My first experience here was amazing, and yesterday it was horrible. I made an appointment, and when I got there I think they thought I was a walk-in because they didn't ask if I had made an appointment, what my name was, nothing. I told them I needed the dip gel removed and re-done, and they said ok, but left me standing around with no direction for several minutes. Finally someone pointed to a chair and told me to pick out a color for the dip powder. I think I was waiting for 10 minutes before someone came and sat down across from me. The person who was putting on the acetone and foil was a man, and he might have been a manager (he was doing multiple things and probably not a nail technician). He seemed really annoyed, which is fine since we all have bad days, but I kept trying to ask him a question in a normal and audible tone of voice and he wouldn't even look up at me until I asked him very loudly if I could have a 20 minute massage from someone while my nails soaked. He said yes but was very dismissive and I felt really awkward... Fast forward 5 minutes, and there was no update on whether or not a masseuse was available. I asked the nail technician who was doing the nails of the woman next to me if it was possible to get a massage, and she said yes (I know this was not in her control whatsoever, but it lead me to believe someone was around). 10 minutes in, then 15 minutes in, then 20 minutes, and finally 25 minutes later, someone came over to remove the dip powder. At this point my fingers felt very uncomfortable and I've never waited 30 minutes with my nails soaking. During this time, there was a woman who came in to get a gel fill, and she sat down and told the man (same one who put the acetone on my nails) what she wanted and I turned around because I could hear she wasn't happy, and at that moment neither was I. He and the technician next to him were trying to convince her of something, and the woman responded "I've never had to do that before. This doesn't feel right, I'm going next door", and left before getting anything done. At this point I thought it was better if I left too, but someone had just sat down and I told the woman removing the dip powder "I just want it removed but I don't want new powder anymore." Well, the woman, along with the technician working on the woman next to me, kept telling me to stay, even though I was making it clear I just wanted it removed and that's it.... I also said I didn't have another hour and a half to sit there to get the dip powder put on, and they both said it would only take half an hour.... Um, it has NEVER taken half an hour, it has always taken an hour and a half after the dip powder is removed (including the first time I came here). It's always a 2 hour process from start to finish. I said "you're telling me you can do a whole new dip powder, with a design, in half an hour???" They both said yes. OKAYYYY, well at this point I already knew I wasn't coming back and I just wanted to get this over with. It obviously didn't take half an hour, it took one hour. So a half hour less than usual. However, that half hour made a difference. She completely changed the shape even though I told her I wanted the same shape I had, just shorter. Then, I kept telling her I wanted the base clear, and she kept trying to get me to do a light pink. She finally ended up doing the clear base, but I should've only had to say it once. Then, I showed her the color for the design, and she said "no no no, that's for dip powder, not design". I was so confused since that was the bundle of colors they handed to me. I picked another color and showed her a picture of a design I previously had, but instead of blue I chose a purple. I'm not sure why this was confusing to her, but I told her I know in the picture it's blue, and I want the same design, but I want this color instead and showed her the purple... My nails are uneven in every way possible. She didn't file them so that they're smooth, the top of the nail isn't even and some parts are flat and others are raised. I really didn't feel like micromanaging and accepted the fact it was just going to be a bad manicure and had made up my mind after my nails were soaking for 30 minutes and hadn't gotten a massage that I wasn't coming back, so I didn't really care. I really wanted to have this be my new place uptown, but I can't go somewhere that's going to be so hit or miss. At least if it's a consistent 3 stars every time, I know what to expect. read more

I just want to say. I'm very satisfied with the dip extension manicure I got here. In full transparency I went and the first round was rough. I paid and left but I was so upset with my full set that I called immediately after and expressed my frustration. They were apologetic and scheduled for me to come back and get them fixed. I made an appointment for a SNS powder manicure through Yelp for Saturday at 2. It was super easy to make and appointment. They responded back right away and were able to take me at my desired time. When I got to the salon, I liked that it was a nice size and they had lots of nail technicians working. Most walkins didn't have to wait which is a plus. It is well decorated and the stations are clean. The person who did my manicure was great! I had on powder so I had to get it removed. It took a little longer cause my previous color was really on there, but the actual SNS manicure didn't take too long. I was probably there about an hour. When I came in I could tell there was a clear delineation between some of the spa chairs that the pedicures were taking place in. They placed me in the pedicure section that had non-working pedicure chairs and was non-sanitized. The person who is doing my toes keeps asking me questions every 5 minutes that I have already answered to her at the beginning of the service. I said I wanted a gel pedicure with SNS manicure. She tried to argue with me that because my nails were short that I need to get gel instead of SNS which I have never heard of all the 10 years that I've been getting SNS. I ask for a list of pedicure options since she was just putting my feet in water and that's it. Edit. I was religiously supporting this business and felt great about the service and late hours. This was until each time the service was worse and it turned into nothing but a factory. I referred sooo many people to this nail shop. Its now super crowded and popular. My last visit was such a disaster, it was so unbearable, I stood up in the middle of the awful manicure after being treated so bad and walked out. Reasons: 1-Instead of telling me there was a wait, she let the acetone sit on my nails for an hour!!! I didn't realize it until the time ran out on my parking. 