring hair artists. Also, they make sure to keep the integrity of your hair, taking the steps to healthy and lovely hair. I will go back soon for a haircut and a root touch up as I plan on staying platinum blonde. Oh! They also offer Keratin and Olaplex which is a good choice when having such a BIG change in color. I was recommended here by a friend because I wanted a place that would cut my hair to donate. I walked in on a Friday afternoon (without an appointment) and was told that a lot of the stylists were still at lunch so it would be about 25 minutes before I would be helped. I didn't have a problem waiting so I sat down in a chair. At about the 20 minute mark a stylist started sweeping the floors, but the receptionist was quick to get her attention and let her know that I was waiting. The stylist (I think her name was Tammie) then started helping me right away. I asked her to take a picture of my long hair before and she was super nice about getting a good photo. She cut my hair in a ponytail so I could donate it myself and gave me a bag for it. They cut my hair, washed it, blow-dried and straightened it all for $40. I was out in about 1-1.5 hours. First time I visited, I asked for the Ombre look by working in bayalage highlights. The girl says she does them all the time, and I need darker roots to contrast blonde highlights. I've never had brown hair, but she assures me she's going to match my natural color roots. She gave me a DARK, drab brown with absolutely no dimension. I thought about it, and decided regular old brown wasn't too bad. It offered me a different look for a few months. Sooo, I decide to try Modern Salon again, but try a new hairstylist. Bad decision! Second time I visit, I tell hairstylist I would like to go more natural and get away from the brown. She complied and made my ombre roots a red. Beautiful, if it weren't for the bright orange/red hot roots! As a stylist for Modern Salon for 8 years (her words) this was an amateur mistake. Mistakes happen though. The next day I take more time off work and return so they can fix their mistake. They work to fix the mistake. While the color is processing I'm told that A BLOW DRY WITH A ROLL BRUSH WILL COST ME **AFTER I HAD TO TAKE TIME OFF FROM WORK TO GO HAVE *THEIR* MISTAKE FIXED**. I sit and wait and think: Any second they will realize I'm not here because I want to be; I'm here because your employee made a mistake and I had to take time off from work to drive back to your salon to have you FIX your mistake. No. They repeatedly tell me I will have to pay for a blow dry. UNACCEPTABLE! I ask to speak to a manager or the owner. Nobody came to speak with me. A few stylists said some words to each other in another language...Vietnamese maybe. I am again told I will have to pay. I explain why I shouldn't - *I'm here so you can fix YOUR MISTAKE* and will be going straight into the office because I didn't plan to have to come back so you can fix your mistake. No manager or owner comes to speak with me. The girl blow drying my hair pulls out a roll brush and half asses a blow dry. I'm guessing someone had some sense and told her to blow dry my hair a little since I HAD TO TAKE TIME OUT OF MY DAY TO SO THEY CAN FIX THEIR MISTAKE. Take what you want from that story. If you are going to try to charge me for a blow dry with a roll brush after I had to make special arrangements SO YOU CAN FIX YOUR MISTAKE, I will not be visiting your salon again. Back to looking for another salon where I will spend hundreds and and hundreds of dollars a year (simple truth), won't need to go back to fix an amateur mistake, but if I do, I will not be charged for a BLOW DRY AFTER HAVING TO RETURN So YOU CAN FIX YOUR MISTAKE. Worst highlight job ever. It's hit or miss I guess, I asked for subtle highlights on the top only and ended up with Chunky red (near candy apple red) highlights. And I have medium dark brown hair. I went back and all they did was add an ash toner. The only other option given was to go really dark. Not sure what kind of toner they used. It is now nearly black with chunky even redder (candy apple) highlights. See the photo attached... and the stylist kept telling me how pretty the highlights were like I am blind or something... And to think the rude owner had the nerve to tell me "I can tell you do your own color" ( and I had been doing my roots the last couple times). So I endure rude comments, long waits, only to end up with highlights that look worse than if I did them myself. Grhhhh. The place is nice and some of the stylist are very personable (not the owner) but why gamble? After I went, I found out one friend has had good luck but then she took her SIL and they did to her the same outcome as me, she ended up with Red highlights.. I'll never go again not for color anyhow. And they don't refund bad colors treatments. My God, how can they do this to anyone and charge for it??? Update : My hair is now back to normal. After a couple months I couldn't stand it anymore. So off to Sallys I go. Sallys products: Color Fix Color remover (twice), Yes your hair turns orange. Don't worry just color again. I used Loreal Light Ash brown color with 10% developer on my roots and 20% on the rest. Then I went to another salon for a re-do of subtle high lights. It still makes my angry at their laziness in fixing my hair. If I could fix it why couldn't they? Now my hair color really looks good. Don't bother going back there if they screw up your color, they will just make it worse. You can't add color to fix color and they should know that. But the colorist are LAZY!! Just go somewhere else or try to fix it yourself with the advise of a Sally's beautician. :-) I would recommend Nina for a cut because she did that well. Too bad she works for a place with such poor colorists. My hair is baby fine and fragile. My friends that have had better luck there have thick Hispanic hair that can take the abuse but recently a few ended up with terrible color treatment. They have not had their hair fried and over processed like I did there. And yes, they apologized for recommending the place to me... Anyhow they are starting to shy away from going there for color due not them not getting the tones or type of highlights right. These guys can't do an ombre for example... Seems like they specialize in Zebra stripe highlights. :-( read more

