First of all, spacious inside with a lot of seats. We came on a weekend night, 30min before closing! Not much of service, but not complaining bc we don't have to tip and we were too hungry too! We couldn't get many of the stuff on the menu, bc they were out of it. Understandable since we came late. Three stars , really bc it's just very average. The Mac and cheese was just average. Wings were good but I expected better when this place is rated highly. They were probably the second best I ever had with the best BBQ beans being from Bozo's BBQ in Mason, TN. This place "was" absolutely the best! This is why I was shocked and greatly saddened to learn that they have permanently closed. Don't know why. It certainly wasn't the quality of taste of their food since everything was simply amazing! Maybe it was the poor business climate of the city or the high biz taxes, or maybe the greedy landlords charging too much for lease so that they can afford their 4th vacation home in Guatemala. In any event, Moe's BBQ will be greatly missed. I liked this place a lot. You walk in and are greeted kindly. The door handle is a cleaver and the rest of the restaurant is mostly decorated like a normal BBQ place but has some undersea elements which I thought was cool. You order at the counter and after just a few minutes, they slide out your food on a tray and you take it to your table of choice. They have a whole roll of paper towels on each table and extra BBQ sauce that you can take with you to your table. All the side that I tried (mac&cheese, beans, cornbread, banana pudding) were all really good! The beans tasted a bit sweet. The cornbread was a bit dry and didn't have the best flavor which was disappointing. The meat was cooked really well and the BBQ sauce was a bit sweet and complimented the meat well. Visiting the South, of course I want BBQ! The cashier was really helpful in answering my questions about the food and even giving me some samples to taste before I ordered. I got the ribs for 2 which come with two sides, got the Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. My partner got the wings as an add on. No judgement here, just full bellies. I felt like a little kid eating those wings lol. Onto the star of the show: ribs. They were cooked to perfection, really tender and flavorful. I had to put on my own BBQ sauce which I usually prefer to have on the ribs when I'm served them. The sauce leaned more tangy and not that classic sweet and smoky. I suppose that might be a regional difference but still, I felt a bit cheated. Nonetheless we ate those ribs to the bone lol. The sides were pretty tasty but at this point I was struggling to eat, my partner easily kept going. The Mac and cheese needed pepper in my opinion, it was good but not great like the Deep South. Sweet potatoes did their thing but no marshmallows (?!?), so strange and sad. It's the little things that really make a meal. My partner got the Reese pie which is chocolate pudding and Reese peanut butter on top with whipped cream. He said it was pretty decent, not mind blowing but satisfied the sweet tooth. We got the (I can't remember what it was called) 1.5# of pulled pork that came with 3 sides (we got baked beans, coleslaw and banana pudding) and we chose the cornbread. It was enough to feed the 4 of us. The order was ready pretty quickly. Pork was OK. They only have one type of sauce. Basic sauce, no spice. Bake beans were very yummy. When I approached the counter to order, I asked the employee what they recommend, he said definitely the brisket. So I ordered the brisket platter (comes with 2 sides and a drink for $18)- honestly a good deal for the amount of food you get. Unfortunately, the brisket was extremely dry, had literally no juiciness that you expect when biting into brisket- which also made it not tender. He chose the hash brown casserole and the jambalaya. Bother were great! Maybe it's because I prefer my beef rare but the brisket was a bit overcooked for my liking and that's the only reason I can't give this place 5 stars. I've been waiting to eat here and finally made the time to. I was really expecting something different and special but -- it was just another BBQ joint. The line to order was located in an awkward place, I could only imagine how confusing it may be on a busy day. I arrived around 7:00 p.m. on a Friday night. There were people dining in but the seats weren't filled. There were about 2 orders ahead of me. I was surprised how long it took for me to get my food -- 15 minutes? It was to the point where I was tempted to go check. I ordered the small order of 4 pork ribs, 2 sides, a drink. It came out to be $15! Ok...for that price point; it better be some good ribs. Ribs: Ahh...nice smoke ring but mediocre in my opinion. It was a bit on the dry side. I was given 1.5 bone and 2 slabs of meat. If you don't believe me, look at my photos. I swear, I did not eat the bones. I thought I ordered 4 bones? (LOL). Did I just pay $15 to eat imaginary ribs? Common! Potato salad: OK...nothing else to say. Coleslaw: Almost OK...I didn't finish it. Corn Bread: The real MVP. This was by far the best cornbread I've eaten and I'm not a cornbread fan. It was quite delicious! I would order this. Sweet Tea: It was delicious. Overall, great customer service. A worker was kind enough to come by and wipe my table. That was a kind gesture. I really like this Alabama-style BBQ joint! I tried Moe's out for the first time last year, and I wish I had taken a chance on them sooner. There is no shortage of amazing barbecue places in the Triangle, but Moe's offers a little something different with their Alabama white bbq sauce, tangy slaw, and sandwiches like the fried shrimp moe boy. Their pulled pork is tender and flavorful. I love that they rotate sides and specials often, so each time I visit I have a chance to try something different. If you're not in the mood for bbq when you visit, I highly recommend their fried shrimp sandwich. It's delicious! They also offer fried catfish, smoked chicken, turkey, and ribs. Their sides are comforting and remind me of home, in the best way. I especially like the creamy hashbrown casserole and their sweet potato casserole with cinnamon corn flake topping. I'm not a huge fan of the dessert options, but I think it's cool that you can get one as a side item. I am often stuffed by the time I am through with my main entree and side. The restaurant is just off of Ninth Street, making it an easy stop if you're on Duke's campus or visiting Downtown Durham. The indoor space is large and the tables are nicely spread out, which has made it feel like a safe indoor dining option during the pandemic. There are a few outdoor tables as well. They have a private parking lot, and although it's small, we've never had trouble finding a spot. okay foodie peeps... as we have all experienced and noticed many places have struggled with staffing and supplies during the pandemic. But going to Moe's this last week I was pleasantly surprised to find an upbeat staff that seemed to be adapting to pandemic life positively. Everyone was wearing their masks (properly) and very friendly and helpful. The place was clean and the food was fresh and tasty! We had ribs, pork and chicken wings. The meat was flavorful without being too greasy~ And I swear the ribs and pulled pork were cooked for days! Tender, Juicy, and nummy! We also had their corn, hashbrowns, collard greens, and slaw: all of which were good, and offered that "family recipe" uniqueness. They have a pulled pork sandwich with slaw and both, white and red BB-Q sauce- don't pass that up. And last but definitely not least, we finished the meal with some banana pudding. You do not want to pass this up either -- their banana pudding tastes like it has a little cinnamon and the love of 1000 angels in it... In summary, I can't wait to go back. They have Nachos on Mondays that look pretty good and I am dying to sink my teeth into the ribs again. Spending the weekend in Durham, MD. Stopped at Moe's for dinner and oddly enough, I loved she aides more than the BBQ. The ribs were ok, and the chicken wing are pretty good with the white sauce, but the brisket was way too dry and peppery. I couldn't even eat it. Now on to the sides, the true stars of the show. The cornbread is sweet and crispy, collards have the perfect texture, potato salad is classic, baked beans are incredibly tasty, Cole sale is tangy and sweet, and the Mac and cheese has a great flavor even though it could use a tad more cheese.