2- My nails were soft and extremely sensitive after that, but she used the file for acrylics and filed so hard my nail bed was burning and red. She tried to convince me she was filing softly when using the coarse file. 3-She was asking if I wanted another powder gel for money not acknowledging the pain my nails were in and weakened state! I had to cut them all down and start over. No polish until the nail bed heals. 4-She jumped up and down back and forth handling money and customers which is unhygienic. If you want a great powder gel with no regard for the condition of your nails go for it. But later, you will pay the price. The best spot for SNS Powder manicures! And such nice ladies. Rachel was so kind and a perfectionist. She did a meticulous job on my Powder mani - and at 8:00 pm! I've had SNS done in California and New York and Rachel is amongst the most experienced. She made my nails perfectly smooth and with such a pretty shape. the first few times i came the service was great and the manicures were fine for the affordable price, but last time there was an older man doing my manipedi and he totally butchered my nails. he had great, attentive service and was a wonderful conversationalist in chinese, but totally abused my nails with multiple drills while removing gel to the point of bruising. the polish application after was uneven and lumpy. my nails were bleeding during the manicure due to the rough treatment and he wiped it harshly with acetone thinking it was polish. it's been two months and i'm still trying to heal my nails. i don't like to speak ill of service workers especially immigrants because i know how tough it is and how hard they work, and it's taken me months to write this because i don't want to be judgmental, but they have truly damaged my nails for months and i don't know when they will recover. please be careful coming here, and say something if you feel uncomfortable even if you don't want to contradict your manicurist. i respect the employees for working hard, but please please please do not let untrained people work on nails. this was really heartbreaking and i can't believe i paid for a professional manipedi as a treat for myself and ended up with completely ruined hands. my nails remain thin, weak, and brutalized with visible gouges and deformities even two months later. read more

I really regret coming here instead of my usual place. I thought I'd try somewhere new for a special occasion and saw that Modern Spa had really great reviews. But man this once again shows how I shouldn't rely 100% on Yelp reviews. Once I arrived, I was told to just sit at the entrance and wait for the next person available. I sat there waiting for 15 min even though I had an appointment. This isn't even the complaint. When the lady started cutting my cuticles, she had cut me in multiple nails and I started seeing blood. I am still bleeding (7 days after I got my nails done). Didn't say a word until I was looking at it. When I started showing I was pissed only then did she apologize. Their nail polish is also very old. Idk what kind of gel polish they use but mine changed colors the next day! I got a bright pink color but it ended up changing to my skin tone color. I booked a full acrylic set on the phone and after they had already started doing my nails and took out the dip powder I mentioned that I asked for an acrylic set on the phone and they told me they don't do acrylics. I said that is ok but was annoyed that they didn't tell me that on the phone. I showed the picture of the art that I wanted when I walked in and asked if they could do it and they said yes. After sitting in the chair for over an hour for the dip process, the nails weren't looking how I was hoping. They agreed to do gel on top of the dip because I didn't like the look of the see-through pink tinted nail. At this point I was just hoping to get my money's worth ($110+tip) and leave with a set that looked good. When she started doing the blue lines, I let her know it didn't have to mimic the inspo pic exactly, but the style (hoping that she could work on making the lines clean rather than copying the art exactly) The pic I showed was similar to one I saw in an earlier Yelp review so I had faith. After asking for retouching where the polish lines didn't match up (leaving the color of the nail coming through) I basically gave up. I honestly think the nail technician did her best so I don't fault her for that, but I just wish I was either advised against what I asked for or told that they might not be able to match the picture. I'm leaving two stars because I've been here a few times now and my previous experiences were better. I came in for a UV Gel refill and the woman started drilling off my previous set. As she's doing so, one nail lifts completely and she tells me I'll need to get an entirely new set. I asked her how much more time and money that would be. I agree to the cost and she continues taking off the old set. After speaking to who I assume was the owner, she tells me that she will no longer need to do a new set and can just fix the one broken nail and continue with the rest as is. She once more tells me the cost and it was a bit more than I originally wanted to pay but I agreed. At some point, she starts talking to the nail tech next to her (not in English so I'm not sure what was being said) and then tells me that she actually does have to give me an entirely new set and that it'll cost even more. At this point, the back and forth has gone on too many times and the price keeps being increased on me, which was extremely frustrating. I told her that I just want to get the nails taken off and get a regular gel manicure. The owner comes back over because I'm sure she can tell I'm frustrated and double-checks that I don't want extensions. I tell her that I don't have the time (it's already been 30 minutes since my appointment was supposed to start) and she tells me that it'll only take 45 minutes. I know there is no way I can get an entirely new set with a design in 45 minutes so I say no thanks and tell her that I'm not looking to spend that much money anyway. The nail tech continues with my regular gel manicure and when it comes time to put the nail polish she brings over two colors that are completely different from the color I selected. I