A couple of things this IS: -awesome -WELL priced (dare I say, CHEAP for what you get?!??!) -randomly placed -clean & modern -a pleasant surprise A couple of this this place is NOT: -overpriced -centrally located -expected I'm surprised there aren't any reviews on here for this salon. Yes, it's in the middle of nowhere: a good 30 minute drive from my in-town stomping grounds, but on a whim and discouraged by paying $250 for a cut and color, I went here on a tip from a friend. The salon is very clean and well decorated. The stylists are professional and friendly. You can make an appointment, but often times they take people on a first come first served basis. I've made appointments before and waited, and I've not made appointments and been seen right away. Long is the owner and does AWESOME work; the owners oversee all of the work being done, are very personable and take pride in what they do. No stylist goes unattended without a double check from them. I've also had Sue and Manny do my hair, both of whom did an amazing job. I have long, unyielding, curly THICK hair, so I'm not exactly a stylists' dream client. Full foil highlights (two tone), cut, style, etc. runs me about $100 and they do fantastic work. I ask to gradually go a LITTLE lighter. However she put bleach in my hair and kept it in the foils for a very long time therefore my hair was extremely damaged, hair burnt off. Disclaimer: I am not from Houston so I cannot compare this salon to anything else in the area. However, went here with my little sister to get her hair done for prom, and had an excellent experience. My sister's appointment was for 10:30 AM and by 10:35 AM she was in the stylist's chair in a semi private room with a stylist who knew EXACTLY what hair style she was going for. The stylist was extremely friendly to both of us (despite my being the overly proud big sister with a camera) and made my sister feel very calm and relaxed despite her being very tender-headed. Yes, it is in an area that I at least found a little secluded. However, the salon itself is very elegant, clean, and jam packed with clients which says a lot. Most importantly, the price for an elegant up-do was very reasonable. I would most definitely return. read more

I'm not from Houston but was in town visiting family and wanted to take my DIL for a pedicure. They had openings and told us to come in. It was the worst we've ever had. We had to have them warm up the water twice. The massage function on the chair wasn't working properly. The girl who did mine didn't know what she was doing so the other girl had to instruct her. She was so light in her massage of my feet and legs that it was like it wasn't even done. Very disappointed & I do not recommend this salon for pedicures. read more

Recently my regular stylist moved to Austin and I started looking for a new place that was closer to my home. This is a wonderful location for those of us who live in the "dead zone" between 610 and the beltway, and 249 and 290. 10 Minutes from my house; well priced and offers a full service to the clients. I stopped in after work, I didn't have an appointment as I kinda wanted to see what it was like. It was a fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I was introduced to the team, told that absolutely they could take care of me, and they did a quick look at hair that hadn't been dealt with in 5 months, recognized immediately what I needed and off we went. Everyone was professional, quick, answered questions, explained what was going on, and offered recommendations without pushing product. The location is clean, neat, and very unexpected. My hair was colored (2 color foil highlights), and my stylist blended it in so well that you would have thought this was my natural color. She trimmed up the ragged edges and gave me a beautiful style that I can redo for work. I was extremely impressed, and really had a good time with everyone there. It was fun, and I love, ABSOLUTELY LOVE, everything about the experience, and so did my wallet. I already pre-booked my next appointment and the team was nice enough to put a notice in my phone calendar (I am technically challenged.) If you are looking for a no nonsense salon, with excellent stylists, a welcome price, and a good atmosphere, this is the place to come. read more

I am new to houston. I decided to give Modern Salon a try. The reviews are mixed on city search, but I took a risk. I went back a few times b/c the cut is ok....and I wasn't too familiar with other places. Everytime I go in for a cut, I end up wasting half of my day. I am sick of them not keeping their appts. However, I'm giving 1 star, not for the wait time, but for their attitude on having their clients wait. They simply think it's acceptable (personally, i think they get a kick out it...thinking they're all that). The funny thing is: They pretend to be "high-end", but the salon chaos is like shopping at WalMart on a busy Saturday afternoon....except u might get more courteous service at WalMart. I wish I could give 5 stars but my main concern is that one stylists started on my hair & by the end of my service I had a total of 5 different girls working on my hair. I went in for all over color....bleached blonde. The toner was left on too long & turned my hair a purple tinted color that took over a week to fade out. I will not be returning! I recently visited this location and feel very compelled to share my god awful experience with the hair stylists. First, when I called to get a quote on a particular hair color service I was quoted 2 different prices but ok there might be flexibility based on hair type so whatever. Secondly, I asked the stylist to match my roots to my hair color. She assured me she could no problem. I noticed the dye had no red in it so I pointed out that my hair had a red mixture. She went on to explain about the different colors in my hair that were clearly red but yet tried to tell me that everyone sees color differently?? She again assured me the warm brown would match it. So at this point, my hair color was on. I then got a pedicure by Reyna which was great, no complaints there. Lastly, as soon as my hair was washed I saw that my hair was brown not red like it had before. I ofcourse got very upset and voiced my concerns about the color. The stylist tried to tell me she had matched it and she had not! She dyed my hair brown when it was red! She then proceeded to blow dry my hair and then handed me off to some other stylist who finished drying my hair. The stylists knew I was not happy with the results yet proceeded to ignore it. After the girl finished, she left me sitting there until the first stylist came back and directed me to pay at the counter as if I should just know that. I was livid yet the manager at the counter seemed completely devoid of empathy. I didn't complain, I couldn't and so I left. So please, for those who appreciate good service, do yourselves a favor and take your business elsewhere. read more

I showed the stylist (Tracy) a photo of Gisele, asking to dye my blonde highlights to match my roots and add a few low-contrast peek-a-boo caramel highlights. I got espresso brown hair (which they tried to insist was my natural color even though I held a lock over an eyebrow and it was at least four shades darker) with horrible, skunky-looking bleached highlights. I will now have to spend about $500 over the next 6 months on correct color treatments to get my hair back to a decent shade. And maybe the kicker to it all? When I was talking with the stylist and the owner (Manager? She was never formally introduced.), I said I'd pay for the cut but not the color and the owner said no, I had to pay for the color, too. Oh, thank you so much. I really appreciate the opportunity to waste money on the worst dye job of my life. Save yourself the money and aggravation and go somewhere that employs technically competent stylists and won't charge you for their mistakes. read more