asked her what happened to the red I had picked out and she says that they no longer have it and offers me the two options (neither of which is red) instead. I've been going here for gel dip manicures for the past few months. My first experience was amazing so I came back a second time. The second time my manicure didn't last as long as the previous had and chipped after less than two weeks, which shouldn't really happen with dip. When I went yesterday, the technician who worked with me seemed to be racing through, used techniques that I'd never seen before, was kind of aggressive with my nails to the point that the manicure hurt at times (i.e. when she was using the drill, trimming my cuticles). It then hurt to wash my hands following the manicure because my nail beds were so tender. There was zero attention to detail. Usually they ask if the nail length/shape is okay, but she didn't, and when I asked her to trim them a bit shorter, she cut one hand shorter than the other and didn't shape them well. Now all of my nails are different lengths and shapes. On top of that, there were small hairs or something in the dip so I have little fibers stuck on my nails. Ugh I really wanted to give this salon 5 stars but I simply can't. I found this place on Yelp pre COVID and because of the great reviews I always wanted to try it out. So before I visited I messaged the manager on Yelp with what I was looking to get and the photo of it. They informed me that the design wouldn't be an issue so I booked an appointment. However, once I got there the nail technician told me that they couldn't to my design because they didn't have the glitter needed for it. Seeing that I traveled all the way for Jersey here I was pretty disappointed but we came up with an alternative that I was pleased with. Everyone at the salon was friendly and my nail technician did an amazing job on my nails and I left happy. They also have affordable prices which are amazing especially for the upper west side of Manhattan. But, fast forward three days later one nail has chipped and the other have broken off which both are covered with uv gel and gel polish and to say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. I really wanted to find a great place with good prices that I can continue to come to even from Jersey but unfortunately this isn't it for me. With all that said I might give them another try in the future but you should definitely try it out for yourself and maybe you'll have a different experience. read more

I came here after making a reservation. When I arrived, they couldn't find my reservation, but they had space so in I went. I brought my own colors because I'm picking and the tech was great about using them. She wasn't great about listening to what I wanted and I ended up with a nail shape I was not happy with. She also was aggressive in getting me to do things and go places with her. There was no consistency with each foot in regard to massages or care. There are dividers and spaces that are COVID compliant. Will I come back? Ehh, probably not. Or if I do, I would request someone else. I have been going to Modern Spa on and off for the six years I have lived in Manhattan. They are definitely on the top of my list for consistently excellent nail services in New York City. All pedicures are performed in spa chairs and they have a large selection of regular nail polish colors and gel polish colors. I usually add on an additional foot/leg and/or neck/shoulder massage because self-care! They are very sanitary and their establishment is very clean, bright and welcoming. I've gone to this salon a few times because of reasonable pricing however each time they make you sit and wait until you speak up, even with an appointment and they never have the appropriate staffing. Today, they started my soak off and left me sitting for 35/40 minutes with nail polish remover on my fingers. My hands and nails started to burn and I kept asking if someone was coming to help. The lady gave me attitude and told me my nails needed to be soaking for that long which is CRAZY!! She was fighting me telling me that I was wrong even tho my fingers and nails felt like they were going to fall off. I left the salon without a manicure and my fingers are still burning! I have been going to modern spa for about two years. I usually go during off-peak hours, and I have always had a fantastic set done every time. This time I got some nail art done for the first time there, and was so impressed with how meticulous my technician was. She made sure to get the design exactly perfect! These tips are always perfectly shaped, and very thin. The ladies are so lovely, they always remember who I am. There's also a dude that walks around giving free three minute massages! Definitely recommend going during off-peak hours. I have had times when I went between 6-9 pm on weekdays or weekends and they tell you they have time to fit you in but you still sit and wait quite a while. So make a reservation! read more

I don't write reviews on places unless I've had a very good or a very bad experience. Unfortunately this review is the latter. Several times I had to ask for the nail tech to square up the corners of my nails. One of the times she told me "round is better because it won't break"...I've been getting acrylics for over 10 years- if I ask for square nails, I know what I'm asking for. Also she buffed the top of the nails with a regular file (never had someone do that- they typically use a buffer, which she did after she buffed the tops with a file) it was very coarse and it got caught on my skin several times. To top it off at the end there were bubbles of paint on a few of the nails and when I pointed one out to her, she asked "do you want me to take it off?"... I'm paying $80 and you're going to leave my nails like that? The nails are uneven and chunky. All this two days before Christmas. Super disappointed and not satisfied. I've never seen a more rushed job, a pedicure and a manicure done within 40 minutes, suspicious. My manicure looks like a child did it. The nail polish I brought myself is one I've used many times as I do my own nails for this same reason. It is not opaque at all, she did not push my cuticles back well nor did she cut my cuticles well. The pedicure was so fast, I still have my calluses that I came in with. Im extremely disappointed and wish I would've just done them myself at home instead of wasting 50$ for something im not happy with. Will never be coming back here again.