Bad experience. Last vist. Appomtment was made to be with Tammy. When i arrived gave me to Jennifer, who did my cut last time. I went along with it since I did not want to appear rude and was told Tammy hadnt had lunch(it was 3 pm). Jennifer did an ok cut, but it was not like the picture. We talked about just a few highlights in a platunum/silver tone and of coure she did more which is typical, so they can get you back. The highlights, however, turned out bluish purplish gray. Jennifer said they will fade, but I am sure she thought I wanted to hear this. My family and I have had some good laughs about my edgy purpleishbluishgrayisg highlights. I mean I might not be ur frequence client does not u can disrespect my business and just give me a half ass haircut because u didn't wanna ur other client to be waiting and even try to curl it to cover it up. I heard about this salon from a friend and I have been going there ever since. My stylist is Manny and he cuts my hair with only a razor, which I love. He did a great job on the color as well. Yes they are busy and someone different always washes or blow dries my hair but it is efficient and fast. Not a fan of the way the blow dry my hair but that's just me. The best part is the price, you cannot find a salon that will color your hair for their price. Just make sure you are clear about what you want done and ask for Manny. read more

So, I've been coming to this salon for about 8 years now. The key is to find a stylist you love and stick with her/him. Hanna has been the only one to color/cut my hair, except for ONE time and I definitely regretted letting someone else do it. Your stylist needs to not only be your stylist, but your "friend" as well. You have to voice your opinion and speak up if you are unhappy and I think that's the reason a lot of people have left negative reviews. If you see them doing something questionable, SPEAK UP. My ONLY complaint would be that they have constantly attempted to pass me off to other stylists while I'm waiting for Hanna and I just tell them nope. I only want Hanna. She knows my hair and what can and cant be done to it. One of the stylist tried to tell me they couldn't get my hair as light as I wanted it so I immediately called Hanna over and she said yes, we can because she knows how well my hair lifts. She is amazing at what she does and I honestly believe she is one of the best stylists at this salon. She always TRIES to do what I ask, even if she doesn't think it'll come out exactly how I want it to (which is pretty much always has because she's a BA). I totally trust her with my hair. I have gone to one other salon in the past 8 years was so unhappy with the results. I'm will probably come to Hanna for the rest of my life! She's an amazing colorist! I have been coming to this salon off and on for 10 years. Today is my last visit. The concern for the clients time seems to escape the employees. I always schedule my appointments for 10:00am, when the salon opens. The employees (including my stylist) arrive at ten, unlock the doors at that time and proceed to get the salon ready. If I have an appointment at 10:00 I would think they would be ready to start at ten. If it happened occasionally it wouldn't be so frustrating but it's all good now, I'm done with them. I'm also uncertain if having two dogs (owners dogs) in the salon running around is even legal in Texas. I do like the fact Modern Salon is reasonable, cost wise, but the lack of consideration by the owner & stylist has me saying goodbye to this salon. read more

When the stylist approached me and asked what i wanted, I showed her a picture and she said they couldnt do it because it would damage my hair. But every single client they had in there was also getting her hair bleached. I have never felt so rejected at a hair salon. If you have curly hair, dont go here. I have been coming to this salon for over 10 years. On my last visit, they completely forgot about me and left the color on too long. I have a scalp burn and my hair has fallen out. I am being treated by my dermatologist now. Equally as bad - the owner (after I have been a loyal customer every 8-10 weeks for OVER 10 years) told me it was my fault and refused to reimburse me for the bad visit and refused to reimburse me for my medical expenses. I have been going to this salon for about 3 years for hair cut and color. One thing I have noticed is that this salon is not concerned about good customer service. To get to the main desk where they take your time, you walk through all the chairs and stylists. You aren't greeted by anyone until you get to the reception desk. It seems like the employees are not happy there, they're just comfortable if it makes sense. I haven't had complaints about this place until my last visit. I told the girl that I wanted a blonde ombre hair. I ended up with highlights. The problem was probably that I have thick long hair, so I'm sure I'm every stylist nightmare. Well, the owner was very nice and told me to come back. Another girl did my hair the second time and it was better. However; I was charged $20 for a hair dry with a rolled brush. I don't quite understand why I was charged for that the second time if I went because of a mistake they did. Anyways, I'm not sure if I will go back to this place.
